Great sandwiches, especially the posh fish finger sandwich. great service. Festive lunch in lovely surroundings. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Check in was easy. Room very comfortable and clean. Breakfast choice for continental and cooked was plentiful. Nicely presented and cooked breakfast was piping hot. Menu generally was very extensive and service great at dvening meal. A great selection of beers, wine and spirits too. Staff very attentive.

We’ve be coming to this place since it opened. 06/12/24 we had a family meal that we had been looking forward to. The place was packed out with a lovely atmosphere. The starters came & were the best we have had for a long time, then the main courses came out & they were absolutely delicious, The deserts were to die for. This is the best family meal we have had for a long time. We will be booking more meals at the Penny hedge. Compliments to the kitchen staff,head chef & the bar staff for an excellent experience with really good food. Well done Marstons for getting your act into gear. We will be back

New management, new head chef. Best meal we have ever had in Penny Hedge & we go regularly. Home made Yorkshire pudding. All veg fresh. It really was an excellent meal last night.

Gorgeous little place, first time visiting and we were made to feel really welcome by the lady manager think her name was Debbie, food was really good and it was warm inside the pub which was perfect as we were freezing. Looking to spend a night there soon. Thank you 🙂

I was very disappointed with my meal. I had fish and chips. I sent the meal back as the fish I had was that thin it was stuck to the batter so was unable to eat. I did get another fish which was slightly better. I was there on the 8th October and the fish was lovely really big chunks. Myself and family regularly use the Penny Hedge but this time it wasn’t your usual high standard. ER

Just had a two night stay with my good lady we enjoyed two evening meals and thought everything was absolutely lovely. Happy staff and that made a difference genuinely cheerful people.

Fantastic food and service. Nothing was to much for the staff. Very welcoming, friendly and prompt. Very good atmosphere, clean and tidy pub. A wide variety of food and Ale to suit all the family.

Granted we hadn’t booked a table, however it wasn’t busy when we arrived as a family of 4, were showed to a table that had been reserved but told it was ok as it was a “no show” We were asked within 2 mins if we were ready to order (we weren’t, hadn’t even had chance to decide) but did order drinks But unfortunately they forgot all about us and after 15 mins I went and asked at the bar for our drinks to be told there wasn’t an order - they managed to bring them over without me reordering The red haired waitress was more interested in waffing with her hair, twisting her nose ring and sitting down and popping outside for a vape / cigarette After which she didn’t wash or sanitised her hands before serving her friends that came in and also serving food from the kitchen Food was ok, no spoon for my soup Not enough knifes and forks for our main food we rectified the mistaken order and missing items Unfortunately due to the poor service I can’t recommend here What a shame

The room was clean and well-furnished. Evening meal and breakfast were value for money and extremely well-presented. All staff were polite and helpful throughout our stay.

I’ve been staying here the last couple weeks with work & I have received nothing but 5* customer service. I’d like to give a special mention to Kirsty, she’s been & absolute star. She never seems to stop working & greets everyone with a warm welcome whilst maintaining great customer service. Thank you.

We stayed at the hotel due to a family funeral. The kindness, excellent service, the pub staff showed us was second to none. We had food throughout the day and nothing was too much trouble for them. We made to feel so welcome. 100% would recommend.

Arrived to a half empty restaurant to be told they don’t do walk ins - had we been stopping at the hotel though it would’ve been fine it seemed.

A very quiet Monday night at 7pm. Loads of space on the car park and and lots of tables available. I asked for a table of 4 and they said they weren't accepting walk ins. Asked if I was staying at the hotel, I said no. They said sorry we aren't accepting walk ins. The place was so quiet I could see so many available tables and loads of space on cat park. They will be out of business before long.

What an awful place. Staff were ignoring us and just stood around talking. The food was cold bland and boring. One member of staff was too busy serving a customer ( boyfriend)? Free beer. 4 pints in total it was some bloke in orange high viz jacket and pants

In the past we have always been very happy with the penny hedge and have left good reviews. It was good quality and friendly and felt like a local rather than a faceless chain. However, our last 2 visits have changed our opinion. The old staff have all gone and they seem to have new staff. They are not as friendly and one seemed borderline miserable to be there. On the previous visit they didn’t have what I wanted which on its own didn’t bother me but my husband always has steak (medium to well done). The steak arrived and it was more like rare. Nobody came to ask us how the meal was and there seemed to be very little staff to do so. So he ate the steak but left some to show the waitress to which she replied well we can’t refund it if you’ve eaten it. We were not after a refund as yes he did eat it but we just wanted to give some feedback. On the second visit he had steak again (again nobody asked if the meal was ok) but this time the steak was more a lump of fat - over half the steak was fat. When the waiter came to collect our plates we told him and he said he would tell the chef. We had to ask what the chef said and apparently oh yeah we’ve had a few back tonight!!!!!! Overall the place seems to have gone downhill and we will be looking to find somewhere else next time. It’s a shame because previously it has been brilliant. If this had been 1 visit I would have said it was just a one off but because it seemed just as bad the second time unfortunately we will not be coming back.

A lovely lunch here again today. The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive. Plenty of choice even though my daughter and I are vegan. The food is always fresh and well presented. We can say without hesitation that the staff seem to go that extra mile to ensure visitors to the restaurant are made to feel welcome.

Steak was all fat and not cooked same through. Mentioned to staff and they went no steak expert no apologies and the friendliness of staff is non existent waited for over half hour for bad food. Had good poisoning from this meal. The server said didn't have a drink ordered even though can see it in the bar fridge

La comida era horrible el filete estaba lleno de grasa y arenoso. No se cocinó uniformemente raro / azul en un extremo bien en el otro. El personal tenía la actitud de no dar una. Le dijo al servidor que ella respondió bien que diferentes cortes de filete por lo que ningún Especialista. El personal nunca sonrió. La comida estaba fría y repugnante.

Después de una noche muy buena decidimos comer allí de nuevo. Nuestra comida principal fue buena, tuve el pastel de pollo y puerro que estaba sabroso, pero una extraña combinación de una salsa blanca en el pastel y una salsa de carne, sin embargo, me gustó. Me hubiera gustado un desierto pero la camarera desapareció y después de una espera bastante larga decidimos no molestar. Con todo, bastante decepcionante. En un momento dado solo había una camarera que se salió corriendo.

Absolutely lovely place, staff are very friendly and helpful, the food was delicious, there is even a doggie bar where you can help yourself to treats,water,and even a blanket. We were in a motorhome and only paid a donation to charity which is a lovely thing to do. I will definitely come back and would highly recommend it.

Another visit to one of our favourite places to stay, staff are always beyond helpful, we're always made to feel welcome, and the food is always great.

Visited for evening meal. First down side, no diet drinks available of any kind as they had an issue with the drink dispenser, plus only had Merlot wine and no Malbec. The service was excellent throughout and all are a credit to the organisation. Jason, although a young man seemed to be running things and made himself available when required. The food ordered was hot and tasty. Personally I had the lasagne with garlic bread and salad. The salad lacked a bit as it was just lettuce, no tomato, cucumber onion etc which is mainly why this is a 4 star rather than 5 star review. It wouldn't put me off visiting again as the place is clean and the food well presented. It is however a big dining area and on a wet Tuesday night not many customers are there.

Pedido cóctel de gambas. Antes era lo mejor, ahora las gambas reales reemplazadas por camarones congelados que eran como cartón para masticar. Las papas fritas Haloumi estaban frías y el glaseado de mayo había florecido y estaba apagado, se mantuvo durante siglos. Los pollos tiernos eran duros y tenían huesos.

We are local so don’t stay. We visit this pub/restaurant frequently and have rarely been disappointed. The service and food are excellent and at a reasonable price. The wine isn’t overpriced and a good choice available. Glenn and his staff are outstanding. So good that we are booked for dinner again tonight! Alison & Pete Thomson

We have been coming here since it opened, The lunch we had today was poor quality & the service was basic. The prawns in the prawn cocktails were frozen, the haloumi fries were stone cold & the chicken tenders had bones in. Front of house staff tried their best but the food quality really needs looking at. Price have gone up but the food quality has took a nose dive.

Lovely little find , we all met for a family wedding in Whitby. Lost was comfortable. Went to the penny Hedge for evening meal it was very nice, not too busy but we all were seated together. Would definitely recommend.😊

There is a lovely buzz about The Penny Hedge and I reckon that their Sunday Lunch is one of the best in the Whitby area. I am also well pleased that they stock Guinness 0% as |I hate to drink and drive and live in Robin Hood's Bay and travel to The Penny Hedge by car

Arrived late after a long drive. I suffer with PTSD and having to enter the bar of the pub to check in threw me somewhat but the man on check-in was super understanding and patient with me. We had booked twin room via a booking agent but it cake through as a double room and we had a double room. I rang to the bar and explained why I couldn't cope with a double room etc and the man said he would phone me back in 5 minutes after checking the available rooms out. He also said he would help with cases as we were up a flight if stairs, there is no lift and I had a weighted blanket in the case. He ph9ned back as promised and offered us a twin room by the door but he knew this would probably be too noisy for me and offered us a double room each as an alternative as there was an empty double room. He quickly.got us sorted and helped with cases and a comfortable nights sleep was had. Thank you for going above and beyond to support me with my disability when I was panicking and providing a solution for us. It was unexpected and was extremely helpful and understabding of you. Wish more people were like you. Thank you

Such a warm & friendly pub, we visited here with family for lunch whilst on holiday in Whitby. The fish & chips was delicious and the kids really enjoyed the sausage & mash. A must visit in your in the area!

Stayed for 1 night. Accommodation was Average, clean but some road noise close by. Had food and drinks on arrival, again Average. However, when booking we felt it was indicated that Breakfast WAS part of the price... It isn't .. and is extra if you eat, which is Approximately £9 each for the Full English.. Service was also rather slow. Nearly 20 mins from ordering to Breakfast arriving, but only 7 people in the restaurant at that time. Could do far better with the service.

This pub has an incredible menu! The steak and ale pie was cooked to perfection, and the beer selection was impressive. Friendly service and a cozy atmosphere. Will definitely be back

No staff.couldnt even book us into accommodation. Kitchen closed early .no staff.had to cancel 3 night stay.

Waited 40 minutes after we had arrived, we saw nobody, ie no drinks, no nothing. The excuse short of staff.. NEVER again.

Called in on the off chance of a meal. Was told by some spotty erk bookings only. And where only taking bookings from a hotel across the road. Very off putting to visitors. I shall make sure Marstons know about it ,and everyone I meet. Really good start to a week's break. Thanks sarcastically.

Was here for a few nights on Business. They really look after you here. The food and beer are good. I will definitely use this wee Inn when I'm back in the area. They even had a wee Laphroaig for us behind the bar 🥃 😀😀😀

Good service for meal but staff never came to clear our plates after meal , and had to search for someone to pay our bill.

With the gas not working at the penny hedge, and serving a limited menu. Me and my family still had a great meal time.

Friendly staff. Clean rooms. Comfortable bed. Clean bathroom with a bath. Pub is really welcoming. Nothing to fault really. Would definitely stay here again.

Phil the manager was working front of house when we arrived, To say he was arrogant & very unhelpful would be an understatement, our party was made to feel very unwelcome by him and that we where a hinderance to his day, on a plus side, 3 different colleagues served us food and drinks and where extremely helpful and friendly, maybe Phil should take a leaf out of their book in customer service, Our party are staying nearby and would have been repeat visitors every evening should Phil not made such an unwelcome atmosphere during our visit. It was obvious that our presence was not welcome this day with Phil even going so far as to say to our waitress - tell them that there are no Sunday dinners left when tables arriving after us where able to order these, Phil proceeded to be the most friendliest guy ever to other tables of local people making us feel even more unwelcome, Once we had ate & some of our party went to the bar to pay our bill, Phil quickly scurried away so that he did not need to interact with us again. I feel that I need to point out that at no point of our visit where any of our party rude or disrespectful to the manager so we where quite taken back by how we where being spoken to and treat. We visit the area after and this is the first time that we have ever had any issues at this establishment. I do hope that Phil seaks help with his attitude, arrogance, rudeness and general behaviours towards paying guests!

Clean large rooms with air con. Bar lovely and modern. Food good. Plenty of parking. Close enough to whitby for a nice 20 min down hill stroll.

Arrived this evening to a half empty restaurant. Was told they were unable to give us a table as they had to keep tables free for hotel guests and they were short of staff. What a joke. So much for northern hospitality! Will never be returning. Never heard anything so ridiculous in my whole life.

Very welcoming pub/restaurant.Close to Whitby. We stayed in the car park in a campervan the staff allows overnight stay with a choice of breakfast which is very good. The evening meals are excellent too. The establishment only allows two campervans a night with a small charge going to charity. Well worth staying for a visit and looking around Whitby .

We had a great time as a family at Penny Hedge. The place was clean, fresh, welcoming and relaxing. My children loved everything about it and wouldn’t stop talking about their experience. The rooms were spacious and fresh, and the food at the restaurant was great. Thank you for making our visit to Whitby a great experience.

Was our 4th time stopping here had 4 nights here and ate here every night, food is bang on from breakfast to eating at night, rooms clean and comfortable, staff really good always helpful,polite and couldn't do enough for us!! Will be stopping again at some point!!!

The staff were lovely. The room was very clean and tidy. Everything was easy accessible. Check in and out was easy. Breakfast was good value for money.

Lovely meal. All of the family really enjoyed it and Suzanne our server was excellent. Her customer service was second to none and we'll definitely be returning to The Penny Hedge.

Excellent stay in hotel, large car park, very clean, very quiet and staff very welcoming. Meals we had breakfast every morning. Was superb, you choose from menu. Evening meals and drinks Excellent. Half an hour walk into whitby, but buses available just outside hotel. Would definitely stay again.

Del extenso menú elegí bistec y pastel de cerveza solo para que me dijeran que como AYER era pastel y pinta noche no les quedaba nada! Elegí pollo y champiñones junto con puré cremoso de zanahorias de guisantes y sarna tout, la sarna tout apenas estaba cocida, el puré cremoso estaba pegado al plato y seco y el pastel era bastante agradable, pero parecía que fatima whitbread lo había lanzado en el plato durante un intento de récord mundial, los aros de cebolla se quemaron y mis compañeros cazadores pollo estaba seco y exagerado, siendo camionero comí comidas de todos los estándares de restaurantes, pero aunque un buen lugar y el personal era amable la comida fue una gran decepción.

Very nice experience from start to finish. Was informed straight away that there is a little wait for food, got drinks very quickly and ordered food quickly. The lady’s serving us were all very friendly and polite. The food was not too much of a wait to be honest. Overall it was a very good experience with lovely food and drinks. See you again!

Very friendly helpful staff, we felt very relaxed, lots of restaurants tend to expect you to be gone within an hour to free up the table, but no rush at all. Food was perfect, we all enjoyed it.

Came 30 mins early and was told was going to set up birthday banner for hubby but hadn’t had chance which is fair enough! Served by young lad with long hair, terrible customer service. Asked for limoncello spritz and hadn’t even finished saying it and he blasted out Got None!! Took our food order and I asked for the sticky chicken, again shouted out Got None, I was quite taken aback as you would of thought he would of said, I’m sorry we’ve got none. Food and drinks were ok, apart from Pepsi max came with ice and we’d asked for it without but wasn’t a problem. Wasn’t the best experience for a birthday and we were glad to get out if I’m being honest. Their response stated to email them direct but all I get is a mail server error so can’t contact them!!

Went at 9:15 for breakfast (empty in the restaurant)and got told we couldn’t eat there because we wasn’t residence at the hotel. Thus we had to go somewhere else which totally ruined our plan. What is annoying is that it said we didn’t need to book or didn’t need to be in the hotel on the website.

The location and the staff was good and welcoming. The food on the other hand was not the best. We all had sandwiches. They were a bit dry, and the blt chicken had some burned bits. The side salad was nothing more than some salad leaves with dressing.

Basic food but cooked well, drinks a bit expensive, 2 staff had not turned in for their shift so the 2 who were working did very well to keep up with the demand.

Good service, Sueanne is a very friendly server and checked we had everything we needed. very nice food, the Roast dinner is enormous and very tasty.

Had hunters chicken. Chicken was tough and not really much taste apart from the sauce .I told the waitress who said she would speak to the kitchen but unfortunately no feed back. Was there last year and foid was amazing. Sadly no this time .

What an absolute gem, well worth the visit. Place is so clean, beds were very comfortable. Breakfast was delicious, the service was excellent. Well worth a stop. If I had any negatives, it'd be that the bathroom needs a fan. The steam is causing some mold on the ceiling and an extraction fan would certainly help this. Also, was told that bar closed at 11pm but after dropping bags in room & coming back just before 10pm, the coffee machine had been cleaned and I couldn't have my drink. Had I known, I'd have stayed in the room.
