I’ve enjoyed Harris and Hoole for a quick coffee with friends and some toddler time for quite a few years now. However today I went into the accessible toilet. What the hell has happened? I’ve never seen a dirtier toilet in a chain cafe. I’m talking dust and hair all over the toilet and basin, suggesting neither had been wiped for a matter of weeks. I didn’t investigate any further by looking in the ladies or men’s loos, but that doesn’t matter really as many people have to use the accessible toilet, and it was definitely not closed off in any way. Very, very weird. Coffee was fine but after the loo I wondered about kitchen hygiene a bit too!

Very friendly staff, nice ambiance, good coffee, fresh croissants, good service. Altogether very nice ...... except parts of the curlstomer area are really grubby, dusty and badly in need of a clean, eg skirting, floor edges and very dusty low level shelving.

Visited Harris & Hoole for a lunch time coffee & snack. Poor service. The staff member took my order of a coffee, sausage roll & cake and immediately forgot about it. I collected my coffee and sat at a table which like most others was full of previous customers mugs, cutlery, packaging etc. After 15 minutes I had to enquire as to where my food was and saw the only sausage roll still in the display cabinet. My food arrived with an apology; the table wasn’t cleared & my plate was placed on top of another one already there. I had already finished my coffee so it was all a bit dry. I know they will say it’s a staff issue but other cafes in Amersham provide a better service with the same level of staffing. It’s just a lack of awareness & incompetence.

I’m a regular at H&H because the atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming. The coffee is very good and the staff are usually friendly. Sometimes it can feel very grubby - the recent introduction of plants for sale at the front and the replacement of the floor has helped, but the toilets are disgusting. There are also too many low tables and low seats which are not conducive to eating (and in any case, the food quality and selection is dire).

We come here every sunday to meet up with our son and daughter in law for coffee and pastries. I have written a previous review - sadly today I cannot give another glowing review. Coffee and service was as usual good but sadly I decided to visit the disabled toilets which I havn't done for several months. I was totally shocked and believe me it takes a lot to shock me with cleaning issues having been a carer for 18 years. Unfortunatley I was desperate and had to use the filthy toilet - there was dirty black stains all around the rim of the toilet running down into the bowl it obviously hadn't been cleaned for some time. Both of the sinks were dirty - the one nearest to the toilet was thick with black grime and scum all around the bottom of the taps - the whole toilet area was in need of a deep blitz clean, and there was no toilet paper, the sheet had been filled in - what cleaning had been done was none exsistent!!! I was absolutley disgusted and felt literley filthy, this is an establishment that was packed out with people and children, I hate to think of other areas that havn't been cleaned., I think this needs to be reported to the council - how this level of dirt has been allowed to build up on toilets and handbasins in a restaurant is disgusting - I cannot believe that this has gone unoticed. We certainly won't be frequenting here again!!!!

In my opinion this restaurant probably serves the best coffee in Amersham however the service is a bit hit and miss and the staff are not particularly welcoming. The floors don’t appear to have been swept for a very long time, which I note from previous reviews have been commented on numerous times, over a very long time, and the tables are often overflowing with cups, plates & food. The toilets were not particularly clean too. There are lots of coffee shops and cafes in Amersham and even though the coffee is the best customers will go soon start to go elsewhere.

I have to give this little wonder a great review mainly for the fact that there coffee is goooood! I drink my coffe black so many places for me are out, without milk I can taste the bitter or burnt coffee. Harris & Hoole in Amersham serves delicious coffee even when black. For this reason I have returned many times and have also tried out most of their sandwiches and snacks which are all delicious. The facilities are great; books and toys at the back for children, a choice of table seating or sofas to lounge on. My only wish is that there were a few more seats as lunch time gets busy. Oh and the Stawberry Milkshake is to die for! Yum Yum for Harris & Hoole.

The coffee served here is delicious and a lot of care has clearly been put into the supply of this blend. The prices are fairly astronomical, but one would expect that from an artisan-style coffee shop. The biggest problem with H&H; is however the time it takes to make a coffee. I'm not sure whether they're understaffed or just have to follow a long process to make the coffee but sometimes you can be waiting for a long time.

I visit H&H regularly. Sometimes to work and sometimes for a ginger bread man with my daughter. The tea, coffee and cakes are very good. The ginger bread men have the added benefit of keeping children entertained through decorating with icing, and the sausage rolls are also a popular choice. However, both the ginger bread men and sausage rolls run out early due to their popularity. It would be great to see the refreshing fresh fruit drinks on the menu year round, but these seem to only be available in the summer. The wifi is very good, much better than some other coffee shops in the area. There is a mixed clientele and small children are welcomed by toys at the back of the cafe.. they do sometimes look as though they need a clean though. Tap water is available for customer to self-serve.The toilets are a tight squeeze, and as with almost every coffee shop I've visited, they could be a little cleaner. The staff are always friendly and overall I would recommend this coffee shop.

This is a great café - the best in Amersham as far as I am concerned because they welcome dogs and children. No! They actually encourage dogs and children. The dogs have water bowls down and the staff make a fuss of them! Don't be put off if you're not a dog lover; the four legged visitors are well behaved. There is a separate area of the café for the children and their parents so they don't have any impact on those who want a child free time . H&H is usually quite busy which creates a great atmosphere! It is frequented by dog lovers and non dog lovers alike and on any mid week day, there will always be at least half a dozen people with their laptops working from the premises. The food is good and my only quibble is that the tea is a bit weak and when I have asked for another tea bag to build it up a bit, I have had to pay for it.Other than that one niggle, this really is the place to go in Amersham if you're looking for a casual coffee in a convivial atmosphere. And don't worry if you're not a dog or child lover, they never cause a fuss.

Probably the best latte I have had and certainly beats all the local competition - which is unfortunately the usual chains. The building is nice also with plenty of seating, lovely high ceilings and has a chilled weekend vibe. The book swap is also a nice touch. It's a shame really, because you can see what H&H aspired to be, but went and compromised themselves by selling part of their soul to Tesco. With the subsequent problems associated with the supermarket giant's cost-cutting measures earlier this year. There's a lot to be said for staying small and maintaining a steady walk along the road ahead - at least until you are strong enough to run in your own right. Clearly, the temptation of big-boy investment was too tempting an offer to refuse for H&H. Whilst the minimalistic shabby chic-style decor is fast becoming a bit yesterday now, there is an appeal for families with young children in tow as they have a fair bit of space in which to play with the various toys provided. However, the food is nothing of note and is over-priced, and the staff aren't particularly attentive. With Costa and Nero on their doorstep, you'd expect them to try a bit harder, and the similarly-styled Cafe Africa just up the road does this sort of thing far better.

Having visited a few H+H, this one is the same as the other - arty decor, great comfortable surroundings, the food choices and quality are the same, as is the coffee - yet to have a bad one! But the barista's know what they're doing, and it's 100x better than a high street chain where your latte is ready in under 20 seconds? - no skill or knowledge needed. Banging the milk jug doesn't make you a barista! But I think H+H know this, hence the investment in their staff. Just love these places, just need more of them please!!Also love the fact that all of their shops are dog friendly, and you can take your dog in with you. For me, that's just beyond helpful, and I don't really take notice of the upturned noses from people (normally because they are the ones with kids screaming and running round because Waitrose ran out of carrot sticks for their humus) so, quite frankly, they can do one - please never change the dog's welcome policy. It does get busy here as well, especially at lunch time, so make sure you are prepared to hang around for a seat sometimes, but the big comfy sofa's make for passing an afternoon all that much better.Only 4 starts because I want one nearer to my house!!

I was really disappointed with my last visit to H and H.In the past it has been a lovely place to meet friends for coffee I loved the food, quirkiness, friendly staff and selection of tea with timers. however this visit was disappointing -service was slow and not very welcoming, dirty tables , music far too loud, No timers for the tea so it's hit and miss to whether the tea has brewed long enough or too much and they have now taken away the crisps served with the sandwiches. the charm of the place has gone so will be looking else where :( is this due to expanding the number of h and h shops too soon?

Very slow service and no real visible coffee menu long queue and no sorry you had to wait. I know this isn't a big chain but they could learn from them about service in this demanding area of cafe culture there are lots of playersMust try harder

I've been visiting this shop since it opened; the coffee is awesome and although the food is good, it is not as good as it once was. The service is slow at best and at busy times I've waited up to 20 mins for my coffee! The staff are slow to clear tables too.

I have been here a few times and each time there seems to be a different production line system - and always with an apology for the delay. The coffee is decent, and the range of snacks/cakes, while small, is tasty and good value - particulalry anything labelled home made.

Let me begin by saying that the coffee here is of higher quality than pretty much any other I know of in the UK. For example, they are assiduous about using water of just the right temperature for at least some of their brews. The food, although pretty standard high-grade coffee shop fare, is also very good. However, there are some staff-based issues (I have been here a few times before and only noticed these on my most recent visit):1....Unoccupied tables were left uncleared of their debris for well over 90 minutes (and rising) - for much of this time, the place has not been over-busy and I saw one barista take time out to spray–clean those tables that did not need clearing first. As far as the customer's experience is concerned, this kind of thing really does matter, because it impacts on the environment they are selling.2.... I gather the establishment has its own iPhone app. I know this only because the customer in front of me took up the time of the sole till-based barista trying to make it work for upward of five minutes while the queue stacked up behind them. The sensible thing would surely have been to draft in one of the other staff to take orders while all this was going on.Both these examples seem to me to indicate a lack of empathy for the unfortunate punter. It would be a pity if the superior coffee ultimately perished because of poor attention to detail beyond the minutiae of coffee making!Stop Press: I took a photo of the uncleared tables (poor quality and not really worth showing) and they were cleared pretty much immediately thereafter - funny old world!

The staff at this cafe are fantastic. The vibe is relaxed and it is a great place to relax and read a newspaper. They really know how to make an excellent coffee.

We have visited here on several occasions and have now been put off for the future, its an infuriating and exhausting process. How come it takes 10 mins to make a coffee that then takes 2 minutes to drink? Poor service which included being given a timer pad to tell us when to collect our coffee, tables littered with cups, plates that needed clearing, and on one occasion being given take away cups as they didn't have any suitable drink in equipment - lamentable! Seemed to have lots of staff doing what? Bins and brooms cluttering up the space by the fire extinguishers etc. It could be so good.....

This is a Fantastic coffee shop, The staff are so friendly, polite and do what they can for you.I am not really sure what people are expecting from Harris & Hoole, as I feel some of the points I have read are more for a restaurant and I feel they are not a restaurant, the have food available but the normally coffee shop style food, which is perfect for the place it is.We love going here for our usual coffee whether it is take away or sit in, which is normally most Saturday or Sunday morning, which we will endeavour to carry on doing so.

We were shopping and decided we were hungry so popped in here with no idea what sort of food we could get.We were pleasantly surprised by what was on offer although the soup and salad options weren't clearly visible. Enjoyed the sandwiches and the coffee. So here's the 'but'... Whilst I don't mind the industrial look where you are not sure if they are refurbing or not and the nods to local businesses and charity events, it does unfortunately make the whole thing a little confused. The staff were helpful but in quite a casual way.The outside seating made the place look a bit run down and on the whole I felt as though I was being served by students running a soup kitchen for the homeless. Not necessarily a bad thing in itself but not quite the experience I want for my lunch out.If given the choice the Pantry in Hazlemere would win every time.

I love their coffee and am always greeted with a smile when I go to H+H. I bring my computer and do a lot of work when I'm there, using their internet. It really makes me feel like I'm at home. I also love the fact that they help promote local artists. I know they have other branches, but it still doesn't feel like going to one of the big chain cafes. A member of staff told me all their food is sourced locally and it's the same with their other branches. I don't normally eat cakes, but their cakes are amazing.

Sick of the area's offerings for light lunches, this place makes a difference.Aubergine and Halloumi ciabattas, a very good tuna and onion offering and proper tasting tea. Not any more expensive than Costa but really miles ahead.Service is a little peculiar, the staff are sometimes just plainly arrogant and the children's 'play area' is irritating (just a corner where trandy parents can dump their children and forget about them) but it makes an effort at being interesting and to some extent manages it.

I find the coffee very poor quality, it was just very bitter even with sugar added, the milk was rather cold when it should of been heated up to 75 degrees for it the froth up, the wifi was rather slow and my table was quite dirty and I had to ask 2 different members of staff to clean itOnly positive aspect is the cakes look good and I had a chocolate cake which was rather yummy I won't be returning in a hurry though, much better coffee shops in amersham that are cheaper and better quality

I've recently moved into the area and wanted to find a nice regular coffee/lunch place. I visited here last year and loved the coffee so was expecting it to be great.I've tried several times in the last few weeks both pre and post Christmas each time hoping it would improve. Alas I think I have to find somewhere else.Yes the coffee (when made well by one or two of the staff) is good but the likelihood of it being made well is low, and it's likely to be slow (my worst was 15 mins for 4 lattes, and best 5 mins for 2). I've tried both in and take away. The cleanliness is poor, and that's the standard of clearing tables to the personal hygiene. I don't mind no uniforms, in fact I quite like the quirkiness but the cleanliness and personal hygiene is appalling. The last time I visited a young girl arrived, kissed a couple of staff, realised they were struggling so dropped her coat on the floor at the end of the bar and dived behind the counter and started making my coffee. Well intentioned yes, but clearly I or anyone would expect at least a hand wash having just come in!I just end up getting frustrated at waiting, and watching the chaos unfold. If it were genuinely the staffs' personal business they would be much sharper and ensure I hadn't left disappointed on several occasions.Hey ho, can't win them all!

My husband and I were staying at Latimer Place and decided to take a drive to local Amersham where we stumbled across this funky little cafe in the high street. We quickly grabbed a snug sofa and some papers and ordered 2 coffees, a ham & cheese croissant and an all day breakfast sandwich. All of it was delicious. My croissant was crisp and non-greasy like some other croissants I've had and my husbands sandwich was delicious, especially the sausages! Bit disappointed our food arrived before the coffees but otherwise a lovely relaxing Sunday morning reading the papers.

I used to visit costa almost everyday for my coffee, but one day decided to try Harris and Hoole, and it was the best coffee shop I've ever been to. The food was delivered fast and was delicious, the coffee was delivered at pretty much the same time so I could drink and eat together, and it was just at the right temperature. The staff were really friendly and welcoming. All for a great value.I've started to go every morning on my way to work and have recommended it to all my friends.

All I wanted to do was read a book and drink a hot chocolate. The hot chocolate was powdery and bitter the only nice thing I have to say is that it looked pretty. The music was really loud and the cafe was noisy in general. The staff standing around talking and lots of screaming babies. Will not be coming again I'd rather go to Neos a few doors down.
