The receptionist was incredibly rude in every interaction. He seemed annoyed when we asked about the menu and was equally irritated when we inquired about splitting bills. His dismissive attitude when we needed assistance was off-putting. While the food was okay, I will never, ever return due to his behavior. Hopefully, there will be a change in his attitude towards customers in the future.

House of spice is always my go to Indian restaurant. Never had a bad meal from them. They are always polite and attententive. Would recommend to everyone

Glorious dishes - never been disappointed. Even when we’ve rocked up at 23:30 and they squeezed us in for a mid-night-out boost. This is the only curry shop we go to in wantage now.

Last went here seven years ago, the food was so bad it has taken us this long to give it another try. Looked at reviews and it looked ok, no mention of bring your own alcohol though. The two of us were seated and the first thing I noticed was that there was a bring your own policy – I did have an idea this was the case as the table next to us were drinking beer from cans. No worries, off to Sainsburys for me to buy three bottles of Cobra, I asked for a corkscrew and the man who I took as the owner offered a cold bottle in return for one of my warm ones – odd! He came and took our order, I was first to be asked everything, my female partner did not seem to exist, on check back he was not worried about her meal, just mine. We had poppadom’s and pickles; you cannot go wrong here all the pickles were out of the same factory as just about every other Indian in the UK. I ordered a chicken dish stuffed with mince at £14.00 + (Oddly it is over £17.00 on their website) and my partner had a chicken dish at around £11.00. Both contained one breast of chicken cut up and a sauce. It must be remembered that this is over £14.00 and £11.00 for a desert-sized bowl of chicken pieces with sauce. I love curry, I cook it at home, but I must say we could not distinguish the difference between the two dishes, it was a heavy red sauce, mine may have had mince but I did not spot any. Now it got interesting, a couple were seated on the table next to us and ordered two bottles of Cobra, they were asked if they wanted alcoholic or non-alcoholic, they went for the alcohol so, I had wasted my time going to Sainsburys after seeing “Bring Your Own” plastered all over the menu! With our meal we had one naan bread, one potato dish and one pila rice. The bill was an astonishing £63.00, this is without any drinks, they even had the cheek to charge £5.00 corkage for the drinks that I had to go and source even though they sold them in the first place. This was a Friday evening from 7.00, only four tables were occupied, and the restaurant was cold. We all know that restaurants have been hit by fuel hikes and other overheads but maybe bring your prices down and sort the bring your own beer thing out? There are a least two other Indian restaurants in Wantage we may be back in seven years, but I would not hold your breath.

Food is always consistently good and staff are always friendly and courteous.

Woman at the front desk was lovely and welcoming, but unfortunately the portion size was tiny. Every curry we ordered was half full or less. First time I ordered from here they gave normally, proper portions. Picture evidence below, shocked that the cheffs were this stingy at a well known restaurant!

We have had a takeaway from this restaurant a couple of times. The first time was just okay, albeit slightly cold due to slow delivery. We picked up our latest takeaway to make sure it was hot. However although it was reasonably hot (temperature) we all had chicken dishes and all four of our dishes had extremely dry and tough chicken in them. Also the sauces tasted surprisingly similar even though all four dishes were different sauces! Not very impressed with this place and will not be ordering from here again.

A takeout meal for two this time. The standard has slipped since our last meal. Rather bland tasting and a watery sauce Onions on the raw side in the rice dish and chickpeas very firm in the side dish.

Chicken very dry food cold for take away

A great Indian restaurant, serving some old school favourites and some great chefs specials. Can recommend the Tarka Chicken. Plenty of veg options as well. Eat in or takeaway Lots of parking in and around the market square.

We moved to the area 18 months ago and this is the second time we have used this restaurant (both times a takeaway). Last time we came the staff were very welcoming friendly and helpful, and the food was great. Last night we went in to order our food and the chap on the desk was very unfriendly, sullen and very miserable, we felt a bit awkward his one syllable answers were very odd. I hope he is ok he seemed very depressed. The food was really tasty a bit expensive, but isn’t everything right now. We will definitely be ordering food again! Happy New Year to all the staff , we hope your business survives!

The chicken korma is very tasty and naan bread is the best I had so far, really loved the takeaway, thank you, will be ordering again soon

A warm welcome and lovely white tablecloths and ample white napkins set the style for this restaurant in the corner of the lovely wantage market place and the food lived up to it with delicious dishes both vegetarian and meat based. Sag bhaji the best i can recall. They were very upfront that menu prices now had to increase by 10% but they are still more than competitive. Highly recommended.

Not been back to Wantage in ten years , and haven't been out for an Indian in England for over fifteen years (the time spent living in Ireland). Best Indian I've had in decades!!! All dishes were excellent. Really delicious. Next time back in Wantage will definitely be going for an Indian. Staff were all very friendly.

Food was full of oil Masala didn’t taste like it and really watery The food portions are tiny for the price it come to I have a curry at least once a week and we are trying to find another good one near are new house we will get there but 100% this isn’t the one

Difficult to score. All the food tasted good. Unfortunately, in one of the dishes the lamb was a bit dried out and chewy. Yet on another dish the chicken was lovely and moist. The onion bhajis weren't greasy in the slightest but were not cooked properly in the middle. The same with the naans, great on the outside, doughy in the middle. Overall, I would try again as they showed potential. This review was for a takeaway on a Sunday around 6pm. The restaurant had a couple.of occupied tables.

Very disappointed with our meal tonight, the quality was no where near their usual standard. I ordered a lamb pasanda and it had a random half a boiled egg in and the lamb was very hard and tough so couldn't eat it. Also the korma wr ordered was very oily and watery, very strange as normally lovely. Won't be ordering on a hurry again.

This is the first time we have tried House of Spice food as we have just moved to the area. We ordered a takeaway and while we were waiting the staff were very friendly and polite. We have tried another couple of Indian restaurants in Wantage and this is by far the best food. The food was excellent and really tasty. It was excellent value for money too! We will definitely be back. THANKYOU for a lovely meal!

Out and about in a strange town can be difficult when you are looking for somewhere to eat and coming across this restaurant, it looked welcoming o we went in. Friendly welcome good service and excellent food confirmed it as a good choice.

Main dish was really watery. Disappointed as it didn’t tast like tikka at all. The starters were adequate but I really feel let down on the main considering the price

We had a meal for two & were very disappointed with the standard ,the whole meal was over cooked the meat in the Kemanan was non existant unless you good vision to find it . The owner of this takeaway cannot be bothered to even respond to your e mails we will not be going back for the same standard of service again.

We always get our Indian food from these guys. Food is great, the price is reasonable and they have never messed up an order. What's not to like?

Got a takeaway recently after an aversive experience at another wantage Indian takeaway. Really quick, very pleasant as always, and food was tasty and varied. Will be coming again and hope they do well as things re open

Excellent take away from this fab restaurant. All well packaged and generous portions. A great system in place for zero contact collections. Looking forward to when they can fully open again.

We have takeaways from here regularly and are never disappointed, however I am disappointed that they have put the prices up under the pretext of their suppliers doing the same, but I can't see why the Corona virus means prices have to increase, nowhere else as far as I am aware, have prices increased and, if there is an increase for the restaurateur, which I doubt there is, surely it would be minimal, and so for the sake of customer loyalty, would it not be prudent for them to take the hit and show loyalty to their customers,rather than passing it on to their customers.

I have been to this place numerous number of time, the food and the service always outstanding. we had 2 chicken dopiaza, 2 lamb bhona and lamb korai which we enjoyed it thoroughly.

Came with our two children for a Saturday dinner. Restaurant was very busy which I expected as it was a Saturday night. Food was delicious, service excellent. I love how friendly they always are. We have been going here for many years and the food has always been great. Sometimes I’m not sure what to order so I ask for recommendations, they are very helpful and help me make a decision. It’s always clean and tidy and they are great with the kids :) we love this place!

I'm new to the area but this has quickly become my regular, despite an Indian restaurant / takeaway closer to home. Great food, and some different dishes to usual fayre. Very nice and attentive staff who care about the quality of the food they serve. Looking forward to many future orders.

It makes me really sad to say that House of Spice has really gone downhill. This used to be my favorite Indian in Wantage but my partner and I had a takeaway last night which was really quite terrible. Mine was bland, his did not taste quite right and both were incredibly watery. Even the chutneys were unpleasant. Not sure what's happened but really disappointed.

Great food with varietys, great customer service.

My wife and I ate here in late July 2019, and we weren't very impressed. Service was ok but slow (despite there being only one other person at one other table). But the food, when it came, comprised three dishes all having exactly the same yellow colour. (I guess the same sauce base had been used for them all). It didn't taste bad, but it was disappointing to look at, and the flavours were nothing to write home about. All in all, a disappointing experience, I'm afraid. Restaurants serving food from the Indian sub-continent can do so much better than this (I know for sure, having eaten at the wonderful one in Henley-on-Thames). Our meal cost £55 (including the tip), so we weren't very impressed.

I use this restaurant all the time, mainly for take away but have also eaten in quite a few times too. The staff are always friendly and very polite. They keep a cracking pint of cobra and I would definitely recommend it!

Real authentic Indian food.... The real delicacy of INDIA....... VERY HYGIENIC and no comparison on TASTE.... went once for a drop in quick late lunch and ended up with several regular visits every week... And a must for occasional large family get together specially during CHRISTMAS.. WILL RATE 10 ON 10 AND I WILL RECOMMEND HIGHLY

Visited on Saturday night with friends from the North East who have the South Shields curry mile on their doorstep so a bit of pressure for the House of Spice. We all had starters and mains and couldn't fault anything, just wish we had ordered more of the lovely naan bread. The food was hot, tasty and very nicely presented. The services was excellent, the staff were attentive and extremely pleasant. Got a big thumbs up from our visitors so well done House of Spice - we will be back soon.

After a lovely evening in Wantage with friends we decided to finish the evening of with a nice meal but all four of us were very disappointed food was tasteless none of us could eat it and after pointing this out the staff were very rude and said there was nothing wrong with it so we paid the bill and left never to return again

I came here for a meal with family and friends for my birthday. All food was very nice and very tasty. Only fault was the service could have been alot quicker.

Visited recently on a Friday evening. Food and service was very good. Meat very tender. Lamb was excellent. Nans also very fresh.

Have been in many Indian restaraunts in my time around the country and abroad but without a doubt this is the best ever. Okay i always eat the same dish in whatever place i end up.Onion bhaji and Chicken Tikka Masala with pilau rice. Not over exciting i know. But without fail this place is the dogs doodas. Great staff and unbelievable food served quickly just the best ever.When in town the only place to eat!A must go.

I went to the house of spice as my partner and I fancied a takeaway as we recently moved in to area. Staff were friendly food was warm when we arived home from collecting. Portion size was good nice amount of flovor and good taste. Would happily use as local takway.

Having been to all 3 local Indian restaurants they are all different in atmosphere but decent choices. We had a nice family meal here recently with friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and good food.

Food is good but every time I come here I feel like the staff are rushing us out the door after we've eaten.

Family tradition has always been to meet with friends on Christmas Eve and head to a local restaurant. This time we got ripped off and were overcharged and the waiter couldn’t care less. We won’t be back and neither will our friends!

Just had our Christmas Eve meal here. Wow! Awesome. Brilliant meal, great service, lovely atmospher, well worth a visit.. Oh, and good value😁.

I've been going to House of Spice since it opened over 10 years ago. It's my regular, local Indian and the food is always freshly prepared and good, the service is always friendly.

Meal for two; it was nice. I had one of the special dishes which I didn’t realise had egg and chicken in the same dish (a personal no-no!!). Service was good and attentive. Clean premises.

Had the most delicious and moist mixed tandoori grill and chicken biriyani. Best one I've had yet. Really friendly and accommodating staff..... ! At the end me and my daughters were given a beautiful rose each which was a lovely touch. will definitely go back again.

Visited over the weekend. The food really was delicious. Lovely and warm atmosphere, the staff were very attentive and helpful. This will definitely become one of our regulars. Highly recommended. Not many restaurants around anymore that are so original.

Most definitely one of the most authentic restaurants I have been to in Oxfordshire for South-East Asian food. Service is very quick and efficient, which some customers may have found to have been a bit stressful, however given it is a small restaurant in a small town, this makes sense. Overall, the manager and staff were very friendly, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was very nice. Would definitely recommend to anybody in the area.

Been here visiting the Diamond. Had to stay in Wantage and got here super late. Owner and waiter were very nice and kind other than helpful. Wide choice on the menu, so it was hard to pick something but everything tasted really good. Got back with colleagues and I haven't got beaten so they also liked it. Approved and suggested.

Been here for take away several times and it's absolutely brilliant every time. Food is freshly done and full of flavour. They are also super flexible with whatever dish you want, a starter as a main, a dish that's not on the menu, any meat dish to vegetarian... they have it covered. Staff are super friendly and got a lovely atmosphere!! Highly recommended

Very small portions, cold, greasy and over priced, I thought I would give this takeaway a 2nd chance but again it was very disserpointing, NEVER AGAIN, COLD, greasy & poor value. 4 out of 10. The photo of my food costs £15.60 with garlic nan it was NOT tasty and cold LUKE WARM. Poor value

On a business trip and decided to pop in for a curry. Staff very pleasant and helpful one downside is the restaurant was not very warm, one customer sat with his jacket on all night! Food is ok most likely average, not the worst I have tried but certainly not the best, however after a long day still better than a take away. Will we back yes we will

Our daughter and her fiancé asked if we would like to join them on New Year's Eve at the House of Spice. We have been there numerous times before and always enjoyed the food and had good service BUT on New Year's Eve we arrived at 8.40 and didn't get our starters for AN HOUR - we had been given poppadoms and our daughter had to catch someone to ask if they would take our order - why - because the restaurant were more interested in making sure people who had place orders to collect had their requests completed first - I always thought that considering the money spent in their restaurant that us, as customers should have been given preferential treatment - lesson to learn for them either have customers in the restaurant OR do take-aways on a night like that. Very disappointment with the owners.

We usually take food home from here but have also used the sit-down restaurant in the past. Never disappointed. The food is perfectly cooked and very tasty. The vegetarian selection is great. Always something to enjoy, with plenty of choice. The staff are always charming, friendly and polite.

I booked house of spice for a large group of 20 to celebrate my Birthday.

Spent over one hour waiting to order main, starter removed proir to order though still not finished then had to argue over bill when had finally had enough and just wished to leave, Am local to the area and had eaten there before. Not really sure what was going on but really cannot recommend

Had a takeaway,food excellent.It was ready for collection when I arrived.Food was hot and very tasty.Haven't had anything from here for about a year but very good food and good value.20% off collected orders over £15 so even better value

This a great option for who is looking for a great Indian food. Service is good, starters and main dishes perfect. Price is not high so its definitely a good alternative in Wantage.

The best curry house I have come across anywhere for a long time.

This is our local takeaway - we don't usually dine inside but we did so recently, with greatest pleasure. Service charming and attentive. Flavours fresh and exciting. Every dish a taste experience. The menu has great variety, for vegetarians too.

Not been in for a while but great curry. Everything fresh and tasty. Still nice ambience and a warm welcome from the staff.

Have to say I was very disappointed here.Almost before you have been seated, the 'Drinks' order is being sought followed immediately by the 'Popadum Push'.Fending the staff off to enable us to get our breath back, we eventually ordered our food and gave our drinks order to the waiter.Service was pretty quick to be honest but on arriva, I was less than impressed.My Lamb Keema Bhoona was a bit too greasy for my liking which was a similar problem with my wife's Mixed Veg Curry.The Onion Bhajis (3 to a portion) were not too bad. Nice a crisp, reasonable size but served without any accompanying yoghurt or similar dip.A visit to the toilet, which can often let a place down, was very revealing. The place was dire. Looked as if it needed a good scrub, walls, floor and the general fittings were rusted or simply 'past their sell by date'. Can't really understand the rating of 4 given by the FSA - unless toilets don't feature in the check.On a positive note, we were first timers to the restaurant and my wife was presented with a lovely single stem red rose. A nice little touch but not one which would attract me back to the restaurant.
