Excellent ‘Sourdough for starters’ course - very hands on & informative, and a delicious lunch - left with armfuls of bread and other goodies. Sourdough pittas and bagels are a revelation!

I fancied tying something new, so along with a friend booked a bread making course with Hobbs House Bakery in Chipping Sodbury. I didn’t really know what to expect, but went with an open mind and an expectation to make some bread. What a fantastic day. We were greeted with freshly made, warm pasties and following introductions and some educational facts on flour, it turns out there is a bit more to it than plain and self-raising - who knew!?! we got stuck into mixing flour with water and other ingredients (don’t want to spoil it for you) and had a thoroughly informative, educational, fun day. Interspersed between the classroom/kitchen were fantastic meals, where we actually made the pittas and pizzas (yep, we made our lunch) and this was washed down with fine wines and a plethora of other beverages to suit everyone’s tastes. When they realised it was my friend’s birthday, they went the extra distance and provided a cake and candle, which was a lovely gesture. Amazing day. Thank you Jon

I visited Hobbs house bakery, this morning and bought some bacon sandwiches. The order was wrong and so I went back in, to rectify the order. I was served by an older woman, with glasses and a hollister T-shirt on, who could not even make eye contact with me. She did not apologise at all, did not allow me to wait there and then, while she changed the order, but sent me back outside to queue up again. The bakery products are really good there, but the bacon is lacking, see picture below. The other staff there, were very friendly and nice, but this older woman needs to learn about customer services.

Birthday party cake, pre ordered. Was collecting by a friend and I am relieved I looked at it before. We had just enough time to make our own. Chocolate raspberry brownie cheesecake! Unapologetically the ugliest cake I have ever had. What we ordered, what we got (never got better what way up) what we did with it (bin it) my 14 yr old made her own cake. Staff were not friendly when ask why it was so bad… So there you have it!

Hi There I'm new to Hobbs and I happened to be craving a pasty on this rainy day to warm my soul and through the corner of my eye I spotted your bakery. I had to investigate as my belly commanded. And oh my the taste combined with the presentation of said pasty left me feeling humbled and emotional but in the best way. I thought In my 38 years of pasty eating I had seen and consumed the best. I now realise this was not the case. I never thought a pasty could impress me enough to send an email of thanks but my taste buds drove me to do so. The lady that served me was lovely and I aim to purchase many more pastys from her and a new wardrobe as I grow :) thank u very much x Chipping sodbury bakery today :) Big Carl x

I attended this day course last Saturday and thoroughly enjoyed it. The instruction was good, the welcome pastries and coffee and the lunch were delicious, and the bread we made and took home was really good. The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is that the pack given out at the end only contained the recipes and it would have been so much more useful to have a reminder of the methods and tips.

Having used different bakeries before I wanted to try these guys given their stories on their “marketing&publicity” materials (incl. their own bread bags) ; Bought a sourdough spelt bread - BIGGEST MISTAKE! Tasteless (like bread soaked in the water) and very soggy and sticky ... as for sourdough? Maybe they took a picture of the sourdough and attached to the oven while cooking. NOTHING like the real thing!! Whoever likes PROPER ARTISANAL BREAD, TRY The Assembly Bakery! PROPER STUFF and always the best you can get. I will cheerfully and happily travel the extra mile and get proper bread than “artisanal LOOKING” one tat tastes like rancid.... sorry guys but I’m being honest!

A lovely place and beautiful setting for a bakery course for children. A little strict with the teaching which took some of the fun out of it.

I had a lovely Birthday present of a sourdough baking course which I attended yesterday at their baking school. Although I have been baking with sourdough for 6 months, I found the course really helpful.. there were quite a few beginners too who all went home well fed and happy to start their sourdough journey. We all made lots of things on this course, from pitta bread to bagels to pizza and of course bread and it was fun, informative and felt a very personal experience as Tom Herbert talked about his journey as a 5th generation baker. I thoroughly enjoyed it and might well be back for one of their other courses (pie making, yeasted bread making etc). The school is run from the lovely old building above the shop on the high street and Tom made time to answer our many questions ensuring we all get something out of the course. We came home with a mini loaf to bake, a 64 year old sourdough starter and lots of recipes. Make sure you book ahead as the courses get filled up easily but it was one of the best presents I’ve ever had! Super well done!

No cafe on the premises anymore Good range of loaves from basic white to sourdough with all the trimmings. The bread will look expensive compared to the average supermarket sliced white, but its like comparing apples and pears. The staff are friendly, it can get busy and crowded at times, they now take card payments which speeds things up - but go early if you want a particular loaf as they sell out, especially at weekends. The bread is widely used by event and commercial sandwich makers so don't be surprised if your chosen loaf has been bought up in a batch of 10. All the cakes and sweet stuff is lovely and priced just high enough to make it a treat rather than a regular gut expanding purchase. Shares a doorway with a nice butcher - so you can get you bacon for a sarnie there too, which is a bonus!

We had made a special journey en route from Cardiff to visit the café which has now closed so we had to make do with a loaf each to take away and some sweet treats. I had the lardy cake which was immense and my friend had the Viennese whirl which she equally raved about. The prices are at a premium as I guess extra has been added due to who owns the bakery and the success of their tv show and book, however for an occasional treat it was really lovely and I recommend a visit if you are nearby.

Thinking about ordering online from Hobbs House Bakery to have bread delivered to your door?Think again. We've experienced this bakery's home delivery service deteriorate dramatically over the past 2 years. All told, before the home delivery service plummeted in quality, we had ordered about 100 loaves in different home deliveries. For the first year, the deliveries were fine. Then, as problems developed with errors and mistakes in their bread deliveries, we were made to feel that we were 'bothering' them when we phoned to ask them to make things right... such as accidentally failing to deliver all of the bread on the same day and slicing loaves which we did not want sliced, for example.Eventually, in the past two home delivery orders, we were sent loaves of their rye bread which had large cracks running through them which made it impossible to slice them without the bread falling apart into unusable pieces. There were so many loaves cracked in pieces like this that we now suspect that Hobbs were simply salvaging their cracked, defective loaves by selling them to us at full price because presumably no walk-in customer at their bakery would pay money to buy a loaf of bread like these off the shelf and what better way to get rid of defective loaves than to ship them out of town to trusting customers who weren't expecting anything like that. Selling cracked loaves to us at full price beats having to throw these defective loaves out or having to donate them to charity, at least from Hobbs perspective, we imagine. In any event, with so much outstanding competition throughout England from amazing bakeries who actually care about their customers and who care about repeat business and making customers happy, if you want to order delicious bread to be delivered to your home, go online and check out the numerous wonderful choices you have to choose from out there. On a positive note, the reason why we gave Hobbs two stars and not one star is because when you warm up the broken pieces after slicing their defective broken loaves, the bread pieces really are delicious!

Love home made bread , was expecting the loaf I bought at a whopping £2 for a small loaf to be like home made and it wasn't , only one up from commercially made bread , would have liked to try scones but they didn't look as if they had risen at all . went there because we were on holiday and had run out of our home made . money for old rope .

Just needed a loaf to top up the cupboard. Spotted the attraction frontage and popped in instead of calling at the supermarket. GREAT MOVE! Good selection of lovely fresh baked goods on offer. Came out with an armful! Cold fresh healthy snacks and drinks also available. Hunks of fresh bread and butter with a coffee was all that was needed for tea!

Just had a family lunch of 11 of us. The service was impeccable, the variety of food on offer was sufficient and different from usual pub fayre with very tasty curries. Biryani was full of flavour, with good vegetarian and children's options. Trad Sunday lunch excellent with fresh veg. The staff were so friendly and attentive on what was a very busy day. Decor and cleanliness tip top. A real pleasure, we were looked after very well from start to finish. Prices reasonable too, although the desserts may need to be rebalanced between cost and quantity. A lovely lunch for all. Thank you. Steve + 10

Take a punt on the Grumpy Griffin. It might be your lucky day but then again you might regret it. A mixed set of results from customers. Mine was negative. No real ale. Only a few peeps on Sunday mid-afternoon and one was drunk as a Lord and seemingly spoiling for trouble. Background music was fine. Quality tv showing a premiership game. Just cider, lager and Guinness on tap. Feels like a local pub where others are not made welcome.
