I recently visited the garden centre cafe for breakfast and ordered two hash browns. The food itself was quite satisfying; the hash browns were nicely cooked and flavorful. However, I was disappointed by the service. The staff, particularly one person who I believe might have been named Tegan, appeared grumpy and rude throughout my interaction with them. Their demeanor detracted from the overall experience, leaving me with a mixed impression despite the tasty food. Food was ream though From K. Ian Moore

Where do I start? Between the weird outdoor statues, and grossly overpriced coke zero’s (price marked 75p, but sold for £3), there was not much else to see except the out of date furniture and strange tat. There was however, your standard gardening supplies available to purchase, and some outdoor clothing options. We won’t be returning, but somebody else might.

Shockingly slow service, the drinks arrived after 50 minute wait, then a further delay and the food finally arrives. It gets returned as they cannot even cook a fried egg, it was raw and snotty. Shockingly poor

Good surroundings , rustic and typical old style garden centre. The food was good but very expensive for what it was. The most expensive garden centre restaurant for many miles. The gents toilet is appalling and features very old fittings with a very slow inefficient hand dryer.

Gosh, extremely surprised and disappointed. How can Hildreths justify charging £13-20 for a spray bottle of Vanish when Morrisons sell the identical one for £5-45.!!!! They didn’t have the courtesy to acknowledge my email when I wrote to ask for an explanation. It was the first visit for myself and several friends but we shall not be returning.

Whilst the breakfasts we had were of acceptable quality they were very expensive. We looked around the Garden Centre later and found everything there to also Bev overpriced. Our local garden centre in Tring have a fabulous restaurant that is well worth a visit, and the garden centre is far superior to Hildreths. We‘ll stick to that in future.

We came on Father's Day and we expected it to be busy but got a table straight away. We were given a special father's day menu. To be honest we were shocked at the prices. A full English was 14.40 and tea was 2.40. There were no options to have just a bacon roll or smaller breakfast. When the food eventually came out it was quite basic. Bacon was cooked folded in half so the underside was uncooked and the toast was just cheap thin sliced bread. No one came to check if everything was OK during the meal. Also brown sauce was cheap watery sauce. If you are going to charge 15.00 pound for breakfast then get the suppliers to make better than sub standard cheap items.

A family of 3 we went and had breakfast. The restaurant is cute and the menu had good options but pricey. We had 3 hot drinks, 2 cooked breakfasts and 1 bacon sandwich, including the 12.5% optional service charge it cost us £50! The cooked breakfast wasn’t anything special and the toast doesn’t even have real butter. The bacon was lovely sausage was cheap. The staff are lovely but I won’t be returning because of the cost.

Visited with my mother for lunch and plant shopping. Very polite and helpful staff. Great products (pots & very good quality flowers and plants). Had lunch & coffee in the cafe, both very fresh & beautiful! Very friendly and swift service with our order by the lady serving us/chefs. Sat outside in the pretty and inviting area, overlooking the plants. Great little shop within the centre selling clothes and home decor. Have visited previously to use the ironmongers for household jobs, which also houses a great pet shop area and upstairs has a homeware/baking and gift shop. Have also purchased garden furniture from Hildreths in the past, which is of high quality. Plenty of parking available. Lovely day out, accommodating for multiple interests, highly recommend.

This Garden centre and DIY centre which is more than handy for Missdonians. Also has an upfitted cafe. It's cute. Its clearly aimed at the older generations and is dog friendly. I had breakfast here, and I, as an expert in all things fried breakfast, was actually blown away how good it was. The DIY center is simply the best thing that has ever happened to me. I swear to you. You could come in here and say I need the con rods for 1 820's paddle steamer and they probably have it. I had to clean out an old limescale ridden toilet and they had this chemical so potent that I think could well be what we were looking for in Iraq. That you can come here get some hard to find DIY stuff you'd normally have to find a specialist for and have a great breakfast. Well sugar, you might just feel like Denzil Washington in the Equalizer.

Hand Gel NHS Track and Trace on the door and Gel just inside but that's where it stopped. 4 friends met today and none of us have phones with the App. No sign to be asked to wait to be seated and no staff near door to ask. We just walked in and found table. At table we weren't asked had we signed in. Menu very limited and nothing basic for quick snack. 'That's on the counter' but 'but we aren't allowed to go and look!' Eventually we ordered and got food and that was mostly ok. Salt and Pepper pots put on the table - that's not allowed! Drinks brought and handed round - that's not allowed - everywhere else we go we have to take from the tray ourselves.. Milk was only one jug and apart from needing more as we had 3 hot drinks and only enough for one, we shouldn't be sharing jugs. It wasn't the best experience for the friend who hasn't been anywhere since lock down and we certainly wont be going back anytime soon. Oh they did have a one way system - well in and out doors but whole experience wasnt good.

The cafe re-opened yesterday under new management. The decor is much the same (cherry ladders on the ceiling, Tiffany lampshades etc.) but the tables are more spaced out for social distancing and it's table servce only. There is a new menu, with more modern options (though traditional options such as steak and ale pie are also available.) I had an excellent duck and orange salad (which comes in two portion sizes) and my husband went for the steak and ale pie. Both were very good. They weren't serving puddings yesterday, but will do in future. In the meantime they have a selection of homemade cakes available (including GF options). This used to be a great little restaurant for a reasonably priced breakfast or lunch, but of late the staff have changed more often than the weather and the result now is an increase in prices, a revised menu, variable food quality (mostly poor) and cutlery that looks like it was washed in cold water. Such a shame and with increased competition you would think they would try harder, won't bother again.

The staff were friendly and service was good. The food certainly was not up to the standard of previous visits. The smoked salmon quiche was thin and brown and? burnt on the top. Previous quiches eaten there have been much tastier and of more substance. The prawn salad consisted of tiny prawns almost like shrimps that tasted recently defrosted and had little flavour. It is such a shame as there is a nice atmosphere in the restaurant and it feels relaxed.

I am writing this in view of recent events. For several weeks now things have not been good at Hildreths cafe. At our last visit (and I do mean last, as I think you'll agree) we were served particularly hard poached eggs (bullets my granny would have called them) - my sister complained as we had specifically asked for soft eggs and neither of us can abide hard ones, we didn't ask for replacements as the food had taken so long to appear. As we were leaving the cook came out of the kitchen and, upon being told by the waitress that we were not happy, he shouted after us "THEY WON'T BE BACK THEN". My mother, wheelchair bound, hard of hearing and in her nineties asked me what he said. When I told her she said "It's my fault, me and this wheelchair are such a nuisance ". I tried to reassure her but shame on them for making an elderly lady feel that way! And we had taken to ordering our food separately on order to try and help the cook get it right. No need to say we won't be back but it also means we will no longer spend weekly at the shop, garden centre and ironmonger. Businesses that treat their customers in this way do not deserve to thrive.

My friend took me for lunch and I was very disappointed with what was served. They charged £7-95 for ham, egg x 2 and chips. WHAT A RIP OFF. When it turned up the ham was plastic and 1 thin slice, the fried eggs were hard and you got about 6 chips. If you do go - which I won’t be again. Do not order the cheap plastic ham. I am usually a good eater but returned it to a lady who looks very unwelcoming who assured me it was cut that day. It doesn’t matter about it being cut that day - it was the quality and the thickness. She got two eggs refried and returned it to me EXACTLY the same except the eggs were at least runny. I can eat most things but felt that the ham was tasteless and plastic. When she asked me again if that was ok she could she I wasn’t happy but I could tell her customer service skills were terrible and she just walked away. I didn’t eat my meal and a very nice waitress came and asked me how it was so I told her. She apologised profusely and got me a refund - her customer service skills were brilliant- at least you felt she cared about what she was serving and I felt sorry for her having to serve it up!! I don’t usually write reviews but just didn’t want anyone else to get ripped off as I had been. We will not be visiting this place again and will advise all our friends not to do the same. SHAME ON THEM. I expected better from such a place.

My Daughter-in-law is a vegetarian and as the 3 of us only wanted light refreshments we ordered feta and quinoa panini, but none available, nor vegetarian quiche, mozzarella tomato and pesto panini, or as a final substitute, Brie (for red onion and Brie panini). Bottled fizzy water and Bulmers cider O.K.( how could it not be?), but cup for my pot of tea was stained and milk jug had someone else's food debris stuck to the lip of it. After a bit of a wait, the breakfasts were brought to our table, but one had fried egg, instead of scrambled. The waitress apologised & advised us that the correct order would be with us shortly. We also asked about our coffee order, as it had not arrived. Again an apology was offered, along with the offer of a further 2 free coffees, if we required them, for the problems we had experienced. We were very happy to accept the offer. The breakfasts were very tasty & wholesome. The extension of the cafe is brilliant however it feels very divided at the moment, therefore makes it not very friendly. Lets just say it is not a place myself and others will be returning to in a hurry. I used to go there all the time last Summer, one waitress in particular who unfortunately has gone back to University always made sure myself and my family were okay, always had a smile on her face and generally a lovely 20 year old. Luckily enough she comes back every other weekend. Lets see if you can get yourself back together Hildreths, perhaps invest in some new staff.

Went here for lunch a week or so back with my mum and considering we only ordered a sandwich and panini it was hugely disappointing. Firstly, they've tried to expand the cafe but in doing so they've ruined any atmosphere - it feels like 3 separate cafes and what makes it worse is that the waiters are just shouting out 'table 14' for a couple of minutes to find the correct table as you get given a spoon with a number on when you order. Very off putting and looks very unprofessional. Why not just number the tables? As a result, this slows down what is already a very slow service. Considering we arrived when most people were leaving and the cafe was only quarter full, it took over half an hour for 1 panini. What made this worse was that we had to ask twice for the panini and when it finally arrived it was glued to the plate. Clearly someone had made it and it had just been left on the side for a good 5 minutes as even with a knife it still stuck to the bottom of the plate. It gets worse when they can't make a hot pot of tea - it was lukewarm at best by the time it arrived and there was no one around to complain to. Waiters looked panicked about trying to find the tables to serve food at and running around like headless chickens; they were not interested in those who had already got their food. One particular young waiter was so unprofessional you could see his bum as he leant down to pick up and put down plates - put you off your food (if you can remove it from the plate in the first place). We went to the counter to complain but unfortunately the queue was so long and taking so long to move that we gave up and went as we were by this time late for our train. All in all, a very disappointing service throughout and we will definitely not be returning.

Having been a couple of times before for a snack I yesterday took my old mum for lunch and we both chose jacket potatoes. She had a generous helping of Tuna (which could not be said for the quantity of my prawns) but her blunt knife could not cut through the very tough potato skin (I had to cut it for her with my knife which was only slightly sharper). I ordered Prawn with Marie Rose sauce with the addition of cheese to be put under the prawns so that it could melt with the heat from the potato.Sadly, we were both very disappointed to find the potatoes were only warm, not hot, mine not even hot enough to melt the cheese! There was very little evidence of Marie Rose sauce but there was a layer of water, suggesting the prawns had not been fully defrosted! Each time a member of staff came outside I tried to attract their attention but none of them looked over. As I am having trouble with my knee at the moment I couldn’t face the struggle of getting out of the chair so didn’t take it back till I had almost finished which was when I thought I should mention the problem so that they were aware of the situation. Unfortunately, the young lady on the counter was not at all concerned and had nothing to say though she did eventually agree to give me a refund of 75p for the cheese, which I wouldn’t have chosen had I known it would not be melted! When the food/drinks were brought to us we were not offered salt, pepper, sauces nor even sugar for our cappuccinos! All in all a very disappointing £16.

Hildriths calls its self a garden centre , however the things that it does well is: feeding people with bacon baps, scones and tea and coffee. the hardware shop is very good and you can often get items that are difficult to find in other DIY chains. However The shop that sells garden equipment is a bit of a muddle and on the whole more expensive than elsewhere. I would never buy plants from here as they always look as if they have not been looked after properly and are on their way out. There is also a gift shop that stocks some unusual and charming gifts. All in all a mixed bag.

Hildreths Garden Centre is a warren of separate outlets which includes the café/restaurant. a large outdoor nursery, an indoor gift shop, a traditional indoor garden centre and a huge separate ironmongers, pet supplies and kitchen shop that seems to sell anything and everything for the household. The actual café/restaurant is a bit limited in its approach and its ambience and does not tempt one to want to stay for anything more than a coffee and perhaps a cake. The latter was not top class and the service not very engaging. It has to be said that the garden centre itself is manned by humourless mature male sales assistants that look most uncomfortable and miserable in their roles. With a bit of creative management the whole place could be lifted to a higher level but on the plus side some of its products and plants are very good.

When our tea arrived and we poured the milk you could see a couple of old milk rings round the jug - always says to me that the jug is not washed out properly before being replenished. It was a bit of a sad event, we won't go again.

Five cyclists looking for coffee and cake were rudely turned away by the staff. "No we don't have anywhere for bikes. We don't have bike racks, you can't bring them in here". I think they should have demanded their money back from the charm school!

From time to time my wife and I pop in here for a snack or Sunday lunch without making a reservation. Last Sunday we didn't fancy roast beef or roast turkey so we both ordered steak and onion plate pie. This turned out to be minced beef and onion but it was deliciously tasty, the crust cooked to a T, well cooked vegetables including Brussels which were edible and not like bullets. To follow, we had desserts, a delicious pear frangipane tart for me and an orange and mandarin cheesecake for me which she only let me have a small taste, but which was equally delicious. The only slight downside is that they don't have a drinks licence, but they do have a fridge with cold soft drinks. It is better to reserve a table as they can be very busy and we have often sat on a wooden bench at a long table, but both clientele and staff are extremely friendly.

It is nice to see a cafe busy, however there is a very limited (small) menu here and when I visited with two friends today (Tuesday) there were no jacket potatoes or chilli. Nice place but please try to keep supplies of basic items such as potatoes as without these the menu is even smaller!
