Hickory's Smokehouse Poynton in Cheshire East

What a fantastic experience mainly down to the staff. We visited the night after the Super Bowl and the staff that had worked until 7am were full of high spirits and looked after us. The visit was for my son’s 9th birthday and he was looked after. The staff made a fuss with a badge, invited him to make a giant milkshake and then delivered a donut covered in cream with a large sparkler. The whole visit was fantastic as the staff communicated so well all night. Special shout out to the 2 bearded warriors (Jack and the gent who trapped his thumb in the fridge, we never found out your name) I forgot to mention the food was amazing too. We will be back.

My wife and I visited the first time for lunch on a midweek afternoon. We were so impressed we booked a party of six in for our sons birthday the following Friday evening. The food was amazing! My son and I shared a massive Smokehouse Platter and I just didn't want it to end. Absolutely delicious and everything cooked to perfection. The rest of the party had varying meals Inc mac n cheese, sizzling fajitas and steak. There wasn't a crumb left on any plate. I washed mine down with 2 pints of very nice IPA. The booking process was easy, we were seated on time and had very attentive and friendly waiters. The tip was included in the final bill but we tipped extra anyway because of the whole dining experience we had. I was also moved to go to the kitchen staff to thank them which I've never done before. We have visiting the USA many times and this food is as good and as plentiful as anything weve had over there. On this night we had a guitar vocalist on who was sensibly quiet enough to be enjoyed without being obtrusive. This added to an already good atmosphere. Although this venue is a good 20 minutes drive away we have found our new place for celebrations. As well as that we will be visiting with our dog, Molly, when we walk her in the area. Dogs are welcome and well catered for outside (with heating) and in a spacious cosy heated shed with a large tv and Country music through the speakers. I can't think of a single negative comment. Well done to everyone.

The first time I when to Hickory’s in Poynton I received unnecessary and unwarranted remarks from our waitress throughout our entire meal. Personally I'm a slow eater, I like to enjoy my food and take my time eating. I would receive comments from our waitress like ‘you taking your time with those chips aren’t you?’ And ‘couldn’t finish the go big or go home?’. Usually I would brush these comments off however these sharp comments felt excessive in a provoking and targeting way. I didn’t finish eating as I felt too uncomfortable to enjoy my meal anymore. A few months later I return to the same restaurant only to receive the wrong order and an another uncomfortable interaction with the waiter when asking to not add the tip to the bill. Over all, the food is enjoyable and I think the chefs do an incredible job making the food, however the front of house and waiters / waitresses are incredibly unprofessional and anchor the rest of the staff. If you would like an enjoyable experience, I would not recommend going to this restaurant. I believe that the potential in the food is wasted by the staffs behaviour. Disappointing.

Second time we have been here and cannot recommend anywhere else. When they say the meat is smoked for 16 hours they mean it. You need quality produce to create what they do here and quality is what you get. The service is great and the servers can’t do enough. It’s nice to go somewhere and see all the staff happy and enjoying their jobs, even the chefs liked happy as well Our new favourite place

I very much enjoyed the place. Food was delicious and the service was good up until the end, strangely had to wait a while for the bill.

First time for me and the wife, saturday night busy time and lots of kids but that didn’t bother us, we still enjoyed the place and the food. We got the THE SMOKEHOUSE PLATTER for two which is impossible to finish, so you can take some home in a doggy bag. Starters was lovely, bacon bite’s with cheese dip and the chicken tacos are tasty 😋. also i can recommend the ipa which has a tropical flavour. The car park has plenty of space though it is dark.

Great tasting authentic American food and drink staff are all great not waiting too long and food is always served hot great place to go for meals went again got the platter great ordered the crumble waffle dessert got peach french toast disappointed wondered how they could get that wrong spoiled a romantic evening they were obviously wanting us out of the restaurant

It's ok, better than fast food as you can sit down properly with a knife and fork. The staff were what made the difference, really helpful and nice.

We went on Christmas eve so it was busy but the place was dirty food all over the floor tables barely wiped and the food well what can I say , it was cold and not what I expected I ordered a spicy chicken burger and it was bland . Very let down . I would not recommend this place.

My favourite place to eat, is just right up my street, portions are great and it’s all reasonably priced ,, we’ve been to them all now and the standards and quality never drop 10/10

Fantastic experience for my husband's 30th birthday, staff went all out for the party. Big thank you to Macky for the Bourbon masterclass, Will for the excellent serving with good humour and to the manager Jake for looking after us. All allergens were managed well.

This place is brilliant. Can’t believe we only just discovered it. The food, decor, atmosphere, and service were all 5 stars. Also well priced. Looking forward to coming back.

Really enjoyed it, service was great, there were lots of staff on very busy, I was hesitant at first, but when in poynton do as they do stuff ya face 😋 I was driving so I had an orange cordial for free X2, the staff have a very positive attitude and are friendly and honest, the place is big very BIG not like the old veron arms, we definitely be going again, do not be put off by what appears to be high prices you definitely get your money's worth, great place for the salad dodgers although there's a few on the menu, all the young guns and family's go there, my only slight negative was the singer guitarist who only added to the noise, I really don't think they need a singer or music live or otherwise everyone is talking and there's no one sat in the corner reading the papers, you should book it gets very busy very quickly and you will have a long wait for a table, we had a table booked for 7.45 and we sat down at 7.40 there's no rush to eat and go, believe that they were/arr doing movie nights for the kids, but don't quit me on that check the Web page and enjoy 🍻🥂

Always a joy to dine out here. Great decor and atmosphere which sets the theme, but isn't in-your-face about it. You can have a nice conversation with your table without it being too loud or too dark, etc. If it's someone's birthday, they get a pretty indoor sparkler, and NO singing. Thank goodness. Not to be pessimistic, but I love not having to hear a fifth tired forced rendition of some happy birthday knock-off... Big plus for me on this one! Food is absolutely delicious, nicely presented, the staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the seating is comfortable and not too cramped. If I need a go-to for a good meal out with people, this is the place.

I had never been here previously, onmy heard 2nd hand accounts. But i can now safely say this is one of the best restaurants I have had the pleasure of eating at in the last few years The food was to die for, i went for the fried Chicken and Waffle, the chicken is of a good quality and the waffle is just the right quantity to not make it sickly sweet, the only thing i would ask is for a couple more chicken strips, i got 3 unsure if that is the norm or not but it was still an amazing dish. The atmosphere is amazing, I've never been to america but coming to this place ticked all the boxes for what i would expect it to be like, the decor, music, staff dress code and even the drinks they have available. It all merges well together to create a perfect experience. The last thing I would like to mention is the staff, the staff were 10/10, quick to greet you, take drink and food orders, the stuff you would typically expect, but each and every one of the members i interacted with were as friendly as can be, it felt like i was talking to someone i had known for years. If you havent had the chance yet, definitely give this place a try.

Loved the American theming and great music! We started with the Southern Fried Chicken 'In A Basket and it melted in your mouth. Best chicken I have ever tasted! We then shared the Smokehouse Platter which my partner loved, and the chips were bang on tasty. Service was superb and accommodated a party of 10+ really well. Plenty of parking round the back.

Not impressed. Hickories have asked me to explain. Food brought was luke warm. A piece of bone with no meat on it around 4 inches by 2 inches in size and a a4 piece of paper folded into a quarter with 4 small slices of beef on it plonked on top of the food. Not what I expect for £35. Again not impressed

If you like your meat southern style then this is the place to go. Always busy and always a great atmosphere. Great and attentive staff. Great choice of food. Plenty for the kids to do. Book ahead at busy times or you will be disappointed. Highly recommended. Just had another mahoosive steak and salad.

Really enjoyed the food. Took ages to choose as there was so much choice. I opted for the he chicken Gumbo in the end. Very tasty and filling. Just what I needed today as it was a chilly walk to the restaurant. Hickorys ipa is well worth a go too. Nice flavours. Recommended.

Having recently returned from holiday in America it was great to try this place and feel like we were back on holiday. Simply put, this place is great. The food is really really nice. Up there with some of the stuff we ate on holiday. The service was really good too - how service should be. I can highly recommend here and our kids loved it too (the small cinema room and free popcorn a massive factor!) - a great venue for a party or family meal

Absolutely brilliant all round! Great atmosphere, food was perfect and service was fabulous. Out server was Lilly and she was a delight, she offered recommendations based on what we said and she couldn't have recommended us a more perfect dish, she got it so right we asked her for dessert recommendations too! Friendly welcoming and her knowledge of the menu was exactly what we needed! Thanks Lily, hope you are working next time we come back.

Just come back from Hickory's had a family meal with 3 daughters and granddaughter, place was very busy but staff great, Lilly was out main waitress and was brilliant, plus she has excellent recommendations, food came piping hot and plenty of it big portions, even went for dessert, (bring elesticated trousers) all in all really good family night out, highly recommended

Had a great experience at this place milkshakes were great, food was amazing (especially the coleslaw side). When it comes to busiest times, staff really persevere as much as possible to ensure tables are ready for peeps who have made reservations.

Had a great meal here in October 2023 with the family. Great food fast friendly service and a fantastic atmosphere with live music. The gravy that comes with the brisket is phenomenal great evening out. Highly recommended.

My recent visit to Hickory's in Poynton was quite disappointing. I opted for the 12oz 'Cowboy Steak' and was talked into the 'Steak and Shake' offer, which included a milkshake. However, the reality fell short of expectations — I received an extremely small steak that resembled more of a children's meal, paired with completely different accompaniments. What added to the frustration was that the waiter, when proposing the 'Steak and Shake' offer, failed to mention that the main meal would be different, or even that I could choose between an 8oz or 12oz steak as part of the deal, and I was served the 8oz option without being given a choice. Upon expressing my dissatisfaction to the manager, I encountered condescension and excuses. The manager suggested that the waiter was 'trying to do me a favour,' dismissing the fact that I wasn't informed about receiving a different main meal than what I had initially ordered. While they did refund the cost of the meal, it's disheartening to think that the staff might be under pressure to push certain deals, compromising the customer's experience. In summary, my experience at Hickory's was marred by a lack of transparency, poor communication, and a manager more interested in deflecting blame than addressing the issue at hand. It's disappointing when a restaurant fails to prioritise the needs of its customers, and I hope they take this feedback seriously for the sake of future diners.

Had a good meal good experience. This is the second time I've been here the first I was no so I'm pressed with ,but this time much much beter and well worth the 4 stars over all. Might have been time of day as this was late afternoon on a weekday.

Not many places like this and we happily drive 45 minutes here and will continue to do. The whole atmosphere is lovely, don’t need to dress up, just a cosy place with a brilliant vibe…the food is absolutely outstanding, we are big eaters and still leave food on our plates. Don’t be deceived by this being a chain, on our second visit we noticed they have a smoker on site for the meat so definitely not microwave meals like some!! The service tonight was brilliant, can not fault a single member of staff. Really amazing place, I hope they keep it going because it’s a rare gem!!

Great food. Excellent atmosphere. Free popcorn on entry and staff are friendly. American vibes are strong here and you should absolutely try one of the weekday specials. Very tasty. Not a cheap place to eat but certainly don't feel short changed as the BBQ flavours are delicious. Plenty of parking and disabled toilets on ground floor.

Came here for my daughter's birthday. Coincidentally also the Steak night deal 😊. 13 quid for a milkshake and an excellent quality steak. Our waiter @Joe made the evening extra special with his attentive service and a lovely touch of bringing us a birthday cake at the end. Thanks for a great evening.

This has to be the best chain restaurant around, love the meat platter and brisket. Can't beat a grape soda and the cherry vanilla soda! Even when it's busy, service is fast Drinking here is decent too, some decent IPA and pale ales, you can get them served in pitchers which is always fun Good array of cocktails and shots available

Went here for my son’s bday in the tram she’d got to set up nice and early and all the staff the lead up to communication was great and on the day staff helped us and we’re polite ! Food was good also Thank you !!!

Good food with a great selection. Always come out stuffed!! Fantastic for kids and families. Service is always spot on.....its quite expensive for what it is but it's always busy so they must be doing something right. Better than the Wilmslow one IMO.

I was really looking forward to this place as I hadn't been in years. We went for a relative's birthday celebrations. We ordered drinks and the staff had to ask after 10 minutes what they were so drinks took a while to come. The food came out in good time but unfortunately I had to return my child's meal as we found a long hair in it. This was quickly rectified and they didn't charge for the childrens meal so fair play. I found my meat was just very dry and didn't enjoy it as much as I'd like. It was quite warm in there too. Don't know if it was because they were really busy but it was not what I was expecting especially for the price you pay. In future we will try a different location but probably not for a while

Been hickory’s a few times in poynton , and it’s never disappointed , we went tonight table of 5, food was amazing, but I have to mention Lewis especially who was our waiter for the night, he’s so funny, always had a smile on his face, brought the banter to the table which we all loved, it was our dads birthday & before I asked how we go around sorting a cake & getting the staff to sing happy birthday… he had already sorted it! He really is an asset to hickory’s team!! So a special thank you to Lewis!

First and last time dining here Staff lovely I don't know what all the fuss is about. Food was horrible no taste and cold you can tell food was frozen and tasted like it was put in a microwave before serving, one member had ribs and they literally had to dig the meat from the bone, no way is it slow cooked for 8hrs or it would of just fallen off. By the disabled toilet there was a very strong odour of urine it was horrible. As for adding a tip already to your bill that is terrible, yes you don't have to pay it but surely this is wrong. Extremely overpriced for bland food. Sorry but not a place we will be returning.

We had a table booked for 7pm but weren't seated until 7.35pm. We were given a complimentary round of drinks which was nice but then service was slow and the food was okay. My Boyfriend recommends the platter for one, however I wasn't a fan of my mac and cheese. Didn't seem like good value for money. Good family environment

Staff are very friendly and helpful but food lacking

Hickory’s is a favourite in our family and we have never come away disappointed! Always great food and a great atmosphere and friendly attentive staff. We usually visit Poynton but this was our first time at Wilmslow and it was very much hit the mark, it’s nice to know you can get the same quality whichever branch you choose!

Absolutely best bbq food around

Great place and staff. Foods always nice. There's a 10% ( think its 10% ) tip added automatically on everyone's bill which I didn't notice first few times. £10+ for a tip was abit much. Felt slightly embarrassed asking to remove tip but staff was nice about it. Gave a tip but an affordable 1. Pop corn on arrival and free bottle of water as many as you wish. Ide return

Second visit 26/8/2023. After the great 5 star visit I would review this as a one star. Table booked four weeks in advance arrived to be told table wasn’t ready and to go to the bar for drinks, there were five in our party, we headed to the bar area. A member of staff was then coming and taking people to there tables, in what seemed like no order, after politely waiting for an acceptable time of 20 minutes, we were told our table was being cleaned. Another ten minutes and we were taken to at table which was cleaned and ready but for three. Moved to another table which could accommodate us. Seated at 6:35, now I wasnt clock watching but I expected to be at least seated and ordered by now. Ordered our food and the Smokey bourbon bacon bites had “run out” last Tuesday! Come on nearly a week later and not on the menu. Apart from this the rest of the food was “ok” nothing special. An honest and updated review. £170 for 5 people. Clearly in this occasion there were. Far too many people booked in for them to cope with. Food served on cracked wooden board, which I only noticed after eating.update after a call from the manager a week after the visit I was informed that after you arrive and get drinks from the bar no name is taken when you are taken from the bar area to your table, they just go off your description. An attempt of an apology as they were busy, poor service, not good value for money. Won’t be returning.

Myself and my family had a very disappointing experience all round. The service was non existent and constantly had to pull staff members over if you wanted anything, waited 15 minutes just to place a drinks order. Our food arrived and then 10 minutes later our children's food arrived. Some of the meat was unbelieveabley dry (paticually the ribs) although we had the sharing platter some of the elements were good like the sausage and pulled pork beans. If you are spending over £100 on a meal for your family you expect to each it in comfort however the temperature inside felt like it was over 30 degrees and there is no air conditioning. Everywhere you looked people were fanning themselves and sweating. I have been to this place on 2 other occasions and enjoyed it but today's visit was very poor so I don't what has changed but it wasn't enjoyable at all.

If you want to feel like a morbidly obese American you must come here! The cheesy pretzel starter was decent, but I could've lived without it. For main I had chicken and bacon on a waffle with maple syrup, which although it sounds like something Stevie Wonder may make by accident, actually tasted amazing. The wife had baby back ribs which were lovely too, the meat coming clean off the bone. For dessert we had honeycomb frozen custard which was a lot nicer than it sounds. If you do visit just remember to bring a bucket of insulin because you'll have diabetes by the end of the meal...but it'll be worth it.

Very average I expected much better overall considering the posh area and food prices. So it was personally my first time eating here along with my family (mother and 3 brothers) out for a special occasion I'd only heard positive reviews in the past by a couple of friends so I expected great things. Firstly on arrival there was a nice big car park with a few spaces left we arrived at peak time on a Saturday. We were asked if we had booked and were immediately seated at our table with no issues and left us with 1 little box of popcorn between a table of 4?, it took around 10 minutes to be asked what drinks we wanted by the waitress, this was not good as it was very hot inside of the restaurant and we were all thirsty. Then shortly after she took our meal orders which took around 20 minutes to arrive with I thought we'd reasonable as it was very busy. So I asked for a hot chicken wing starter (£8.75) to come out with our mains which it did but we're incredibly dry and overcooked, I ordered the 12oz cowboy steak (£25) which was cooked perfectly to rare but it was under seasoned unfortunately and a bit tough (perhaps because I'm used to ordering fillet) I think I would have been better ordering a burger, so it came with skin on fries which were tasty and an underwhelming pepper sauce which was too mild and creamy. I didn't want to be rude and ask other party members on the food but I did notice that my brother's meal the BBQ pulled pork (£17) was a very small portion indeed. My other family had another steak, chicken waffle and 1/2 chicken . We had to keep asking the waitress for drinks and steak knives but she did ask if the meals were ok we didn't complain about the dry chicken wings. So after mains we ordered a couple of desserts I had a Texas pie which was different to what I would usually order but was lovely and my brother ordered a sundae not sure of which one but it was a great size, we had to ask again for spoons. We asked for the bill approx (£160) and paid via card the waitress was rather miserable again and didn't even say goodbye to our table, my mum had cash tip in her hand which is standard for her but decided against it on this occasion due to the waitress with her head down just walking off such a shame. So I don't think I'll be returning again the food was just average and the the waitress we had didn't seem to care about her job.

Came here for a child free night with my wife and we had a great time :-) Staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive, the atmosphere was lovely with a live singer and we left full and happy. The food was incredible as always and a good range of drinks were available available too. All in all, a great date night thoroughly enjoyed and I look forward to returning again in the future.

So we thought it was an upmarket restaurant after someone with lots of money told us it was great. So we went for our anniversary. It is like an American bar/ diner. Bustling atmosphere , music, wide age range, and authentic America styling. Service was fantastic from start to finish. The food is BBQ style smoked meats. We had a platter shared for two, and it was really tasty, and there was plenty. So much we took some home and had it for lunch the following day. The staff made us an anniversary board with a couple of glasses of prosecco and desert as a surprise. The only negative thing was that the tip was set at 7.5% ......too little for such a service master class, so make sure you top it up. It is very recommendable if you like that style of food. There are not enough photos, so we will have to go back 😉

Feels like they’ve reduced the veggie options for mains, which is a shame. Service was brilliant as always, but Cobb salad, which was amazing when I’ve had it before, was smaller and not as good as previously. It was missing the avocado and when we mentioned we were brought guac, which doesn’t really work on a salad. Still a great place, just wish there was a veggie option that rivalled some of the bbq available - Homegrown Smoker is a restaurant in Portland for inspiration as it’s all vegan!

We took our baby daughter and had a great time. This is one of our favourite local restaurants and always have a great time when we go.

The place was recommended by a friend and made quite a good impression on my in-laws visiting from Switzerland. The food as well as the drinks where really nice.

Over priced. STEAK £25 you can pay less in a good restaurant

The service was quite slow. We had to book a table and even when we arrived 5 mins before our timeslot, we still had to wait half an hour to be seated, you would see plenty of people waiting to be served or waiting for the table to be cleared but staff chose to huddle together and have a lean and a chat with eachother. The food was delicious but the service lets them down

Very very nice food. The staff were so welcoming and friendly. They suprised my daughter with a birthday treat and sparkler. Honestly cannot recommend this place enough, 1000/10 definitely go if you have the chance 🙌🏼
