I like this garden centre, I like food, staff is always friendly and helpful. However, I had to stop ordering my favourite Hillier’s breakfast as today (15.09) was second time that I witnessed how staff handled toast. There were two girls with dark brown hair and one guy that didn’t use tongs provided when handling toast. I’ve seen the same guy later on clearing tables. I’ve seen in the past that some of your staff use tongs to get bread out of packaging, transfer to toaster, out of toaster, hold when cutting and transfer to plate and this is how I want my toast to be handled otherwise it’s disgusting. Please train your staff properly on handling food!

Worst ploughman’s I have ever had. No salad just 2 very dried sticks of celery tomatoes were ok. Bread was Chibata bread. Really dry. Apple was so brown as already cut and inedible. A very expensive meal for £13.99

Went for an afternoon, which was one of the best we have had for a long time, sandwiches well filled, glorious scone with more than enough jam and cream plus a wonderful selection of cakes. This is now a self service cafe. No menus anywhere, which is a pain with young children who you are trying to seat as it involves queuing for ages after photographing the menu. why no QR codes on the tables for ordering purposes? The food was so mediocre and unappetising. Child’s jacket potato had tuna plonked on half a potato with absolutely nothing on the side, the Welsh rarebit was basically some cheese on toast. All the food was lacking and the cost of decent pub food, which this definitely wasn’t. Where are the side salads for instance? Didn’t feel good value for money and the staff (if you can find any!) were unhelpful and I felt like an inconvenience. It was definitely much better when it was Rosebourne. It’s a shame our two local garden centres are now Hilliers. It would be interesting to know the new Google rating average since the changeover…

First time in the restaurant since it has become self service. Not convenient when you have several people who all need to choose their food & drink at the counter. I ordered a ploughman's and was so disappointed, nothing like what it used to be, peeled apples that were browning, small slice of cheese, processed ham, no salad leaves or coleslaw, I won't be coming back

I'm really disappointed with our visit to the cafe today. We've been coming here for years and it was always a pleasure to visit as the quality of the food and service was great. Today we had one order of ham (processed and plastic like), egg and chips (cold) and one order of quiche (pastry thick and uncooked) and green salad (warm wilted leaves from leaving it under the heater for 10 mins - I could see it sitting there). What a shame that Hillers have taken the 'great' out of this place. We won't be returning.

We made a special effort to visit our local garden centre cafe, we’d been many times previously and had a pleasant experience. Sadly, the cafe had changed since our last visit. It’s now a self service cafe, no longer offering waitress service or the invaluable mobile phone ordering service online. I am in a wheelchair and this was one of the reasons we used the cafe regularly. My husband went off to order, he’d been gone some considerable time, if he wasn’t in sight I’d have thought he’d left me there! He returned shaking his head carrying a tray with coffees and muffins. The coffee was tepid at best and the muffins were not as described (raspberry and white chocolate, my husbands was devoid of raspberries!) I’m afraid this has put us off returning. We loved our occasional visits, enjoying these facilities. We won’t be returning.

Went for the first time since the changeover from Rosebourne and ordered the fish finger sandwich. There was quite a long wait (in fairness it was peak time) but when it did arrive, it came with very thick, somewhat unappealing white bread, and was slavered in tartar sauce. The fish was probably quite nice but totally overpowered. On the positive side, the plants and accessories are well laid out and extensive.

So sorry but very disappointed with last visit, the shop floor now has a bigger food hall and restaurant than gardening equipment. I realise you need to look after your margins. However visiting a gardening centre, would like to have a good stock to choose from. No lawn edging of any kind, so went to Dobbies and found what i needed. In future if i want a cafe or food i will visit again but for gardening items will probably go elsewhere, which is a shame.

Oh dear ! The new refurbished restaurant is a definite backward step and now considering somewhere else to have Sunday breakfast and seeing the empty tables at 10:30 it might seem others are voting with their feet. Now there is only the menu on the board as you enter and you can only order at the till no online ordering any more. This new way meant a waited for 10mins in a queue to order and then 30mins for the breakfast which came with white toast not the brown we asked for. The sausages in the breakfast were quite small. This is not the only change, not for the good, I noticed a while back they had stopped selling the patisserie style cakes which is a great shame as there isn’t anywhere else in the area that sell those.

Having always been very impressed with the food when it was a 'Rosebourne' sad to say that the quality of food and care has gone downhill big time. My daughter had to return her £12.99 ploughman's today for several reasons, the pickles looked like they'd been thrown in the ramekin dishes all mucky on the outside. Half a slice of fatty ham, cheddar looked unappetising with a white mould like substance on it, celery looked limp all for the grand price of £12.99. She returned it and asked for just a quick bowl of chips as now we were running out of time for her to wait for another meal. The waiter we spoke to was very apologetic and offered for her to take home a cake of her choosing, lovely polite lad called Michael. As for my £8.99 jacket potato with tuna 'lemon mayonnaise' I reckon there must have been all of teaspoon in a mound of tuna, jacket potato was tough, so prices have gone up and quality way down. What a shame.

After previously giving a 5* review only a year ago, I am now updating with 2* review after having a very unpleasant visit to the Café today. I understand that they are under new management and they have ruined what was a great local resource. The shop was absolutely fine and is the only reason that I did not give a 1* review. I visited today with my partner and daughter who was back from Uni for the weekend, so we were going out for what we thought would be a nice treat. We were expected to queue to be seated right next to some automatic doors that kept opening and closing behind us. There were 4 people in front us when we arrived and after about 5 minutes they were seated after which the staff member went and stood behind the till despite having seen us and with no one to serve. I then had to ask to be seated after waiting for another 10 minutes. With now around 10 people queuing behind us through the doors in the cold. Previously you were professionally greeted at the door inside the store and if there was a small queue it would be in the warmth of the garden centre. After finally being seated, we were told not to use the app to place the order as we have done on every previous occasion and so had to queue (again) at the till to order. The food came out fairly quickly after only 10 minutes and the food was good quality. Another 20 minutes later after the drinks had failed to arrive, I had to ask for assistance once again. The drinks order appeared to be lost. After 23 minutes a tray arrived but the drinks were wrong and had 2 pots of tea rather than tea and filter coffee that had been ordered. We were asked if we had used the app to order, as if we had caused the problem. The drinks were fine but as they arrived after the food had been consumed it was very unsatisfactory. I feel really sorry for the staff who were keeping busy despite being less than half capacity. The issue here appears to be a management problem and an overall lack of direction. My previous feedback from a year ago was quite a contast: This is a great local resource. We often pop in just to buy some freshly baked bread. We also love the potatoes from here as are very good quality and as they are unwashed they stay fresh for weeks. The cafe serves excellent food and makes an occasional treat. Not to mention the butchers, frozen foods, gift shop and garden centre.

To be honest we were disappointed. I took my parents for lunch. The place was busy, first impression a good sign. We were showed to our seat, given menus and explained how to order, at the counter or via app. We chose via app which was easy to follow. Drinks followed with a little wait. The food was very disappointing, my parents both had the soup which was French Onion. The didn’t really enjoy it saying some of the onions were tough like outside. The artisan bread it was served with however was excellent they both said that with a chunk of pate would have been better. I had a chicken and bacon wrap which was quite dry and the chicken tasted like it had been frozen. It came with slaw that was just plopped on the plate. I am sorry to say that I won’t be recommending or returning there is an independent one a little further a field but it is if much higher standard and also cheaper.

So disappointed with Hillier’s Christmas display and variety today. For years I have chosen Rosebourne Garden Centre as my first call for buying Christmas decorations, their display has been amazing year on year. This year, with Hillier’s buying out Rosebourne, their display was reduced by 2/3’s, boring, uninspiring and lacked its magical groto feeling. Went to Henry Street Garden Centre afterwards where much more effort was put into purchasing, displays and variety. Please bring back the display model of former year’s Hillier’s.

Really nice sized garden centre with a really good selection of plants, gifts, food etc. We used to visit quite regularly when it was Rosebourne but the last few visits as Hilliers have been a little disappointing. The layout hasn’t changed too much, but the changes they have made means it no longer flows very well, twice we were blocked in (once by the Restaurant and then again through the Christmas decorations) which felt a bit odd. The Christmas displays also felt a lot smaller this year, although it’s still early in the season so that may well change. It’s still a lovely visit, and if you’d never seen it as ‘Rosebourne’ you’d probably not think any different but we both agreed we’d not rush back this time.

Remains a decent garden centre but the restaurant has really gone downhill. It used to be table service but now food is ordered from a QR code, unless the code doesn't work as on our visit last weekend. The very young staff member on the till didn't have much of a clue and the queue got even longer when someone ordered alcohol; the lad had to fetch his supervisor as he wasn't old enough to approve the order. We ordered sandwiches, which rather than coming with a side salad and crisps as in days gone by now just has a clump of coleslaw on the side. My wife's white bread was decent but my brown was thin and dry. The filling was a joke - supposed to be prawn mayo but just a sliver of mayo spread on the bread with prawns piled in between. I won't be eating there again. A real shame.

used to come here twice a week when it was rosebourne before hiller took over - we use to have mooch with family and friend but unfortunly it just a garden centre with a restruant very little to look at anymore , yes still have food hall and restruant is ok , we always picked up our favourite apple juice and as we left we used to take cardboard boxes they recyled - which they no longer doing which i think is very disapointing . we used to share the store with friend and family but we can get apple juice closer to home and wont be returning . very disapointing in the garden centre since hiller have taken over - knew it go down hill .

Nice garden centre, but disappointed with the cafe. 4 hot drinks and 3 cold pieces for cake took over 40 minutes to arrive. Saw lots of people that ordered after us being served before us, which is always frustrating. Food was reasonable when it arrived, but I have been here several times before and the food quality and service has always been better.

Shame it's no where need as good as it was when it was Rosebourne. I won't bother travelling out to it again.

Lovely big garden centre, lots of country living goods for ladies and gents, pretty gifts, both beautiful and functional accessories and furniture. Some good deals on for (free) members. Cafe is alright and not too badly priced; the afternoon tea looks gorgeous. Food is a little expensive but then the quality is very good; 99p for fresh baked scones and £4 for big tasty pasties or pies. Really nice for somewhere local.

Good old school proper Chinese take-away, every dish cooked properly, (eg perfect noodle texture) and generous portion. Very friendly customer service. My 13 year old son and I were very happy.

The food was amazing, but the service wasn't so great even though it was not busy
