Have been here several times over tge years and always very good. Now changing management and food and service have gone down hill somewhat

Food was reasonable, could have been warmer. Place was almost empty at 1.30pm on a Sunday!

Staff are really welcoming, brilliant service! Breakfast was lovely, and was quick to arrive. Full English and help yourself to continental, toast, croissants, tea, coffee, juice etc! Full to the brim and ready for another beautiful day! Will definitely be back! :)

A very warm welcome to the 3 of us and our dog. The service was excellent and our dog was fussed up so much by the staff. He was made comfortable with a blanket on the floor and fresh water was brought to him. The food was delicious. The 3 of us all had different mains but we all thoroughly enjoyed it.

We stayed 2 nights on a tour through England. We were kindly received for a very smooth check-in. The rooms were as expected and neat. We had dinner without a reservation while they were actually already full and were helped very kindly despite the crowds and got delicious food. At breakfast there was more than enough choice and in the mornings we were also treated very kindly. Check-out was super fast.

A lovely stay at The Penny Hedge. The manager went out of her way to help us. Great accommodation, especially for a wheelchair user. Great rooms, good food and lovely atmosphere in the pub.

A really lovely place for evening meal and breakfast on a recent work trip to Whitby. Staff were very helpful in the bar checking us in and made us feel very welcome and food was lovely.

Friendly staff, they were very attentive and helpful. The food was delicious.

The room smelt really musty on arrival, the bath had hairs in it. Only two mugs provided for four people! And a real poor selection of coffee tea and barely any sugar. The fan in bathroom didn't seem to work and the Aircon sounded like it had an electrical problem. The electric also kept turning off. Rooms are dated and tired. The pub also requires massive improvement with a lack staff and poor food, the breakfast ordered was barely warm and hardly any continental options it wasn't getting restocked regularly due to lack of staff and we all wanted to order a roast on Easter Sunday But it was unavailable Infact we couldn't even find anything available we wanted to eat. We were seated at 7pm and were still waiting for someone to come and take an order at 7:30, when none of our options were available on the app and no staff around to talk to we left and packed up from the hotel too. We didn't stay our second night because everything was unacceptable and such a disappointment. To top it off on our six hour journey home I became ill with a stomach bug.

Stayed in Whitby last week, it’s not FREE, but a £15 charity donation to stay at The Penny Hedge. Good level car park in nice location with plenty of spaces, just outside of Whitby centre with access wide variety of shops nearby including Sainsbury’s and B&M. The real BONUS is 20% off food when stopping over at The Penny Hedge. We had breakfast, 2 x Full English, which was a decent portion, nice ingredients and well cooked. Plus hot drinks, juice & continental selection included for around £16. Served by Karl, he was great, really welcoming & friendly making time to chat about our travels, as he did with all customers. He even sorted us a few complimentary extras for our travels inc. boxed cereal’s and fresh pastries. Highly recommend if in Whitby.

Perfect for chilled outings with our dog and 2 year old. Relaxed and very dog and baby friendly with kids activities outdoor play area and dog snacks and water bowls. Food is fantastic with a varied menu. All staff are lovely. Breakfast is great and such good value. Manager Debbie very friendly and accommodating. Our new favourite place for a stress free meals out away from the centre of Whitby. Thank you!

We took our grandchildren away for a few days & from start to finish all the staff were fabulous, nothing was too much trouble. They are a fantastic team of people, very friendly & helpful. Would definitely stay again.

The breakfast was excellent. We were well looked after by everyone it's a really friendly place. We didn't book but they did manage to fit us in we were not disappointed

Wow this place has massively gone down hill. Poor food and poor service. 'Lamb rump' wasn't even rump, was a couple of pieces of lamb steak about 40% of which was fat. The mini lamb and mint pie that it came with had never come close to anything resembling mint. Fish and chips, note, CHIPS, which per the menu were triple cooked chucky chips, were actually fries with a scabby broken fish. Nobody at any point came to check on our meals and even when the woman came to clear the plates (based on her prior interaction with the neighbouring table I would believe she was the manager) she never once asked about the food instead deciding to stand and just listen to our conversation. We used to visit this place often as the food was always reliably good pub food, never again. The worst dining experience I have had.

Hemos venido a Whitby dos veces al año durante los últimos 5 años. Durante cada festividad que siempre comíamos en uno de nuestros pubs favoritos, el Penny Hedge, nuestra última visita fue en noviembre, cuando todo fue genial. Sin embargo, visitamos esta semana, ya que hemos estado en Whitby de nuevo, y nos decepcionó con los cambios. La comida no parece la mitad de agradable y algunos empleados parecen malhumorados y son groseros. Una señora recogió nuestros platos vacíos y parecía que éramos un gran inconveniente para ella, haciéndonos sentir un poco incómodos. La misma señora apareció con mis hijas pudin, se paró al final de la mesa y dijo groseramente: "¿Quién ordenó esto? " Antes de tirar el pudín delante de mi hija y alejarse. También nos sirvieron cerveza plana en 2 ocasiones y tuvimos que pedir una bebida fresca. En general, decepcionante para nosotros y no volveremos. También tratamos de reservar una mesa específica, pero no pudimos ya que no se puede hablar con nadie por teléfono, al final mi marido terminó viajando para reservar en persona, muy molesto.

After ordering ice cream and waiting 25 minutes in an empty pub, we were told they didn't have the flavour we ordered. The bar service was fine but food is a challenge here.

Personalmente me pareció que el personal que me atendió fue bastante grosero o eran las 9 de la noche, solo queríamos una bebida, el pub estaba vacío en un 80% lo que para un viernes por la noche me parece un poco inusual, pero esta era la primera vez en este establecimiento. Pero divago que mi pareja fue a buscar un asiento mientras yo compraba las bebidas solo para que nos dijeran que no podíamos sentarnos en los asientos elegidos porque no estábamos comiendo. Lo siento, soy yo siendo un poco exigente, pero me sentí como cuando a los fumadores se les dijo que no podían sentarse allí porque eres un fumador que finalmente terminó fuera, ¿es así como ninguno de los comensales están siendo tratados?

Vino hoy por comida y pocas bebidas con pocos amigos y no podía faltar al servicio, dos señoras detrás de la barra, eran muy habladoras y educadas. Siempre es bueno entrar en un pub con personal hablador que te hacen sentir bienvenido! El entrante de pollo pegajoso era genial y la hamburguesa aún mejor! El aparcamiento y la ubicación es una ventaja adicional. Gracias también a la señora de rosa, por añadir risas a nuestra tarde. Recomiendo encarecidamente y sin duda volveremos.

We were surprised all times were available book for Mothers Day 30th March for Sunday Lunch, we booked for 4:30pm. On arrival the usual greeting and being allocated a table was no longer a part of the visit. On ordering were then told there were no Sunday lunches left so ordered off the Main Menu. I ordered Pie and veg at £15.99 and think the picture speaks volumes. What seemed like frozen veg and frozen mash. The Pie wasn’t too bad but for £15.99 expected something a little better. On leaving we noticed a table being served Sunday Lunch, where the Manageress joined them. Clearly they had saved some back for special guests which was a little frustrating. I cannot understand how a normally very busy Marstons Inn would run out of all meat on a Mothering Sunday when it had apparently been very quiet. We used to recommend here to our holiday Cottage guests but not now. Most likely our last visit!

Well, what an appalling visit this time. We had booked online for a meal as we had travelled up all day. When we arrived, there were a few people waiting at the bar, a family at the reception booking into the hotel. There was a single member of staff behind the bar, and another member of staff seeing to the family at the reception. We waited at the stand, "Please wait here to be seated." we waited, waited, and waited some more. Eventually we left! Utterly ridiculous that there was next to no staff.

Lovely food, although Phil and Paul were very short staffed they remained professional and helped customers. May need to add additional staff particularly on a Saturday night. But we'll done Phil and Paul.

Just spent two nights at Penny Hedge, as a group of 10 celebrating a birthday! We come here every year at this time. The staff were lovely, nothing was too much trouble, all very friendly, and took time to chat with us making us feel welcome. We ate in the restaurant, the new menu had a good choice including vegetarian options. Breakfast had a selection of food for continental choice & the cooked breakfast was good value for money. The location is perfect, a pleasant downhill walk into Whitby. See you next year !

The restaurant itself was very clean and friendly staff. However, the black coffee we ordered was weak ( you could see through it when lifted up on a spoon) and of a poor standard , when we mentioned it we were offered an instant coffee sachet to put in it which is unacceptable. Really the coffee should have been taken away and a fresh one provided. I ordered chunky chips and was given a portion which I thought was quite small … there was 12 chips in the bowl which works out at 29p a chip they tasted acceptable but felt it did not offer value for money. We had 2 coffees, a crumble & custard and a portion of chips which came to £16.99.

Our 2nd time here but won't be calling again as the staff weren't really helpful, we ordered 3 course, but we were told there was no soup and not offered anything else, after having our main meal we had to ask the table to be cleaned before our deserts and we were told they had to set empty tables first, when our deserts came they were not nice so we left.

Amazing what a difference a change of management makes , food was lovely , nice portions all served with a smile , one of the few places left still serving a mixed grill , last time i had food here a couple yrs ago i swore never again but after hearing good reviews from coworkers how good the new management were i had to give it another try and so glad i did , will deffo be back again soon , keep it up and thanks for a lovely mixed grill.

A great selection of cereals, yoghurt with fruit, honey etc. pastries and a broad selection of cooked breakfast options. We had a full English and it was well cooked, fresh and very tasty! Thank you. Waited 45min for a cooked breakfast. The food and juice ect ran out and had to wait for more bread, milk and orange juice, disappointed. The evening meal I could not fault… we again had a long wait (not enough staff?) but the food was fabulous.
