Hinds Head in West Berkshire

Six of us visited today and as always the food and service was impeccable. Already booked to come back again. Always very welcoming and helpful.

Absolutely amazing meal today (roast beef ) and staff fabulous. Couldn’t do enough for you. Visited with my elderly parents, and the staff were great with them especially as my Dad has a really bad speech impediment.

Excellent service from start to finish. Food was excellent. Staff were very attentive and welcoming. Communication was equally as good.

The food was delicious and well presented, the staff were welcoming and the atmosphere pleasant. The only downside was the chef put a non gluten free wafer on a gluten free pudding and it was by chance that we found out. He was most apologetic and offered to replace the dish, but such things really shouldn’t happen.

The Hinds Head is very picturesque with most obliging staff who dealt admirably with my two requests to rearrange the time of our table. However, when we arrived at 1.00 on a Friday, there were rather too many choices unavailable. Whilst what we had was beautifully presented and enjoyable, it wasn't our preference.

Stayed at the Hinds Head for a night, dinner was excellent, the people serving were very attentive and the food was really nice, however.... During the night we were awoken on three separate times by other guest banging doors and shouting in the hall way, before 6am it started again, our sleep in was ruined by the noise in the hall way. On going for breakfast I advised the "manager" that I was not happy as we were unable to get a decent rest with all the noise, there was an apology and the excuse was there was a wedding party in, this is no excuse at all. Breakfast was a disaster, the person who took our breakfast order did not write anything down, due to this we were presented twice with totally the wrong breakfasts. We were also told to get our own coffee and toast, unfortunately the buffet had been left bare, hardly anything left. Not happy with our stay, we know the other guests were the issue all I expected was some kind of acknowledgement of the issues but all I got was a blank stare, I shall be writing to Fullers in detail of this episode.

We are new to the neighbourhood and the spot ticks all the boxes for us, yummy tasty homey meals. Our new favourite restaurant for sure!

An excellent Sunday lunch in a bright and lovely restaurant. Both food and service was first class. All areas were spotless and the place has character.

We held our wedding at the Hinds Head. A small family do for 30 people. Simple with out the massive expense of some modern weddings. We had an amazing afternoon /evening helped by the excellent food & service we received. From the initial booking of the venue some 10 months earlier the management were fabulous. They were accomadating and helped with suggestions as to how as a pub/hotel they could lay out & set up for us. On the day when our guests arrived the drinks were ready & chilled to welcome them. The food when we sat down was superb 3 courses for 30 people came out efficiently and hot (where applicable) the bar service was speedy & though the main bar was open to the public there was never queuing time as there were plenty of staff. A lovely stay that was unfortunately spoilt by a very disappointing experience at breakfast. After placing our order, it was close to an hour later when we gave up waiting. I politely advised the waiting staff to cancel our breakfast and suggested they might want to consider a token of compensation for the extremely disappointing service. I was told that the reason for the exceptional delay was the chef on duty was struggling and the head chef was en route to support the kitchen. That really should have been the end of the story. However, upon returning to the hotel reception, the head chef approached me waving a printed order ticket and rather forcefully tried to insist I was wrong over the duration of our wait and he would not be entertaining any sort of refund. I could not believe this response and the poor customer service. Clearly I had no control over how long the kitchen took to process our order and from the staff comment earlier, things were likely a little disorganised. An unacceptable situation and one that completely ruined our stay.

My partner and I went there for Valentines dinner and stayed for the night. All the dishes we chose were excellent and in particular the Beef Wellington was amazing. Food,presentation,service,atmosphere and our room well exceeded our expectations.

We had a family Christmas meal. The pub feels very calm and relaxing on arrival and our table was decorated tastefully with Christmas decorations and crackers, a lovely touch. Service was very good and drinks were offered promptly after sitting at the table. The food was simply delicious and piping hot on arrival. We had the Christmas menu which was preordered. I had the beef and it had amazing flavour and just melted in your mouth, I would definitely recommend this and the red cabbage was lovely along with everything else. The whole experience was excellent from start to finish and compliments to the chef Luke for amazing food and attentive staff. I would definitely recommend going here to experience the food.

4 of us had a delicious Christmas meal and stayed overnight. The rooms and food were excellent. The breakfast was just as delicious with all locall y sourced produce. All the staff are so lovely and very attentive. We couldn't fault the entire experience and cannot wait to go back. Well done!

Great Sunday lunch, one of the best I’ve tasted. The whole meal was lovely, great veg, great roast potato’s and loads of it. Had to grab the staff a couple of times but they were young girls but did a good job even when it got busy. We would recommend but would quite like to keep it to ourselves so we can always get a table

We came to the Tapas night. Oh my god, the food was outstanding. The flavours were spot on. The service was fab, staff were helpful and welcoming. Prices were very reasonable. I was pleased to eat well in our local pub. Will be back. Thank you

Last minute Birthday Lunch, and first visit to The Hinds Head, which I must say was a great success. The first thing that impressed us was the décor and surroundings. Different rooms, small and large for all occasions, and a really comfortable atmosphere. Good selection for a lunch menu and the food was served with no long wait, and very tasty. The staff were very attentive and very friendly , and being a busy lunch time, they were more than happy to bring our Birthday cake to the table, and sing, which was lovely. Our waitress Aimee was a delight. Will definitely be going back.

Fabulous chef accommodated dietary restrictions and treated us beautifully. The food was great, the atmosphere was great, and all the staff are friendly and helpful.

The only reason we chose this hotel was because it was convenient for our wedding at The Old Mill, which is a fantastic venue. However, please steer well clear of this hotel/pub. The staff were so unhelpful, rude and blamed everything on a recent change of ownership. The service was diabolical they did everything they could not to help. They agreed to check in luggage and have keys 11am, no keys were ready. The bags where supposed to be sent to the rooms, but they were left out until midnight when we returned on the main stair case. We booked the hotel over a year ago and a guaranteed rate for all rooms was agreed at £135. Unfortunately, they said they couldn't no longer offer the rate. So my poor guests had to pay more on check out. Please save yourself the hassle and DO NOT use this venue.

Stayed for one night before a wedding the next day. Our room was very comfortable and looked just like the photos on the website, which isn’t always the case. We had a delicious evening meal and the cooked breakfast was very good. Another plus was the staff, who were all very friendly and helpful.

New chef - So decided to test out the desert menu with my street dwelling side-kick and our tribe of children. Had tea and lemon mini-tart, which was a real treat. So nice, wish they'd offer a 'double your slice for a £1 deal, as I would have done! Alongside this, ordered the cheese board. Now, as an esteemed and well known cheese board devotee, I set my game high. Selection of three neat chunks of cheese, two sides of relish and a good handful of the fabulous triple cooked fries with two crackers. My only complaints being the lack of crackers - two felt a little measly., and a lack of butter - I'm sure she would have been provided if asked, but I was over the coffee and on to the Prosecco... so forgot. Cheese range was good with standard cheddar black bomber and brie. Followed that down nicely with one of Jakes special passion fruit foamy topped cocktails. The kids had a lemonade. All in all a good afternoon was had by all.

A busy hotel and restaurant, service was acceptable if not a little slow so its not fast food. As a hotel the carpark was a real challenge so give yourself plenty of time to find a space. Cigarette smoke was very obvious in the restaraunt which tainted the food - I should have said something but thought it was just me. The food was of good quality although the menu was limted in breath and not all items were priced.

Very slow service. Very limited menu. Liver and bacon option had only tiny slivers of bacon pieces with very tough liver. When I say tough it was hard to saw through with a sharp knife. Not surprised the place was nearly empty. Another place that thinks it can get away with very high prices for an ok sounding menu but then turns out really substandard reheated brewery supplied ready meals. Avoid.

We arrived half an hour before our booking time, but we were seated and self promptly by the friendly lady who was on duty. There only appeared to be 2 front of house staff on duty, but they were efficient and worked well together. We had black garlic & celeriac soup for starters, which was delicious. This was followed by calves liver (which just melted in my mouth) & mash for me and an enormous portion of fish & chips for my friend. All dishes were cooked well and were lovely. Unfortunately we were too full to sample dessert.

We waited nearly 30 mins for our drinks, then an hour for the food. Well they call it food! I wanted a burger and chips and there was a mixture of other orders. Well I'm not kidding when I say, this was the worst burger I have ever been presented with. Including the burnt bun, it was about 1" high and very burnt. The others in the party had similar experiences with their food apart from two people that had the fish and chips, so they called the duty manager. after some haggling we eventually sent the food back and received refund of such for the food. I did feel this situation was not handled very at all by the manager. The disappointing thing thing for us was, there was nowhere else to go and eat as we had been waiting so long!! Very very unhappy with this experience.

We stayed here for one night in August for a friend's wedding and it was great. Given the pub was over-run with the wedding party with a few kids the staff were efficient and friendly.

Met family for breakfast on a Saturday. Full English had greasy mushrooms and black pudding too hard.Also some had poached eggs on muffins and the eggs were not cooked through. Changed the order to smoked salmon which was revolting and thick and the scrambled egg was not light and fluffy was stodgy and heavy going made with cream apparently. No taste at all.We will not be going again and after complaining the bill was not adjusted!!

Can’t recommend this highly enough. Possibly one of the best places I have ever stayed. The room was faultless: big enough, comfy bed, good temperature, immaculate, quiet, well kitted out, everything worked, great shower etc. Staff were really friendly and helpful. Breakfast was also incredible. A very solid 5 stars from me.

We tried 3 local pubs to book a Sunday family lunch but all were fully booked. The Hinds Head had plenty of vacancies, this should have been a warning. The Staff were great, friendly and helpful, the decor a bit scuffed in parts but the food, a “Sunday Roast” was awful, largely pre-prepared I suspect, particularly the roast potatoes and beef. A great shame.

What can I say, a ready meal from Iceland would have been better. Every course was straight from the freezer, I dont think the Turkey ever saw life, it was that horrible plastic like roll. The roast potatoes straight from the freezer, sadly not even defrosted. We had to ask for more of everything two bullets aka brussel sprouts, one limp and I mean limp carrot. As for the pudding, it was cold and still had some wrapper on it.All this for £31 per person.It was the very worst food I have ever eaten and now very sick, although I can't believe bugs even stayed in the food.

Service was slow. I had the fish cakes. There was quite a nasty after taste. My suspicion was that the oil was old because we had the chips later and the after taste was still prevalent. Apart from that it would have been great!

Booked for an early lunch and had a table for two choosing a starter an roast beef Sunday Roast meal. The starters were both very good and served quickly. The roast sirloin of beef meal were ok but not up to the price charged. Cold plates meant the meals got cold quickly and the Yorkshire puds were rock hard. All edible but only just due to the temperature. Not sure I would venture there soon.

We dined early Saturday evening, 4 adults, a toddler and a baby. The staff were great all the way through, and the food was really nice, starters and main. Pies and fishcakes recommended. The ales are well kept.

I was one of a large group who took up the whole of 'The Officers' Mess' dining room, and our pre-ordered meals started to be brought out even a little before the 13.00 time requested. My Club Sandwich, with GOOD chips, was excellent, and I heard no complaints around the tables where a variety of meals were being eaten. The Fullers (& Gales) beers are well kept, and the staff friendly and helpful. Recommended.

Three of us booked for dinner in order to celebrate a birthday of one of us with a good meal.

We decided to book a 1 night stay as we was attending our friends wedding down the road at Wasing Park. On arrival the staff were very helpful and ever so friendly especially the young lady Anna, who was ever so accommodating with our request for an early check in due to us needing to get ready for the wedding.

I hadn't been to the Hinds Head before but found ourselves there on a hot summer's evening. The building is nice and the layout is quirky in a good way, staff were pleasant and helpful. We sat in the Beer Garden which was very nice and with a bit more effort could be superb.

The setting and decor of this place is fabulous, especially in the sunshine and i love the quirkiness of the restaurant and bar decor.

Sorry Tripadvisor, but I went ahead and booked (at late notice) a sunday lunch for my my family without checking out the reviews first.

I have been here on a few occasions and every time I think I’ll give it one more try as the venue and hotel rooms are actually nice. But the staff are rude and blunt, the food service is slow and when food arrives is average and to top it off they overcharged a few members of our party when we paid separately , it may have been by only a small amount but was very sneakily done.

Had lunch yesterday and what a disappointment. Have passed by the Hinds Head regularly for over 30 years and finally called in.

We came here as we had great meals in the past but oh my goodness. What a disappointment this time.

To be honest I wasn’t sure about this restaurant after reading the other negatives reviews but we thought let’s go and see. We were pleasantly surprised, the place is lovely and the food was excellent, well presented, hot and very tasty. Yes, maybe it took a little while to arrive but it was worth the wait, if you want good food you have to wait for it to be cooked. The service was flawless, all the staff were lovely. My advice is don’t read the negative comments, different people have different expectations and let’s face it, most of us are incredibly hard to please these days.

Our first stay at the Hinds Head was nothing short of perfect. The staff were so friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. Our room was spacious and comfortable and we had a great nights sleep.

After funeral get together. The staff were very obliging and helpful and adequately met all our needs. The buffet meal supplied for fifty people was an excellent assortment and of good quality with a nice area set aside for us with easy access to the buffet, bar and toilets. Thanks to all staff. We asked for a quiet area as one of our party had hearing difficulties, and we were given a table in the delightful "Vault", dating from 1645. We were made very welcome and the meals and service were very good.

Really excellent service last night (Thanks Brad and Dan). We came to this restaurant a few years ago and were not overly impressed but we could not fault it last night under its new management. The Manager spotted us looking at some of the features of the building and took the time to show us some photos as he could see we were interested (we had paid by then so he did not need to do this - lovely !). Food was great and good choice. Welcoming and cosy environment (and would be lovely in the summer to sit outside). We live quite close but I am tempted to book a room for the night and stay over as a treat as everything was fab. Thanks.

After viewing Wasing Park for a potential wedding venue we popped in this beautiful pub for a Sunday roast. The pub is absolutely gorgeous unfortunately that is where the pleasantries end. We waited an hour for a table which was absolutely fine as were warned about the wait as they were busy. We were sat down and could tell from the other guests surrounding us the ship was sinking everyone was receiving awful service. We then waited an hour for 2 roasts. Nobody came and spoke to us even after getting up and enquiring where are food was then waited another 20 mins. Food finally arrived topped with a burnt Yorkshire pudding. Nobody did a check back on us. Not even a manager, nobody took any ownership of this awful service. Finally got our plates cleared and then managed to complain to an actual manager who then got another manager who we are assuming is the general Manager or of some “senior management”. He then proceeded to inform us that as HE let too many guests in and HE let them all order at the same time and HIS kitchen couldn’t cope and he did a favour by squeezing us in. He then offered to take off the food £30 worth of roast dinners. Then the 2 tables next to us then had issues with their Bill’s and got charged for stuff they hadn’t even received. At this point we had wasted 3 hours of our lives waiting to be seen and eat so not impressed as no one even came and took our payment. We then had a heated discussion at the bar as the senior manager seemed to expect some sort of Medal for giving us £30 off the bill and kept reminding us that we had eaten all of our dish but thought it was perfectly expectable to give us burnt food and waste that much time to only have 1 course and 1 drink. We then got accused of theft because we ate the food and didn’t pay for the food even though he offered to take it off the bill. He couldn’t answer my question to why we didn’t get informed of the wait when we ordered as this seems like a simple part of communication to preform. If you have a kitchen that can’t cope or not enough staff then you shouldn’t continue to sit people or if you are going to slam your staff then at least tell you guests there will be a delay. The worst part of this senior managers customer service skills, sorry lack of, he didn’t even apologise. Not one apology for this awful service which would have actually satisfied us instead of the constant blame of others. An apology would have gone a long way - free tip. Looking at the previous responses to trip advisor reviews I’m sure there will be feedback to the team and an excuse.

First time we have come here and will be the last.

14 of us for an old folks dinner - not exactly, but near enough. A welcoming and very pleasant pub/restaurant with a homely atmosphere so my personal expectations were high. A good selection of food. We were seated at about 19:30 and food arrived at about 21:00 hours - in mitigation some of us had starters. The food was of good quality and definitely no complaints but the service was dreadfully slow so we lost out on puddings as they stopped serving - very disappointed. On the balance of probability the next visit will reflect on a better service. However I have to also make you aware that car parking was a struggle - be warned and go early.

Stayed for a night to attend a local wedding. Staff could not have been friendlier or more helpful. Bar lunch was very tasty and generous. We were able to leave our bags (as we had not opted to pay £20 for early check-in) and they were in our room when we returned from the wedding reception. We had clear instructions for late arrival but, in the end, one of the staff was still there with a smile despite the late hour. Room was comfortable (great bed), bathroom was clean and well-equipped. Generous provision of tea, coffee (Nespresso in the room) and water, plus a large honesty bar for those with munchies/ late-night thirst. Breakfast was very well-presented and promptly served. Excellent eggs Benedict and very generous, tasty porridge. Altogether, faultless. Strongly recommended.

This was our first visit to the Hinds Head - we will definitely return! The bar and restaurant are very attractive areas, well decorated and comfortable. Our food was delicious - the steak was superb. Recommended!

Stayed here for two nights, overall a very nice place, a very quaint coaching inn. The room was very good, clean and had everything you'd needed, a free bottle of Fuller's beer was a nice touch. 10 pillows on the bed was a little OTT, the pillows that I didn't use I put down the side of the bed, it was the only place I could put them, if there were 2 of us I don't know where I'd have put them! They provided a bath sheet type towel, very large and thick, personally I had trouble drying myself with it, also, the towels weren't changed, probably forgot, there was another set of towels as the room was made up for 2 people but I used the old towels, no real problem. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Service at the bar and in the restaurant wasn't good, the first night there was one person doing the bar and serving the food, so it was a little slow but acceptable, the second night, even though more staff had been brought in due to the number of bookings and a large party arriving, I was taken to my table at 7:15, starters turned up in a reasonable amount of time but main meal arrived at 8:45 BUT it was worth waiting for, the Spiced Carrot, Lentil, Feta and Beetroot Salad it was delicious. I didn't eat breakfast even though it was included in the room rate, (too early for me) but I was offered a takeaway to eat later which I took them up on, just a couple of croissants, the offer was very much appreciated. But for the service I would have given it 5 stars. I would definitely return.

One of the best Sunday roast I've had, the beef was so tasty and tender. The service was very friendly and helpful, the found the perfect spot for my pram as well. Couldn't have been any better.

We went with a group of 5 adults and 5 kids. The restaurant was not busy but since only one seemingly inexperienced server was working all the tables it took ages to get our order placed, starters (of bread!) took an hour to arrive. We sat down at 1.30 and eventually ate our meals by 4. We asked for pudding at that point but were told the kitchen had shut and there was ‘nothing they could do’. There was no warning about the kitchen shutting, so we could order pudding in advance. Children were disappointed as the brownie was promised to them

Stopped by for breakfast/brunch and was pleased with the variety of dishes offered. Very nice coffee and great service . Lovely surround and was able to sit by the fire doing some work before leaving. Glad I got in early as the car park was jam packed by the time I left.

Stayed here for two nights with various other guests for a wedding in Wasing Park. Very comfortable and clean bedroom and delicious fresh breakfast. Roaring fire and unusual ales. Good service too. Would have liked music a little lower volume at breakfast. Otherwise very attentive and we felt well looked after.

I returned to the Hinds Head for an overnight stay after an excellent experience in November and received a warm welcome from Amy and her team, although I arrived late in the evening the restaurant was closing, however they rustled up a nice hot meal before the chef went home. My room was well appointed and cosy with all the amenities you would expect. Definitely recommended for all groups of visitors.

Four of us had dinner here. The food took ages to arrive, they got the order wrong and offered to take one of the dishes off the bill, but didn't until we complained. Reall underwhelming.

We're pretty frequent clients of the restaurant and have in the past found it excellent for food and service but recently things are slipping badly and recent visits have been very disappointing. Most recently were even embarrassed by the meal served to visitors we brought from abroad, English food living up to its depressing international reputation. Half the menu was sold out and what we did get ( Sunday early evening) had the whiff of leftovers reheated, with a meat sauce served with the vegetarian pie .Service was bafflingly slow in an almost empty restaurant and the sole serving person seemed stranded and alone. We missed dessert as we did not feel like risking another 45 minute wait between courses. Really sorry to see this decline as we have had some of our very best meals in the area here up till some months ago.

I never usually make breakfast but i'm glad i did on this occaision. Came out very quick upon ordering, hot and fresh..... Excellent

Ate at the Hinds Head on a Sunday night .

Menus looked interesting but some dishes were not available. 4 of us had different starters, main meals & desserts. Would recommend the ham hock, linguini was very oily and the pie pastry very hard and difficult to cut. The Bakewell tart was good but the coconut rice was very salty. We have been in the past but will probably not return for a while, not the best meal to celebrate a birthday.

We had a lovely stay here - rooms are beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was varied, plentiful and tasty. Dinner in the restaurant was also very enjoyable.

We stayed a night here. Room was comfortable and well equipped. Breakfast was tasty with lots of options.

I cannot fault the room, food or service. The rooms are just beautiful and provided everything we needed. The restaurant itself holds so much character and the food delicious. Every single member of staff was so attentive and polite, nothing was too much trouble. Would definitely recommend.

Stayed at The Hinds Head Hotel for my daughters Wedding. Had a fabulous meal on Friday evening. Sat in a lovely alcove so very private. Salmon, Liver and burgers were just some of the meals chosen and all were beautifully presented and delicious so no complaints from anyone. The waitress was very friendly, chatty and helpful even providing colouring etc for a very tired18 month old.

Really enjoyed the roast and trimmings. Service was pleasant and unobstrusive. Waitress recommended tarte tatin for dessert, what a treat it was freshly made we all chose it and absolutely loved it.

I had a lovely meal - cauliflower soup, steak and mushroom pie and pistachio tiramisu. All beautifully cooked and a good sized portion. My waitress, Louise, was extremely attentive and did a fabulous job.

I’ve been to this place many many times over the last 5 years. I went this evening and my goodness the food was atrocious. Both the starters I ordered lacked complete and utter flavour. The dessert I ordered was below average too. I’m not sure what’s happening here but seriously the food quality has gone out the window. I certainly will not be returning for a long long while. The menu is not even thought out and just mixed with random flavours. I’m genuinely disgusted. Seriously, avoid wasting your money. The only positive was the waitress was very polite and attentive, so credit to her for doing an excellent job.

After a tiring day finishing our boating holiday at Aldermarston Wharf we dashed into the Butt Inn at 5.50pm to be told the kitchen shut at 6pm, no flexibility there then! The barman suggested the Hind's Head which was a mile & quarter away so we had little choice but to start walking. It was a very welcoming sight! The roast beef was beautifully tender and the service attentive. The barman booked a taxi back to the wharf for us, thank you Hind's Head.

popped in for lunch a table was found quickly ,staff efficient and friendly,the menu had pub classics or light bites so very good we had not been here for several years so much improved ,large car park.

Went here recently for a family meal. Veggie “ options” were extremely limited ie the stereotypical aubergine dish or a salad. The “veggie” roast isn’t suitable for vegetarians, maybe the roasties are cooked in animal fat or maybe it’s because there’s bacon in the peas. Such a shame because the rest of the family’s food looked nice

We had a lovely stay with a quality evening meal, two great nights sleep and two fab breakfasts. The welcome was friendly, the staff fun and efficient and the overall experience first rate. The food quality was high, selection wide, portion sizes generous and prices more than reasonable. We will definitely be back for another stay soon.

Visited on a Sunday night. Lovely pub - well decorated and comfortable. Staff v pleasant. Food was good - slightly on pricey side for what it was but v well presented. Only let down was the beer selection - only one draft ale on - bit of a shame that as I was looking forward to a pint of something slightly more exciting than Pride.

The staff at the Hind’s Head are great, couldn’t be more helpful, and when the Head Chef is in attendance the food is both delicious and served quickly. The rooms are pleasant and the beer garden is spacious, and all in all this is a very nice pub/hotel.
