Hen and Chicken in East Hampshire

Had the most amazing meal here last week. Was a party of 6 and all of the meals were delicious, hot and fantastic value for money.

Delicious panninis. Great value week day carvery.

Fabulous food, friendly staff, good atmosphere, what's not to like. Would highly recommend, and visit regularly.

Great local pub. Had an issue with their booking system when we last went but they looked after us after a wait. Might have been a nice idea to comp our drinks given we had to wait 30 mins for lunch but other than that service was decent and the carvery was good.

Having read good reviews we decided to call in midweek early evening for dinner. No greeting or warm welcome despite bar being quiet. Was not made to feel welcome and left after one quick drink. Sadly, it must have been an off day as there are lots of good reviews on here from previous customers!!

Four of us went here for a friendly lunch because it’s conveniently located and we found the food excellent for what it is last time. But today was different. I again had the fish and chips and I have to say this was the most overcooked piece of fish it has been my misfortune to eat. The fish was almost cooked away and what was left was a great wedge of very crisp batter surrounding - nothing. The staff are friendly and the service was good, but all of the food looked stodgy and uninviting. My fish was the worst, but two of my companions had fish and chips too and I could see that their’s was not much better than mine. I never complain in restaurants, but I did today. They took the price of mine off the bill. My advice is give this place a miss until they appoint a chef who knows how to cook.

Good food and a homely atmosphere with an open fire

Great easy to get to pub, cavery linch was great, beef cooked to perfection, will definitely be going back and recommending.

What a table service by a tall, filled out strapping man. Great beard and a well maintained pony tail. Top notch table service. Really polite. If he is the new owner then this place will do very well.

Popped in for lunch and panini and was impressed. Chips and salad leaves with the panini. Very busy but didn’t have a long wait. New management but seems to be just as good as before. Will continue our regular visits.👍

Recently had a change of ownership. Stopped in today and tried the carvery, everything hit the spot. Service was really good from the ladies at the bar and the kitchen staff too, even though it was quite a busy lunch period. Thanks Rob, Tracey, Kate and the rest of the team for making me feel so welcome, I'm sure I'll be back again!

A last minute birthday celebration booking. 6 of us dining, 5 of us ate off the main menu and I ate from the carvery. Starters and mains for all of us. The nachos are yummy but be warned it’s a large portion. Everyone was really happy with their choices, I can only speak for the carvery. I was given all 3 meats, beef, turkey and pork, whilst the beef was a little chewy they other two meats were lovely. A good selection of vegetables and roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and gravy, my plate was quite full. The meal was lovely, the atmosphere was good, the staff were lovely. We will be back.

As a large family, big family meals out are difficult. Even more so at short notice! Having only driven past a few times, we called the Hen And Chicken and they could offer a table for 10 on a Sunday evening with full roast carvery. On arrival we were sat at our table immediately and offered drinks and menus... some of us had carvery, some had menu meals... not a problem. Drinks great. Food fantastic. In fact, the carvery had taste and texture where it should. I havent had a carvery this good for many many years. They sorted out our birthday cake without a problem and made sure we were fed and watered. And then came the bill. This was another pleasant surprise, and one I had to question because it was so low! So, excellent value food and drink in a lovely location with great service.

Another great Christmas meal at The Hen & Chicken. Great food and a fantastic atmosphere. As we have been here a few times before, this is our go-to venue for Xmas events. I recommend this pub/ carvery and has traditional values in a great setting.

Have previously had a lovely carvery with family here before, but whatever has happened? Chose beef and turkey. The chef couldn’t have sliced a thinner piece of beef if he’d tried - and not a full slice either. It was also gristly. Turkey a bit better and more thickly sliced. Stuffing - dry and hard ( I got the end piece). The roast potatoes and parsnips were good. Some almost empty dishes of veggies - red cabbage, carrots and cabbage - to choose from - left overs perhaps from earlier servings. Gravy could have done with being hotter. Let’s hope this was just a bad day for the carvery and not replicated in the future.

Wonderful pub! Driven past it a million times but the first time I’ve eaten there. Very nice and warming pub. Sunday carvery is pictured is lovely but we opted for other items on the menu. The garlic prawns were outstanding! Staff were very friendly and the service was quick. I’ll be back soon!

First visit tonight with friends. Great warm friendly atmosphere. Wonderful attentive staff provided great service. The carvery was hot fresh and delicious, desserts equally so. Nice broad selection of good beer on the bar. Very, very reasonably priced. The perfect local pub.

I went to a Rotary dinner in The Barn. The waiting staff were great and the food was delicious. Another Rotary dubbin last night. The staff and venue were excellent.

I miss the carvery they used to do. It’s only lunchtime now. Wednesday evening is now Pie and a Pint £18. We also asked for veg - broccoli It took a while to come. Pie and chips isn’t a difficult menu. The broccoli - four small stalks - was £2 extra. Memo to caterers - don’t be mean on small things people will notice. I don’t think we’ll be back any time soon.

Popped in at 11:30 and met with a great greeting and allowed to choose where we sat. Had a beef panini and a bacon and Brie. Great service, food hot and served quickly. Would have liked a bit more salad with mine rather than a few sprigs of rocket. Overall great time keep it up.

We booked our wedding here at the barns they have attached to the pub. Everything was amazing!! Laura and Kevin could not have done anymore for us. From start to finish they worked so hard to make our day special. The venue itself is so beautiful. All of our guests were talking about how delicious the food was. We opted for the buffet as our day was a very relaxed affair. The pricing was very good for all that was included. I just can't thank them enough for everything they did. We were lucky enough to have a good day weather wise. As the evening came they brought out the patio heaters which made it cosy.

The staff were really friendly, food was amazing. The ascetics are beautiful, especially the garden. Can't wait to visit again 🍻

Where do I start..... my daughter and now son in law had their wedding in the barns at the Hen and Chicken Laura Kev and team were and are AMAZING nothing was to much trouble food also AMAZING hot and plenty of it thank you doesn't seem enough but thank you all so much for helping the day go so smooth and perfect very much appreciated.

I have returned to the Hen and Chickens as my local has had the same menu for two years . Like the menu , like the ales like how it has improved. Sat watching the bands and had a pizza , very nice. Has a good atmosphere. Will be using more often.

The Hen and Chicken is a pub full of character. Added to that is the marvellous food on offer. We had a variety of dishes, each was excellent. My favourites were the garlic prawns starter and the salmon Teriyaki, which was beautifully moist and full of flavour. The service was excellent. Our waitress was helpful and extremely efficient. All in all it was a most enjoyable evening and we cannot wait to go back.

Good place to get lunch. Easy access off main road but that does make it very noisy on hot when windows are open.

I visited at lunchtime on a Monday, Sun was very hot outside so sat inside in the cool. Friendly smiley staff greeted us, said we can sit anywhere we wanted so chose a window seat with a nice breeze. Drinks were ordered and brought quickly. Food was ordered and a little while later arrived well cooked and presented, and a good portion. The atmosphere is of an older era and was pleasantly quiet, no blaring music or loud chatter which made it easy to talk to others in your group. All in all a lovely luncheon experience 😀.

Absolute gem. Such a warm welcome, very friendly Management and staff. It just got better with the extensive menu, so much choice. Between the three of us we had Scampi and scrumptious chunky chips, black pudding and poached egg, and salmon with noodles and teriyaki sauce. Each one of us enjoyed our meal, all were delicious. We sat outside in the sun but thankfully shaded too as it was particularly hot. A lovely afternoon out for my elderly parents. I would highly recommend this superb place. We'll be back 😊.

A great countryside pub Excellent food Sunday Roast. Service wonderful. both inside tables and outside.

Called in on the way back from Winchester science museum, we had a wonderful meal, the pan fried black pudding starter was delicious, lovely atmosphere quick service and reasonably priced.

Walked in to purchase a drink, with intention of having a meal but the female staff member that served us looked at as though we'd asked her to to commit a murder, as she walked behind to serve she stopped and was whispering to another staff member looking directly at us. It was rude and off putting. Training needed! Other staff were pleasant.

Good food. Went on a Friday, there was a curry buffet, but none of my party sampled it, we ordered from the menu (pub classics). Staff were friendly, it had a nice feel about the place. The only irritating part was that children permitted to run around.

Absolutely superb Trout in Toasted Almonds dressing service as one would accept from this First Class Pub Restaurant. M y friend had Burger which it would be unfair to comment because it contained one or two ingredients she did not like but commented on the meal as enjoyable. Speaking to the guy behind bar he informed me he had been at the Hen and Chicken for over 20 years so he must be doing something right. I gave 4 Stars on Atmosphere which is harsh but we arrived at 13.00hrs on a dreadfull rainy day so it was hard to judge. The food,..Beer and the overall interior are First Class at an acceptable price. I can recommend this Pub Restaurant outright.

Had a function here yesterday it was fantastic . Laura was brilliant to deal with from the start was always very responsive. Kev prepared an amazing BBQ. Would highly recommend this place.

Lovely food, chef rude! Everything perfect food wise and lovely waiting staff, however y9ur chef/server of the carvery needs a lesson in manners! Rude, blunt, and not accommodating, wouldn't change a slice of meat for a different one,as he had already plated it.. until I said we'll swap plates then. Ridiculous, and when customer infront asked him to slice the fresh joint and not the dry end, his reply was, it's all the same, no, no it isn't. No one wants a nobbly end of meat, made me feel like I was in school again, rude rude rude. Staff like that are enough to stop people revisiting. If I'm paying over £100 for my family to eat , I don't want to be made to feel I'm getting in the way or eyes rolled at me.

MY wife and I visited for an evening meal on a thursday which is advertised as 2 for 1 steak night and on looking at the bill we had mistakenly been charged the regular price, this was immediately put right after i mentioned it to the server but if i hadn't checked i would have just swiped my card and been none the wiser until my bank statement arrived "so beware" also the disabled toilet is the worst i have ever seen although it can be used it is in a dire state and requires refurbishing throughout

No fuss / unpretentious, good food, pleasant staff, very reasonably priced.

My partner and I got the pizza deal (two pizzas and two sides for £30) and although the pizzas were very nice the sides were ridiculously small (the bruschetta was about the size of a quarter of a baguette and the salad was so tiny). The puddings were nice but the brownie was very small for the price.

A good hostelry alongside the A31 .The food selection was good and nicely presented in a character building .It seems popular so reservation is advisable . The staff are helpful and friendly which adds to the enjoyment

Bit of a journey along the A31 when my ten year old needed the toilets. Pub was thankfully very accommodating and as such we returned for a fabulous and recommended curry night.

Cracking lunch. Their Pork Schnitzel could have been served in Köln. Lovely. And some wonderful Badger Beers.

The starter was nachos which was very good and more than enough to share, however the burger and chips was really small for the money. There was minimal meat in the burger with some extra filling, a handfull of chips no onion rings or anything to make ot a meal. This was around £16 which tbh was expensive for what it was. Such a shame we were disappointed because its such a nice pub, nice atmosphere and decor! The staff are lovely and before the dreadful burger and chips we discussed going back with family. And we would have recommended it to friends- Not now I'm afraid. I don't like feeling that I've been ripped off and that's how I felt ! 🤷‍♂️

Came on a Friday for the Curry buffet, very nice , good value and friendly staff.

A nice older style pubs. We were offered a warm welcome and the staff were friendly throughout. A choice of a carvery ( beef Turkey) which was nice or the main menu with a variety of dishes. All was reasonably price, Decent cask ales. A large free car park at the side, We can recommend and could not fault or visit

Pukka roast. Excellent place to stop on the way down (or up) the A30. Don't hesitate to stop.

Cannot recommend this pub enough! The carvery was so delicious followed by the most scrumptious puddings served by an amazing friendliest waitress- I believe it's a family run place and was so great to see how they all work so hard as a team together 🩷 You absolutely have to try this place! Can't wait to come again 5 stars from me 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Quality of food very poor, incredibly over priced and frankly can get better at a Wetherspoons but for half the price. Steaks were very disappointed in particular. Hen and Chicken are similar pricest to the Ivy in Winchester which is shocking!

Brilliant as always. Just the place to stop for a carvery and a glass of wine midway between London and the New Forest or vice versa. Very conveniently fitted us in for a table reserved for a later time. And we were gone before it was due

Nice place to have a drink and meal just outside Alton. Careful as you approach as the road layout can be confusing and on a busy day cars are parked on the verge outside. Delicious food that's fairly priced. Decent portion sizes. A roast is cheaper during the week.

The Hen and Chicken is a fantastic place to relax and have a meal. The food was fabulous. Great service -- friendly and kind -- and a great list of specials and desserts. Props to Ollie the chef -- he and the staff helped us with a difficult situation and really cares about the customers.
