Hat Bistro in Bristol, City of

We were unfortunate enough to be served by a less than friendly woman. Cold, sharp and unwelcoming. Beer is £6 for small bottle of beer, even by today’s standards, is an absolute joke. I was recommended the moussaka, which seemed like a safe choice for a greek restaurant. It was very disappointing and tasteless, dry meat and zero options to make it vegetarian. My friend ordered the seafood pasta and it was served with frozen seafood, clumped together pasta, dry, waaaaay too spicy (probably to make up for lack of taste) and probably the worst pasta I have eaten. The only thing that was fine, was the vine leaves starter. Quality, price, taste this was a very disappointing dinning experience and personally won’t be eating here again. Especially considering all the other options in Bristol.

Visited last weekend, what a hidden gem. Absolutely incredible food. Staff went above and beyond, from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. I cant recommend this place enough, it felt like i was transported to Greece for the evening.

A very pleasant place, quite cosy. We really enjoyed our dinner and wine. We thought service was quite slow, almost an hour from ordering to service. We were off to the O2 so I suppose we should have asked for what would be quick. Very enjoyable, though, and wished we had more time for dessert!

Excellent food and service most welcoming

We tried a few months ago for lunch on a Saturday at this restaurant,as my son had seen some good reviews, but they were closed. So on finishing work early we met to try again,admittedly it was a Thursday lunch time at 1.30, but as it states the restaurant is opened until 3pm,it should have been fine. As soon as we entered we should have walked out, the lady looked irritated and she went to ask chef if it was ok to serve us, after saying we could eat my son and I decided just to have light bites and sides. As we felt we were unwelcome. The lady serving lacked any customer service ability and I felt we paid for a total lack of service. Maybe we were unlucky, but its such ashame we should come away feeling it was a waste of time and money. We went somewhere else for pudding and coffee. Please remember good service is very important.

Disappointed by not a single vegetarian option on the mains. When I asked if they could offer a veggie main (as mains came with rice/chips, salad and pitta) very politely, smiling, I was met with a face of thunder and rudely barked "no they are meat dishes they are not vegetarian" she then laughed at me as if I was a complete lunatic for asking such a crazy question and then pointed out the salad in the most sarcastic tone. I found it humiliating in a small restaurant with other diners present, it ruined my eating out evening. This is not the friendly service others have raved about . My fault for not checking menu beforehand but in 2024, you'd expect at least one veggie main or a willingness to accommodate. Totally regret going here.

Amazing!! The best meal of the whole trip. It's not fancy, it is a bistro but the food is utterly divine. Staff are super friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend.

I had a lovely time before a music concert, as the food was freshly made in the kitchen nice and hot. The starters were exquisite and the waitress was very nice and polite. I had the best fries in the world and the juiciest pork ever, and I had complimentary sweets with the bill. My overall rating is 11/10

Went here for father's day meal in the evening. I found it to be the best greek restaurant on trip advisor. Friendly staff. Small restaurant so you need to book. Small menu but had enough choice to chose from. No kids menu but they were able to make any dish smaller for the kids. We had the nice pitta breads with humus. I had the brizolakia which was delicious and my husband had the kleftiko which he loved. My 2 kids had the tomato pasta. Definitely recommend

Perfect dinner before a concert at the Bristol Beacon. Didn't book, but we were lucky to get the last table. Food, drinks and hospitality are absolutely amazing. We will be back and we will be telling others. Though not that many that we can't get a table again. Felt like we were in a restaurant in greece.

Amazing independent Greek restaurant in the city. It’s a must for anyone. You must book to avoid being disappointed. Perfect for early dinner before the theatre, but you really don’t need an excuse to just go and eat here. The walnut cake is to die for. The mezze dips are perfection and the wines, oh the wines. Amazing!!!

Myself and fiance had an overnight stay in Bristol and booked up a meal here. We decided to go greek as that is where we will having out honeymoon. Have to say from the moment we arrived we were greeted with a very warm welcome. The manager went through all the menu and drinks with us. I opted for moussaka and my finance kleftico which were superb. Fantastic experience and thank you all. So if you are looking for great food and service look no further😍

Visited on May the 29th for pre-theater dinner this was my first visit and it did not disappoint! The T-bone stake was absolutely fantastic the service was fast and friendly too. Will definitely be visiting again the next time I am at the Hippodrome. 10/10

Overall we had a nice evening here. Be careful about complaining about the food though. We mentioned that the hummus was tasteless and watery and were promptly approached by the chef who objected massively to our feedback and was very defensive about her home made hummus! The service was good and the chicken souvlaki was lovely.

For our anniversary, my wife and I ventured to Hat Bistro, a family-run gem that stole our hearts (and taste buds!). From the moment we walked in, the warmth and hospitality were undeniable. Our waitress was an absolute star, guiding us through the menu with genuine enthusiasm and attentiveness. Food mediocre, had no Greek food available Kleftiko and Mousakka which is what we really wanted. The dips were not very tasty the best things were the Olives and Mythos lager.

Nice to see an independent Greek restaurant and Hat would be ideally located if you were visiting the Beacon. It feels like an actual Greek restaurant, rather than a chain caricature. The food was alright, but the Brizolakia (£17.95) was rather overcooked and for £11.65 we were expecting a much bigger, better Greek Salad. Perhaps we caught them on an off night.

I ate here a couple of years ago whilst in Bristol and had a great meal. I wasn't sure if I'd be able to find it again, but I eventually recognised the street and once again had a lovely meal. Highly recommended.

Four of us had booked early as we were going on to the Slapstick Gala at the Beacon. Two people chose the sharing meat platter, and they did warn us it would take 40 minutes to prepare, which was fine. We had olives, stuffed vine leaves, and pita bread to keep us going. All the main courses were delicious, fresh tasting, and well worth waiting for. Washed down with a very nice bottle of red wine that had been recommended. Time was getting on, but they also managed to take an order for 3 deserts and a coffee that were quickly delivered to our table so we wouldn't be late! Very impressed. The following morning, I checked the bill and found that we had not been charged for the wine. We do not live locally, but it's a family business, and we had so thoroughly enjoyed our meals, so I did the honest thing and phoned up and offered to pay. The lady who served us the wine answered the phone and may have been a bit taken aback by the honesty but said not to worry, write a review for the meals instead. We will definitely be returning next time we are in Bristol!

This woman who works there is just damn rude. She belittled me for my food order (I eat a lot of food, but am skinny, and hadn't eaten much all day). I ordered the leg of lamb but would have ordered two mains, and as she loudly berated me for asking to SPEND MORE MONEY and have two dishes, completely embarrassing me in the tiny dining room, I ended up leaving hungry after eating just the leg of lamb, while an okay portion, that's not what I wanted to order!!! I also wanted the moussaka far more, though is usually not very filling in comparison to meat and potatoes, so ended up missing out on what I really wanted to save being even hungrier when I left. Quick food review, soft lamb shank but they're all soft, didn't taste of much, didn't remind me of any Greek food I've had. The potatoes are softly boiled in flavourless broth with veg. Just don't bother. Maybe my moussaka would have been nice but she didn't want to let me see for myself. I cannot get over how rude she was to me, you don't know everything, you aren't God, stop acting like the people who go in there are brainless food monsters, we actually know what we want. NOT YOUR SERVICE! You made me feel like I could cry, and kept your tirade up for the entire dinner. Didn't feel like you should have apologised at all? This was a few weeks ago now and I am still furious. For anyone neurodivergent, anxious, anything like this, avoid this place, the owner is a complete a$$. Not welcoming. Some people hate confrontation, you have no right to cause a confrontation in a dining room where there is like 4 square meters so everyone can hear, and your customers can't say a thing. You are a disgusting server. SHE WAS EVEN ARGUING WITH A DISABLED WOMAN IN THE STREET WHEN WE ARRIVED, THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST CLUE. You're not running the Karin cafe, so let's stop acting like it. You had the other couple ordering a million small plates and then mains, I just wanted 2 mains. Get your head out of that smelly dark place you've been keeping it.

I picked this venue for dinner before seeing a show at the Hippodrome. I appreciated that the food can take a while to arrive, but it is so worth it as all freshly made instead of just reheating etc. My nephew was not familiar with greek, but loved the meal. It was quite simply - delicious. The staff went out of their way to make the dinner the best it can be. It would be hard to find a greek restaurant to beat this place - even in Greece. They are dedicated to it and it is noticeable.

Booked for a pre theatre dinner and really lucked in. The service was lovely, the food was brilliant, very Greek as you’d hope. I had fried courgettes followed by mix (chicken & pork) souvlaki skewers with rice and salad and my wife had fried haloumi followed by chicken in olive oil and herbs, I tasted every dish and they were all great. I asked the waitress to recommend a red wine which she did and I got a really plummy delicious glass as a result.

Came here for a family birthday and a recognition of a past life. We received a friendly welcome to this cosy establishment. The dips to start were excellent and my Kleftico with roasted potatoes was a lean lamb shank of authentic loveliness. Very drinkable bottle of Greek wine to compliment the food made for a very satisfying meal. Only minor downside was only having a two hour slot when another 30 mins would have been perfect. The ambiance and the food made it a very enjoyable experience. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

What an amazing place! The team couldn’t have been more welcoming and took us through the menu - number of dishes to order, which options were available and suggestions. We opted for a main and 4 meze plates. The meze plates came first - prawn, sausage, vine leaves, calamari and some dips. All delicious and come with warm pitta bread slices. The chicken souvlaki skewers take longer to cook and were incredible. Beautifully juicy and full of flavour. Served with hand cut chips and salad. Finished up with baklava and walnut cake dessert. How I’ve not been here before is a mystery - but worth every penny and definitely coming again!

Simply fantastic. We had our works Christmas Party here and everyone had a great time. A quaint little restuarant with a really nice atmosphere. The staff are simply fantastic, great fun, friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The best bit, which stands head and shoulders above everything is the food!!! Simply amazing. Fantastic flavours, great quality and a friendly chef that came out to check everything was ok. Genuinely would not hesitate to recommend this place. I’ll be back with my family.

Found by accident just before we caught a concert at St Georges - and a very fortutious accident it proved to be...!!! Great ambience, superb food (I can heartily reccomend the Greek Village Sausage and Pork Bits...!!!), and fantastically friendly and efficient service from the whole team there... A hidden gem indeed...

The food was not really flavorful, it’s just salty. Nothing to really remember about. Service was subpar too.

The food was lovely! We ordered the sharing platter and it was delicious. Everything is prepared fresh so there’s a small wait for food but we had bread and olives with dip to keep us occupied. Thank you Susie for the amazing hospitality. Everyone from the other servers (making amazing cocktails) to the chef who also came to check we enjoyed the food. Everyone was so welcoming, friendly and an asset to the Bistro. We will definitely be back again.

I know we hadn't booked but that is no excuse for the rude welcome we received, the restaurant was empty and the lady on Front of House duty barked at us to stay where we were and she would see if she could fit us in, she seemed to have an attitude transplant when a Greek lady walked in, also without a booking, and found her a table with minimal fuss, also when an American couple walked in without a booking they were treated with respect. The food was average, with straw fries as an accompaniment as opposed to chips. We were given the dessert menu by her but after 20 minutes without her returning to take our order we just asked for our bill. Won't be going there again, there are far better restaurants in that area.

Wonderful authentic Greek food. Starter, main and desert were all amazing but it’s really the staff that make this place special. We had the loveliest waitress who couldn’t do enough for us. We had the most amazing tzatziki, when I complimented it the chef came out to explain how to make it at home. She even gave me her email address if I ever had any questions on the recipe. I can not recommend this place enough.

Excellent!! The food was really tasty, everything was nice and fresh. They didn't have a kids menu but they offered to make smaller portions, my children loved it, they already want to go again.

We were able to walk in on a Saturday evening and were told we could have a table in an hour, they would ring us if one became available any earlier and then recommended a bar close by while we waited ( which was excellent)....

Popped in before a theatre visit, limited menu, saganaki had never seen a Greek recipe book, mousaka was solid, beef not lamb ! Not sure the chef had ever seen a Greek recipe book. Wine only sold in small glasses, weird. Staff were prickly, chef...

This was our second visit to the bistro and it was as good as our first experience! Excellant, traditional Greek food. Service is exceptional. Souvlaki, Moussaka and the Kleftico highly recommended.

Amazing restaurant in the old town of Bristol. It’s located close to the theatre and offers a very good choice of greek traditional dishes. (I strongly recommend the Moussaka together with the Baklava) The atmosphere is warm and you could see that the restaurant itself was furnished with love. It is a welcoming place for everyone with very delicious, fresh and homemade food. I can’t wait to come back, the next time I visit Bristol!

We had dinner here and it was good. The restaurant is quite small and tucked away up a side street. The waitress was friendly and efficient. The food was good and the mains were a good size although the starters were quite small. The drinks were quite pricey and really pushed up the price of the bill. Although the food was good, I found it a bit pricey for what it was.

Sold out of quite a few dishes. Waitress attentive and friendly. Proper man sized portions you won’t leave hungry, expensive for what it was. Some of the extras really pushed the bill up.

Lovely little restaurant with friendly attentive staff. Our server was very accommodating and was able to recommend dishes from the menu. We shared the village sausage to start the a portion of chips (which were so good!) and then both had the moussaka finishing with an espresso martini.

My friend took me here because she loves this place and her family insist on going back every time they visit her in Bristol. I completely understand why. The food was incredible, the wine was excellent, and the waitress was so friendly she really made us feel welcome. Only trouble is, we enjoyed it so much we didn't realise we were there for over 3 hours.

Booked ahead, we were greeted as soon as we entered and shown to our table ..the owner came to chat. The entire meal cooked fresh that day on the premises. I can recommend the lamb kleftika and their chocolate pud with ice cream is special. Quite expensive, but then overhead costs are high nowadays...

Don’t order Freya for your drinks. There’s strange after taste though it’s within the Best Before Date. Also you can tell from the bottle, the brewer is right opposite the restaurant, which is closed and is covered in dust. Mixed grill took 40 minutes which we were informed beforehand. However, not much grilled taste to the meat, more like deep fried.

Food was lovely and plenty of choice. We were on business and asked for separate bills for our individual meals and the waitress(not sure if she was manager or not) wasn't happy. She was very obvious in her bemusement of us having the audacity to ask such a ridiculous request!!! Spoiled the atmosphere for us. Shame because the food was lovely and the rest of staff helpful.
