So it’s been very nicely redecorated recently and I appreciate the revamp of surroundings. Sadly the food doesn’t match the decor. We went Monday lunchtime so it was quiet and had brisket beef sandwich and fish finger sandwich both with chips. While both were edible they were not great and frankly I would expect better. Churchtown has several eateries and if you are to maintain your market share I suggest you improve what leaves the kitchen before your customers abandon the food here. It’s a great pub in the heart of the village but I’m sure would like repeat patrons

Seems more geared up to food than drinking. Bar service was sloppy: although the pub was really quiet the barman couldn’t be bothered to say ‘thank you’ when he took my money, then just plonked my pint on the bar with beer slopping over the edges. Okay, it’s no big deal but on the other hand it’s not good enough. I don’t want to go into a pub to be treated like an inconvenience. Such a shame, this used to be a ‘proper’, well-run pub. The Bold Arms across the road is miles better.

I went recently with my husband to celebrate our anniversary and we had a wonderful time. I don't usually even eat meat but made an exception to share the lamb kofta as a starter, we were then very impressed with the generous portion size of the sea bass (would definitely recommend!) and to top it off there were more desserts on offer than at most places. Overall, great value, great food and great service from Daisy :)

We have dined here many times over the years and is normally very good but they have had a revamp recently and it's like a completely different place in terms of service and food quality. Menu to start is very limited not much choice, we dined at 2:30pm and they had 'ran out' of their only burger choice and also 'ran out' of pepsi, forcing me to order something else. We waited 15 minutes for drinks ( I had to remind them), 30 minutes for starters and then a further hour for mains, we sat windeing what was going on it was ridiculous . Food was average and was a hefty bill for what it was. Friends have also had the same experience recently and none of us will be returning which is a shame as this is a place we always liked to go for food.

One of our favourite pubs with a good choice of foods and beers. The Sunday lunch is always great and the staff are friendly and helpful. The added bonus is the fact the pub is dog friends and is next door to Botanic Gardens for a post lunch walk. The pub is looking great after its recent refurb!

We had a brilliant morning with my son at the animal and brunch experience. The breakfast was lovely and all the staff where fab. The animal experience was probably the best one we've ever been to (we've been to a few lol) the guy and his daughter where brilliant with the kids and the animals all looked healthy and were happy to be handled. It was a really lovely atmosphere with the staff getting involved and helping the kids feel at ease. Really hope they do more things like this, me and Leo will definitely be back x

Really disappointing, for somewhere with such a lovely location, it’s ruined by the lack of customer service and the poor quality of food being served. The atmosphere wasn’t great considering it was a bank holiday weekend and the app you are asked to use is useless. Staff are not attentive and evidently don’t have any customer service training. The manager on shift was very abrupt and had a really poor attitude. The food was mediocre at best, served lukewarm. Bread was hard. The quality of food is nowhere near the price. Overall, a really negative experience and would not come here again. This is a local for us and has really put me off even wanting to stop for a drink as there are other pubs in the village that provide a much better service and experience. It really is a shame as this used to be such a nice place to visit.

We love the Hesketh we visit regularly with our children, lately the food quality has really dropped off. We always try and get Lucy as our server as she is wonderful with our children, she engages with them and helps them choose their meals. We visited last Sunday, the atmosphere wasn't its usual seemed tense, the pub wasn't as busy as usual. We noticed they have a new lady working there (assistant manager) she was very snappy with the young staff and her manner is very brusque, not at all in keeping with the what we have seen in the Hesketh before. Our food wasn't the best, not as hot as it could have been. Lucy was as amazing as ever, but the food was lacklustre as was the atmosphere. We are so disappointed with the direction the Hesketh is heading, it is our local and we love that we can go botanic gardens for a walk then head in for Sunday lunch. Really needs a new direction, we noticed that it wasn't as busy as usual. Being such a lovely village pub such a Shame to see the standards dropping at such a speed.

This was our first visit to The Hesketh, we had a two course meal from the Lunch Set Menu, mid week Unfortunately the Salt & Pepper Calamari was not available so I chose a starter of Creamy Garlic Mushrooms in cheese which was good, but strangely I couldn’t taste any garlic, which I really enjoy, just the cheese! My Chicken Panang Curry was nicely presented and the chilies gave it a nice ‘kick’ but it was okay. My wife enjoyed her Pate, followed by the Panang curry but she was overwhelmed by the amount of green beans in it , a lot more than on my plate. She dislikes beans, so it spoiled her meal. It was not mentioned in the menu that beans were part of the meal otherwise she’d have chosen a different meal. Service was sluggish, after finishing our first course we waited over 25 minutes until our plates were cleared. I ordered another drink having enjoyed a pint of Wainwright bitter at the same time and waited over 10 minutes for it. The staff were friendly and on leaving the manager thanked us for visiting. Overall this was a disappointing experience.

Family had visited before, so came with good expectations we visited early evening 12.05.24 there was 7 of us so waited a while which we didn’t mind. Firstly the soda water (2 of) both tasted as if they had bleach in changed supplier apparently so just opted for different drinks which was fine. Ordered 5 starters only 4 came just told them to knock one off the bill all tasted fine then mains arrived after an hours wait, the gentleman that brought them up who I can only assume was the manager was extremely pompous no apology for the wait, 2 of the party had ordered fish and chips one was ok one was totally inedible I have never fish as dry ever the bread and butter that was with the fish and chips was that stale and hard it was only good for ducks !! Then another 3 in the party had ordered lasagna the actual middle was ok but round the edges I have never seen anything as burnt, they had obviously all been left under a hot plate (including the bread and dried up) we spoke to the server about the fish who agreed it was dry and she offered us another meal but we did not have time to wait so we were told it would be knocked off the bill (it wasn’t) Oh and the original starter that didn’t arrive came with the mains onion rings with fish and chips !!! All in all the only positive was our server who was a lovely young lady but other than this no positives and will not return which is a shame as we are a large family who would have visited often when seeing our relatives in Southport and would have spent quite a bit of money in there but definitely will not be back.

My husband and I have just moved to the area, been to Hesketh a few times, still finding our feet round the village. Today will be the last time, a member of staff (the assistant manager) was having a full on row with a family over mashed potato, clearly the wrong dish had been served and she set about the family, I was appalled. Had it have been me I would have got up and walked out. We actually did. The atmosphere in this pub is awful assistant manager’s attitude is a disgrace. (Needs training in customer service) We will continue our quest to find a local, such a shame as there are nice staff in there but her nasty attitude has put us off we won’t be back.

Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere in this beautiful pub. My husband enjoyed his fish and chips which was warm but unfortunately although my lamb was delicious my whole meal was cold and I was disappointed in a tablespoon of the gratin potatoes and 2 stems of broccoli as the dish was expensive. Ordered 3 meals - lasagna, and two steak sandwiches. After a lengthy wait the lasagne was more like soup containing minimum of meat and pasta. Both steak sandwiches came cold with cold gravy - one of the sandwiches was very short of steak in one half. The lasagna was left part eaten. The chips were over cooked. At no time did any server ask if the food was ok even including when I came to pay the bill. Decide not to risk dessert and left as quickly as possible. Would never visit again

Went for Sunday lunch. Was fairly early on and wasn’t exceptionally busy so went to the bar to order drinks and myself and others were stood around for about five minutes at the non staffed bar while obvious staff members were working around the pub, no one bothered to acknowledge any of us or offer a simple “we will be with you shortly”. When someone did come no apology was offered for the wait either. We ordered food as two couples and paid per couple and I asked if the food could be served together and was told the food just comes out in the order the chefs cook them. Clearly the kitchen and bar staff are incapable of speaking to each other with a simple request. It’s the sort of answer I’d expect from a fast food chain. The food itself was tasty and well cooked and the only reason I didn’t give a lower score. Price wise it varies, the 3 for £10 plates are a good offer but £16 for a chicken burger isn’t great value. We were asked a courtesy how our food has, but that was as we were leaving, bit late if we didn’t enjoy it by that point. Overall a lovely pub in a great location with good food, let down by poor basic service levels probably as a result of bad management.

Booked a table for 5pm, took 20 minutes for drinks order, took another 15 minutes for them to arrive and that was due to prompting the staff ( in which wine glasses where missed, so we had to go and get them ourselves) After a while, our food order was taken (3 roasts, 2 kids meals), food luke warm, not particularly tasteful, missing Yorkshire on one of the plates, average at best. Overpriced for what it is especially considering what’s on offer elsewhere, I appreciate places can be busy at times but extremely disappointed and leaves a sour taste knowing it cost almost £100 for the experience.

Evening meal tonight, despite all the customer reward discounts its not worth the effort, after tonight we are not going there again for food which I advised staff so. Family of four, the food was cold and the plate of seabass for £18.50 is one of the poorest examples I have ever seen and twice served from the same venue. What can I say when you are asked to hand your menus in a week before so they can prepare for 8 adults and 4 children and still get the whole night wrong. On arrival it took 45 minutes for the starters to arrive, then another 45 minutes for the main meals to arrive of which 2 meals were missing, then another 45 minutes for us to ask once again where were the desserts. At this point, we had had enough as the 4 youngsters had passed their bedtime. I asked for a refund on the desserts which I was given. The place wasn't busy so I've no idea what the problem was but it was totally unacceptable and a total letdown for my brother's birthday. Bear in mind this was a sitting at 5pm on a Wednesday night, so I can't imagine what shambles it would on a busy weekend. Avoid at all costs if you have children or adults on a special occasion.

Lovely place, although it could do with some minor decor details being taken care of, i.e., light bulbs blown or missing, but nothing too serious. The starters of salt and pepper squid and deep fried camembert were excellent, and so were the mains. All in...

Zero stars if that option was available. Food awful, lukewarm main course, starter had half of it missing served with dry bread. Chef seems to think putting pea shoots garnish on everything enhances the meal. As for the irish coffees served with squirty cream on...

We came for a Sunday lunch and we’re not disappointed. The roast beef was delicious. Beautifully cooked fresh vegetables. Chunky roast potatoes and piping hot gravy in a separate gravy boat. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Lucy our waitress was efficient and pleasant.

Food and staff good. Pub was overcrowded with extra chairs and tables meaning people couldn’t get into the seats of the empty tables as they were blocked by the people sitting behind them. Wetherspoons Southport looked dirty and unkempt, all 3 coffee machines didn’t work. The staff were polite efficient and pleasant and keep the place ticking over. If it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t go again. The owner makes lots of money and is treating his customers poorly . Outside the tables area was littered with stub ends of cigs why is he allowed to keep tables on the grass verges now covid is over?

I had been xmas shopping and finished the afternoon off at the pub for our evening meal with my family, we had Kim for our server l thought she was refreshingly friendly , helpful and eager to accomodate in the respect of making sure our small child had a high chair available to use. She pointed out early on that the pub restaurant would be closing early so that we had plenty of time to order our food. I asked Kim did she reccomend anything and she suggested the Lamb kofta wrap , which was very nice and I will have it again. We had excellent service from everyone on the night including Jill, Jack and Ant. I have only recently started going to the Bakers Dozen and I will return as it is so handy and a warm comfortable relaxed pub to be in, a good family pub. Thankyou to the staff on the night.
