Tow bar in Scarborough

Lovely little pub with friendly staff and lots of character

We have been to the Tow Bar many times but this last one was something else to start with i was celebrating my 80th birthday and we were in the pub around 3.30 and i asked if we could book a table for 6 people at 6.00 that evening only to be told you could only book a table for a minimum of ten people in high season this was 13th May so i offered to leave a £20 deposit which was refused. So we went in early to get the table we liked and ordered our meals which we were looking forward too well a young man brought out 2 of the meals the around 5 minuets later another 2 arrived and 10 minuets after that the last 2 arrived which were burnt i was apologising to my guests for the poor service and the state of the meals and i don't feel like eating at the Tow Bar again sorry.

Such a friendly pub can even bring dogs into part of pub and they have real ales

Great for kids to run around while adults have a chat. Food was home made and the bar was clean.

Just had a meal in here there was 12 of us in total we sat under the lean to outside where the big screen was the food was beautiful the chips were some of the best we had ever had the fish was flakes and fresh the burger was tasty and the onion rings were crispy and clearly home done the only reason I didn't do 5 stars was because the curry sauce that came with the fish and chips tasted like powder it had clearly been made from a mix which is fine but don't think it had been mixed properly so had that powder taste and was thick overall though the whole experience was nice and we would eat there again

Great staff food amazing. Place spotless clean. Dog friendly. Outside are great for everyone especially kids. Stayed at cayton bay caravan park but this pub beats it. Food is so nice big portions. Scampi n chips best I've ever had.

Really good pint of Guinness and Timothy Taylor. Well kept and reasonable prices.

Just been here for tea with our dog, we had the burger with chips and onion rings, didnt have to wait long, it was cooked to perfection, we cleaned our plates would highly recomend it

Piss poor expensive sour ale, meant to be a pale ale however bottom of barrel or off. Putting reserved notice on our table without talking to us with 2 1/2 hours to go, just ignorant Edi the owner never spoke to us when the reserve notice was placed. The beer must have been put on 'off' as it wouldn't have had the time to go off from pulling through, Been in the trade 35 years and would always have the beers tasted at the start of each day

This is a lovely friendly pub at Browns caravan park . Static and touring vans . We both had steaks they were perfect, a one for me as a fussy eater nice warm atmosphere inside . A lovely meal thank you £20 for steaks they were good one thank you

Home cooked carvery was excellent today and the beers are expertly kept too. Kids chicken nuggets made with real chicken breast. Great service and atmosphere. Highly recommended 👍👍

Thank you, to all the staff. For an amazing day on Saturday. Your first wedding and you smashed it. The food and service was outstanding nothing fazed any of you. Such a long day for you all but you all never stopped smiling and making sure everyone was OK. Thank you from my self and my husband xx

Came here as we were told they had a pool table. Always have a pool tournament with my brother. The pool table was £5 deposit,the room at the back houses the table. Great facilities. We had drinks and food, service was friendly and the atmosphere was great. The food, steak, jacket potatos burgers and the kids pizza all delicious and great quality. Highly recommend.

Good food but a little expensive for portion size

Good pint of Guinness although it is a little on the expensive side ( to be fair this seemed to be the average for the area ). The bar staff are all friendly, and there is a fantastic pool table that is clearly well looked after.

Honestly, The tow bar is WONDERFUL! The homemade chips are to die for, and their 8oz steak is so juicy and full of flavor! Definitely worth every penny!

me and my mate went in to the pub a few times we bought drinks had a lot of crisps and used the dart board it was a really good atmosphere but tonight went in around the same time as every other night got told that we could only use the dart board for 30mins because i only like water even though my friend buys drinks all of the staff were really nice and friendly accept one and quite ruined the experience she practically said we couldn’t use the dartboard because i didn’t use all the money in my bank bear in mind all i ever drink is water at home everywhere all i drink is water

Only called in for a couple of pints to dodge the great British weather, Lovely place. Very well kept and absolutely immaculate. I'd love to come back in the summer to take advantage of that beer garden.

Great little pub for families with a varied menu, tasty food, great kids playground & plenty of atmosphere. They've thought of it all no matter the weather, with a covered outdoor area that honours Scarborough's football history accompanied with artificial grass & a big screen for matches.

Haddock had soggy batter, mushy peas were probably out of a tin and were thrown away, chips were ok, you'd be better going to Cayton fish shop much nicer and half the price.

We always have a late summer break at Park Dean but only use The Tow Bar. Great staff, great food and a friendly atmosphere. See you all next year. Mick & Sal

What a place! They have a dog friendly section and non-dog section inside. The staff were helpful & knowledgeable with allergies. Good selection of food & drinks. The food was delicious! They also sell food, treats etc for dogs which I thought was a nice touch. Plenty of seating outside under cover & my little one loved the park.

Sadly the food was disappointing. 2 out of 4 meals were OK at the most. The fish was dry, the chips sadly had a bad taste (old oil) the curries were OK, but clearly a jar sauce. Such a shame as the bar looked so cute and quirky from the outside

What a fantastic afternoon last Saturday 31Aug at The Tow Bar, Cayton Bay! Staff at the bar were very quick& efficient on a day with LOTS of people sitting in the lovely garden. Food great&prompt service. We were treated to singing and guitar by Jack Robertson, songs ranging from the on-trend Oasis numbers to Dylan to Arctic Monkeys. We all joined in with James' "Sit Down" and then DM's "American Pie" at the end. It made for a perfect afternoon. Cheers!

Great place to have a nice drink and a chat plenty for the kids to do in the beer garden

Neat, well cared for, cosy and clean environment. Food was excellent. Dogs made welcome too.

I'm not one to complain normally, but the fish & chips were really disappointing, the chips were obviously frozen & the oil they were cooked in left a bad taste. I suppose they have a captive market with their location.

We called into the pub for drinks didn't have any food but the food we saw being brought out looked very nice staff friendly the one downside was my daughter and grandson had an ice cream cornet each and were charged 9 pounds for 2 cones which I think is a complete rip off

Good value ales and nice atmosphere

Hice el pedido de comida que llegó lo suficientemente rápido. Sin embargo, no fue lo que pedimos. Patatas fritas en lugar de patatas, que tampoco eran tan agradables. El eglefino era mediocre, por decir lo menos. El curry estaba más seco que los panes naan sobre cocidos y también llegó sin el popadomo ordenado. Enviaron uno que fue horrible. Extremadamente sobrecocinado y tenía aceite flotando en él! Una factura de más de £ 50 (solo tenía un refresco cada uno) para la comida que es francamente muy caro por lo que es. Las “chozas” al lado de las carreteras lo hacen mejor!

Comimos aquí 3 veces durante el transcurso de una semana de vacaciones. Tenemos 2 niños que son celíacos y tenían algunas excelentes opciones sin gluten disponibles. Personal amable y servicial y un ambiente agradable.

Yorkie casero gigante lleno de bondad de la cena del domingo. Excelente tucker, buena relación calidad-precio. No puedo esperar para volver. Tuve que llevarme una bolsa de perrito de vuelta con casi la mitad sin terminar. 😳

Ate here a couple of time and the portions are huge. Hot and well cooked. Had proper fresh veg served that was perfectly cooked, not too hard and not mushy either. We tried the gammon, the pie, the curry and the scampi. All was good but the only thing that let it down was the chips. Had some very pale soft chips and some very hard overcooked chips on the same plate. No choice for fries either which is a shame but the rest of the food we had was great. Good value for money. Friendly staff and reasonably quick service.

Me and my partner called in for a drink on the way back to our campervan. My partner was sat outside on a bench, when the waiter basically threw a hot bowl of curry and rice all over her. The waitress that came to clean everything up, just handed my partner a piece of blue kitchen roll, never spoke and seemed really put our that she had to clean it all up. We asked on more than one occasion to speak to the manager, who eventually came out and offered us a round of drinks, we don't drink alcohol so we declined, she said that she could only offer us a free coffee and a dessert, which we accepted at that moment in time. I had said who would pay for the cleaning, or replacement of clothes if the curry had stained, this fell on deaf ears. Subsequently the curry has stained my partners New Balance running leggings, Adidas hoodie and my tote bag. Not once did the manager ask for our details or suggest an acceptable outcome. £90 of clothes ruined, which a coffee and dessert can't fix. Ironically the replacement curry brought out to the other customer was cold and sent back by them.

Great seaside pub. Always call here when we are in Cayton Bay. Great beer garden drinks offers and one of the best beer gardens around.

This was my 1st visit to this pub, my daughter & myself ordered a tuna mayo sandwich each, the young girl brought them out no cutlery I had to ask for it, the bread on my sandwich was nice (brown) my daughter had white it was dry & crispy, the tuna mayo was like slop all mayo & not much tuna at all, if your charging £7.95 for sandwiches I'm sure you could add more tuna!!

Not impressed with either food or drink

Loved this place! Food was excellent, good selection of beers, and my son adored the outside play area. Literally over the road from parkdean too. Spot on. Good luck to the Seadogs this season - Boston United fan 👍

Sat near the bar as I was on my own. Ordered a pizza and a shandy. I had to cover my pizza (because of the flies) when I went to the bar for another shandy. I needn't have bothered as my pizza was whisked away while I was at the bar. When I brought this to the attention of the six bar staff most found it amusing and eventually one stepped forward and sorted another pizza. At no point did I receive an apology. We all get flies in this weather but most of us deal with them through better hygiene.Also there was obviously someone sat at that table as my rucksack was on the chair and various personal items on the table. I was only a few feet away from the table but my back was turned and got served quickly. Why the server or person who took my food could not ask if I had finished shows a very low level of customer service. The last time I checked your pub is located between two large campsites, any fields are some distance away so your excuse doesn't wash. Therefore my comment about your hygiene was necessary. Yes, I left my clean napkin over my food, but that does not detract from the fact that the table was obviously occupied

Brown's Caravan Park own the Tow Bar Pub. We have holidayed on the East Coast of Yorkshire for years now and have passed the pub regularly, thinking its just a pub right, wrong. We had a smashing time there, the food, staff and ambience is brilliant, thank you to all we'll be back !!

Lovely food here ,great staff too plenty of staff working. Lovely atmosphere lots of friendly people . It's a free house so a few different ales and plenty of choice . Definitely recommend it .

Nice menu.only had pizza ,my wife had burger and chips, both lovely (we shared) gr8 selection of beers etc. Dog friendly and gr8 outside beer garden with a park for the kids 😀

Visited Sunday the 30th June for a carvery. The carvery was absolutely top notch. Just gutted I live in Glasgow as I'd happily go every Sunday for another one. The play park foe the kids outside is brilliant as well, brilliant condition and the garden area was safe and secure. What a brilliant wee pub will see you again next year.

A great atmosphere, good location

Excellent Carvery great value, traditional food at its finest, excellent portion size and quality ingredients, cater for gluten free too. Highly recommended for anyone in the area of Cayton Bay, staff 10/10

We attended for a live, being locals we called the pub last minute to find out if the band was still on due to the weather, the pub said the band was still on so with that in the a 30 minute period we turned up to find out it was cancelled and instead replaced it with a band that was their to rehearsh. Shortly afterwards all kids where removed from the area due to HSE issues with the weather, in a fully sheltered area, and we were sat at the back a good 8 meters away, understandable.....but drunken men could sit within a couple of meters from the band......surely your RA would deem this a higher risk??? In the end we left and not returning again!

We had a small cooked breakfast which was lovely. All the staff are very good especially Matthew whom we spoke to. Really like the food and atmosphere of this pub.

Such a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Home-made chips were gorgeous, as was the steak pie and reasonably priced. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The beer garden is fab, and the icing on the cake was that they showed football, too.

Food average,Tapas:- prawns over cooked and like rubber, small portions and swimming in cream. Squid, delicious . Scampi was nothing to shout about, good size pieces but again came with a pre packed portion of Tatar sauce, so quite disappointed , curry over spiced with no particular flavour, drinks very pricey, no doubles offer ( even during happy hour 😂). Meal cost without drinks £40 for two people. 3 drinks £19, Staff very pleasant, overall not impressed 🤷🏽‍♀️

We are a group of friends who have just spent the last four evenings in the tow bar .We were made most welcome by the Manager and staff .We really enjoyed the food and the beer 🍺. Thanks for the great welcome, we hope you enjoy the sweets. We will be back soon.

Great service, lovely warm food and great value for money! Homemade chips were very good! I would definitely recommend here and will make sure to come again.

We went for a Sunday dinner, I think we just went at the wrong time really. Some of the food was cold, staff were nice and cheerful but the most uncomfortable feeling was the glares from the locals. Not a nice environment for incoming customers.

Ace weekend away, popped into pub Friday night had quiz and fun games, staff brilliant, I was slightly drunk, couldn't remember our order of drinks between friends and family, staff smashed it and got it bang on, food on Sunday was excellent 👍🏼

Good pint and a nice atmosphere

We stopped in the caravan park across the road which was very handy for 3 nights. And visited the Tow Bar every day and night The atmosphere was brilliant as were the staff We had food on the first day which was very good and on Sunday we had the carvery. We had a selection of 4 meats which was great, but the Yorkshire puddings were hard and the cauliflower was under cooked The place was quiet busy and has a good selection of beers and also has a lot of tv's with various sport on. The beer garden is great and dog friendly Would recommend this pub

Had a chicken burger which was encased in a burger I had never tasted or seen the like of, part defrosted, with an odd griddled pattern baked in to its stale husk. Biting in to it a spurt of grease fired on to my arm and very nearly scalded it. The wasps were being outdone by the large amount of flies.

Fantastic food, can tell the chef actually cares. Had the burger with blue cheese, and they don't shirk on the quantity, something chain restaurants could learn from. Chips were great too, Gammon looked really good. Guinness was flowing and only stopped due to a train to a catch. Would definitely recommend a bit of food and few drinks to pass the time in a beautiful location.

Called in for a cheeky pint after a 4.5mile walk along the cliffs. Good selection of hand pulled ales along with a varied choice of keg beers and lagers. Enjoyed sitting in the beer garden too.

Shocking food cold pizza tasteless curry. Don’t know what’s happened from last year because it was bang on then. It’s a shame

This pub was recommended to us at the beginning of our holiday at Cayton Bay Holiday Park, but we decided to leave it until this evening to visit as we are going home tomorrow. This pub is literally across the road, and on some evenings, you can hear the outside live entertainment. I had read the previous reviews and felt it was a bit of a hit or miss. I didn't allow it to put me off and felt I needed to visit and judge for myself. I am SO GLAD I DID. The Tow Bar was extremely busy, which tells me instantly how good it must be. The pub was warm, welcoming and the staff friendly. We managed to find an available table, which was next to the disabled toilet, which I did not see beforehand, or I wouldn't have chosen to sit there. The menu has a limited selection, but there is lots to choose from, if you get what I mean. The prices are, on average, a bit more than what I would spend, but on receiving our meals, it was more than plentiful. I did choose to have extras such as the gorgeous homemade onion rings and coleslaw. The queue was long (people were served quickly) when ordering our meals and drinks, and I was surprised as to how quickly our food was delivered to us. Our meals were beautiful, and we were incredibly impressed with it all, including the service from the bar staff and the young man who delivered our meals. There is an outdoor hut called called 'The Hitch' that offers waffles, ice cream, and milkshakes. I did see a member of staff go out of her way to accommodate a little boys request of a milkshake because it had closed, which I thought was so kind of her. This is a lovely and lively, friendly family pub and I would highly reccomended you to visit. I have attached photographs of the menu because it was something I couldn't find on the reviews, which I would have liked to have seen beforehand 😊

Very expensive for what you got, Chips half the portion was scraps , quick service. If we went again, it would be just for a drink may go to see Danny wild if we are out there

Stayed at Clayton Bay and visited the tow bar everyday for lunch. Food was lovely tried most on menu. Gammon steak was very tasty lovely chips too. Would highly recommend

Great 👍 Pub 🍻. Just fancied some Scampi and Chips. Not eaten any for Years now. The Spuds were excellent 👌. You can tell that they have used a good quality Spud for the Chips. Scampi was delicious 😋. Other half had a Burger 🍔 and Chips and he enjoyed his meal. Drinks also went down well. And it's Dog friendly in the Areas that Dogs are allowed in. Staff were brilliant. Had a Laugh 😂 hearing lads in kitchen cooking. Which was funny for us. We love a good laugh. And our little Dog Archie enjoyed his free Biscuit from the Bar 🍻. One young lad said if there's anything you need just ask. Well I need a diploma to open them sachets of Tartar Sauces with 😂😂😂. Would highly recommend this Pub for Grub....

Stopped off after walking up from Cayton Bay Beach. The beer garden was lovely and there was lots of bowls about so the dog could get drink as well.

Great food lots of choices.would recommend the tapas was lovely and a great price.Homemade onion rings which is a good plus for me.Lovely staff and all worked really hard when it was so busy.

Lovely grub! Ordered between 8 of us a selection off the menu, including burger / BBQ ribs, halloumi fries, pasta, sausages, onion rings and much more! The food was cooked to perfection, chips are beautiful! the service was 5 star, very quick and polite. We will definitely be returning and recommend!

A reasonable bar. If you have a pet, there are not enough seats inside on inclement weather days. The food was good, and it took an age to arrive, which was its downside. Kids play area and seats tables outside.

One of the worst meals I've been presented with in ages. Chips greasy, burger burnt, cheese also cremated. Never again.

Pretty good, had special board beef curry it was pretty nice big bits of beef, nice mango chutney, just let down by oily popadom, kids had pizza and it was ok

Lovely breakfast plenty large enough and that was a small.
