Very very disappointed as yet again coffee machine not working That's twice in two week I've not been able to have a coffee with my meal Would have thought a pub this size would be able to buy a new machine as there must be more than me disappointed

This is the best place, by far, that we have stayed at in Whitby. The staff were exceptional when checking in and were really warm and friendly. The room, the location and everything about the place was excellent. We will be staying here again for sure. Although we didn’t eat here, the food looked amazing and was so convenient having that service on your doorstep. The amenities were amazing that were close by too. Thank you so much for such an enjoyable weekend!

Just got back home from having Sunday Carvery at Penny Hedge in Whitby ! We had 2 pints of Brooklyn Beer on offer at £5.50 it was a lovely smooth craft beer really enjoyed it ! The waitresses were very friendly Suzanne went out of her way to make us welcome plus a younger waitress I didn’t catch her name who was friendly & eager to please ! We are new to the area I ordered a Vegetarian Carvery & had 3 different choices I choose a Lentil bake with my Yorkshire pudding parsnips carrots both roasted in maple syrup they were a delight…plus sprouts roast potatoes & peas with veggie gravy what can I say my plate was empty I ate every morsel Well Penny Hedge you have become my favour place to eat in Whitby I’ll be back !

Our waiting staff today were lovely and very helpful,, I'll mention Suzanne as she really took care of us. food was pretty good. We come semi regularly, about every 2 months and will continue to do so.

Was able book a booth table with helpful staff over the phone. On arrival, restaurant was clean and presentable. Food was excellent. Many thanks to staff for great experience.

Staff were really polite friendly food was of a good standard nice n hot I had the chicken curry rice nann bread and a popadum mango chutney I was full couldn't eat the popadum portion size was good my partner had cheese n bacon burger fries coleslaw onion rings Not overalls expensive either will be back

Had Sunday lunch there, 4 of us. We live very close by and would use the Penny Hedge more often, but they...... (the company who owns it, not the the guys running it). are making it Far too expensive!! However, having said that, we had a wonderful Sunday lunch served by a very pleasant and professional young lady by the name of Suzanne, I even got more pork crackling from the lovely lady. All in all we had a great afternoon / evening and will certainly be back for more of the same. We'll done Suzanne, and Marsdens stop putting up your prices every other week

Pretty average pub food and menu but delivered super fast. Good friendly service, even though it was busy. Happy customers on a late Sunday evening when most places shut.

Myself and my wife have been coming to the 'Hedge' several times a week for the last four years to enjoy a relaxing couple of hours and a coffee or two. But what is the problem with the coffee machine? Invariably it DOESNT WORK. For some weeks now we've had to resort to tea. Surely an organisation like Marston's could provide a new one!!

We arrived about 5 minutes before our last minute booking, there were already quite a few other pple already in, but this didn't make any difference to the service, we were shown straight to our table, drinks were served within minutes and our food order taken, I had scampi with chips and peas, and my sister had the potato and leak pie, we both enjoyed our meals, they were very tasy. We then enjoyed a dessert, mine was the trio of ice cream, my sisters the the apple and cherry crumble, both of which were thoroughly enjoyed. The staff were all polite, friendly and helpful making it a pleasant experience, will definitely return with or without discount vouchers, and would definitely recommend the place

From begining to end a quality experience.

My grandkids love it here. My granddaughter was a bit disappointed with the portion size of the mac and cheese on the kids meal. The other 2 kids' meals were a good size though. I thought the sea bass was also a small portion and a little overpriced.

We were staying at the Penny Hedge and decided last minute, we did infact want to eat at the restaurant. We popped in on the off chance they'd have space. The restaurant was visibly busy with large tables. Emma said they'd be able to get us a table just shy of an hour later. Which was amazing. Upon arrival the large parties were still there and we were told of about 50 minutes delay on arrival of food which was okay. Well the chefs did an amazing job as we weren't waiting that long at all. The waitress Kirsty was also fantastic from the moment she took our order. The food was incredible (I highly recommend the signature burger) and the service from Emma and Kirsty was fantastic. Ive met Emma at previous visits and she is an absolute Gem. An absolute credit to the company.

We arrived as a party of 30 pre wedding meet up we had driven 5 hours and my brother had booked tables for us to have a meal ,on arrival 7pm we were asked to order our food as it would take sometime to cook, what followed was a catalogue of disasters which would have been more in keeping to a faulty towers episode, we had ordered sharers for 6 which was chicken and kofte etc,it was brought to the table by a young waitress carrying two cutting boards laden with five bowls of food on each which was clearly very heavy,as she approached our table and stopped a bowl of piping hot kofte in sauce slid of the slipppery wooden board and covered my daughter in scalding hot sauce and meatballs all over her new clothes and has she cried out with the burning on her legs she jumped and hit on the nose with the heavy wooden board which caused more pain and distress also onto her husbands jacket, the waitress said I will bring you another dish and went away to get a dustpan and brush to clean up,my daughter had only a few serviettes to clean her clothes and no help was offered . Next came our mains of which included a Mac and cheese which had been delivered to another table and was retrieved from another customer not in our party who was about to tuck in to it, after we inquired it was brought to our table and followed by two steaks ribeye and sirloin which had been ordered medium pink but came rare and was emitting blood into the chips making them look awful.( I have pictures) . I have had some bad experiences in the past but this visit to your pub takes the trophy without a by your leave apology .

For the price, I rate the food as average. The service was good with the staff being pleasant and attentive.

Able to accommodate me as a sole traveller on Easter Sunday, even though I had not booked. They have a dog friendly area inside the pub which I think is great, the food was fantastic! I had the bacon & cheese burger and it was the best I had ever tasted, even the coleslaw was tasty, and I never usually bother with that.

Ladies who served us were very good..generally v good..not sure about burger the burger itself ok.but can't tell you what the lettuce was (it looked more like cabbage but wasn't cabbage whatever it was it was as limp as anything

Called in 23/03/2024 light snacks this comments is only on the garlic bread it was like a soggy sponge you couldn't eat it, someone needs to try this in the kitchen it was terrible, please go back to traditional garlic bread

My wife had fish that I think was sea bass, but not sure, that she said was nice. I had a leg of lamb that was very poor. I think it must have been over cooked and left under heat for a long time. A nicely cooked leg of lamb normally falls off the bone but the meat that I was served was hard and difficult to get off the bone. It was the worst one I have ever eaten. I mentioned this to the waiter who said he would raise it with the chef but he did not give me any feedback when I paid the bill. I will not be returning.

A wonderful gem of a Hotel/ Restaurant. Myself and my wife stayed for 2 nights, our room was immaculate with very modern furnishings. The restaurant service was excellent, fantastic cooked breakfast, really courteous and friendly staff. We will 100% stay here again, I highly recommend The Penny Hedge. 10/10

I have been on numerous occasions for family birthdays etc always left very happy. Yesterday booked a table for 6 for my mother's birthday, the polite waitress came over to take a drink order no coffee, then she came for food order we chose the lunch order 2 courses for £15 my nephew asked for steak - no steak then he asked for fish dishes - no fish. When our food arrived it was so so basic. Then after a long wait I had to go and ask for the dessert menu, after another long wait I again had to go and ask them to come and take the dessert order. Apart from another one maybe two tables it was empty. Will not be going back which is a shame as always been perfect in the past

Lovely food with plenty of choice and the waiter (Phil) went out of his way to help us find something without Garlic as hubby hates it. He also showed us the new flavoured soda choices which were absolutely delicious and we'd not heard of them before so will definitely try again. Nice atmosphere with no pressure to vacate table after we had finished which is nice.

If only Carlsberg was as good as Suzanne. Perfeteam member. Thank you

I spent a night at the penny hedge with my two children (8&6). I was pleasantly surprised at check-in with the thoroughness of the information (i.e. fire drills etc). The room was large enough for us, very clean and quiet. We ate in the restaurant at night, the kids really enjoyed their food, my ribeye steak was just okay though. The server (I didn't catch her name) was great too, even after my son scared her with a spider! Breakfast the next morning was really good value and was enjoyed by all of us. Nicola was really friendly and helpful and deserves a special mention. Checkout was easy. I would certainly return.

Great meal with friends, staff were accomodating, nice place to visit if you don't want to be in town, it does get busy so best to book ahead if eating.

We stayed for 2 nights and had dinner and breakfast for both days.This was our third visit.We enjoyed our stay and found the staff accommodating and helpful as we have on previous stays. We will return.

My son has loved his meal today and wants to give five star's, I have to say his chicken tenders looked very good, shame adulteals aren't as good. I would rather have his chicken tenders.

Very good rooms and restaurant. Location outside Whitby but easy transportation by bus or taxi. (Only downside was a treacherous path between the hotel rooms and the main building. Wasn’t cleared or salted sufficiently).

Took a while to get served as very short staffed , lovey atmosphere, very clean , dog friendly, staff very helpful and couldn’t apologise enough

Met friends for lunch, booked the table on line in the dog friendly area. Very easy to book with good communication confirming the booking. Varied menu, suitable for the vegetarian in our group. Excellent customer service ( we all work in the trade so know how we would expect to be treated) Food hot, received in good time.

Exceedingly nice place the food is very tasty and nice portions. The staff are excellent polite and very helpful with gluten and non lactose advice on the menu. Highly recommended

Fabulous pub with accommodation and free parking we never stay anywhere else . The staff that work here are super friendly and helpful , food has always been delicious and hot . Rooms are always clean and fresh , the hotel is 15-20 mins walk into the centre of Whitby but you can always catch the bus . Thanks again penny hedge see you in another few months .

They lovely staff went above and beyond when our hotel booking couldn't be for filled. We've visited before and this hasn't put us off in the slightest.

An excellent place to stay- really clean and quiet, welcoming staff and good food. Our son is disabled and access was excellent. 5 minutes drive to main harbour. Will definitely use again instead of a cottage.

Booked in advance. Communication was good. On arrival, service was brilliant, staff attentive and efficient. Food was delicious, decent portions, lovely flavours. Interior was nice, clean. What I especially liked was that despite the restaurant being busy both at lunchtime on Friday and at breakfast time on Saturday, all areas were open and people sat / were sat relatively spaced out.

Fantastic service from start to finish. Staff members superb....management team went above and beyond. General manager( felt for him as had no voice) could not do anymore for the customers....food outstanding and a superb menu. Our second NYE at the penny hedge and we can certainly recommend.. so much so we have a confirmed booking for NYE 24....we have visited the pub and stayed in the lodge on many occaisions and cannot fault it. Keep up the good work...we really do appreiate all you do.

Waited 30+ mins for drinks to arrive Christmas dinner waited total 1hour later! Would we go back...NEVER Pics tell the Story,... FAT on Turkey!!! Beef full of FAT £62.99.ha ha ha We were here last year the meal in June was good, but the Christmas meal... Was it done by a chef or by Basil Fawlty!!!

The food has been absolutely delicious, nothing is too much trouble, and the stress of cooking has been completely taken away. Lovely warm and welcoming place to sit and enjoy a coffee or even a bite to eat staff are always willing to help.A lovely family place to go.we love coming here.There is also a little play area outside to keep the kids entertained.

The manager was more than obliging he was 100% perfect he arranged a table for us made sure we had the right drinks served we were very impressed He told us about food that was going to be on the future menu We will deffo eat again here

My partner and I visited early December. All I can say is the choice of drinks and the different choices on the menu were great. The staff were first class and a glowing reflection on the really helpful and knowledgeable manager, (Scott).

Last night we went to the Christmas party for Whitby Wildlife Rescue Volunteers.. staff were great; really cheery. Food was very good too.

This was our first visit and my wife and I were impressed with the polite staff who were very helpful as my wife is disabled. We had the Christmas menu which we found very good, the food was tasty and hot. All in all we had a very good evening at Penney Hedge.

Had a great two night stay for our car club Christmas meet, Pete, Phil and the rest of the staff were amazing nothing was too much trouble and the definitely made our stay special, the food was amazing and the rooms were lovely and spotlessly clean we will definitely be back next year thanks to everyone at the Penny Hedge

Wonderful evening at The Penny Hedge....met either friends who we had not seen in a long time. Greeted with a smile and promptly shown to our table ( very festive by the fire and Christmas tree) Drinks served promptly and food order taken. Food was delicious and the Steak and Ale pie was a big hit with three of us...I swapped mash for chips. We skipped on desserts as meals were so filling.....Great selection on beers and wines a top favourite was the Neck Oil. Staff very attentive and looked after us really well. We will certainly be visiting again. Well done all @ The Penny Hedge.

Staying overnight to visit relatives in the area and to have them all over for a meal, which was very good and excellent service by a young man, who looked after us through the evening, room nice and clean and hopefully will get a good night's sleep, so all good so far.
