Hendos in St Edmundsbury

We came in on random weekday for lunch and it was amazing! The food was so good. We had sausage, chips and ice cream - it was all flawless. The service was also great! The owners were really welcoming and attentive. I’d recommend this place in a heartbeat! We’ll be back.

What a disappointment! Came here a couple of times when it first opened, the "fish and Chips" were superb! Decided to come again last Monday, Oh dear! how things have changed, ordered Fish and Chips. My fish (Haddock) was so dry I could hardly eat it, my colleague felt the same, and the "batter" was not a tradional batter but a "coating" I think that the fillet of fish plus the "coating" had been frozen, then deep fried when ordered? The chips were excellent! I know that it was Monday, but even so......................I must say that I was offered another piece of fish by the waitress.

Delicious ice cream! Had the chocolate and vanilla twist which was good value for the size I chose, and was creamy and tasty. Loved being able to choose from so many complementary flavoured sauces too. Service was friendly and efficient even though we were placing quite a big order. Will definitely be back.

All I can say is “WOW” the best milkshake I’ve ever had!! Great when discussed my allergies. We will return for fish and chips but, for now, milkshake will do

Welcomed and seated quickly. When our food came it looked great, chips were gorgeous, told they were new crop potatoes, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. Sausage bit spicy for me but my husband enjoyed them.

Absolutely awful... had to wait 15 mins for a takeaway and they were not particularly busy...didn't tell us there would be a 15 min wait until after they took our money. They only cook individually to order so no chips available without a wait. Food was awful.. overcooked and terribly over greasy. I live in Bury St Edmunds and we have a wealth of chip shops to choose from... this was our first visit and our last. Avoid like the plague. Absolutely terrible.

Went on a Friday night for a solo supper after work. Obviously the busiest time of the week for a fish and chip shop but the staff were always attentive and extremely hard working, juggling takeaways, delivery orders and seated diners. Despite all that I was served a fresh plate of fish and chips within ten minutes straight from the frier with the delicious homemade tartare sauce. The triple-cooked chips are great and you get a sizeable portion. The fish is good and the batter is thick but still light and crispy. It's a little tricky because as a dining experience it is still very much a chippy so although you're paying a decent amount to dine in you won't get a restaurant experience. Staff will be rushing around, calling orders to eachother and you'll get the clatter from the kitchen. But that's all part of the fun. You do pay a premium here even for a takeaway but it's definitely worth the few quid extra to support a proper local independent business and to get the extra quality.

The best fish and chips I've had in ages. Stopped herefor lunch with my wife Great little find. The restaurant was extremely busy and we had to wait for a outside table. We'll worth waiting for. The waitress was polite and helpful.

Everything is really great except that I realised later that I had been overcharged - charged for full meals when we only had the light bites. I like to think it was a mistake?

Thoroughly enjoyed the excellent haddock and chips with a side of traditional mushy peas. Excellent chips and perfect fish. The service was good. Very friendly and helpful staff. I can understand why they win awards.

The very best fish and chips I have had! The haddock was flaky, the batter was light and crisp and the tartare sauce was excellent.

Yes mixed feelings. All came out rather too quick and all very luke warm after short journey home. All tasted fine after quick snap in Microwave. Prefer Mushy Peas like those steaped overnight rather than crushed fresh peas. The curry sauce was excellent

Cannot recommend this restaurant enough. I turned up late to pick up a take away and they very kindly cooked a fresh order after they had had to discard the original order because of my lateness. The fish and chips were perfect as usual and will be going there again as it the best.

We had a sit-down meal in here on a busy Saturday afternoon but the service was great and we didn't have to wait too long. We had a small portion of cod and chips each and it was perfect - well cooked and just the right size. Most other times I eat fish and chips there's always too much food and it detracts from the quality because I end up feeling stuffed - this was ideal. The Stokes sauces offered with the meal are a nice touch (especially the brown sauce). A lovely meal - highly recommended

A really excellent Fish n chip restaurant. We have had the best fish n chips here for a very long time, with crispy batter and triple fried chips that your do not get in a normal British chip shop. Also great service and very good prices.

Absolutely beautiful fish, so fresh and delicious. My wife said it’s the best fish ever. Lovely and hot, my son had the chicken fillet and said it was great. Thoroughly recommend.

Extremely good fish and chips both times we have been. We ordered online for collection which worked extremely well. Nothing was greasy and it was the best fish and chips takeaway we have had in Bury. We would definitely recommend the minted peas!!

Mixed feelings about this one. Very good chips and tartare sauce excellent. Cod not bad and a reasonable size but not happy with the batter as it was tempura style and not traditional which I'm sure is not for the best. Some oil on the plate as well and could have been better drained. Also the cost at 15 quid for a large cod and chips is more than a little over the top. Very pleasant staff though and good service

I’m was not to impressed ! Cod & Chips 1 large,1 small both fish that were served came in greasy thick batter not the best . Staff seemed more interested in messing around the serving counter than looking after the customers.

Great food and staff, We were shown to a table euivh was wiped down before we were seated, hubbie had cod,chips, I had plaice,chips, plaice was huge I couldn't eat it all, and cooked to order, nice crispy batter and no grease, i asked lady who,took our order and served for a spoon as I have shaky hands, so I find it a bit iffy to eat with a fork, and several times she came and asked if I was ok,

The batter was crispy and not greasy service was quick and friendly and good attention to detail we all enjoyed our meal

The fish and chips we had recently were the best ever - and we have some good chippies in East Anglia. The batter was so crisp without being greasy, as were the chips, and it came with delicious tartare sauce. We’ll be back and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Fish and chips and mushy peas washed down with a mug of tea - Absolutly delicious. The staff were lovely and friendly as well. Nothing else to say apart from the fact that we will definitely visit again .

Have visited Hendos multiple times. The triple cooked chips are reliably excellent. Elsewhere triple cooked chips have been slightly undercooked, but because these are thin fries they're soft in the centre and crispy in the outside. The fishcakes are a real triumph. Good fish quality...

It’s been a very long time that I’ve ever had the BEST FISH & CHIPS and it’s in our hometown! The fish was so fresh and tender. I’ve never had fish so fresh from a chippie before. And the chips not bad either.

Went here for a chippy lunch one week day and it was lovely. We had fishcake and salt & pepper squid which were both nice and the chips weren’t too greasy. To top it off the service was brilliant. Will definitely be going back.

Went to Bury St Edmunds for Xmas shopping. On the way out we noticed Hendo's. We popped in for take away chips. The best chips by far we have had in a while. The staff were so helpful. Well worth a visit.
