If I could have given this place 0 stars I would have. We booked a Christmas meal there, at 5pm- 2 hours before the meal, we were told that the ‘soul night’ we were promised was cancelled. We had paid £37.50 each for a meal and a night out so that was disappointing. Me and my partner turned up to the venue. He ordered a red stripe which seemed to be on tap. It wasn’t. They poured it into a plastic glass from the can!! Things went bad to worse; we were the only people there, we were on seperate tables for 14 of us, terrible customer service, the staff were unapologetic, need I go on! Do not book here for any event!

Precioso bar bien surtido y un personal atento. Las bebidas son un poco caras pero recibes lo que pagas. Si quieres un hotel barato y alegre, entonces busca en otro lado. Elegante y chic, entonces vaya a la calle Dinamarca.

Attended a private event here recently for business. Great central location, and the space worked very well (was approximately 80 of us, but could have comfortably held more). At our choice we had a finger buffet, which was served by very polite and friendly staff. In fact the entire team of waiters, bar staff, door supervisor were all extremely polite and helpful. Good selection of wines, beers and spirits. All in all was a very pleasant evening and would definately book a business event here again.

Gran noche.

The organisation process went very smoothly and the staff were wonderful. The atmosphere is just right with the lighting and there was a DJ but it was not too loud that we couldn't talk. All in all a very happy Hen and partyWe will all be returning to try some more cocktails and tapas :)

Where do I start, the staff were so welcoming and very proud of there venue... The bar is a central square which makes it very sociable, the restaurant seating is to one side, background music and a perfect atmosphere. I went with friends but there were couples and groups eating and just drinking in the bar. There is also a side room where music and a dance floor which got busy from about 10.30pm...We had a cocktail when we arrived which was served with bread and oil at the bar, the guy making the cocktails was very good at helping us make the right decision based on our likes and dislikes, he was very lovely. We ordered the taster menu which was an amazing experience, the waitress knew about the wines and the food, she too was very proud of the venue and after we'd eaten took the time to show us around the museum area etc.Cannot enthuse about this place enough, we are going back in the New Year with our partners, thanx guys grand job

It's a lovely setting and the staff were great however the cocktails were pretty much neat booze (some might like this) and the tapas was sub standard, cheapest cuts of meat used and although some dishes were ok, it's probably better to have a simple drinks and enjoy the space.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We visited this establishment on Friday 30th October. I found it on the internet and was instantly excited as not only do I enjoy fine dining and a tasting menu / flight experience, but I am also a big Harvey's Bristol Cream lover. After making my partner promise to accompany me there soon, he booked us in for that evening. We arrived to find a doorman who greeted us, then down stairs to a place to check our coats. So far so good; seems to be a classy establishment with the right touches to make this a memorable experience. It was memorable but for all of the wrong reasons. We were taken to a table near the main bar which wasn't a problem, however we soon realised that there was a hen party in and they were in a private room 15 metres away with no door to separate us. To start with there was a lot of cheering and screaming from this group, but I can tolerate that as I know it isn't easy to control the noise on a large group. We were then asked if we wanted the wine or sherry menu. This would make one think that you were going to be presented with a menu that you can pick a drink from. We asked for the sherry menu as I was keen for a Harvey's Bristol Cream. We then waited for 45 minutes and no menu or further correspondence received. My partner went to the bar to ask why we hadn't been given the menu. We were told that the food was coming. It would appear that without seeing a menu at all, we had selected the sherry tasting menu and you can pick from two (wine or sherry). I could tell this wasn't going to be ideal as I would have preferred to have chosen a wine or sherry for each course that we would receive, or at least know what wines or sherrys were available. We had also sat for 45 mins without a drink on our table; poorly missed upsell. We were then shortly presented with our starters and first drinks (50 minutes wait). Starter was 4 different things which were one bite of each, 3 of the 4 fish. This wasn't to my particular taste but again, I can accept that. The whole point was to try new foods so there was bound to be one course not to my taste. Second course was a selection of cured meats with bread and olive oil. The bread was not even a slice and was rather tiny bits of bread that looked to have been hand picked from a loaf and scattered in the middle of the plate, drowned in olive oil and some meat around the outside. We were presented with a side plate also. The meats were fine but the olive oil was a bit much. We hadn't had this on our table for more than 5 mins before the "main meal" arrived. I would like to note that at no point from was our side plate taken from us with a fresh one provided. We therefore now used the same side plate for 3 courses. During the meat course, the hen party's disco started. DJ and full sound system commenced and we could no longer hear ourselves think let alone what one another had to say. With each course comes a drink - all sherry as mentioned. The waiter tried to give a description of each sherry on arrival, however I could not hear him. At this point the waiters knew the disco would be a problem and you could tell even they were embarrassed of the service that we were receiving. Of course, they said nothing. Now we have noise, 2 of our courses on our table at one time and two horrendously dry sherry's each that we do not like. The main meals (2 different ones to try) was a mash potato and beef brisket and a dumplings with chorizo. Portion size is one bite/mouthful of each; they arrive on a spoon so no need even for cutlery. This was not enough! Next course was the cheese and another extremely dry sherry. The biscuit was stale and the green grapes were brown! The cheese were fine but didn't accompany the drink. We were also getting through these courses at such a pace the taste of the sherry was now overpowering. Final course is a trio of desserts and the presentation was again bad. The layered dessert of Tiramusu was possible one large spoon "dollop" on the plate. No defined layers so I would describe as "Eaton Tiramisu" - it was a mess. Then we had vanilla cheesecake and lemon tart. I must have caught the end of the batch here as I had two tiny bits of each that didn't match the other; different shapes etc. My partner was lucky to have an actual square of cheesecake and an actual miniature slice of tart. It was at this point we realised that we would need a pizza on the way home, this meal was not nice or filling (I am a petite size 6 before you think that I have an unusually large appetite). They had attempted a garnish at half a strawberry however our strawberry's weren't even halved accurately. I had a massive chunk with stalk and my other half had such a tiny slither it was pointless putting it on. Whilst desserts were still on the table, my partner asked a waiter to bring the bill immediately. I was concerned about the expected £70 bill (£35 each as advertised on the website), but we were keen to get out of this awful place and the blaring music that it provided. The bill arrived at £90 (£45 each). At this my partner complained. He expressed that he was insulted that such a bill was presented and they did not argue at all; the staff were aware the experience we received was shocking. The waiter then gave a bill of £70 and my partner again said he wasn't happy to pay that. We were then given a discount from that and given a bill for £54, which we still regret paying. That was by far the worst meal experience that I have ever received. Other points to note is the interior is cheap and dated. Laminate tables, cracks in the walls, creaky chairs. It needs some money to bring it to the standards to that it describes itself to have on the website. Both of us used the restrooms with absolutely no intention of ever using again. The males had only one toilet in use with the other cracked. Tiles missing / cracked. The ladies again, dated with a lot of the hen party sat in there chatting and taking up the space. Needed a good clean and no toilet paper provided. There was also a sign on the wall suggesting that if you are seen to be going into the cubicles in groups / more than one, then you will be asked to leave immediately. This place has clearly not attracted a great crowd.I would suggest with the bookings taken, this place needs to decide whether it is a fine dining and delightful place to have a cocktail and/or eat or whether it is to attract one and all. It needs to be realistic as I feel the website had completely missold my evening. I was so embarrassed and apologetic that I begged my partner to bring me to such an awful place that I cried at the table during course 3. It was shameful. I will be shocked if sherry brand Harvey's has their name to this place and if it does, I would suggest it revamps the establishment or removes its name. I cant believe that Harveys Cellars has £54 of our money. I also cant believe they describe themselves on the website as follows:"A past that spans centuries and which saw the joining of two nautical giants, England and Spain: two nations once divided by war and subsequently joined by trade. A trade that included the noble wine of Jerez, Sherry. As you sit and lose yourself in the magnificence of these medieval cellars it’s easy to believe the building is soaked in a fascinating history. With its white stoned walls, hidden tunnels and shimmering blue glass bottle display, it’s obvious that these cellars have embraced an intriguing and antiquated past. If the walls could talk, they would surely whisper you their secrets of times gone by…"

We visited with a Groupon voucher that we had forgot to redeem, the venue were happy to take us after the expiration- I know a lot of places that wouldn't have been so accommodating. From the moment we arrived, the reception and waiting staff were friendly and attentive. We ordered 6 tapas between the two of us and each dish was at least the equal of tapas I've had elsewhere, and some better. We especially enjoyed, and would recommend the beef stew and the goat curry, which were very flavoursome. And the ribs! The ribs were also excellent. After eating we moved to the bar and had a few sherrys each, we found the barmen to be informative and they were happy to guide us sherry novices through the choices. We eventually wobbled our way out into the night, certain that we'd return with friends.

Very small portions served with small glasses of cocktails. We ordered prawns (5 were served, why and odd number), same with the ribs (3) which needed to be cooked 15 mins longer. The jambon was strange, small tasteless fried balls of something, the waitress said is was ham-like!! We enjoyed the Jamacian stew and that was the only good dish. We also ordered a side of bread and olives (thank goodness). We were encourged to order order more sides but the mains should have been of better quantity and thought what a cheek. Very disappointed with this place. Nice interior, fairly miserable staff, average food. Went on Amazon local deal of cocktails for two and 2 tapas each. We ordered our tapas and also as an extra 4.50 side order. When we paid the bill we were charged for a tapas not a side order. Ordered Spanish omelette told they had run out and it was only 6.30 pm. We complained as wrongly charged but they refused to budge and as we didn't have the correct change for the side order had to pay full amount of tapas. I said that was the tip then! Been to better places, would never recommend.

I rarely if ever write comments but am compelled to write one about my experience at Harvey's. Food at best was adequate although the Spanish omelette was very bland. portions were on the small size and overpriced. I have had much better tapas.Cocktail wasn't too bad, but when my table was brought a bottle of wine we noticed that it appeared to already have been opened (the bottle was not full) despite the waiter making a great show of opening the bottle (screw top) When I challenged the waiter he denied that the bottle had already been opened, but offered us an 'extra glass' when we would have finished the bottle before making a hasty exit. The wine was acidic and unpleasant. When this was pointed out to the waiter he commented that the bottle must have been open under the counter! Surely he would have noticed this when making a show of opening the bottle at our table. The old stuff removed we were eventually given an unopened bottle. This begs the question as to what the bar and waiting staff do with the drinks. The bottle had clearly been used before we got it, so did the staff just not notice? Was this from earlier in the day or the previous night, even? Was it dregs they collected and put back in the bottle? I suppose we will never know. But I would not have expected this kind of service from a long standing Bristol business with a name synonymous with wine! If you do go, then please watch the staff closely and check your drinks.....

I used to visit this venue many years ago when it was also an underground museum, based in tunnels under the centre of Bristol, with many historic drink related items, and ending in a recreation if a 16th century wine bar. Sadly this is now no longer there as far as I know.We visited last night because we had a voucher for Tapas, so booked a table for the very last day the voucher was valid for, and looked forward to seeing what it was like.We actually arrived just over an hour early due to other things we were doing having finished, so we decided to see if we could be seated or if we would have to return at the booked timeThe staff couldnt have been more helpful, of course we could be seated early, and we were shown to a table, voucher taken drinks and food ordered. The food when it came was a delight, truly excellent and just the right amount we thought for 2 people, as we had added a side portion of bread with tomato. The mixture of Jamaican and Catalan dishes couldnt be faulted and we particularly liked the Potatoes with spicy Brava and Alioli sauce. The cocktails together with the house wine we also excellent. The staff did a great job, just because we had a voucher and only paid £3 for the bread didnt cloud how we were treated, and we both really enjoyed our visit so much we will be looking to return again soon and repeat it

The tapas portions were very generous and the cocktails delicious. We left totally satisfied with what had been an excellent meal, having expected more like an appetiser. We did get a bargain price, but even the regular menu seems very reasonable. Jazz in a neighbouring room was enjoyable but not intrusive. Location is excellent for central Bristol (especially pre-theatre –just yards from the historic Hippodrome which often puts on West End shows)The staff could not have been more helpful and the manager very accommodating when I had to change the date of my booking. We did not visit all the rooms but there seem quite a few areas including the historic display of blue glass - interesting and reminds one of the roots of the place, and that Bristol’s heritage and prosperity was built up on imports of many types – very significant being wine and sherry - Harvey’s was to Bristol what Bacardi is to the Caribbean!

We had my boyfriends 30th party at Harvey cellars and chose the venue because it is a beautiful place. We had lots of back and forth with the manager before the event but she was pretty abrasive from the get go. She took pretty hard lines on pretty much everything. The music room was great but very very dark and no seating in there so we found that most people went in to the main bar area so they could hear each other, use the bar and the seating area. We paid extra for the private bar but it was barely stocked so nobody used it (waste of £150!!)I left some stuff with the barman earlier in the day when I had gone in to decorate but they lost it or some excuse. We didn't like the look of the menu for our particular event, as was all spicy and not very good veggie options so we asked to bring in our own, but eventually they agreed on pasties. They also threw people out early, despite having booked the place until 3am, they just didn't care and one staff member said the another (in front of the people) - 'so what if they have booked until then, what are they going to do'Also, annoyingly, there is no reception down there which is really frustrating as guests couldn't find the place. I think an investment in wifi would go a long way.Overall the party was great and we had a good time but I would not recommend this place to anyone and will not be returning myself. I doubt any of the party goers will either.

We visited harveys as a group of 4. 2 of us were using a groupon voucher and the other 2 were of us were full paying customers. The tapas menu was ok but certainly not the best tapas we have had. Apon entering the restaurant there was clearly a mix up with the bookings and we were placed in a room to the side of the restaurant as they had obviously not reserved the table we booked. We were the only people in this room and there was no atmosphere atall. There attitude towards the groupon voucher was nothing short of dire. When ordering the tapas we selected many dishes from the main menu. We were clearly told these dished were not within the groupon deal. Perfectly acceptable but the Attitude that came across when mentioning this was not acceptable. From my understanding you place a groupon advert to promote your business and get people through the door to show them how good your menu is. Not to treat them like they were only there for a cheap but of grub. We spend in excess of £100 on top of the pre paid groupon voucher and there attitude towards us did not change. To sum it up, the tapas is okay but I would say not really worth the higher price tag it demands. If your after a good cocktail then I recommend them highly, however if you like service with a smile this is not the place to go. Overall good cocktails, okay food and terrible service.

I only found out about this place recently and so glad I did. I've already been 3 times and the tapas was the best I've had each time. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. This added to a relaxing and chilled out atmosphere makes it the perfect place to eat and drink. If you love tapas and cocktails or a relaxing place to go for a drink, this is definitely the place to go.

We arrived to after booking a table for four, which they couldn't seat us in the main restaurant. They put us in the music room, which was very dark. The food was okay, but not great. The service was appalling. We spent over £100 and at about 10 o clock one of the waiters came over and said we need to cash up, which was very rude. We finished our drinks and left. Won't be going back in a rush!

Went to harveys for a meal with my husband last night and the only fault in the evening was I wanted more! The food was delicious and one of the best best Spanish omelettes I have ever tasted also the chicken was delicious!! All in all it was a fantastic meal and service and I will not hesitate to recommend and will be back sooner rather than later. Thanks harveys

Went for a birthday 'treat' on 13th December for the sherry tasting menu. The food was OK but there was very little of it and when we finally left (3 hours later) we were still very hungry. The waiting staff knew nothing about the dishes nor the sherry that they were serving and we were told nothing about the menu. We didn't even know how many dishes / sherries to expect. The service was absolutely appalling and very disorganised with courses either being brought out before the previous one was cleared away, or with us having to wait an hour in between. The 'Manager' openly admitted that the service was dreadful when we complained, but blamed other staff and refused to reduce the bill. Just don't go there.

I went there for dinner with friends and to try the wine tasting menu. The wine was ok but no explanation of what we were having was given at any point. The food wasn't good at all, probably some of the worse tapas I have ever had, I know Bristol isn't Spain, but if you are gonna be selling tapas you should at least get them right. The service was slow and seemed badly organised and one of the waiters kept telling us how incompetente the others were, which we found very rude of him. I have to say the other waitress who served us was lovely and when we mentioned to her how dissatisfied we were, she apologised and got us a free drink on the house. We won't be going back there any time soon.

A group of 20 work colleagues visited recently and had their Xmas Tapas (£35) menu and its fair to say, overall it was very disappointing. While their was a decent selection on paper, the reality was that the quality was indifferent - a view shared by nearly all of our group. As a start, the olives had a really strange taste and this theme just carried on throughout the meal from the very small selection of cured meats - very carefully counted out so we all had one small slice of the selection on the table - through to the jerk spiced chicken that didnt really taste of anything. Not a place we as individuals will rush back to with our partners in the near future

This is the second time I have visited Harveys Cellars and I have booked a table to come back with friends at Christmas to try their Christmas menu and stay on for one of their music nights as they sound like fun. The tapas dishes don't always come out at once it has to be said but personally we would rather have them delivered freshly as they are cooked than wait for them to all come out together. After all this is the nature of tapas and how it should be served and it was explained to us when we sat down that this might be the case as they were pretty busy when we visited. The dishes that we have tried have been delicious and the beef stew and goat curry are to die for! I will be recommending this restaurant to friends and look forward to my next visit.

My husband and I took our friends along to this restaurant as we had been recently twice before and were raving about it - alas that is not the case anymore! We went on a Groupon voucher but (as per another person's review) "thank goodness we did not pay the full price". The service was slow and poor and although they warn that not all the dishes will be delivered at the same time, they sent dishes over but we couldn't make a start as there wasn't enough to make up a meal, we then had to wait for the rest to be delivered which meant the food was no longer warm, the dishes were also not of a standard that we have been used to.When it came to paying our final bill, when we mentioned that the service was sub-standard to our other visits, there was no care-factor or apology. Overall, we were embarrased to take our friends after having raved about it and sadly, we will not be returning again.

the worst effort at Jamaican food you could possibly have the misfortune of eating. The bread was stale, chicken over done, prawns seemed gritty and the ribs were obviously frozen and microwaved. I bought a voucher from KGB for tapas and cocktails for two. I think these are a great way to try new places without spending a fortune with the view to return if the food/experience is worth it. I will not be returning here.We went on a Tuesday evening so quiet but took a while for us to be acknowledged. The chap who showed us to our seat and then served us could not have wanted to be there any less! He hardly said a word and seemed fairly grumpy. OK, annoying but we all have bad days. The cocktail we ordered was really good, and the food was pretty tasty too. The real issue was when i told the waiter i had a peanut allergy - he didnt say anything to re-assure me which instantly but me and my partner on edge. He then read back our order and went to leave. As an after thought he then asked me if me allergy was 'bad'. I told him it was severe which it is. I have never been asked this of all the times i have been out for food. I couldn't believe it! Not looked after at all. We felt like we were a nuisance and for the first time EVER we did not leave a tip.

On a par with the best I had when living in the Caribbean but the bonus is the classy location (hidden away like a secret gem) and the amazing cocktail menu. The Caribbean food was delicious! We had the ackee & saltfish with delicious spicy prawns (definitely recommended) as a starter. Fried chicken, dumplings, beef stew and rice & peas to share for our main. The restaurant was only about 10% full, but maybe that was because it was on a Sunday evening. Even though there wasn't a lot of diners, somehow the subtle lights and soulful music created a lovely ambience. My husband and I will definitely visit again either on one of the jazz evenings or on a Friday or Saturday evening.Overall, a great experience!

Four of us went on a Tuesday evening at 8.30pm and expected an empty restaurant but there were already several tables occupied. We were warmly greeted, promptly provided with menus for drinks and food. We chose our cocktails which were wonderful and took our time in choosing from the very extensive range of Tapas which was difficult only because so many sounded so tempting. What was unusual and good was that the Tapas was not the usual selection of Mexi-Spanish street food BUT a good number of Jamaican dishes. We had mainly Jamaican ones and they were superb, very tasty, not too spicy, and generous portions too. The fixed menu gives 2 dishes per person and that was very ample as we even could not eat all the food provided. All in all it was a extremely good evening which we enjoyed very much, a great atmosphere with live Jazz some evenings. The décor is brilliant and the lighting just right being neither too dark nor too light. Can't wait too go back.

Then spicy prawns as starters, followed by Jamaican slow cooked beef with spinach. Coconut and pineapple cake for dessert. The wine was reasonably priced.Having just returned from Nerja in Spain, where the taps was superb, unsure why the menu stated tapas which is Spanish when clearly it was more Caribbean. We were taken to Harveys Cellars for a Tapas lunch, using a Groupon deal to part-pay for the meal. Our companions had been before and had enjoyed it enough to introduce it to us.A strange smell of incense greets you as go down the stairs. The downstairs room has a continental feel to it, with a central island bar, some high tables with stools and some low tables with chairs. Otherwise, the decor is lacking in interest, apart from the wall of blue glass bottles to the right before you go down to the restaurant. A Saturday lunch-time, and only one or two other tables were occupied.I was surprised to find the Tapas were Creole and not Spanish, and assumed this was an acknowledgement of Bristol's slave trade. (I think their advertising could make it clearer that the tapas are not Spanish.)We started with a cocktail. The menu includes some interesting-sounding cocktails using sherry, but 2 of us had the very delicious Mariachi tequila-based cocktail, and 2 had the bramble gin-based cocktail, all at £7. (I didn't taste it, but I'm told the bramble cocktail was lacking in alcohol.)To begin our lunch, we ordered 4 tapas (priced at up to £6 each) : Indo-Caribbean Curried Goat , Escovitch Fried Fish, Jamaican Style Pot Beef Stew and Creole Spiced Prawns. All were very good, especially the Escovitch, although the goat and beef dishes could have had a lot more punch. We ordered repeats of the goat, fish and prawns. With wine and bread, and coffee to follow, this all made a very tasty lunch. Water was served in an old, pale blue Harvey's bottle - a nice touch. The waitress, from the north of Spain, was cheerful and helpful.I would go again. (The next day, we had a tapas lunch at the Lido, and although the venue was perfect - on a sunny day, the tapas were not nearly as good as at Harveys.)

The brand Harvey's has been a bristol institution for decades. I was so excited to see it reopen and the restaurant looked fantastic with the great bar and the wall of bristol blue glass sherry bottles. I thought the concept of a tapas restaurant would work well with the history of sherry. Good but simple Spanish tapas would have been fantastic, but unfortunately that isn't on the menu and the tapas that is available really isn't that good. On the other hand the staff are really friendly and service was good, and the cocktails are fantastic.
