We have just returned from one night and dinner at The Anchor and it was a wonderful stay. We stayed in The Signature Room With a View and it was gorgeous, I would post pictures but unfortunately for us it poured with rain the entire time and they wouldn't do it justice. The room was cosy warm, spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. The high ceiling, huge window and private balcony really do make it feel special. The bed was huge, very comfy and with the best pillows I've ever had in a hotel. It is very quiet at night and we did not hear anything from the adjoining occupied rooms. TV and WiFi both worked fine. There was an iron + board and a hairdryer in the wardrobe which was large enough for a couple of weeks worth of clothes. A selection of lovely teas and some coffee and they will bring proper milk up in a little flask. Also some biscuits and a couple of bottles of water. The bathroom was large with ample big fluffy towels, nice toiletries and a great big rainfall shower that worked well. My only tiny whinge would be to suggest disposable shower caps, rainfall showers are wonderful but it is difficult not to get your hair wet. Onto dinner and we had the scotch egg and Nduja croquettes to start, both were excellent. Mains were pie and the special which was monkfish tail on a seafood risotto. My husbands pie was delicious and packed full of steak but the monkfish and risotto was the star of the meal, perfectly cooked, incredibly tasty and the little bits of crispy squid were gorgeous! We finished up with the biscoff donuts and ice cream and a couple of coffees followed by several glasses of rum. I couldn't fault anything we ate, it was all very well cooked and delicious. Both slightly delicate in the morning after all that rum we both had the full English breakfast which was excellent and much needed, the black pudding was great, real butter for the toast and a properly grilled tomato, super tasty. The coffee was proper fresh bean-to-cup and much appreciated. Service throughout was lovely, efficient and friendly. I couldn't fault anyone we interacted with. We had a wonderful time, many thanks to Nadia and the whole team. We hope to come back when it is sunny!

Following an impromptu visit for a drink we were welcomed in by Lucy. Who promoted the rooms to us by showing us them. We then later revisited and stayed. Further visits were made over a few weeks to done. Each visit Lucy and the team were a massive credit to Butcombe. The pub is full of atmosphere and so are the rooms. The idiosyncrasies of an old building should be expected and added to the visit. We will be visiting again when we are next nearby and look forward to catching up with Lucy and her very friendly team.

The pub is a lovely old pub located in the countryside. Our room was comfortable with a couple of niggles. Firstly, it is an old building but there was quite a large gap underneath the room door. This gap let in quite a bit of light into the room overnight which disrupted our sleep. The outside hall light also flicked on and off all night. Secondly, the plug point by the bed didn't work which meant our mobile phones didn't charge overnight. However the bed was very comfortable and the shower was lovely in the morning. We had dinner in the pub which was nice but the dining chairs were very uncomfortable to sit on for a long time. The next morning we had breakfast at the tables which had sofa seats and it was a much more comfortable experience. Overall it was a nice stay for what we paid.

Had a lovely 2 night stay for a special birthday. The food and service was great. A really friendly and hard working team of staff. Julka looked after us in the main and was very efficient and attentive. Thankyou. We have been coming to The Anchor since its original re opening and major revamp as part of the Miller group many years ago and have always had a great experience. Times have been tough in hospitality since the pandemic and to survive and thrive is an achievement. The only noticeable difference on this visit is that some of the lovely pieces of furniture could do with some attention, as wear and tear has taken its toll. Ditto the curtains in our room. However, nothing to spoil our stay and it was also reassuring to know that the fire alarm system works well! Thanks to all.

Last night we attended a lovely 'Burns Supper' at the Anchor. The function room was laid out as a banqueting table. We were 'piped' into dinner by 'The Piper'. Tartan of all descriptions on show and even a couple of kilts, not bad for Hampshire, UK. The evening started with a Welcome, the Haggis was paraded behind the Piper and then ' a lovely Lady fa' Scotland 'Addressed the Haggis' in time honored form..The Falkirk Grace was said and into the lovely, well presented 3 cse meal. It was fantastic to share the evening with friends old and new. Now we look forward to next year. Have to thank Nadia and team for putting on a great evening. We popped into the Anchor Inn whilst on a circular walk from Bentley. It was a well-earned rest stop during our ramble. We hadn't booked to eat, although when we asked if we could, the staff were very accommodating, notifying us of what on their menu they were unable to serve due to being sold out. We chose the fish and chips and beef shin pie with vegetables. Both meals were good portions, beautifully cooked, and hot, the service was very pleasant, relaxed and friendly. The Inn has a warm country pub feel where walkers, dogs, and children were happily enjoying the atmosphere. We would be more than happy to return.

Very, very disappointed. Whatever must have happened for a place to get five star reviews six months ago in order to descend to the level of experience we had? Our visit was 27th December. Begin with the good. The staff were very helpful and a little embarrassed as they knew that we were probably not receiving food to a standard they’d probably seen previously served. Not the main, but a highly unusual circumstance to happen in a food and drink establishment, — having ordered a good bottle of well priced wine…they didn’t have a functioning corkscrew or bottle opener - the ONLY ONE they did have was broken. There are three in my kitchen and I’m not in the food and wine business!!! I had to work out how to extract the cork and serve myself. This in itself speaks volumes about what might be masquerading as Management behind the scenes. However, it is the quality of what was presented on plates in front of us that is the aim of my criticism. It was truly awful. I could and can if asked, only go into further detail but it would be damaging. Over 80% we left virtually untouched. Maybe because it was between Xmas and New Year they had staffing problems in the kitchen, but if that was the case then they would have been better served making excuses (problem with the cookers -no gas?) and not offering any food that evening. Whoever was working in that kitchen that night was either not trained or didn’t care, having no understanding of what was required. If all they were doing was re-heating then they also failed at that. A rapid rethink is required if this place is to get back on track of the reviews six months ago. Much pulling up of bootstraps, crucial re-training to some extent to bring the food to a more professional standard, particularly in the kitchen, and my recommendation would be to visit some of your competitors in a five mile radius in order to see the quality and determine the standards where you need to be. Overall this was an exceptionally poor experience bordering on unacceptable - and, I have to say, that we were warned just hours before we came by two local families who’d eaten there in the previous week. My criticism may sound harsh but is fully justified if any establishment chooses to present inedible unacceptable plates of food, at any price, to a clientele trusting previously good reviews. You made a slight reduction in the bill but that doesn’t make it right, - it wasn’t asked for. Your customers should walk away wanting to return, not making a mental note to avoid in the future.
