Just had a fabulous Sunday roast! The beef took me back to the olden days of true flavour. Service was excellent and the staff were very welcoming. Please don't hesitate to try this little gem if a restaurant.

An excellent lunch as usual at Penny Hedge yesterday. Vegan options for myself and my daughter available. Very well organised and spotlessly clean. Our waitress Laura finding time to discuss the menu at each table although extremely busy.

I recently stayed at this budget hotel and was so impressed that I ended up staying an extra night! The room was spotless, and the bed was incredibly comfortable, thanks to the high-end Hypnos mattress—super supportive and perfect for a restful night's sleep. The bathroom was another highlight: a piping hot shower with excellent pressure, plus some lovely soaps that added a nice touch of luxury. However, I did run into a small issue: the hand soap wasn’t refilled after it ran out on the first night, even though I had daily housekeeping. It wasn’t a huge inconvenience, but it was a little surprising given the otherwise great attention to detail. The only other downside was the brown, dated decor, which feels like it could use a refresh. It's a bit stuck in the past, but honestly, that didn’t impact my stay much at all. Overall, the hotel offers incredible value for money, and I’ll definitely be back!

Fantastic staff and lovely clean rooms

We stayed in a cottage for 2 nights round the corner from the pub,we had our breakfast and evening meal here food was realy good quality with good portions not your usual weatherspoons rubbish . We had a 2 year old with us the staff kept her entertained while we had our food , Wish we had somewhere like this near us .

The staff were very helpful and friendly and went above and beyond to assist as I was staying with a child.

Visiting the area for a few days and had the Sunday roast which was so good, we came back again today and were served by the lovely Sue. Once again the food and service was excellent. Shame it’s an 8 hour round trip or we would come again tomorrow!!

There was a bit of a wait to be seated for our reserved table as there wasn't a host at the booking station. Staff were very pleasant, place was warm and inviting. Drinks were as expected. Menu was a little disappointing. No low calorie options for our colleague and no rump steak, but we managed and what we did have was lovely, thank you.

A cosy ,friendly atmosphere.We had Sunday Lunch. The waitress quickly showed us to our table ,she was friendly and polite .The food was amazing, well presented and piping hot .The new Management have done wonders in such a short time .We will definitely return .

We called tonight with my elderly parents and their little dog. The service and food was excellent and we would highly recommend to anyone wanting a lovely meal out. The staff were very attentive and could not do enough for us whilst there making us feel very welcome. Thank you again we will be back.

Don't try to get breakfast there if you are not staying there. Checked in advance and saw food service times of 0700 to 1100. Turned up for Breakfast and a very rude man said it was hotel guests only. What a WASTE OF TIME. Go to the cafe at Dalewood Centre, 50 yards away instead. Great value food for a great cause. Open 9am to 3pm.

I cannot comment on the food as we never had any but a massive thank you to all the staff for making the place feel so welcoming. We were staying at the hotel with our son on a weekend before Xmas and it was such a lovely stay. Rooms were very clean and the staff was super nice. Rooms reasonably priced. Thank you once again.

Sadly we waited 50 mins for food and it wasn’t busy!!!! We asked twice where our food was and told it was being plated …….. our veg and sweet potatoes were lukewarm warm - coleslaw was just big chunks of onions - sorry, we won’t be back. In today’s visit we wouldn’t recommend. Not the best pub food - and not cheap end!!!

Stood for a long time with no one acknowledging our presence waiting to be seated, even though we'd booked a table. No menus brought to the table, waiter could not find menus when asked. Table service extremely slow, went to bar to order. Buttermilk chicken was off so order several children's portions of the tenders. Food took a long time to come. An adult tenders starter was incorrectly brought, we explained the mistake, the waitress asked us to describe who had served us so that she could check what we had ordered. She clearly thought we were at fault. My wife and I ordered the camembert to share. When it came out was solid in the middle. We sent it back, it returned 1 minute later having been blitzed in the microwave. There was no rosemary, garlic or extra virgin olive oil as stated in the menu but didn't send it back as we were very hungry by this point - not worth the price we paid. We have been coming for a number of years and the service and food has been steadily declining. We won't be coming again.

A local for me when visiting family. New Years Eve meal and drinks. Fantastic service and good food. Tasty, hot meal. Staff attentive and continued with good drinks service after the meal. I acknowledge that it's a busy evening but very disappointed.

Excellent service and food from the team at Penny Hedge today, we also decided to stay at the on-site hotel. Very clean, tidy and comfortable room. Carl was exceptional with his service in making us very welcome, we had lunch and came in later in the evening for drinks...again Carl made us feel very welcome.

The pub staff are all so lovely and welcoming on our arrival, Carl was our waiter, Carl is a credit to penny hedge, he just makes you smile, he is so friendly he made our weekend. The landlady was so lovely too nothing was too much trouble at breakfast. Will definitely be returning. The hotel room maids was happy to assist with a pillow, Leoni/a was very helpful. A*

Super Christmas 2 day stay and a fabulous lunch on Christmas Day … What a fantastic team you have here .. from registration to checkout and all the service in between.. this could have been a 5 star hotel .. really enjoyed it and the staff are totally customer focussed.. 11 out of 10 to team Penny Hedge .. We went to Penny Hedge yesterday for Christmas dinner. We weren't sure really what to expect as we're just staying in Whitby for Christmas week. We weren't disappointed. The place was warm, friendly and lovely decorations. Staff were great very busy but with a smile and we didn't have to wait long for our three courses and drinks. Food was excellent. One beef, one turkey, really tasty and cooked well. Thank you all for giving up your Christmas day to help us have a great one. Will certainly come back we're in the area again. Thank you 🎄

I stayed at Penny Hedge last night as I am visiting family in Whitby. The rooms were clean, beds comfy and extra pillows were available. On the morning I opted for a full English breakfast ‘the works’, it was scrumptious really good value for money. It shows that the new management have already made a huge difference to this pub.

Very busy, great atmosphere from all the staff and very attentive despite the amount of people in the restaurant on a very busy night, couldn’t do enough for you and food was really delicious thank you for a memorable

Myself and my sister thought we'd try here for something to eat with it being under new management and local to us. We would highly recommend as the food and the service was great and a very welcoming atmosphere.

Slightly disappointing, but I think it was mainly due to the lack of experience of the staff.

Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Check in was easy. Room very comfortable and clean. Breakfast choice for continental and cooked was plentiful. Nicely presented and cooked breakfast was piping hot. Menu generally was very extensive and service great at dvening meal. A great selection of beers, wine and spirits too. Staff very attentive.

Since the new land lord and lady came in the pub has been nothing but amazing everything from the food to the service has been phenomenal would highly recommend.

We pre-booked & stayed overnight Saturday in our motorhome for a charitable donation & enjoyed a beautiful discounted evening meal with drinks & an amazing Sunday morning breakfast. What a gem of a place, Debbie & Andy were very welcoming & made our short stay in Whitby a memorable one. We certainly look forward to returning again soon.

We’ve be coming to this place since it opened. 06/12/24 we had a family meal that we had been looking forward to. The place was packed out with a lovely atmosphere. The starters came & were the best we have had for a long time, then the main courses came out & they were absolutely delicious, The deserts were to die for. This is the best family meal we have had for a long time. We will be booking more meals at the Penny hedge. Compliments to the kitchen staff,head chef & the bar staff for an excellent experience with really good food. Well done Marstons for getting your act into gear. We will be back

New management, new head chef. Best meal we have ever had in Penny Hedge & we go regularly. Home made Yorkshire pudding. All veg fresh. It really was an excellent meal last night.

Just had a great weekend with friends and family the rooms was really clean and beds where so comfy could have slept for a week lol.. Fantastic service we arrived early for our table having come from the remembrance Sunday parade in town, and the staff couldn't have been more helpful in ensuring we had our meals promptly to allow us to get to the next parade. We were made to feel very welcome, including the dog.

Gorgeous little place, first time visiting and we were made to feel really welcome by the lady manager think her name was Debbie, food was really good and it was warm inside the pub which was perfect as we were freezing. Looking to spend a night there soon. Thank you 🙂

I was very disappointed with my meal. I had fish and chips. I sent the meal back as the fish I had was that thin it was stuck to the batter so was unable to eat. I did get another fish which was slightly better. I was there on the 8th October and the fish was lovely really big chunks. Myself and family regularly use the Penny Hedge but this time it wasn’t your usual high standard. ER

Just had a two night stay with my good lady we enjoyed two evening meals and thought everything was absolutely lovely. Happy staff and that made a difference genuinely cheerful people.

The restaurant was mostly empty, yet they refused to accommodate two people for a quick bite...

Granted we hadn’t booked a table, however it wasn’t busy when we arrived as a family of 4, were showed to a table that had been reserved but told it was ok as it was a “no show” We were asked within 2 mins if we were ready to order (we weren’t, hadn’t even had chance to decide) but did order drinks But unfortunately they forgot all about us and after 15 mins I went and asked at the bar for our drinks to be told there wasn’t an order - they managed to bring them over without me reordering The red haired waitress was more interested in waffing with her hair, twisting her nose ring and sitting down and popping outside for a vape / cigarette After which she didn’t wash or sanitised her hands before serving her friends that came in and also serving food from the kitchen Food was ok, no spoon for my soup Not enough knifes and forks for our main food we rectified the mistaken order and missing items Unfortunately due to the poor service I can’t recommend here What a shame

The room was clean and well-furnished. Evening meal and breakfast were value for money and extremely well-presented. All staff were polite and helpful throughout our stay.

I’ve been staying here the last couple weeks with work & I have received nothing but 5* customer service. I’d like to give a special mention to Kirsty, she’s been & absolute star. She never seems to stop working & greets everyone with a warm welcome whilst maintaining great customer service. Thank you.

We stayed at the hotel due to a family funeral. The kindness, excellent service, the pub staff showed us was second to none. We had food throughout the day and nothing was too much trouble for them. We made to feel so welcome. 100% would recommend.

What an awful place. Staff were ignoring us and just stood around talking. The food was cold bland and boring. One member of staff was too busy serving a customer ( boyfriend)? Free beer. 4 pints in total it was some bloke in orange high viz jacket and pants

A very quiet Monday night at 7pm. Loads of space on the car park and and lots of tables available. I asked for a table of 4 and they said they weren't accepting walk ins. Asked if I was staying at the hotel, I said no. They said sorry we aren't accepting walk ins. The place was so quiet I could see so many available tables and loads of space on cat park. They will be out of business before long.

Arrived to a half empty restaurant to be told they don’t do walk ins - had we been stopping at the hotel though it would’ve been fine it seemed.

In the past we have always been very happy with the penny hedge and have left good reviews. It was good quality and friendly and felt like a local rather than a faceless chain. However, our last 2 visits have changed our opinion. The old staff have all gone and they seem to have new staff. They are not as friendly and one seemed borderline miserable to be there. On the previous visit they didn’t have what I wanted which on its own didn’t bother me but my husband always has steak (medium to well done). The steak arrived and it was more like rare. Nobody came to ask us how the meal was and there seemed to be very little staff to do so. So he ate the steak but left some to show the waitress to which she replied well we can’t refund it if you’ve eaten it. We were not after a refund as yes he did eat it but we just wanted to give some feedback. On the second visit he had steak again (again nobody asked if the meal was ok) but this time the steak was more a lump of fat - over half the steak was fat. When the waiter came to collect our plates we told him and he said he would tell the chef. We had to ask what the chef said and apparently oh yeah we’ve had a few back tonight!!!!!! Overall the place seems to have gone downhill and we will be looking to find somewhere else next time. It’s a shame because previously it has been brilliant. If this had been 1 visit I would have said it was just a one off but because it seemed just as bad the second time unfortunately we will not be coming back.

A lovely lunch here again today. The staff are genuinely friendly and attentive. Plenty of choice even though my daughter and I are vegan. The food is always fresh and well presented. We can say without hesitation that the staff seem to go that extra mile to ensure visitors to the restaurant are made to feel welcome.

Steak was all fat and not cooked same through. Mentioned to staff and they went no steak expert no apologies and the friendliness of staff is non existent waited for over half hour for bad food. Had good poisoning from this meal. The server said didn't have a drink ordered even though can see it in the bar fridge

Le dijo al servidor que ella respondió bien que diferentes cortes de filete por lo que ningún Especialista. El personal nunca sonrió. La comida estaba fría y repugnante.

Absolutely lovely place, staff are very friendly and helpful, the food was delicious, there is even a doggie bar where you can help yourself to treats,water,and even a blanket. We were in a motorhome and only paid a donation to charity which is a lovely thing to do. I will definitely come back and would highly recommend it.

Después de una noche muy buena decidimos comer allí de nuevo. Nuestra comida principal fue buena, tuve el pastel de pollo y puerro que estaba sabroso, pero una extraña combinación de una salsa blanca en el pastel y una salsa de carne, sin embargo, me gustó. Me hubiera gustado un desierto pero la camarera desapareció y después de una espera bastante larga decidimos no molestar. Con todo, bastante decepcionante. En un momento dado solo había una camarera que se salió corriendo.

Another visit to one of our favourite places to stay, staff are always beyond helpful, we're always made to feel welcome, and the food is always great.
