Fire place on all day, lovely staff, good choice of beer, well kept beer. What more can one ask for.

Gorgeous views, and a quick and easy drive from Macclesfield. We sat in the outside covered hut as it was very windy and it was a lovely spot to stop for a drink.

Limited opening times, food not available but great atmosphere.

Great food. Parking on site. We was a table of 13 food arrived quick and was tasty. Decorated all christmassy and festive my little boy loved it very cosy place.

Great pint, Great views, Great historical pub. The owners are very friendly and welcoming. The pub has so much potential in regards to the future plans highlighted on their website, i.e. accommodation, restaurant, etc.. These plans can come to fruition if we all support a brilliant small business in Macclesfield Forrest.

No dogs allowed in the pub. It was too windy to sit outside so didn't stop, so we cannot comment on food, service and atmosphere. 3 stars because no dogs allowed inside. Drove to an alternative pub not far away where we knew we could take our dog inside. Disappointed that we could not take our dog in. We wanted to help support the current owners as we were aware of the struggles they had encountered since taking over the establishment. First spoke to them during lockdown in 2020, attempted 2021 & 2022 both times were on days/times that they were not open.

Stopped off for a refreshing pint mid hike. We were made to feel really welcome. Great to see all the work being done on a very special venue. Can't wait to see the developments.

Best Calzone outside of Italy (I expect better than many inside too). The location is worth the trip.

my boyfriend and i visited for pizza and a beer after a busy week at work. The staff were beyond lovely. the pizza was £11 each and for half a moretti and a full moretti it was £8,40. The view was gorgeous and we watched the sunset. We will visit again. The ground/steps make it not wheelchair friendly but i think if you rang prior i'm sure the staff would go above and beyond to cater to you

Great country pub with amazing food. We were with our dog so we could not go inside but they have two outside seating areas and a ne deck are being built below. Best view will the lower deck and I think it will be finished by 15th July 23. That will be the place to take your special friend and your dog with 2 pints and a pizza from the outside kitchen and enjoy the most amazing view. No shelter outside so make sure it's a nice day. They are closed Mon, Tues and Wednesday.

What a cracking job they've done of restoring this once great walkers pub. It's now as attractive inside as out and that takes some doing! Perfection. Two local breweries' ales to choose from so I had to have both - more perfection.

So pleased this pub has reopened! It's an absolute beauty... Views to treasure and ran by a lovely family... Please thank your son for the 🐄 for my son! 👌 Can't wait for the full reopening of the pub and looking forward to being able to get over to the 'pop up' kitchens you have.... The best Guinness this side of Shap!

Fascinating view and indoor fire place has made this place my favourite. Highly recommended. their super friendly intelligent dog makes you get relaxed.

Called in for first time just passing desparate for some food. Amazing pizza shack at the rear that also does good coffee and cake. A lot of walkers and cyclists seem to frequent - you buy your pizza outside, and if you want to sit in the pub and have a beer, they will bring food to your table. Landlord very welcoming and have the dog a treat. They even supply hard hats at the door for the low beam 😂. Looks like they are building an outside seating area on a viewing deck at the rear which will be cool when finished. Will definitely return...

Called in here on Sunday, when passing by bike on an incredibly hot day. Not been there in 50 years ( seriously). What a great place - it has been beautifully renovated, the service was friendly and welcoming. The only problem I had was that after a pint of the excellent beer on offer, I wanted another! Judging by my very small sample the prices seemed more than reasonable too. The solid stone walls and an open window made it feel like it was fitted with very powerful airconditioning. I must try and get back a little more frequently!

Great pub with beautiful views!

Really welcoming friendly staff lovely and clean. There was a BBQ on when we came across this gem of a pub, and the food was lovely also. We will make this a regular stop off.

Deserves much success after (and during) its renewal. Pleasant owners, cosy and redecorated to the highest of standards. The view from outside tables is stunning, and hopefully, that'll be one available indoors in the not too distant future. Rooms will be available in the not too distantfuture as well, by all accounts, providing an excellent base to explore the beautiful local countryside.

This is a wonderful Country Pub and the owners are lovely and very decent Patient Folk who do an excellent job, in very tough Economic Brexit/ Covid times in a now third world country. After reading the moronic and Woke comments left by a previous reviewer, i can only say thank god that at least 45% of the UK Public should be able to comprehend what utter stupidity it was. Once again a WONDERFUL PUB very well run, selling Lovely ALE and hosting superb pop up food events.

Nice pub, relaxed vibe when we went on a Saturday, middle of nowhere. The ruined abbey just down the way is interesting.

I visited this Saturday with my partner and dog, we absolutely love the Hanging Gate and Hilary and James are so welcoming and friendly. We have sampled the food vans that they regularly have including Pizza. Spanish and Caribbean and Barbacue food and there always absolutely delicious. The pub looks absolutely beautiful and all there hard work has paid off, so cosy and nice xx

Very rude passive aggressive lady. We pulled up the car to look at the view and look for the public footpath between this pub and the beautiful Ryles Arms. We asked the lady where the path was, which she vaguely pointed us towards. But then said "this is a pub, not a public carpark" in a passive agressive sarcastic tone. It was 11am, the pub didn't open till 4pm, the car park was empty. We weren't exactly stopping customers parking! We were planning on doing some walks, getting some lunch (as they don't serve food) and then coming back up for drinks. But not worth it with that petty ridiculous attitude.

Visited yesterday afternoon during a wonderful group walk/pub crawl around the amazing Cheshire countryside. Pleasant welcome, nice outdoor seating area with good views. But very surprised by landlord refusing to let Duke of Edinburgh kids use outside toilets on their way passing through. He actually stood guard outside to stop them. Don’t know the history but seemed more than a little mean spirited.

Fantastic place for a relaxing pint. Go try it yourself and I'm sure you will agree 👍

Such a special place. So lucky to have this in our area. Quality service, superb beer and a view unrivalled anywhere in Cheshire.

Lovely food and drink. Only pizza at the moment. But excellent. Great setting, the steps down to the decking not too good if you have any mobility issues. Hence 4 stars.

Love sitting on the decking overlooking the fabulous view. All staff very friendly.

Breathtaking views from this beautiful landmark pub. James and Hillary have done a remarkable job in restoring the place. Outside table service at the moment with a great range of beers ciders and lager on draught. Watch out for the special meal days of pizza or even fish and chips with a glass of wine!

I don't really want to rate The Hanging Gate as I may limit my chances of getting a table. The view and the sunset from there are hard to beat.

Came here for lunch on the last ever day of service before it closed its doors as a pub forever. The Hanging Gate will be converted into a house. End of an era

Lovely warm fire and welcome with a good pint of beer. Purfect.

Went for lunch today with our friends, four of us.

Visited today with family and what a lovely lunch. Our waitress was lovely and attentive, nothing was too much trouble. The atmosphere is relaxed and chilled. The food excellent. We had ham and eggs, flat iron stake and prawn with pac choi. Absolutely gorgeous. Excellent value, well worth a visit

we rocked up with no notice. Had been out on a day with the family and all needed to eat. as usual, the place was pretty full as its sooo good but they managed to squeeze us in and accomodate us. we were not disappointed as the food was cooked to perfection and the peole are just lovely. Thanks once again to a great staff for a fantastic experience.

Just to say how much we all enjoyed our meal at the Hanging Gate on Saturday night. The food was gorgeous and it was a really nice atmosphere too. I think we all agreed that we would very much like to come back again!

A lovely place with a great view looking towards Wales. Food was tasty and staff were friendly. I would imagine you need to book for a Sunday lunch as it was full but well worth visiting if you want a walk or just food.

I would argue that this pub has one of the best views of any place I've visited.

My wife and I had an excellent lunch, a bit pricey but worth it. It was quiet (on a Thursday), normally more busy. The service was great, very helpful bar lady made us most welcome. Good beer (Hydes). Could bring dog into bar (but not restaurant) This pub is in a fantastic spot, with amazing views across the Cheshire plain. It is also in great walking country. Full marks!

We were really pleased to find extra nappies, nappy wipes and nappy bags in the changing room here, along with a toy to keep your little one entertained. Small things like this can make a really big difference when you're eating out with a baby. There were also lots of complimentary colouring sheets and felt tip pens to keep our three year old happy. So we felt really welcome here as a family. The food was great too and the staff were very friendly. We'd definitely come back.

Have always loved the Hanging Gate on a sunny day and this was the first time I've been since the new team started here. I came for lunch with family on a busy Sunday lunchtime.

We took some family members for the 5 course taster menu and it was excellent. Great food and wine flight, relaxed atmosphere with friendly service and a magnificent view. For a small pub and limited team this place is exceptional. Highly recommended.

Expensive Sunday lunch with a party - not inspirational...food did not appear to have been cooked to order more assembled. No options for children. Lack of atmosphere in dining room and waiting staff poor. Other than the magnificent view, nothing to recommend.

We love this Pub and my last review was in July 2014. The staff was usual were brilliant and helpful. The main dining area offered a beautiful panoramic view. Our intention was to have lunch after the walk but sadly they closed at 2.00pm and we had to go elsewhere.

In the company of my part lover and full time friend I was guided to the hanging gate Inn, one of many secrets she has kept hidden from me for many years. The staff were refreshingly surly as they wished to close and people had the audacity to keep turning up. However this in no way could detract from the stunning views of Cheshire Macclesfield and Manchester from the large decking area at the rear. Situated at the top of the hills south of Macclesfield the Hanging Gate is ideal for a drive out or as a starting point for walks across the tops. I am assured that the food is of the highest quality with the taster plater being highly recommended. Could be easily tied in with a visit to the nearby Sutton Hall.
