This is a hidden gem away from the tourist hustle and bustle of Whitby. The couple who run it are friendly and helpful and the food very good quality at excellent prices. Most place today you just about get change from £10 for 2 hot drinks but here You get a little change from £5 for a tea and a coffee, both of which are good quality. The breakfasts are a good price, good quality and generous.

after a lot of good reviews and recommendations, the experience here was awful and i left feeling as if i shouldn't have bothered at all. It wasn't busy at all and there was really no excuse for the lack of service or care that came from the staff. we were sat down and then left for 10 minuets before ordering a drink, think we were forgotten but we ordered drinks and food at the same time. when the plates came out the food was hot and looked nice except there were no peas. we were then told that they didn't have any peas. nice to have known. the chips were burnt and tasteless, just looked like they had been recooked from the day before to be honest. there was no check back and nobody to talk to to ask for replacements as we were round the back. we did tell the staff before paying but were just shrugged off. terrible service and the food wasn't that good in the end either. wish i had just walked a bit further.

A really good place to go for lunch or just a brew, really helpful staff and the meal was perfect. The fish and chips were really good and that's something coming from a Blackpool last to say the least. The gentleman who took our order and brought the meals to the table was very friendly. We had a very nice conversation and a laugh also. An all round pleasant experience

We went here for lunch.. I had a prawn sandwich with fries and my husband had fish & chips. We waited for what seemed quite a long time and when the food arrived the fish and chips were lukewarm. My husband complained as he said he could not eat them like that. The owner of the restaurant took them away and was very apologetic. They were replaced and came back piping hot. The tea and coffee we ordered were give to us free and when I told the lady it was my birthday, she also gave us a slice of cake on the house.. I cannot praise this restaurant highly enough. We had a problem and they sorted it without fuss or ado. We will definitely go back the next time we visit Whitby..

Popped in here for a quick lunch as we noticed it was dog friendly and we had our puppy. The food was bang on, I had the posh fish sandwich which was excellent and the girlfriend chose fish and chips. The restaurant was packed so we sat upstairs where there was plenty of space although a little quiet. The waitress was lovely, attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. We both ate for £20 with drinks which isn’t expensive for that quality. The only gripe if any was the tartare sauce was a little on the salty side, recipe needs tweaking chef. Keep up the good work.

we had been in this restaurant a good few years ago and popped in for a drink and snack. On the day we called in the young woman serving informed us that their coffee machine was out of order so they only had instant coffee which we didn't mind. I ordered the deal which was a teacake and tea which was £3.95 and the wife had a cup of instant coffee we payed the bill but did not realise until later that they had charged us £4.00 for a cup of instant coffee which I think is a bit steep. The young woman that worked there spent more time on her phone than she did on service in fact one couple who came in waited at least 15 minutes and still didn't get served so they left, if it was my café I would be having a word with this member of staff otherwise they will lose a lot of custom

I was a regular visitor to this place when it was Mills café and loved the cakes there. When they changed hands I stopped going in as the food was not the same so when I heard that it was under new management I got quite excited and hoped it would return to the lovely place it used to be. All I can say is I won't be returning. My husband ordered the deal of toasted teacake and a cup of tea at £3.95 and I asked for a cappuccino only to be told that the machine was broken. So I said I would have a cup of instant black coffee. The service was slow and the young girls working there not very attentive in fact the couple who came in behind us left after waiting 20 minutes to be served in an almost empty café while the girl fiddled with her mobile phone. I paid what seemed to be a very expensive price for what we ordered £7.95! It was only when I was out of the place that I realised I had paid £4 for a cup of instant black coffee - even the posh coffee shops don't charge that - but with no receipt I couldn't prove it! If this is how the new owner is operating I can't see them lasting very long!

We'd travelled quite a while to get to Whitby. After some back & forth to a Guest House where our room wasn't ready and a bit of sightseeing, we were very lucky to come across this café. We were ravenous and craving! The Scampi and chips were excellent and did not fail to satisfy. One of our party had a burger. Silly right? but he said it was very good. They were able to accommodate a pram and that was important to us. A tip however - Our lunch required a trip to the cash machine as they did not accept credit cards.

We visited with family and required a table for 6. Was told they didn't have a table for 6 but could sit on separate tables. An offer to put tables together would have been nice. Orders taken quickly. Drinks were served and when we asked if we could have still water instead of the sparkling water served was told rudely that's all they had. We all but 1 ordered the Fish and chips with bread and butter the mixture of white and brown were on the wrong plates which meant we had to lean across the aisle to the other table to swap them around. The tea pots were served to the table of 2 so again meant passing tea to one another across the aisle. On paying they don't currently take credit cards. So had to go and withdraw cash. Certainly wouldn't return or recommend.

Visited this restaurant twice during our three day stay in Whitby in Nov. Could not fault it at all, the fish and chips were delicious. On the last night I had the seafood platter, chips and mushy peas and although I couldn't manage all the chips this was purely down to the generous fish portions which were outstanding. Food was bland and overpriced. The service on our visit was very amateur, the table was not cleaned or serviced with new cutlery. Sauces were brought to our table and dropped in front of us rather than placed more professionally or presented with care. The guy seemed decidedly distracted by customers although upstairs was empty. Perhaps that should have been a sign of the levels of service. The fishcakes tasted of nothing in particular, no seasoning or much fish, the chips were unpleasant, none of us ate many of them and my sons love chips/fries. To top it off when we mentioned the food, there was little apologetic attitude or offer to reduce the bill. A very disappointing visit, and an expensive lunch which we could not enjoy, thankfully we only ordered one course, without getting a dessert.

Decided on an impromptu visit to Whitby, parked in the car park just past train station and walked along the front, it was really busy and all the places on the front were queuing even though it was half past two, wandered down the side street and found the harbour view cafe, from the back you would walk past it, but it does have a large upstairs area, from our point of view it was quiet, clean and toilets on ground floor which is great if your disabled. I ordered the gluten free special, beautifully cooked cod in a light batter along with small slice of gf bread and butter, the waiter said we could share a plate if we wanted as they were big plates, which is unusual, anyway we each got the special, well worth the 10 minute wait as they are cooked to order. As we finished we noticed the closed sign on, clearly they shut for a couple of hours but at no time were we made to feel we had to leave, lovely place and staff , took home a gf scone which was also very nice

Called in here with my elderly mother on a trip to Whitby as she needed to sit down for while, so decided to have lunch as well. The special is rather expensive at almost £11 for fish, chips, peas, bread and butter and a cup of tea. I wasn't really hungry, as I was staying in a hotel whilst visiting family so I'd had a cooked breakfast, but mum needed feeding, hence we went in here. The staff were very good with her needs and said she could have a child's portion, if the normal size would be too big. I ordered haddock and peas but it came with a mound of chunky chips that I hadn't ordered, but as we'd waited a while and mum wouldn't have understood what the problem was (due to dementia) I didn't say anything -but was obviously charged for something I hadn't even ordered. The fish was lovely and very hot with the lightest crispiest batter I think I've ever had but the peas were pretty tasteless and I didn't even eat the chips. We ordered tea and there was plenty for two or three cups each. At take away prices this would be good value but they charge you almost double to eat inside. My advice would be if the weather is good grab a spot outside and have a take away - lovely fish just expensive.

Decided on the special when told it was cod by the waitress. What arrived was a flat triangular piece of some type of fish in a rather unusual type of flat batter. No crispiness or substance to it at all. Chips were even worse, big chunks of hard potato with very little colour. Managed to eat the fish and peas but had to leave batter and chips. Probably the worst in Whitby. Ought to be shut down.

We searched all over for a place in the sun, away from noise for my dog. Upon walking past a female member of staff (she was handing out leaflets and we didn't catch her name) mentioned they welcomed dogs. She was amazing and a credit to you from the second she met us! She walked us to a table, offered a bowl of water for my dog and handed us a menu. She explained ordering, specials and even showed us where to order from! It made everything so much easier especially with a dog on board. The food came and it was perfect, the fish melted in your mouth and was so light and cooked perfectly! A pleasant young man was serving alone and working hard but - he didn't even bring a glass or straw with a bottle of cola for a 4 year old (neither did he offer activity sheet, which I later spotted). Condiments consisted of 2 sachets each of sauce, vinegar & mayonnaise per table of 4, the cheapest available from cash n carry, requiring scissors or good teeth to open. As for the food - don't bother. No vegetables with meals and it was so dry it was inedible. One fish cake with chips was £7.95 and (I took it completely apart) the fish cake consisted of dry potato with just 2 pieces of fish. It really was horrible. My grandson had chicken nuggets with chips and ate just 2 pieces of chicken and half a chip - said 'it's nasty, Nanna'!

We were on a day trip in Whitby. We decided to visit the Habour Veiw Fish Restaurant. We had visited a few years previous and was very satisfied. We realised the ownership had changed but we were very satisfied with the standard of our meal.

I am an elderly lady, and rely on my mobile to keep in touch with my children. I was on a coach trip for a few days in Whitby, and had lunch at the Harbour View. When leaving the restaurant, unknown to me I had left my phone behind. Rob very kindly found it, and sent text messages to the last texts I had received, including making people aware I was ok, and I was not ignoring text message coming in! He soon found out my address, and returned it to me by recorded delivery, for which I am extremely grateful. A massive thank you to Rob Stringer, outstanding service way beyond the call of duty. We definitely would recommend this restaurant, and will return again.

Downstairs it looked like any old cafe but when we went in we were shown upstairs. This was much posher. There were chandeliers and the tables were not crowded together.

Called here Goth weekend after trying normal takeaways and finding them already shut. It's more of a restaurant with food cooked to order, so expect a wait even if getting takeaway, but it is worth the wait.

Harbour View Cafe serves a delicious fish and chips meal, the batter was light and crisp and the service was very good. The cafe does not look welcoming as the downstairs is very dark. Upstairs is much brighter but the decoration, although clean is a bit dull. Don't let that put you off, for just under £11 you can have a huge portion of delicious battered fish, lovely chips, mushy peas, bread and butter and a drink. I could not finish mine even though I really wanted to!

We'd eaten here a few years ago, then last year we went and it was closed but soon to re-open. So when we visited Whitby last week we went to see if it was open. Sadly the lovely fish and chips does not make up for poor service and feel freezing.

The menu looked really good. But we had eaten a big breakfast at our hotel, so only managed a portion of take away chips. They were so good , we returned the following day for more.

This restaurant hides its laurels behind a very unimposing facade. It does not look inviting. The ground floor area is not well lit and seems it could do with some TLC. How wrong we were. Enter through the door, go upstairs to the Ballroom Dining area and it is well lit with a view over the rooftops to Whitby Harbour. The room was very clean and the tables were immaculate. A very pleasant waitress took our order for four diners. We ordered the Fish and Chip special (Cod, Chips, Mushy Peas, Bread and Butter and Tea) for three of us and Scampi and Chips for the fourth member of the group. Following a very slight hiccup with our order the staff were brilliant and the problem was instantly solved. First class customer service and attention with apologies. That said the meal itself was very well prepared, the food was hot and piping and the tis was very fresh. This was some of the best fish and chips we have had in recent months. We will certainly eat at the Harbour View Cafe on our next visit to Whitby.

In all honesty i thought this might have been a mistake when we rolled up. It was quiet inside and to be fair its a little cold and not as inviting as it could be decor wise (warmer colours on the walls would make a world of difference). People kept leaving when they came in too which was odd. That said this was a really nice fish and chips place. I loved the peas it came with bothams bread and a nice brew. Lovely chips and fresh fish in crisp batter. I would most definitely return. It was £10.95 but that was your full meal and drink which really isn't bad. they also let in dogs which shame on all the other Whitby fisheries as most of them don't. I would eat here again without hesitation.

We ordered cod, chips and mushy peas, didn't have to wait long for it and it tasted delicious and the portions were very generous. The staff were friendly, the restaurant and toilets were clean and I would recommend it again. There is an upstairs dining area which I didn't look at but this appeared popular so this could be where the "Harbour View" comes in. Also dog friendly which is a nice touch.

Visited as we saw the sign saying they were dog friendly. They weren't over busy which was a shame as the food was excellent, crispy batter, not too thick, tasty fish and the best chips I've had in a while. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The toilets were absolutely spotless.

Why is it that fish and chips taste so much better in Whitby? This little cosy cafe is no exception albeit we did wait a while but it really was worth it! I had cod and chips and my husband the fisherman's platter both were delicious. We compared this to The Magpie where we had lunch 2 days later and have to say that this was better. Will definitely eat here again when next back in Whitby.

After walking around Whitby on a cold and snowy day we decided to go for a fish and chip dinner. This chippy is decent, but cold especially when sat downstairs when the door keeps opening and closing. We had the specials from the menu. The only downfall was that we had to wait quite a while for our meal this was the only complaint. When it arrived though, my goodness is was hot and delicious. The chippy is dog friendly too, so if you and your dog feel hungry I would advise you to try this place, we did and we wasn't disappointed.

Gluten free batter was light and crisp with no trace of grease. Husband enjoyed his "normal" fish and chips. Also pleased that they were happy to allow our dog in the cafe. Good welcome and service as well.

It was a busy day for the chippy. But the food wasn't good. The chips were greasy. The fish was very very very small, the fish was all greasy batter. They were not cheap either. First and last time.

Went for lunch on Tuesday, 5th Nov. Lovely lady showed me and hubby to a seat. We ordered fish & chip special, which included bread and tea for £18 each. It was quickly brought to us and was delicious. The batter on the fish was really good.
