Always lovely food and a warm welcome, we come almost every week for coffee and treats. Such good pastries and bread. Dog friendly.

Always make time for a stop over at Haxby Bakehouse. Their bread is amazing whether it’s pain de levian sourdough or focaccia, their sandwiches are to die for and their freshly baked pastries cannot be beaten. They also stock a large variety of independent and top quality pastas, oils, pantry staples and beautiful Spanish crockery. Plus, their cafe is dog friendly. Every woofer I have come across there is very well behaved, and so are their humans. All of their staff make everyone feel very welcome, humans and hounds in equal measure. It’s great actually to see that many places now in Haxby are dog friendly; a stop over at Haxby Bakehouse for a coffee and pastry, bread for home plus a treat for the woofer…we’ll be back.

Tina the owner is rude and her hygiene is horrendous. Itching her face, handling money, messing with her hair AND then she touches the fresh food / cakes / breads with no gloves on. She clearly thinks she’s the queen bee of the community and I would have enjoyed my coffee more if I hadn’t of had to listen to her bitch and moan to other colleagues about other people. Constantly! Nice bread. Not so nice owner.

Just been here for fresh focaccia… delicious. My favourite shop in Haxby and I don’t live there. The pork pies are to die for and the sourdough is always top notch. I love it that it sticks little delicacies that you won’t find easily. The service for me has always been friendly and on point

This is an appreciation post for the great customer service I receive whenever I visit Haxby Bakehouse - today was no exception. I bought a selection of GORGEOUS Pastries to be eaten the next morning at a celebration breakfast - the service given was very efficient yet attentive and included top tips on how to store the Pastries to maximise freshness and maintain the crispness of the pastry - I am so grateful for this advice which was presented to me in such a polite and informative manner. (I would definitely have stored them in the fridge!). I love visiting Haxby Bakehouse - a visit definitely brightens up my day.

You wont find better bread in my opinion. Can the service be brusk on occasion, sure, but then they could throw it me for all i care (not that they have or would 🤣) because the standards are high, the ethics are spot on and the ingredients are local whenever possible. These guys source many good cafes and restaurants and theres a reason for that. Bread warriors standup this is your tribe.😊

I had inadvertently found myself in Haxby and took the opportunity to pop in (when in Rome etc...) having heard only positive things about the place from others including from other cafe owners. I had only popped in for a coffee and those who know me can attest to the fact that I am incredibly picky about my coffee. I was very impressed with their blend, especially given it comes from a local roastery. There was a lovely array of patisseries too which I couldn't resit! Moreover, I had a lovely chat with Tina and Michelle who told me more about the history of the shop and gave me a really in-depth understanding of all the different (and many!) products they sell. It was refreshing to hear from people who are so passionate about what they do and this was evident in everything they do. What happened next, surprised me. I was presented with two big bags of goods for me to take home with me and try. I had been having a challenging few weeks with different personal issues, but this simple and unexpected act of kindness blew me away. I had never considered myself particularly fussy about bread, but now having tasted the gold standard, I have every reason to be. I had an overwhelmingly positive experience and am already planning on when I can go back- I encourage you to do the same!

We had driven over from the other side of York to find this place, having had some of their sourdough in a very nice cafe, the Pig and Pastry ( where the staff are really friendly and the food is amazing). But were met with the most unpleasant, rude woman I have met in quite some time, it was clear we had to hurry up and get out of the place so she could have a good chat with the locals, the difference in her manner was quite astonishing. I can't really comment on the bread, as we were not served what we asked for, and left with some german number that could have served as a house brick instead of the sourdough we had asked for. But the harridan need not be concerned as we will not be back!

The beauty of the shop alone is enough to lift my spirits. My husband and me make a special trip each week just to stare at the exquisite range of baked goods. Not only hands down the best bread I’ve ever tasted - so freshly moist it’s almost damp with the most beautiful texture - but also a stunning range of cakes and pastries. The smell of the bread, mixed with the gourmet cheeses and beautiful coffee is worth the trip alone. My husband discovered it - he said you must come and see this shop. I did and that was three years ago and we will never buy bread anywhere else. Utter rubbish about the “rude” service. It’s friendly and engaged. The people commenting on here should try buying bread in Paris. Great bakers have earned the right to be difficult in my view. But for the record these great bakers are not.

Outstanding service and amazing food, what more could you ask for? The best thing about moving to Haxby, is that I get to visit this bakery on a daily basis! They’re so friendly with our two doggos :) the shop also has so many goodies, sources from small independent companies. Definitely one to visit if you can :)

What can I say? The Haxby Bakehouse is without a doubt one of my favourite places to visit. Not only in Haxby, but in the whole of York. In fact, it’s pretty much the best bread I’ve eaten in the UK. My partner and I pop in for lunch almost daily and since my first visit 3 years ago, it has always been a warm welcome. Since re-opening following the first lockdown, we have continued to support this local business and have happily waited outside since the governments ‘maximum of two customers’ rule was put in place due to the small size of the customer area, sometimes waiting as long as 15 minutes on busy days. However, we have noticed that since around June 2020, there has been quite a bit of hostile/rude behaviour from some visiting customers, regardless of everyone being respectful to one another’s personal space, to which my partner and I have often hung our heads in shame of the manners of some people. Today brought a new low after a woman walked in and refused to wait outside the shop “Because it was cold”. She was asked politely by a member of staff upon entry, but said she would just wait inside the shop as it was cold outside. The member of staff simply said “I’m sorry, but it’s the rules of social distancing and you’ll just have to wait until the next customer leaves”. To which the customer huffed and asked if I was leaving whilst standing in front of the door. Normally, I would be a gentleman and leave the shop and if the next customer had accidentally walked in not realising, I would give them right of way and leave. However, due to how rude she had been, I simply said “Yes, I am leaving, but you step outside and let me out as it’s two customers at a time”. As I walked out, the woman then said “Go on, shift out of my way”. As she stormed into the shop. Standing at the door, I told her that she needs to have some manners and shouldn’t be so rude to people. She then told me to “Shut up and stop carrying on”. I shook my head and left. I just wanted to get this off my chest, and if the lady in question should read this, you really should start using some manners, it costs nothing. Please everyone, it’s crappy for everyone at the moment. But don’t take it out on each other, and have some respect for your local businesses and the staff/owners who run them. They’re doing everything they can to keep things moving, to keep you safe and to provide you with quality produce. If you have to wait outside for a few minutes, then do so with patience, if you’re cold or in a hurry, there is a Co-op who don’t seem to have a care in the world about your well-being just 30 seconds walk away. Celebrate your locals. Don’t be rude.

Myself and many other people I know have experienced your staff being consistently dismissive and rude, unless they are serving and chatting to people they know. I thought I would give you one more chance but today left me shocked and upset again... Your coronavirus rule following is not to be faulted like any shop, however today there was a freezing wind with a very long wait while your staff chatted to their regulars unnecessarily lengthening waiting times . I thought if I wrote directly to you, you would listen to myself and what other people are saying about your staffs' attitude but it sounds like you yourself cannot or don't want to see this. I will vote with my feet.

Hemos comido pan Haxby Bakehouse en varios cafés de York, y siempre es delicioso. Vino de York para probar la selección de pastelería. Compramos 4 pasteles diferentes y me decepcionó.

I called there early on Christmas Eve to see if I could get some bread. A lady was staring at me when I got out of my car and when I went in and asked it they were open - got told no and the door was slammed behind me. If you turn up early here on a Saturday morning expect to get told to go away and be shouted out. They were not ready to open as advertised and were rude and unfriendly. The other customers and their van driver just shrugged and said it always happens & it's a good job they make good bread. For me, the quality of the bread didn't compensate for being treated like an unwelcome irritant. I have now switched to getting my bread from Bluebird in York & Malton - just as good and they served me with a smile.

Brilliant bread, that would be enough for a review, but I'd like to counter some of the comments about poor service/attitude. Absolute rubbish. Don't behave like a spoiled brat and you won't be treated like one, might be the motto of these no nonsense ladies and gents. They're not there to serve you. They're there to make the best bread in York (and probably further afield) and if you want it, you buy it. Count the number of people here who have wheat tattoos and you'll get some idea of how much this means to them.

The place seems to be run to suit the staff and not the customers. Supposed to open at 8.30 on a Sat. Not this week. They had a big order. Beyond passive aggressive. Took great pleasure bordering on sadistic in telling me and others they would not be serving for at least another 20 mins. I work in a client facing role. If you know you’ve got a big order perhaps plan ahead?

A good back street pub, with some very good real ciders, including the excellent Dudda's Tun Bone Dry. No food except Sunday dinners. Used to be 5 stars from me, down to 4 now they force drinkers to listen to blaring muzac. Perhaps I should take to bringing earplugs

From arrival, to breakfast, to departure all the staff were friendly and very helpful. The only negative was our room was very small and was starting to show signs of age ( loose fitting, wardrobe doors hard to close and lots of paint chips and marks on the walls). The room was however spotless and the bed very comfortable. As others have stated, the room did get very warm even for December but once the radiator was turned down, all was well. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice and excellent service. We will stay again but probably avoid summer stays unless air conditioning is installed during a hotel refurb.

The Exhibition is a grand old pub dating from 1702 that is situated on a very busy junction opposite Bootham Bar in York. As you enter up the steep couple of steps you are greeted by dark and atmospheric front room which is split by the central bar, it's a mish mash of Victorian and Art Deco with every single bit of wall space occupied with old photos, paintings, brasses and other Breweriana. There are wood panels, glowing yellow lighting and rich dark red ceiling which envelops you into the cosy space. There's so much to take in, especially the Art Deco stained glass panels and large fireplace, you'd almost be distracted from the offerings behind the bar. Which are not the most exciting but there's at least usually a couple of beers from Brew York, Black Sheep and Timothy Taylors, all priced at the usual City centre prices. Where The Exhibition really excels is it's outside space, if you follow your way around to the back of the bar and down a fairy light lit corridor it opens out first into a large conservator which is used for group bookings and then out into what is clearly the biggest and best Beer Garden in York! A beautifully secluded long yard with mature plants and great vintage wall art throughout. The only slight let down is the rather Victorian toilets which could probably do with a bit of an update but otherwise this is a very much overlooked pub that is superb in Summer and would be nice and welcoming inside any time of the year.
