Well, what can I say? We didn’t want to leave. We booked for two & Sunday roast. Easy booking the old fashioned way by ringing a few days before. Charming young lady eager to book us in on the phone. Had a drink at the bar before being seated & the bar men were amazing. As for the food!!!!! Wow, we both had the Sussex Sirloin (would have been nice to have had lamb or pork on the menu) but we were very happy with our choice. Slightly pink beef cooked perfectly; roast potatoes fluffy & delicious; veg not over cooked & gravy to die for. My Partner had Affogato to finish with a dram of Amaretto & I had an Irish coffee. Fabulous food, comfortable & beautiful setting & decor & the service was above & beyond! Thank you Richard Hayward and your amazing team! Will definitely be back…….lots!!! X

Went for Sunday lunch. It used to be terrible but then got good. Unfortunately back to terrible. The beef on the roast beef lunch was inedible gristle. The puffed scampi starter inedible. When I say inedible I don’t mean bad I mean not fit for human consumption. Beer was good though. Go in the summer for a drink but avoid food.

We had our wedding reception at the bat and ball on Thursday 31st October 24 in the evening, it was a truly excellent experience, we had a wedding breakfast which was a Buffett prepared exceptionally by the chef at the bat and ball, the bar staff couldn’t do enough for everyone nothing was too much trouble, we had a DJ in one are where the table and chairs were moved so we could have a dance floor which worked very well, we had the whole pub so we also got the court yard which was lovely restaurant, bar and seating area outside where the staff lit fire pits so we could toast marshmallows which the kids and adults loved, this made our wedding day truly memorable, we would recommend the bat and ball for future couple to hold their wedding. We would like to thank Caroline, Richard, Dan and the staff for all their hard work

Had a good look for a pub that was halfway for us and our friend to meet in. The Bat And Ball fulfilled that criteria. As it was a Sunday we new it would be mainly roasts. We all ordered a roast. And what a disappointment it was.It said slow cooked pork belly. We got very fatty tough pork with no crackling . we called a member of staff over and he said, well there is gravy all over it. Yes we said, we did not put gravy on it the chef must have. If my mum was with us, she would have sent it back as she is not a fan. Why do you assume everyone wants a half pint of gravy on there plate. We called him back about the tough meat and fat. He said he would ask the chef. He came back and said, you know pork belly has a lot of fat in it. To say that to three people in there sixty's who have cooked most of our lives is an insult. I have cooked it countless times, its not rocket science. We struggled though it only to realize, we had no burnt apple sauce....too late now. i had one sliver of carrot, one slither of parsnip and a spoon of savoy cabbage, a Yorkshire pudding. Not great for £19. no attempt to rectify it. Oh sorry they brought out some more crackling, but we had eaten what we could by then. The Cauliflower as near as raw as you could get. Very disappointing. Still feeling hungry, we asked for the pudding menu, but at £10 and £11 pounds, you must be joking. Puddings as that price has crossed the line. We paid the bill that had not been adjusted to reflect our disappointing meal. We will not be going back. See photo for fatty tough pork.

After a lovely walk nearby we had booked a lunch here, really looking forward to a nice roast dinner ! The staff were friendly and welcoming the ambience warm, sadly that was the best part. Two of us chose the slow roasted pork belly with crackling and apple sauce, we added cauliflower cheese as extra. Our meals came out in record time, covered in gravy !! The crackling was soggy and inedible, the fat on the pork was not meltingly soft, it was also inedible, the meat itself was very chewy indeed. The veg was ‘ok’ but way too undercooked sadly. The cauliflower cheese sauce was rich and delicious but the cauliflower was barely cooked we could hardly cut it. And no apple sauce to be seen !We informed our waiter of all our quibbles, he said well of course once gravy hits the crackling it will go soggy !!! We said well it came like that !! Off he went and returned with a dish of crackling and said the kitchen had said ‘pork belly is fatty’ YES ! We eat it a lot but slow cooked it melts into itself and is tasty and tender to eat ! We asked about the missing apple sauce so he said oh didn’t you get any ? So we said no we didn’t, off he went, returning just as we were finishing what was edible, would we like apple sauce ? Not now !! We did ‘look’ at the dessert menu ! £10 each crikey !!! My glass of Chardonnay was £11 !!! We opted to finish with a tea and coffee. There was no reflection of our disappointing meal on our bill. I absolutely hate having to complain, it ruins the treat of going out to lunch/dinner which by the way was not cheap ! I never mind paying the price if the quality is good, It wasn’t, sadly.

Service was very good, friendly and polite. Our starters were ok. We both had the beef pasta, for our second course. The beef was tough. The ‘ parmesan’ was tasteless. They took a small amount off the bill. But the price of drinks was excessive. It was an anniversary celebration in a lovely candlelit setting. However …..we will not be returning in the near future.

I haven’t been to the Bat & Ball for a while so decided to take my mum for lunch. We sat outside in the courtyard which was nice as you got the heat but without being sat in the sun. The chairs are a little low to the table though! We both had the ‘fat chook’ chicken parmigiana which was nice and came with a nice tomato salad and a large portion of sweet potato fries. It tasted lovely! However the blonde girl that brought our food over looked miserable… we asked for sauce and cutlery which she never brought over. We were sat a few mins assuming she was coming back when another waitress (Jess G) noticed we had no cutlery and came straight back with it. Dessert was fantastic though and Jess G was brilliant! Really lovely and very helpful!

Not a great menu. No fish offered other than batter-heavy haddock and chips (£19!), and seafood. Dressed crab rather small. All a bit over the price I would expect to pay. Especially the drinks - gin and tonic priced separately!? Coffee was overpriced for what you got - the macchiato was miniscule! And the sugar was in large lumps. I was forced into trying to carve a bit off with knife! My third time there. Definitely going downhill a bit. Shan't be returning. Better food and better value elsewhere.

Beautiful garden, lovely olde worlde pub inside. Friendly staff. Good service. Basically that's the best parts. Good choice of drinks but very pricey. £7.50 for a small glass of rosé... Food menu is typical of any gastro pub. However, for the quantity and quality of the food the prices are somewhat extortionate. I had the battered haddock and chips. An average sized portion of haddock which, once past the vast crunchy batter, was very tasty. I personally didn't enjoy the chunky chips (far too dry) the curry sauce was tasty but being served in an open dish didn't retain it's heat, big dollop of tartare sauce on the plate and no peas or salad for £19! Left feeling quite disappointed ☹️ as had heard good things about this place which didn't come to fruition on the night.

The pub and restaurant itself looks lovely and has a cosy feel. On arriving at the restaurant I had to go to the bar staff to ask if I could have a table outside and some menus. At this moment in time the bar staff were talking and swearing at each other. Not ideal. Our waitress was helpful with the menu, although it's a very small menu she advised me that the chips were gluten free. I ordered a gluten free burger and exchanged the chips for potatos. On our meals being delivered, I'd a few bites then noticed that mine had crispy fried bits in my food. This was fried onions?! This made me ill at once, I have a dietary requirement that I cannot eat gluten. They brought me out another burger however I couldn't eat it due to being unwell. Also, the new burger came out with different sauce, did the sauce before contain gluten too??? I feel sorry for our lovely waitress who had to apologise, whilst the chefs hid in the kitchen. Avoid if you have dietary requirements

Wonderful Wedding Venue. We couldn't have chosen a better venue for our small and intimate wedding party of 45 guests. From the minute we made an events enquiry to our final farewells, our wedding reception was perfectly catered for and professionally executed. Amanda ensured that all dietary requirements were catered for, our menu was thoughtfully planned and our day was smoothly run. The food was amazing! From the canapes to the petit fours, food was faultless - not only delicious, but perfectly presented. The venue itself is modern and comfortable, bright and airy - perfect for any event. Indeed, Haywards exceeded our expectations (which were very high to begin with!) and I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Ordered roast beef-no fat -served with fat and overcooked. Plates were cold - if you serve hot food you put it on hot plates! After we had been served with the roasts server asked if we would like sauces - yes horseradish and mustard but they took 5 minutes to arrive. Veg were lukewarm. Ice cream was ordered and guess what it was served in a glass that had two crack on it - not noticed by the server. Crumble was lukewarm. We would not recommend or go back. Everything is more expensive now, crazy so, please don't make it worse. One of the team said sorry he must have charged for a different rose, but come on, I said house! Grubby and becoming somewhat tired. I’ve been visiting the Bat & Ball since it was revamped 8yrs ago. I’m not a ‘regular’ but perhaps go there 2-3 times a year. The shine really has begun to rub off and my most recent visit was extremely disappointing, save for the food, which continues to be excellent. Our table was filthy, cutlery dirty and glasses didn’t look like they had even attempted to wash. I did ask the waiting staff to make good. If you’re a dog lover, then you’ll be happy as you’ll be able to enjoy other people’s dog hairs which can be found on the seating and ultimately your clothes. I note that the most recent hygiene rating is 4/l out of 5 with ‘confidence in management’ awarded a ‘generally satisfactory’. It seems I’m not the only one to believe there’s room for improvement in how things are run at the Bat & Ball! The venue needs a thorough clean. I really hope management take this on board as this used to be a fantastic all rounder but in my opinion has since fallen from grace.

We had the most amazing experience at Hayward’s this weekend. I booked the dinner and accommodation package for my husbands birthday months ago. Since booking, I have had to go on a strict diet for medical reasons. I contacted Hayward’s and they went above and beyond what I had expected by creating a fully bespoke menu for myself, meaning I didn’t miss out on anything and you would never have known the food had been adapted. My husbands food was incredible as well. The service on the night was impeccable, our glasses were never empty and little touches such as the waitress’s ensuring the tables were clean after each course did not go unnoticed. Good food and nice atmosphere. We had the tasting menu - loved the cauliflower cheese consomme! Service was a little slow, especially early in the meal; I expect they were catching up as apparently there was a large party earlier.

This pub is remarkably popular, evinced by the full-to-overflowing car park and occupied tables on a weekday. If furnished with a more imaginative lunch menu; a first-class chef; excellent beer; more serving staff; improved road directions and a change of name (there are at least...

We’ve been coming to Haywards for almost ten years now and despite many changes to staff in the kitchen and front of house the standards have never dropped. Under the guidance of owners Amanda and Jahdre they have still manage to produce amazing food with friendly and professional service. Our latest visit was Saturday lunchtime where on arrival we received a lovely welcome from Amanda before she escorted us to our customary table 10. After a little catch up she told us that Jahdre had created for us a special menu that would showcase all the new dishes on the menu. This was a fabulous gesture and one we gladly accepted. We started with homemade Granary Sourdough bread and a selection of snacks including a cauliflower cheese veloute , harissa arancini , goat’s cheese and tomato canneloni. This led us to out first course a Chicken and Ham Hock Terrine with celeriac remoulade , toasted brioche and a homemade piccalilli. This was followed by the Fillet of Pollock with a crab bisque , hispi cabbage. and parsnips. Both dishes were an absolute delight and the flavours complimented each other perfectly. Amanda paired the courses with a Framingham 2021 Riesling from New Zealand. We now moved onto the main course which was a heavenly and rich Braised Pork Cheek with a white bean cassoulet and gremolata topped with a piece of pork crackling. This was paired with a Grand Garant 2020 Fleurie from France. We decided to follow this with a Cheese Course. We then finished with dessert which was a Chocolate Mousse with mascarpone sorbet , coffee cremaux and lime gel a twist on a tiramisu. The pairing for this dessert was a beautiful Australian Muscat from the Rosewood Vineyards that tasted like a light pedro ximinez. Apparently we wasn’t finished there as chef Jahdre sent out an Orange Soufflé with grand marnier caramel and cinnamon ice cream. This was a delight and the flavour combinations worked perfectly together. A coffee and petit fours brought to an end another fabulous dining experience at Haywards with fantastic food , perfect wine pairings and great service. If i ever needed another reason why i think this is the best restaurant in Essex then today’s visit did everything to enhance that. Looking forward to many more visits this year which will at some point include our 150th. Thank You Amanda and Jahdre for a fantastic lunch and look forward to seeing you again soon.

Food was very good but the reason for only average rating is because of the service. We arrived on time and our drinks order was taken fairly promptly and then we were left for ages before someone came to take our food order. Two of...

An amazing meal. Not been here for a couple of years. We used to have the tasting menu but this time decided on the a la carte. It was amazing. All the dishes were faultless & there were about 4 different amuse bouches, a pre dessert & petit fours with the coffee. And the sour dough is wonderful. A very memorable evening. I just can't understand how they don't have a Michelin star. Update: had another stunning meal at Haywards last night. Superb!

Tried haywards for the first time last night, the food and service was amazing. Every dish was cooked to perfection. We had the taster menu, even my slightly fussy 14 year old daughter cleaned her plate on every single course and described the food as stunning. Service was spot on, very attentive but not intrusive at all. We will definitely return.

Came for a tasting menu with wine pairing and had a thoroughly amazing night. All six courses were perfectly seasoned and delicate. The fish course that night was superb. Having had quite a few tasting menus in restaurants that already have Michelin stars, I can safely say this place, the staff (Amanda! you are amazing) and the chef have what it takes. We were taken care of from start to finish and I won't forget the experience. All the best and we will be back!!

Whilst others may enjoy it, this was a disappointing experience for us. It took 1 hour and 40 minutes from arrival to get our main and 2 and a half hours to finish what was 2 courses plus a few bits they serve between courses. The restaurant was only 50% full so perhaps making it into a long evening is part of the experience, but for us its just to long. They are trying to create a more classic fine dining atmosphere, but we didn't think the food was up to it. A crab salad starter compressed into a mould would have been very nice but for the fact they poured a 100ml of juice into the bowl which caused the thing to break up and turn into a sort of soup with salad and crab bits floating around. Perhaps it was considered part of a fine dining experience but it wasn't and it was not good. Venson was ok but not special and friends duck was delivered in chunks rather than classic slices which put them off a little. Side dishes were bowls of vegetables comprising of broccoli, carrats and potatoes. We can understand the point about local veg and saving miles etc., but surely a fine dining chef could make more of them than serving them as if they had been simply boiled up. Fine dining usually means small portions of nicely cooked food, so when you get 2 small slices of venison you really want to square the meal off with some lovely veg. Not the case here sadly. The staff in front of house tried very hard and were great but I think they were let down by what came from the kitchen and how long it took to get it out of the kitchen.

The Bluebell is such a great pub. Great location, indoor and outdoor seating, great food and the staff are always really friendly. They are great with allergies and know everything that's in their dishes. The serving staff are always happy to check with the kitchen and make small tweaks to dishes to accommodate.

Have visited a couple of times but was pretty disappointed with my most recent visit. We were not greeted as we came in and it took a while for someone to even notice we had set down despite greeting and serving customers who arrived after us. We then ordered the sausage ciabatta which I’d have to say is one of the worst sausage sandwiches I’ve ever had, the sausages had absolutely no flavour at all and did not taste like real sausages. This is a real disappointment as they are not cheap sandwiches. Am not sure that I will visit again as I was so disappointed.
