Hanney Spice in Vale of White Horse

We arrived with at least 50 minutes until closing time, just two of us. When we asked to order a started then when we decided our main we would order shortly , we were told "no, you have to order both, our kitchen needs to know" so we did, we then were sat eating and the lights went off for a few seconds then back on again. No apology, nothing said, then it happened again. We then asked if we could take what food we had left home with us, man gives us boxes for us to do ourselves!!! Wouldn't have minded but again, nothing said, no pleasantries. Abominable service, will definatley not be going back.

Awful food! Be warned as just picked up my takeaway and the place was empty I can see why!! Onion bhajis were small, hard & burnt. My vegetable curry was just full of sweetcorn & carrots and way too sweet! I won't be back to sit in or take out!

Amazing, fresh, tasty food. Good service and good prepared quickly. Reasonably priced. Good parking.

Excellent food but the restaurant was extremely cold and completely spoilt the evening. One person already eating in their winter coat. Just not acceptable on any level.

We've been visiting Hanney Spice for several years now - good value, great food and friendly service.

Such rude staff at this restaurant! Not impressed at all and definitely won’t be visiting again! I had to ask 3 times for a glass of water for my son and myself (after we had ordered drinks when we arrived) The water was then put on the table without a word. Food was bland (even the couple on the table next to us were complaining about the gentleman’s meal) When it came to paying, the chap held out the card device and tapped abruptly where I needed to hold my card (!) without saying a word - please or thank you perhaps?! I then paid and he didn’t say anything (again thank you would of been appropriate) I was furious by this point and looked at him until he said something and at this point he simply barked ‘ok’. Not even a thank you as we left. My 14 year old son showed more manners by saying thank you. There are plenty more lovely restaurants surrounding Wantage and I wish we had chosen one of them instead. £45 for a very average meal and awful customer service. Not recommended.

The food was lovely, the staff were not! There was one older waiter who was abrupt and dismissive. We had to wait ages just to get a drink- there were only 2 other tables. He wasn’t interested in being there, he stood at the bar reading the paper with a bar full of dirty glasses. We would have had another drink if we had been offered but we weren’t asked so that was £20-£30 just from one table if 6 they missed out on. I have to reiterate that the food was lovely, it was just one person who put a dampener on our evening

Chicken tikka and cheese naan bread was tasteless, the chicken was not tikka it was plain with little or no seasoning. Undercooked raw, cold chips. Very small portion of rice which was cold (amazing to say we collected it). Kashmir curry is usually sweet, creamy and rich … the worst Kashmir I have had. The restaurant was very busy, 10 minute queuing to pay then 30 minute wait for meal. If you are busy and you cannot cater for people, rather than taking on too many orders and providing poor quality food, just tell people you are fully booked/don’t have capacity to cook more orders at this time. Such a shame as local and handy. Disappointed, waste of money.

Service very good polite and respectful. Food is of a reasonable price and quite large portions. First visit here will defo return but may skip lunch so we don’t have so much to bring home

Well where shall i start? We are staying somewhere close to this restaurant and as a family we decided to have indian for our first day of our holiday.After a long wait for waiter I ordered butter chicken but it was more like korma,. Everything taste so bland except naan bread. I would enjoy more if i bought indian food from tesco. The waiter was not kind at all. Do not waste your money

Bangladeshi food nicely cooked and presented. Popular with locals who predominate with takeaway meals. Very good portions beware of overordering! Jalfrezi, King Prawn Karai our favourites. Vindaloo on the milder side. Rice presented perfectly cooked individual grains apparent as we like it. Gobi aloo fitting side. Tarka Dhall can be a little thin at busy times please note. Draught Cobra the perfect accompaniment. Superb waitering from Hamzah. If I had one criticism it is that the frontage of the building needs renovation. Enjoy the curry, you won’t be disappointed.

We regularly get takeaway food from here and it never disappoints. Wonderful and varied menu, always delicious. Lovely staff.

I popped in for a takeaway. The staff were friendly and they seem to be taking the pandemic very seriously. They only allow a few people inside at any time and remind you to keep socially distanced. I felt really safe and looked after. The food was amazing as always. I will be back again. Have to support the local independent restaurants.

Consistently good food, although we use it mainly as a takeaway. Eating in it can be quiet, but when full it's fine. The usual main dishes, plus specialities. Can't vouch for the (unnecessary) stuff like ostrich. Had takeaway today. Just to add - it's grossly unfair that a single (bad) two year old review is first to pop up when googling this restaurant. Shame on Google and Tripadvisor.

Seriously, hands down the best Indian I’ve ever eaten. It was spot on with all the spices & really tasty and satisfying. I would recommend to anyone and the service was great. Loved how on it they were due to all the Covid restrictions at the moment, so thank you!

Not good not hot nearly cold four pieces of chicken and a pile of onion as a bulk filler very dissatisfied won’t return

We have been looking for a nice Indian restaurant for a while and decided to try Hanney Spice, when we arrived first impressions were it looked like a nice place. And we weren’t wrong. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food didn’t disappoint. It is probably one of the best meals we have had for a while. Food was hot, flavoursome and plentiful.Did wonder if we had a made a good choice once we read the reviews, and I am glad we ignored them and went and made our own minds up. We can’t wait to go back again.

Cosy restaurant with a varied and absolutely delicious menu - they never disappoint. Very friendly and efficient staff.

Took the family to Hanney Spice. The second time I have visited. The food is average, the service is disgusting, they have a monopoly in the area and take advantage of the community. Shameful pace of service and they DON’T CARE! I would rather starve than visit this place again. They should be ashamed of themselves, my father even tried to let the owner know gently, but he did not give a monkeys! It seems as long as you are making money you don’t need to care about your customers. They need two more staff but will not hire because greed prevents it.

Great food, with a varied vegetarian choice. Nothing overly special, just good quality, classic British Indian curry. Unfortunately the restaurant seems a little too large for their kitchen capacity so we had to wait a while for food. Nice to see a local business so busy though. Parking outside.

Visited here with a large group of 12 celebrating my friend's daughters 18th. There was a table of 4 and a table of 8 already in the restaurant when we arrived just after 7pm.40 minutes passed and our drinks order was taken - these were subsequently served. We then had to chase up poppadums and go to the bar to ask for more drinks. Another half hour passed and finally our food orders were taken, we all decided not to have starters as it was starting to get late and there were two under 5's with us who were getting a little fidgety despite having the whole restaurant's Christmas crackers to play with.Again, we had to ask for more drinks, they were not offered. In the meantime the other tables got their food served and a fair few takeaways were collected.Our food finally arrived after 9pm - we were past it by then, two hours we had been there! I forgot to take the obligatory photo of our dishes as we just needed feeding. The food was ok - I'd like to have said that it was worth the wait, but it wasn't - I had chicken jalfrezi and hubbie had chicken madras - they both looked exactly the same apart from a couple of peppers and chillis floating in mine. If we hadn't been part of the birthday group we would have walked out ages before and grabbed a takeaway on the way home!! The staff were pleasant enough, but just SO SLOW and not attentive to the customers needs - ie feeding and providing drinks.Will not be returning in the foreseeable future. It did appear that the takeaway side of the business was busy and of course, by phoning your order through - there was no waiting!!!

This is a standalone Indian restaurant in a small village in Oxfordshire... the local pub had to be bought out by villagers to keep open... so I guess the community is grateful to have a restaurant in its vicinity. I was going to judge the place based on this: How can you expect to judge a local Indian which serves the community in the same way as a major restaurant in Hong Kong? The truth is you have to... Not to do so would be unfair to those exceptional small restaurants which exist "off the beaten track" in so many countries around the world. It was a quiet evening; one other table of two. Despite the slow night, the service was unattentive ... Not rude in any way and maybe just having forgot what delivering great service meant. I had to ask for drinks... the waiter was eating his own food at the bar. Seemingly unaware of what digestive process he was sharing with others. The kitchen door was open throughout the evening, with loud conversation being heard by all... often sounding heated. The waiter made no attempt to close the door and ensure customers weren't exposed to this. The food was mediocre to poor. Part of the chicken tikka was inedible with cubes of chicken unable to be cut through. The butter chicken was chicken pasanda. The dahl however was nice and garlicy. The lamb madras was ok, just ok.I hoped more from a local restaurant. I expected more. Certainly I wanted service which cared and was keen to serve. Certainly I wanted more than basic Indian food.

We visited here with some friends as the men shared birthday weekend in October.We had starters and main courses which were delicious a variety of mixed starters and mains from passanda to madras and tikka massala.We had poppadoms as an appetizer with chutney etc.The only down fall was service from taking drinks order to bringing them to table had to be reminded to the waiter a couple of times as the men had drunk their beers before we had even got ours (and no they didn't down them in one :) .)We only come here occasionally as a special treat and it is a nice atmosphere and friendly.We would recommend anyone to come here that loves indian food you will not be disappointed with their quality it is first class.

Have to say, that after slating this place some six months ago, that my visit on Sunday was marvellous. Service with a smile and great food.

My wife and I have visited Hanney Spice 2-3 times a month for the past three/four years, always enjoyable - food and service good. Occasionally when busy, waiting times between courses can get lengthy but hey-ho !

20 minutes after opening, there was a man hoovering and that stayed in the middle of the restaurant during our brief visit. My friend asked for a different glass as there was a chip in it and got a filthy look. The waiter just swopped it with a glass from another table. Have been to Hanney Spice several times and always ordered several starters rather than a main, leaving room for a dessert. This time the rude waiter said we couldn't order starters without a main and was very insistent about it, so we left. He followed us into the car park, saying we had to pay for what we'd ordered and was told to go away. He then said the chef would cook just starters, as if he was doing us a favour! Well done, Hanney Spice, for losing 2 customers in such a short time. No wonder your restaurant was empty. Needless to say, we went elsewhere and got starters, dessert and good service.

This is my second visit to Hanney Spice. I first visited back in 2016. I have to say that the quality of food remains very high. The service was also at a similarly high level.

We ate here on recommendation of our Air B&B; host and we loved it! The food was so delicious we ate here two nights in a row! We tried a large variety of their dishes and each and every one was fabulous! Our favorite waiter Burhan who was such a delight and very attentive. Would definitely recommend to everyone and kudos to the chefs who we also met.

In my opinion it's like you may as well go to Waitrose and pick up a takeaway curry. When you go to this restaurant ! If you go to this so called restaurant! be warned it's like a HOUSE so when you are eating it's like sitting in someone's living room! The food WAS VERY BASIC and reheated ! REALLY BAD EXPERIENCE NEVER COMING BACK and will never recommend this place to anyone ! Don't waste you money coming here

Well I have to say the curry here is the best in the area. The menu has a great variety and choice and the curry is to die for! Would highly recommend! I will certainly be back and will try dining in next time.

A tiny rural Oxfordshire village is not where you would expect to find an Indian restaurant - but If you want to lunch like a king then try this place on a wet Tuesday. I was the only person eating in yesterday lunchtime and they didn't seem to be particularly distracted by take-aways so I received very attentive service. The tables were beautifully laid out with linen tablecloths and napkins. My Garlic Rice (£3.50) and Lamb Pasanda (£8.50) were generously portioned, nicely cooked, and tasty! Conversing with the waiter I discovered that the restaurant was celebrating its 10th anniversary although he had only recently moved down from Leicester to work there.

Ordered a Take Away for 7 people on Saturday 23/9/2017

Been here a lot and the service is never great, however it’s got bad...... really bad. Went there for an early meal and waited nearly two hours for our meal.

Have been here several times in the last 12 months, or had take aways, but have never been as excited about the food as many of the other reviewers. This seems to me to be a pretty average run of the mill Indian restaurant.

We had an excellent evening and meal at Hanney Spice. There were 8 in the party,all had different selections and we were allveryhappy with our selections. Good service in a very pleasant environment.

Just about the best Indian continent food I've tasted. Chicken Dhansak just a right balance between hot and sweet. Friendly staff and willing to cope with any allergens.

The four of us had a lovely dinner in this restaurant located in this quiet village. The staff were very friendly and helpfull all of the time. The food tasted really fresh and authentic.This place is a must if you are in the area anytime. Might be advisable to prebook a table for a Friday or Saturday evening.

Visited on a week day and the place was very quiet. Probably because it's tucked away in a small village.The food was all excellent and there were many vegetarian options. Service was fast and the waiter was very friendly. Faultless food and service. I have had take away from here previously and it was superb.

My husband and I took our 18 month old son for lunch yesterday, the staff were fantastic with Ollie keeping him occupied while we enjoyed a lovely meal.Thank you we will definitely be back very soon!!

Called this week for evening meal with family. Our first time there, food was very good and cooked to perfection. We all had different meals and each one of us thoroughly enjoyed the food. We were on holiday visiting family but when we come back we shall return to this excellent restaurant.

Was a village pub now transformed into Indian restaurant. Good welcome with attentive staff, with plenty table space. Food is of a high standard with a vast choice, so something for everyone

We have been here several times for a meal and to get a takeaway. The restaurant is light and airy and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. The food is fantastic and they have a full and varied menu. We called here the other night and had a great meal. I can recommend the lamb sag.

Went here for the first time after reading reviews. We were left standing at the bar for quite a while by the man behind the bar who seemed confused as to whether we were with the guy picking up a takeaway, waiting to order a takeaway or were here for a sit down meal he told us to wait. Eventually a waiter came thru to show us to our seats. Our starters came king prawn butterfly's with no accompanying sauce like u normally get in other restaurants, so v dry and over spiced. The restaurant was cold the radiator behind me was stone cold the evening outside was chilly and raining so a little heating would have been appreciated. The waiters were not friendly not smiling once during our visit. The mains were ok but nothing to write home about. After clearing those away we waited a long time hoping to be shown the desert menu, it was never offered, in the end I asked for the bill and we left. Wouldn't rush back I'm afraid.

Ate here as 3 couples on a Saturday night. Quite noisy as it was full but noise died down after a while. Food was excellent, only draught beer was Cobra but that was OK, good service

Enjoyed a delicious meal on a Monday evening. Tasty food and great service. When the waiters found out that one of us was celebrating a birthday, they produced a cake with candles - a lovely gesture. Prices very reasonable and a great range of dishes, including some unusual ones. Try the ostrich curry for a change! We will definitely return.

A delightful village location with extremely good food and service. Will definitely revisit,. They also do a take out service that is well used.

We booked fairly short notice for an early table on a Saturday evening (for 7pm). When we arrived the entrance was rammed with take away collecting customers so we were kind of ignored initially. We told them we had a table booked and it was eventually found scribbled on a Post It note on the counter and a table was hurriedly prepared with the serviettes just thrown onto the table. There was one chap behind the desk and one serving and the phone was ringing non-stop.Now, if a place is this popular they really should man the place with sufficient waiting staff and maybe try to think about trying to cordon off an area for collecting customers as the way it is at the moment it really takes the edge of the restaurant aspect having a big gang of people lurking about right by your table.Anyway, food when it came was tasty if not really quite warm enough so my tip would be, book ahead, don't go before 8pm on a Friday or Saturday as you'll be battling with the take away crowd.

Went in for a meal on Monday night, only us in the restaurant, but take away service was busy. The food was ok but the service was not great. We will try again on a week end and I think will have a more informed opinion.

This place simply put is awesome! Staff friendly and helpful. Prices very reasonable. The chef Paul is a top bloke and a top chef. You won't leave here hungry and you won't leave disappointed. Also 10% off on takeaway which is handy! Highly advice chicken pathia... I had never had it before and it's now overtaken jalfrezi as my favourite curry!

Je vous le recommande chaudement, même de faire le détour pour y goûter les spécialités du chef. Il faut se laisser guider, cela aide à faire les bonnes combinaisons. La carte est variée et le choix peut être difficile car on est tenté par beaucoup de choses. En bouche, c'est un festival d'épices et de saveurs sans s'enflammer pour autant.Le service à table est au niveau des plats, l'attente réduite, bref un sans faute.

We dined here on a quiet Tuesday evening, and had a wonderful meal served by polite attentive staff, will definitely be back for more.

Came into the restaurant late after a shift and staff were still very welcoming and able to provide us with some delicious grub and a quick take away service. They also provided us with some cutlery to eat on the go which was very appreciated!

We had booked a table for 8pm. Arrived on the dot to be greeted by a busy restaurant and were told to wait. You could tell that there wasn't a table ready for us as the manager was clearing glasses. We were seated to a table that wasn't prepared. We could sense that there was a wait as quite a few tables still had menus. After 15 mins my partner went to the bar to ask for drinks. When the waiter came over to take our drinks order we wanted to order our food (hoping to jump que). Luckily we did this as we had nearly been seated for an hour before our starters came out. On the cutlery was dumped on the table and we were told to sort it out ourselves. As a couple with a young child, going out for dinner is a special occasion and a rarity. The whole service/ambience experience really let us down. The food however was lovely, good choices and presented well. We took some home with us as there was too much.

Lamb shank - meat fell off the bone. Perfect. Food towards spicy end of scale which suited me. Nice clean pint off tap. Service was great, attentive but not intrusive. Will be coming back again.

... and one, last Saturday, dreadful. Bland ... tasteless ...no effort made.I think we'll look elsewhere now which is a shame.

This is a quality curry house, which is well-managed and has friendly staff. There is parking outside or on the Green. They offer a good variety of dishes with varying tastes.

Nice surroundings, good food, good service. Situated in West Hanney, near Wantage, it is not where you would expect a restaurant/takeaway of this quality to be.

Fantastic food. Fantastic service and good value. What more could I say....? Well there is.Our server in fact all of the staff went out of their ways to make sure we all had a good experience, and they look after our 7 year old daughter, she really enjoyed it too. Something of a rarity, the chef also came out to have a chat with us, this in its own was a special touch. Paul I believed his name to be, fantastic food and was good to meet you. We always go hear for a decent curry. The foods great, well priced, and a friendly service to boot. Take away (pick up only I believe) is always a good bet too. Overall, a great venue and lovely food.

The second takeaway we have had from here, the first time it was not to bad, but i am afraid that this time it was very disappointing. King prawn Masala that still had the shell on! and a lot more sauce than prawn. The other chicken dish was not great either. Such a disappointment when your looking forward to something, and its quite expensive in comparison to some other restaurants in the area.

Simply brilliant food and nice staff. Service was good although under pressure from Takeaway customers. Definitely one of the best indian meals I have had.

Visited Sunday evening so it was quiet. Service was very friendly, fast and attentive, and food excellent. Very tasty and would definitely go back! Moderately priced too and competetive in comparison with other Indian restaurants in the area. Thank you!

So we ordered food for the whole family to take away as a treat, I wish we hadn't bothered. My korma had a strange metallic taste and not one of us would eat it as it tasted rancid and smelt disgusting. The rice was cold and none of the other curries we ordered tasted very good. Resulting in 3 of 5 people being very I'll that night/the next day. Avoid.

Service staff friendly and food excellent, clean restaurant, would recommend. Also their website does state to customers that if you do not see the dish you want to order, they may be able to make it up which is a bonus for some people.

Having booked a table for 7 we were surprised to find that the restaurant had taken bookings for almost every other table for the same time and couldn't cope. It was also obviously peak time for take aways and judging by the way they were going out the door they were getting priority in the kitchen.The papadums arrived after 20 minutes which would have been fine if they weren't dark brown and burnt, they must be the first curry house I've been do that couldn't even get that right. The food took a further 70 minutes to arrive and it definitely wasn't worth the wait, my dish claimed to be a rich spicy sauce with mustard and garlic, it tasted like a very dull buttery sauce with a teaspoon of mustard stirred in to it. The rice was no better than the papadums, the rice was badly overcooked with barely discernible grains of rice in a sloppy mush.This restaurant clearly can't cope at busy times and rather than staggering bookings and delaying takeaway orders is happy to serve barely adequate food and subject customers to very lengthy delays, I can only advise to avoid this restaurant at popular times, maybe the take aways are a lot better.

Me and my other half had booked a table for New Years eve, we were greeted by the staff who were all very polite. We had quick sevice, excellent food and we can't wait to visit again.

By far the best Indian restaurant around and very well looked after!Quite small but perfectly formed.All our meals were tasty and piping hot and would certainly recommend to a friend.

Can't fault Hanney Spice on any level - taste, service and value all top notch. I thoroughly recommend them for eating in, out or for a function.

My wife and I visited the Hanney Spice after driving past on many occassions, when we felt it looked great. In fact the ambience as we arrived at the restaurant was great with good decor and friendly greetings. However there was an office or friends party in the restaurant who appeared to have been there some time although it was only 7pm. We were quickly shown to our table and ordered our bottle of wine from Alsace which turned out to be the best part of the evening, it was excellent. However the noise from the party of 16 or so made conversation very difficult as they shouted across to each other. We ordered starters which were the Onion Bhajis and the Tandoori Chicken. The 4 bhajis served were very small in fact the size of tennis table balls. The Tandoori chicken on the bone was definitely not the very best I had from other similar restaurants. We had ordered main courses of Chiken Tika, Tandoori Chicken off the bone and pilau rice with Peshwari nan bread. Obviously because of the other diners the main course took a very long time to come namely over 45 minutes between finishing our starter and going on to main course.When it arrived the Pilau rice looked very bland in comparison to what we understood to be pilau rice. The main courses were acceptable but again not award winning. However the Peshwari nan was very good.Maybe the evening would have been better had it not been for the other noisy diners, but again my view on the food was based upon the quality and service. Could be worth another visit on an evening in a quieter atmosphere where also the chef is not too busy.

We have been here on several occasions and found the food and the service to be very good indeed. I did have a solo take away last week which was unexciting, but this won't put me off as we have had such good experiences on all previous occasions.

Went here as an 8. We all had special dishes we had not tried before. The food was just great. Freshly cooked, unusual but in a good way. I had this and it was Devine, some sweetness to it which I like in Indian food alongside the heat. Gosth Kata Masala . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Tender Lamb Tikka immersed over night in a marinade of freshly ground spices, prepared in a delicate sauce with chopped garlic, ginger and tamarind sauce, medium hotService was superb, our age range was from 5 and they were great with the kids. When the chef came out it showed he was proud of his food and so he should be. Not too many covers here, out off the road a bit but worth hunting down.Cannot fault it, go and try it. Very reasonable prices as well for the quality.

We have visited here numerous times and have never been disappointed.. Cold beer, great service and excellent food... Making me want to go there now just thinking about it! One word,YUMMY!

Friends had recently moved to the village of West Hanney and they are already considered locals! Very friendly service, tasty food which is fresh and nicely presented. Look forward to returning

Have eaten here several times and always enjoyed it. Also do good takeaways - particularly enjoyed the fish curry I had recently, following helpful advice from the staff. Can be busy with takeaways on a weekend - but following a long wait (half hour?) when collecting a takeaway a few weeks ago, staff apologised for delay and gave us a free beer for the wait - which was much appreciated. Always friendly service and delicious food, so we will definately be back!

We visited this restaurant on the basis of recent reviews and we were not disappointed. There is a very pleasant airy ambience and the service was welcoming and helpful. The food was superb, one of our best Indian experiences.

Was very busy but still an excellent service with delicious food. They didn't mind when I spilt a drink everywhere. Wanted a dessert, was so full! Even got two lollipops after. Will defiantly go again.

Recommend by friend at work. Now regular choice for carry out curry. Lots of flavour and veggies in the curry.

This restaurant spoils us for other Indian restaurants. I don't think I need to say anything else. We are regular visitors as we live locally.

Great tasting food, service is excellent, decor clean and good condition need to book at weekend as it can be busy, some beer can be expensive. Takeaway is good too.

Food excellent, staff were really welcoming and friendly. Great overall experience! Bill came to £42 which we felt was reaonsable given the quality of food (we had curry, rice, naan, vegetable sides and beers). Will definitely be back!
