Hetty and Betty in Scarborough

We went for a light bite for lunch, well with the portions serviced, we did not need an evening meal. We had cheese on toast and a fish finger sandwich. Both servings were large, the fish finger was more a small portion of fish in a ciabatta, chips and salad, the cheese on toast has several types of cheese making it very tasty, salad and coleslaw. I could not finish the fish sandwich. Serviced with good ole Yorkshire tea, the best. And if you wish you can order off the dog menu to feed your furry friend while you eat, or share yours.

Lovely dog friendly cafe. Went in for breakfast which would have been good had it been hot when served. Had obviously been served up on cold plates, tea arrived luke warm. Overall not a good experience 😕 won't be going again.

We had a pensioners tea it was brilliant Fish was one of the best I have ever had .we also got a cream tea it was so lovely.

Lovely light lunch. Food was good quality and proportional. Enjoyed the fish sandwich which was full of flavour and lightly cooked. Would recommend 👌

Arrive and shown to our table great, placed our order great. We order an apple juice and cappuccino, full English and poached egg on toast. The apple juice was awful and must have been the cheapest of cheap at the wholesales. Everything on the breakfast was cold apart from the beans, the plates were stone cold, which made the food go cold quicker. The toast that accompanied the breakfast was freezing, I don’t even think the bacon had seen the pan! Overall the whole place was cold, do not go here!!

We booked an afternoon tea with family. We assumed we would be seated upstairs ( as pictured on the website and Facebook). We wasn’t! We walked in to a pushchair from the next table up against our table! They should have been told that the table was reserved. That table was extremely noisy with kids and a barking dog! A gentleman actually walked around from a table he was seated at to see where the chaos was coming from! So you can imagine what it was like for us! On a positive note cakes and scones were beautiful . Sandwiches ok , could do with something with them ie crisps, salad ( there were just rocket leaves under mine). We asked the two young lads who were serving about moving tables and they said upstairs was closed! If people book a nice afternoon tea more thought needs to be made about seating! It was chaotic where we were seated and not a nice experience.

Terrible. Queued to get in. Told last orders 1pm due to staff shortages. At 1255 told yes we could have a table but only tea or coffee available as kitchen closed.

A Huge Thank You to all at Hetty and Betty especially Lois for making our wedding day perfect! The venue is outstanding and was beautifully decorated to our choice, it was a Goth wedding so all black and purple. The food was fantastic and plentyof it. Lois was a wonderful host and everything went to plan!! We could not have asked for more. Highly Recommended!!

Pedido pescado con patatas fritas para 2 y un bollo de fruta con té. 1 porción de pescado con papas fritas llegó al puesto de pasteles con el bollo el pescado era acuoso y mush obviamente se descongeló y no seco se negó a pagar por el pescado, pero pagó por las papas fritas y el bollo y los tés. No volvería a lamentarlo.

Lois and her team at Hetty and Betty couldn’t have been more helpful and welcoming for our storytelling event! They made setting up and running the night an absolute pleasure. The Peacock Suite was a beautiful room and they adapted it to suit us perfectly. It became a stunning, bespoke space for our ghost stories by candlelight. Fantastic venue! - Edwyrdian Tales

Always a beautiful experience of perfect quality

A lovely little tea room that’s filled with happiness and cozy vibes. It’s a charming location where the staff are always welcoming and friendly. I came here with my family awaiting our house to be available and this was the perfect place to kill an hour. The decor really reflects the heritage of Whitby which stokes conversation and is aesthetically pleasing as you dine on some afternoon tea. The prices are good and I’d definitely recommend this place for most people who are looking to enjoy an atmosphere in warm company. Looking forward to my return visit for another scone!

Terrible staff. Turned away because i had three children. Was informed there weren't tables even as i was pointing out empty ones. Wasn't allowed to wait as it's apparently a first-come firs-serve basis. Terribly rude. Not likr it used to be.

Absolutely beautiful! The good was top notch. We had the afternoon tea - fish and chips, with a glass of prosecco. The food wasn't greasy, the batter was light and crispy. There were enough chips for us personally. The scones were delicious - you can take these away if you'd like. The menu and other offers sound fantastic. Service was great and attended to you quickly. Can see how this place gets busy and recommended. I suggest booking though just to avoid disappointment, but they fo accept walk ins if they've the room at that time. Worth the money. Will most definitely be returning

Lovely setting with excellent food. Had the fish and chip afternoon tea which was absolutely fab-u-lous. This is a dog friendly cafe which is great for dog owners but for those of us that aren’t they could think of having a ‘dog area’. Personally I don’t want to have to watch the table next to us feeding their dog from the table. Nor do I want to see dog owners cuddling their dogs sat at the table.

I pre booked the Fish & Chip afternoon tea as a surprise for my partner. I requested a nice table with a view and that's what I got! The food was lovely, staff pleasant and we had a table by the window with a view of the harbour. Would definitely recommend

We called in here on Friday morning, having been in Whitby since Monday. It was our last day and we decided to have breakfast before we went for our train. I had a small full English and my partner had beans on toast. The food was lovely! Cooked to perfection and tasty. The toast was really nice too, as was the pot of tea. Service was spot on and the cafe itself was clean and nicely set out. If we'd known about this place we would have been coming in all week and I would like to have tried the fish and chips. The only negative thing I would say is I wouldn't have dogs in, but since every other person in Whitby seems to have a dog with them, I realise this would not go down well. Thanks again and we hope to return soon.

A warm greeting for our arrival for us and our dog. The 2 young men serving knew their stuff and obviously worked well together. Quiet music with a little dancing from one (I’m not sure he knew he was having a little jig; just enjoying the music). The service had had a quiet quality throughout, nothing over the top. Dog friendly, plenty of dog guests nicely spread through the cafe, in case of any crossed barking (there wasn’t), this showed experience of running a dog friendly cafe. The menu is understated, a simple list, nothing over the top. We both ordered sandwiches, I switched mine to a toastie. A half portion of chips was a good size, crispy on the outside and soft inside. Good quality food, the included coleslaw was lovely. £18 for 2 sandwiches, 1/2 chips and 2 teas. Other tables hot plate food looked good and plentiful. Compliments to the chef. Perhaps a direction sign to show the second toilet location would be of help. Overall well done to all.

Popped in for breakfast, my wife had perfectly poached eggs on toast, I had bacon, sausage and egg on toasted ciabatta, excellent quality and both really enjoyed our food. Staff were friendly. Highly recommended

We went to Hetty and Betty's with our dog. Had a lovely fish tea with scones with cream and jam at a fantastic price. Our dog was warmly welcomed unlike some of the other more famous fish and chips restaurants in Whitby. Highly recommended especially if you have dog.👍

The food was very good and reasonably priced. However the toilets require an urgent deep clean.

My and my wife have been coming here for a while now and have always found it to be nothing short of exceptional. The staff are all lovely and welcoming, the food is excellent, cannot recomment enough We were also lucky enough to have gotten married here this past August. Right from the beginning Lois and Lisa were incredibly helpful, communicative and overall excellent. We had the most amazing wedding and could not have asked for a more special day so tailored to exactly what we wanted. It's without a doubt the best wedding venue in Whitby, no hidden charges, no addons that will bankrupt you and an excellent team of staff that work tirelessly to make your day special

We were recommended to try Hetty and Betty a year ago and now we eat here on every visit to Whitby as its a little gem of a place. The afternoon fish and chips are beautiful and so filling that I always end up taking my scone home. Staff very attentive amd always checking in to make sure everything is ok, Will Definitely be back next year. 🩷

Having visited a few times whilst on holiday in the last couple of years, this place never fails to impress. Great service/ staff, lovely clean premises, excellent food and nothing too much trouble when you ask a question.

The food was really nice, we all had fish and chips and I must say it's the first time I've eaten fish and chips and it's not repeated on me. I suffer from really bad acid reflux so for me the food was a win! Unfortunately I couldn't have a drink with my meal. Really wanted a cup of tea to be told we only have full fat milk or soya, neither of which I can drink. Also maybe you should think about having a separate area for those who wish to bring their dogs. Wet stinking dog fur when I'm eating is not nice 👍🏻 Also some people have allergies or are scared of them.

If you are looking for great food and great service pay this place a visit as it’s a wonderful restaurant in Whitby! Had a large breakfast with two of most items and drinks. The food was lovely and well presented with great service from staff. Please keep this up will definitely be going back 😀

One off the best little tea shop in whitby and surrounding area well worth a visit the staff are very pleasant and helpful food at a great price for the amount you get on you plate

Was ok but staff did not seem botherd no atmosphere cream tea was ok but cobwebs around light fitting deffo needs cleaning

The male staff were responsive and attentive. The fish and chips afternoon tea was rather unique! Gluten free option for excellent.

The fish and chips we ordered were terrible. The fish was obviously freshly cooked, but had not been drained of the oil, it was just placed on top of the chips and was just a greasy mess. The fish itself was tasteless and watery. We did arrive shortly before closing time but none the less we expected better. Needless to say won’t be going back.

What a fabulous Whitby Afternoon Fish and Chip tea, with deliciously battered fish, lovely tasting tartare sauce, chips, mushy or garden peas and bread and butter. Topped off with a jam and cream fruit scone that we brought home as we were replete! A true gem of a place, looking out onto the harbour, enjoying the sunshine and Whitby ambience. The staff were fabulous, courteous and nothing was too much trouble for them.....thank you, you were all a credit to the service industry. Fish and chips would have been fine, but the side salad was sad… how can they serve so much wilted leaves? Staff very disinterested.

Being coeliac I chose the egg mayo sandeich which came with salad and coleslaw, and was absolutely delicious, Thsnk you.

Hetty and Betty's, a secret that has now been revealed. Recently awarded for its service and food, especially the Fish and Chips High Tea, must now be eligible for an award for the great view from the back of the restaurant looking over the quayside and river up to the Eastside and Abbey. I would recommend anyone with a desire to eat good food and enjoys good service to visit, Hetty and Betty's.

Just gad chips fish and mushy peas at hetty and Betty,s in whitby absolutely awful the chips were well over done the mushy peas cold and the batter on the fish was not crispy at all the lad thar served us looked like he did not want to be there his people skills were none existing brought our food and just dumped it on the table without even asking which we had ordered and when we complained about the food was told they would inform the chef if they are promoting whitby fish and chips it is god help whitby

Absolutely gorgeous fish & chips. We both really enjoyed our meal. Great value at £13.50 each for a treat on holiday.

We have 3 dogs and the staff were so accommodating for the 3 of them to lay down, staff lovely drinks were great too

What a smashing hidden gem, found by accident. Nothing was too much. My grandaughter asked if she could have her sausage battered. Of course said the waitress. The adults ordered afternoon tea which included fish, home made chips, tartare sauce, mushy peas, bread and butter, scones, clotted cream and jam, and a pot of tea. Wow, what an amazing feast and all for £36 gor 2. A request was made if it was possible to have an afternoon tea for one. Yes, of course. The fish was the best that I've eaten for years, as were the homemade chips. You don't get served these any more. I cannot recommend this restaurant any more highly. You will not be dissapointed.

A lovely meal which we both enjoyed, the fish and chips with curry sauce was faultless, the only negative is the staff should ask you where you would prefer to sit, we were placed in the darkest area next to the counter, was that to save them having to walk too far I wonder? It was far sunnier and bright out the back and we were the only customers at the time.

We have been here a few times and we have never had a bad time, we have even recommended it yo our friends and they love it. Their afternoon tea with fish n chips instead of the sandwiches is great we love it, the food is great the staff are lovely we can't fault it at all.

Absolutely loved the the fish and chips afternoon tea with all the trimmings. They even had a vegetarian option of fried brie instead of fish which my other half thoroughly enjoyed. Decent sized portions. It was cooked perfectly and the scone was absolutely delicious! Highly recommend, what a treat. Place is also dog friendly. Thanks.

Absolutely excellent. Dog friendly which was much needed after a very cold walk at Runswick for our older dog who needed a rest. Husbands full English looked beautiful, very good size for the "Large" breakfast. However highly highly recommend their homemade scones. Holy moly, the nicest scone I've had in a loooonng time. Absolute top tier. Not sure if they're always served warm or our timing was impeccable but the warmth of the fresh bake just made it exquisite. Fairly priced too. Staff were all lovely. Will definitely come again when we next come to whitby.

Visited for the first time today looking for somewhere indoors that was dog friendly that was spacious enough for a push chair too. This one couldn’t have ticket the box any better! From the street you could walk past it a little unnoticed but what a gem - from the moment we removed the staff could not have been more helpful. Lovely atmosphere, prompt service, and most importantly fantastic fish and chips! The afternoon tea version is a great novelty. Will be back again!

A perfect place for a brunch. Loved the food - toasted teacakes and the vegetarian and full English breakfast were delicious. Service was absolutely brilliant. Especially the manager who was extremely attentive and welcoming. Definitely recommend if you’re in the area!

We got there as it opened, the service was amazing we were seated and then given time to make our choices. The food came out in a very timely manner, we all order something different and it was all delicious. The decor was lovely and the place was very clean. We would go back in a heartbeat!!

Tried this place as the one we were going to advertised dog friendly but wasn't. We had the fish and chips afternoon tea. Two good portions of fish with ample chips mushy peas and tartare sauce. Bread and butter and a gorgeous scone with jam and clotted cream. Fantastic. We had a lot of tea for two,which was replenished free of charge. Don't get down to Whitby very often, but wouldn't go anywhere else. Staff, although busy were very friendly.

The service was good. The small fish bites and chips were big, I’m glad I went for the kids portion, I bet the adults portion was big! But the kids portion was plenty for me.

We called in here Sunday Feb 4th lunch pretty quiet but still it took 15 minutes to have our order taken drinks duly arrived but it took so long for food to arrive we had finished off the tea 25 minutes for cheese on toast really? Food bland sadly would not recommend or return shame really 😞

Great food, brilliant service from all the staff. Started with a friendly welcome, quick and attentive service, great seats overlooking the harbour and good value prices. Ended with our dog being given a new bowl because we’d managed to lose his!!

We have only just started visiting Whitby and we chose here for breakfast, as soon as I walked in I was met at the door by a lovely women and after a nice chat with her I did actually find out she was the manager. I came originally for breakfast, the large breakfast was beautiful and well priced. The coffee me and my other half had was the best coffee I’ve had in a while. We enjoyed our food so much we returned later on for our dinner. The fish and chips were also lovely! The fish cooked perfectly and the chips were amazing. We will be returning to Whitby and 100% be returning here.

We visited the cafe for lunch and the food was poor. We ordered fish and chips. On arrival, the chips were burnt, the fish was covered in oil and it was disgusting. The prices were ridiculous. The chef was stood in the cafe area having a social conversations with the staff. This looked so unhygienic considering he was in his kitchen chef whites and hair net. This put me and my partner off. It’s such a shame because the place could potentially be a great little cafe. We would definitely not recommend this place for anyone wanting something to eat.

We called in for a quick bite to eat to get out of the rain. The young man who greeted us was pleasant. We had a push chair, and he showed us to a table and asked if we would like a highchair. He took our orders , and the drinks arrived about 15 minutes before the food was not good for hot drinks. I, along with my son, ordered soup with a cold sandwich from the menu. When it arrived, the soup was spilt over the dish. It was lukewarm, and had sour taste, the cheese and onion sandwich was a child size , grated cheese, lots of it spilling over the plate. The Latte coffee ordered was poor. All in all, it was not a good experience. We shall not be returning and stick to a cafe we know and like in Whitby .

My partner and I both ordered full English breakfasts and a hot drink. Unfortunately both breakfasts were overcooked, including the bacon, sausage and egg. What made it worse was the fact that we were given a blunt knife to try and cut into it. Staff were very friendly and efficient, but we didn’t want to offend them with the truth. You’ll find plenty of other dog friendly cafes on the other side of the river.

Only stopped off one wet and cold November afternoon for a coffee and teacake. Such a warm, dog friendly welcome. The staff were friendly, the coffees excellent and the toasted teacakes and jam the best I've tasted in a long time. Its a shame I'd had lunch earlier as their fish and chips looked gorgeous!

Hi visited this little gem today, at 11.00am really helpful staff as they were just changing over from breakfast and we wanted lunch, a very wet day made more pleasant, great food, nothing was too much trouble for them, a jewel in Whitby’s crown wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to family & friends x

Popped into Hetty And Betty for a late breakfast during Goth Weekend.. Ordered a small full English breakfast which was absolutely gorgeous cooked to perfection best I've had in a long time... Definitely returning next time in Whitby 🤗

Lovely cafe, with really friendly and attentive service. We enjoyed the Gothic Afternoon Tea (it's Whitby, in October, it has to be done). Really good choice of sandwiches, the cakes were lovely (the lemon drizzle in particular). Oh my Goodness, the scones were the best I've had. All washed down with a bottle of Whitby Whaler beer for me, and a Prince of Darkness Whitby Gin and tonic for my better half. Great atmosphere, great food and lovely staff. Thank you.
