If you have never been to this restaurant it's a must to try. My favourite restaurant I just have to think of an occasion to visit. As a special treat

Tasting menu superb, staff were lovely, wine list interesting. Decor is relaxing contemporary, overall we had a really enjoyable meal and would recommend.

How lovely to visit the hammer and pincers for a very special fish based menu. A booked up evening created a lovely atmosphere and our table of 4 enjoyed an array of fish dishes but I will not spoil your surprise by sharing dish details because they may decide to do it again. For a romantic evening, going the extra mile, you have the beautiful setting of the village that the hammer sits in. I admit for trip advisor visitors, My partner and I are local to the hammer, but I always give an honest review and my experiences at this restaurant have always resulted in me waking the next morning and saying "what a great evening" We were a table of 4 so couples catch ups or business special dinners are not out of place here. The team are hard working and attentive, just what you need because its not your average £16 main course dining venue.. but then sometimes I don't want that, I want innovation in food, I want an experience, I want extravagance and I want to feel super special for the evening. One of the best meals I have ever had. A relaxing and gracious dining room with interesting art and carefully chosen furnishings. Charming and efficient service throughout. Portions were just right - a manageable size with quality clearly prioritised over quantity. .Menu was generous with little treats between courses. Food was exquisitely prepared and presented - not a duff mouthful from start to finish, lots of interesting flavour combinations and locally sourced elements. Helpfully but not pretentiously explained by the waiting staff. A lovely evening. We will be back.

An absolutely superb lunch today at Hammer and Pincers…. Each course was an absolute delight. The date and Guineas bread with chicken fat and thyme butter was THE most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten and the Hake dish was a blend of absolutely amazing flavours. The staff are an absolute dream and we were disappointed it came to an end. Just relieved we don’t live too locally as we’d be dining in this absolute gem of a restaurant all the time. Will definitely return and highly highly recommend.

Fabulous food and superb service. The Chateaubriand evening was memorable with incredible tasty food. Could not ask for better.

Taken for the set lunch on my birthday and we were completely bowled over by how impressive it all was. There was an amuse bouche of artichoke, mushroom and truffle tart which started it all off beautifully. Treacle sourdough came with chicken flavoured butter ( delicious) hubby had the Japanese trout starter ( lovely) and I has asparagus and goats cheese ( my favourite things ) just fabulous. Next course was cod for me hare for hubby - loved both. A palate cleaner of cucumber and fennel ice cream was a pleasant surprise. Hubby had the Stilton cake for pudding ( outstanding) and I had the Basque cheesecake and strawberries ( another of my favourites). We finished with coffee and hand made chocs ( also for sale). Service was friendly and we would happily return.

We were looking for a nice meal to break up our journey home at the end of a holiday and found this restaurant from great reviews online. We were given a nice welcome and the staff were all friendly and helpful throughout. We decided to have the six course taster menu accompanied by a non alcoholic cocktail with each course. They happily provided an alternative to one of the dishes on the menu as it contained something we disliked and we found all the courses to be tasty and imaginative and the cocktails complimented the dishes well. The restaurant was full at lunch time and it was clear that there were a lot of returning customers so it was clear that we weren't the only ones who admired the quality of the food and service provided.

Had a fantastic birthday lunch. Food was incredible and really good value considering the quality. The deer kofta starter was absolutely delicious. Service was also excellent.

Just had a super lunch here. Every course was absolutely delicious and in fact it was the best meal we've had out in ages. Fantastic knowledgeable waiting staff and the attention to detail on each plate of food was amazing. The set lunch was really good value for money and we wouldn't hesitate to return and to recommend. We visited The Hammer and Pincer for the Saturday lunch 6 course grazing menu. On arrival at the restaurant, we were greeted by a very friendly man, who took us to our table. He was very professional, but in a warm way, which put us instantly at ease. This was the same for every other staff member we interacted with! There was a good choice of wine and other drinks available. When the food came, we were impressed with the attention to detail on presentation and flavour. Each course was unique and of good quality. Of course, it is fine dining so if you’re looking for monster portions, you’re in the wrong place! Particular favourites were the mushroom canapé and the Thai inspired seafood dish. There was a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Fine dining but without the ‘hoity toity’ which was absolutely perfect for us. Thank you for a brilliant afternoon. We will definitely be back!

Went with my wife and family for her 50th birthday. Great food, attentive service and an amazing sommelier. Not cheap but goodies d value for money. Would definitely recommend.

Fantastic, absolutely fantastic. I'd booked the vegan grazing menu for a Saturday night out with my husband and it was perfect! On the Thursday beforehand, the menu was emailed to me confirming dietary requirements and put in place the start of an excellent experience. We were welcomed as we walked through the door and asked if we wanted to go directly to our table or to relax in the bar area first; we chose the bar. We had a drink there and admired the artwork, our three canapés arrived individually and we devoured each one. The first, a mushroom tart of sorts is the best thing I've eaten in a long time, the textures and flavours were absolutely incredible. After canapés and a cocktail we were shown to our table when course after course delighted us. The food was incredible yes but the service was also outstanding. Each course was brought to us and introduced by the chef responsible and the menu was in a little envelope on the table so we could refer if we wanted. The evening lasted about three hours for us and it was so lovely to just sit in each other's company, enjoy fantastic experience and not feel rushed in any way. We were the only people for that table for the evening. Highlights: Food. Service. Atmosphere. That first canapé. The perfect sized coffee at the end of the evening.

Absolutely amazing! We’ve lived in the area for some time but never visited, but decided to go for a birthday lunch. From the moment we walked in, the friendly service and welcome was 10/10! We ate here to celebrate a birthday and had a wonderful experience with divine food. The festive grazing menu was absolutely delicious with the scallops being a standout dish. The setting feels intimate with friendly, professional and attentive service. Everything we ate and drank set the taste buds alive. A perfect evening. Highly recommended if you like fine dining, well-thought out menus, nothing too pompous but with an air of sophistication and class.

We celebrated my son’s wedding here and I am so grateful for the fantastic service. The food was amazing, the service friendly and attentive, the attention to detail exceptional. Danny and his team, especially Chef Dan, put together a dairy free menu to accommodate a guest’s allergy and even translated the menu to Portuguese for the bride’s family which made them feel so welcome. I can’t recommend this exceptional restaurant enough.

There was a choice of three starters & three mains, None of the three fish options in original form was suitable for a mollusc allergy which was surely poor planning and left a very restricted choice! But, other than this disappointing start, the food, wines, service & ambience were all excellent and we would visit again but would check beforehand that there was going to be a better range of options for the mollusc allergy as it’s nice to feel like you’re getting some sort of choice.

Great food no ambience. Booked the 7 dish taster menu. We really enjoyed the food. Having not been out in a while due to illness this was a treat. Only disappointment as sweet tooth’s was that the desert. One was a nut based desert but tasted too savoury and bitter. The other a nut free option has cocunut in and whilst not the same allergy just having a dish with the word nut in was a put off. Plus a weak replacement of rice pudding. A desert we avoid because usually bland. The beef Wellington and canapés were the courses that surprised us the most. The fish courses were divine very tasty. Venue very cosy. Almost too cosy. You’re sat not far away from other guests. And without interacting this made your own conversation quite stiff. The venue really lacked ambience. Felt like we were in an exam room about to be tested on the food. Lighting wasn’t great either. Bright light in your face and flashing lights. The venue really needs to test sitting at each table to understand the setting. The owner and chefs were great when they brought courses to the table as this created a bit of fun. With tables so close together I think they should offer a quiet or interacting choice of seating. Make more of an event option so that you could discuss food between tables. Otherwise because there was no ambience you’re sitting whispering at each other because the setting is too stiff.

The most important thing to say is that this is a Michelin starred restaurant which doesn't have a star!! We had the set lunch menu for £45. The quality of every item was exceptional, both in terms of imagination, balance and quality of ingredients. In addition to the menu courses, we were also served a mushroom/artichoke tarte as an amuse bouche and a cucumber sorbet palate cleanser. These were both quite substantial. The original menu is great value, but in effect there were 2 extra courses.. The staff were very efficient, informative, professional and friendly. I can't recommend this highly enough.

The food at this welcoming smart-casual pub is prepared with care and skill. It is interesting and tasty, with lots of lovely little extras, such as the amuse-bouche and palate-cleanser, which are included in the price of the set meal. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and efficient, and appear only too pleased to help with queries. The whole experience feels like a special treat. Easy to reach by car from Leicester and the surrounding area, it is definitely somewhere to which we will return.

Opted for the 7 course taster menu with the flight of wines and also stayed overnight in the Forest Room. The service was great from the time we arrived, with a complimentary drink to welcome us, to the time we left after breakfast the next day. The taster menu lived up to the previous excellent reviews given on this site and the wine pairings complemented each of the courses. The room was comfortable and had everything needed for a night away and the breakfast was outstanding and sent us off home determined to come back at some point in the future. Highly recommended.

Top quality fine dining. We had the £65 fixed 3 course menu. This is a little more than we usually pay but it was actually good value as there were lots of extras, amuses bouches, beautiful bread, palate cleanser and complimentary chocolates. The presentation was out of this world.

I have reviewed The Hammer before but feel compelled to write again. It just seems to get better and better. This is fine dining in the most friendly atmosphere with wonderful staff. And it’s great value for money.

I was treated to a great night. The taster menu was a wonderful experience. The food was the best I have ever eaten in the modern fine dining genre. Service was absolutely superb.

We've been to the Hammer and Pincers several times over the nearly twenty years its owners have run it. Today, our wedding anniversary lunch, the restaurant proved to be outstanding even compared to our previous visits. Frankly, the value is extraordinary taking account of the whole experience of superb food, fine decor, comfy ambience and, of course, superlative service. My starter of duck parfait was one of the tastiest dishes I have ever eaten and I have been lucky enough to visit some of the world's exceptional restaurants. My wife enjoyed every course equally but said that her starter of wild red prawns and the cod main stood out as exceptional. Well done to all who worked so hard to make this occasion such a delight. The staff were very attentive, the food was of a very good standard. Commentary when receiving our food was a nice touch. Setting was beautiful. The chocolates at the end of the meal were also a nice touch. Will be back !

Had the 6 course taster menu with wine pairing. Some really delicious wines and the sommelier was really informative and passionate about each of the pairings. That being said, a number of the courses felt very safe. Canape of tomato and basil for example, palate cleanser of beetroot sorbet was nice but packed the biggest punch, so not quite ticking the palette cleanser box. That being said, the tuna and fresh bread were delicious! Setting was great, customer service was brilliant but slightly underwhelmed by the food.

Wow! What a fantastic meal, three adults and one teenager. We all loved every course of the set dinner menu. The additional extras - the canapés and palate cleansers were also fantastic. The food was creative and delicious and it was a very special touch to have the chef himself explain the tastes and textures in each dish. The service was impeccable. As my son said 'we've had some amazing meals this holiday but this was by far the best'.

We visited this place a couple of weeks ago, it was fantastic! From the moment you step through the door to the moment we left the service was outstanding! We had the Saturday set menu, I’m fussy with food myself but loved it all!! The chief came out for each dishes giving us details about what they’ve made and we choose the wine flight too, which again was outstanding! Each wine was described beautifully and complemented the food perfectly too - you know it’s a great wine flight when the food/wine complements each other!! The cocktails were fantastic too, our friend also asked for a mocktail which the he was very accommodating in making too (again tasted fantastic!) I would highly recommend this place to anyone and Will be visiting again soon!

We came her for a 40th birthday lunch. From the moment we arrived the whole experience was excellent. The food was stunning. We had the 3 course menu but it is so much more than that with an amuse bouche, sublime bread and butter and a wonderful palate cleanser too. This restaurant deserves all the accolades and if, like me, you have been here before a few years ago, go again now as it is even better. There is an excellent wine list too and a grazing menu. For this quality of food and service it is really good value for money. They also have a couple of rooms too now if you want to fully enjoy the wine pairings of an evening! We will def go again and if you’re in the area try it too, you won’t regret it!

Last visited years ago when it was a pub . Booked on line well in advance for a birthday dinner and as it wasn’t clear , then checked that you didn’t need to specifically book the Grazing menu, which you don’t , can choose on the evening between that and the three course set dinner menu . The 8 course grazing menu ( plus canapés and pallet cleanser) was very good but involved quite a lot of food ! I must admit I struggled to eat much of the cheese course. The restaurant is quite small and being an ex pub cosy as opposed to more formal, which is better from my point of view. Well worth a visit.
