The Castle Inn in East Hampshire

Well arrived a little later than expected on Sunday 29th September, I surprised the parents who eat here regularly on Sundays for the roast. I had the beef roast with extra vegetables, service was excellent, great atmosphere, for pudding I had the treacle toffee pudding with ice cream. Mum and dad throughly enjoyed their meals as usual. Compliments to the chef and all the waiting staff Who provided a great service even though it was very busy. We have discussed as a family to come for a Christmas get together, we better get our skates on as they are very popular!!

The food was delicious, just a shame it took nearly 2 hours to arrive. Would be good on a quieter day I think

We visited here for Sunday lunch. We were a table of 7 adults and 5 kids , first people in the pub and last to leave. After every customer was served food before us including the kids who waited 2 hours for their lunch- not acceptable . price did not reflect the service or food. Staff did keep apologising but not coming up with any solutions , staff gave another table who had waited ages, a bag of mini cheddars to keep them going ! I made a comment that my 2 year old was really hungry which was met with a dirty look from a staff member. When food finally arrived , lamb was fatty, chicken was dry and tasted old, one order was forgotten and was still added to the bill. Will not be returning and nor should anyone else

A nice pub, with great features. Big garden and a cosy feel. It's worth a visit.

What a great find on a Sunday afternoon after travelling, a beautiful roast beef dinner and plenty of veg, desserts to die for and super dog friendly cannot wait to go back .

We had a lovely Sundsy roast. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because the lamb was a little fatty. My belly pork was spot on!

Lovely pub visited by chance. Great selection of ales. Great outside area. Restaurant seating in separate room from the bar. Very clean. The staff were lovely. We didn't eat but it smelt fab!

The food and staff where excellent. But we where putvomna table that was for two ,but another two table was a inch apart. May as well been pushed together as one . No privacy . Chairs uncomfortable . And 45 minute wait for the dinner. Meats would of been cooked and veg as it was 1 o'clock. And people where being served . To long . They put the prices up. Thats OK, but have had that price else where . In a plush hotel ,with three course and coffee. And better seating . Food was lovely . So positive negative seating and wait . Yes had to large wines

Popped in on a bike ride, nice pub, big garden, beer fine , friendly staff, never had food,hence only 3 stars, I will try the food as they don't have a service charge, well done

Pleasant sit in the pub garden on Father's Day with a drink. However, we were totally oblivious to the fact that we needed to register our vehicle and were not told by any member of staff when we ordered drinks. We have ended up with a £60 parking fee!! We had 14 days to appeal from date of issue and guess what...the letter turned up on the 14th day. We will not be returning. PLEASE BE AWARE IF YOU HAVE NOT VISITED THIS PUB BEFORE

Had Lunch with a business colleague today Very warm welcome from the Lovely Landlady and her smiley staff Nicely decorated restaurant area with laid back atmosphere Went for The Chicken and Bacon Caesar salad which was well prepared and presented by the Chef Andy This charming village pup is one not to miss for sure

Lovely Sunday roast but over priced compared to other village pubs,limited choice no atmosphere whatsoever, no allergies catered for

This was simply one of the best Sunday roast dinners we've ever had out, delicious quality food, served beautifully together with a fantastic, friendly service. Would definitely recommend and you definitely need to book because it's so good its also very popular!

Nice place to stop for a Pint but parked under sign saying for Patrons only.....2 weeks later been had by a £60 fine!!!! Landlady not interested....as long as she gets your money she doesn't care!! BEWARE...May look nice but has some horrible undertones!!!

Great small country pub with tasty food 😋

Went for Sunday roast yesterday 5/5/2024 I have to say the food was amazing Fantastic portion sizes, the best pub roasts I've had, the best for me was the food was piping hot well done all for a good meal cooked even though you were so busy.

Only popped in for a drink,beer was good,great choice of real ales, service was great, very friendly staff and locals didn't eat but the meals we saw looked very nice.will be back soon

Visited The Castle Inn today for a 'Ladies that Lunch' lunch. My friend and I enjoyed a relaxing few hours together. I had beef fajitas and my friend had sausages and mash. My friend enjoyed the sausages which were from Owetons. The food was superb, and beautifully presented. We were looked after by the landlady and made to feel very welcome. Would highly recommend a visit to The Castle Inn. Their menu is amazing and has a wide selection of food to choose from.

Thankyou so very much to landlady Sarah and her friendly and hard working serving team. My wife and I both had a quite fabulous Sunday lunch here today. It may indeed be one of the best pub Sunday roasts we have ever had. This is a well oiled team who know their business inside out, and the food is clearly prepared and cooked with love by a skilled chef who is evidently passionate about their trade. Very highly recommended.

Still 5 stars, been many times, never let's me down.

A friendly country pub in the traditional style. Bare tables, cutlery and paper napkins after order. A very busy venue with family and groups in and a high turnover. Large car park but have to remember to log in at the bar. Very friendly, attentive and helpful staff. Traditional pub grub very generously served. Limited wine list of medium quality. Fair priced lunch.

Was disappointed with the roast beef it was cold and my Yorkshire pudding was burnt to a cinder there was a lot of veg but it was fairly warm and the beef was barely cooked was looking so much for a roast the beef was so thick as well I did say about the meal being cold and put it under a grill when it came back it was still cold asked her about putting in the microwave and said the plate was too big the Yorkshire pudding should never had been put on the plate my partner dinner was the same I thought that they would had given us money off the meal

Amazing fresh food, lovely homely feel though out the pub I had the pie of the day, simply put amazing couldn't find any fault If you in the area and looking for proper pub grub done the right way this is the place

A scrumptious meal, served by happy people in a convivial atmosphere. Even a 2 course lunch offer on a Sunday was an unexpected treat. We shall return.

Parking scam in operation - avoid - no clear signs or warnings. Avoid at all costs - it was pretty average before but add the £100 parking fine - it’s dire

After coming to this pub for over 10 years, I have been lumped with a parking fine of £60 for buying beers at said pub, despite being under a sign ‘for patrons only’. This is due a new and covert permit system. Although within the landlady’s capacity to withdraw the charge, and after reaching out multiple times by phone and by person, the support needed has been actively ignored. Be wary of parking and having years of good relationship nullified. Left feeling robbed and disappointed after years of supporting a local business.

This place is the nicest pub I've been in so friendly and great place the owner is a lovely lady so down to earth

A nearby pub refused to let me charge my electric bike after a very long journey. Here was warm and welcoming with no problems over bringing my back in for a top up charge. A great variety of beers and feels like a real community pub. Thank you!

I’ve been coming here for years, always loved it, but I’m never going back. I went in there for a drink with my Dad. I didn’t see the signs in the carpark about having a permit, nor did I see any in the bar. A week later I received a £100 parking fine (£60 if paid straight away). I went into the pub, to ask them about it, and said I had not seen anywhere to put my registration in. The barmaid said it was in the restaurant side! I suggest the staff ask customers if they have parked in the car park, and point them towards registering their car. Sadly, I won’t know if they do, as I’m never going back.

Nice pub , great service . But locals made us feel very unwelcome . Will not be returning due to this. Was going to eat, but felt we could not stay 😩.

Pub was fine but I've just received a parking notice for £100 (£60 if paid earlier). This takes the cost of the visit to £120 for a couple of drinks each and we were there only an hour. I can see from the futility that "Sam" posted for a July incident, that no warnings are given for this by the pub staff - maybe in these difficult times, this business has enough income to put up with the potential reputational damage that this could have ?. I do understand that protecting the car parking is important but maybe install a gate and sign it at least ask at the bar "have you registered your car for parking?". Take a leaf out of the Harvester where there is a screen at the door to register for parking. Doubt we will go back again. Once bitte, twice shy

My friend and I both got fined for parking in the car park even though we spent money in the bar. Nobody told us that we needed to register the vehicle, even though we went up to the bar twice, we saw no signs and and we've been coming here for years and never had to do it before. Trying to get help from the staff was a waste of time as they didn't care and even with the evidence of receipts and bank statements, we still lost our appeals with the disgusting car parking rip off company. Not a great way to treat your customers.

Great we arrived very late in the day and the owner was very accomdating. Food was really good quality.

Ordered 2 sandwiches and 2 drinks. After 35 minutes I asked about the food and was told bluntly “it will be ready when it’s ready” not once but twice. I would have understood if it was busy that it may be a bit of a wait but we were the only people in the Beer garden and the tables in the bar were empty. Sandwiches were ok but the chips were over cooked and no apologies for for the delay or rudeness. Sadly I would not recommend

We went tonight as we was in the area fantastic food great service from the waitress mega mixed grill was huge and worth the money and my partner had chicken pasta with bacon which was huge well worth the money will return soon .

Top afternoon at this lovely pub located in the centre of Bungay. Great service from Olivia throughout and lovely charming old English atmosphere.

A lovely pub with a nice location and beer garden. The staff was nice and friendly. The food was nice apart from the meat but I am guessing it was just a bad cut as the rest of the food was lovely. When we spoke to the staff about the meal they dealt with the problem perfectly so I can't fault or mark down for the one problem. This is definitely a place to visit and I will visit again..

When we are staying in the area this is one of the pubs we always make an effort to visit. The food is always delicious and freshly cooked and the helpings are a very good size indeed. The landlady is lovely to our dog. On this latest visit it was raining so we sat inside and engaged with some of the locals at the bar. However, when the weather permits we opt for the charming garden.

We went to the Castle Inn for my mum's 70ths on Sunday and there were 12 of us. The food was amazing and deliciously hot. The staff were friendly and welcoming and made our visit really special. Nothing was too much trouble. We will definitely be returning for the amazing roast shortly. Thank you to all the team.

Absolutely fantastic, traditional old pub. I would recommend this venue all day long. You would definitely not leave hungry and dissatisfied with your meal. Give it a go!!! Great staff and Sarah is the best.

Proper pub, great welcome and superb food at real pub prices.

Will never go again or recommend to anyone., after going for lunch there 2 weeks ago. Have just received a £100 penalty notice for parking at rear of pub. Notices said this was customer car park. Turns out after phoning the Castle Inn, that we should have registered our car once inside. No-one mentioned this and there was no apology from Castle Inn, just that we would have to go through an appeal process-no guarantee we will be successful.

I ordered a takeaway roast from here, just to try somewhere new. Big mistake, the pork and beef were so tough and over done, with more fat then meat. The roast were so dry they crumbled, one Yorkshire was not cooked and the other burnt, they didn’t have the pudding I wanted but instead of calling me they let the delivery driver tell me, which isn’t a high issue but the cheesecake was the smallest portions I have ever had. All of that for £45 and what a waste of money. Honestly the worst roast I have ever had and pudding was nice but so small for the cost, I would have been better not paying for a pudding at all.

Another delicious Sunday dinner at the Castle Inn, everything was so tasty, roast beef was cooked perfectly followed a nice fruit crumble. I’d almost go to say it’s the best Sunday dinner in the area.

Not the warmest of welcomes for new customers... no atmosphere.. no seats in the bar... empty restaurant.. did get to go in and sit in there with our drinks...

Never had a bad meal in here , the clientele are friendly and the dog friendly public bar is always full of friendly fur babies There is plenty of outside space with tables front and back The landlady is hardworking and accommodating and the beer...

This appears to be a locals pub, food was OK but dinning area really needs a skip to take away all the chairs and tables felt like we were in a greasy spoon and there was a smell of fat. Staff performance was not really friendly felt they did not care. Won't be returning any time soon.
