Now under new management what a disaster, inflated prices for less produce, the sandwich fillings are almost invisible not what they used to be, the cakes are dry and need a good portion of custard to soften them, the tall man in there is so rude and insists on passing on absolute rubbish about his suppliers whilst your trying to eat, he’s also not very professional moaning about other customers. Thank inflated prices for cheap food Will not be returning and wasting anymore of my money

We have just recently become local to this cafe, now called Pete’s Place, and have ordered takeaways on several occasions. Not once have we been disappointed. Great quality, pricing and welcome. The staff and chef are super friendly and very accommodating. Good selection of sandwiches, breakfasts etc, and delicious cakes, even vegan ones available. The home-made energy balls are by far my favourite healthy snack. Thoroughly recommend this cafe! Looking forward to it opening up properly!

Haven’t been since new ownership took over Pete’s Place, open for takeaway during lockdown, we hoped to support local business by heading down for coffee. Unfortunately almost £14 for two coffees and a sandwich wasn’t worth it. The coffees were okay although the oat milk wasn’t the best. Pro’s included the chicken, bacon and avocado sandwich being made fresh and my partner said it was enjoyable, although at £7 it’s very steep considering it was regular brown bread and nothing served with it. The two waitresses were lovely, however no greeting from who I presume to be the owner. The only interaction was when he advised that he would have to charge £2.90 instead of the advertised £1.50 for a slice of traybake as someone cut the slices too big! Caved and paid an additional £1.50 after already spending £14, opened the box and it had been cut to a tiny square! All seemed a little disorganised, a shame as it could do really well. Hopefully Pete will make an effort in future to engage with local customers. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.

Living locally we were a tad disappointed with the new ‘Petes Place’ the food is great!! Breakfast delicious. But unfort they seem very stressed all rushing around, have been in many times an never been greeted with hello or asked if I need a table as there all so busy or seem just busy even though theres only about 5 tables being used. Young girls are very polite but rushed off there feet an so is the guy! He hasn’t greeted us ever when walking in an we wonder if he is the owner?! It was just an unorganised mess which we are so gutted about as we really like the food but every visit there’s either no cutlery given no sugar... no drinks orders taken for ages long service. This place will be better once they get the hang of things as I’m assuming because it’s under new management they didn’t realise how busy this little cafe would be. Atm it has put us off visiting as it doesn’t come across very accommodating and makes you feel stressed when we leave. I only wrote this review at the hope of them making some Much needed improvements.

We have been in here twice before and received a warm welcome and enjoyed delicious sandwiches and cakes. We went back today - what a difference ... not the usual warm welcome and reluctance to take a dessert order. We were told that despite closing at 3pm - they were clearing up to close just gone 2pm. We left and went to other cafe to continue our lunch. Very disappointed - won’t be inclined to return.

It’s hard to review this place. The food is good, but it’s now my third visit and so far they have got my order wrong twice. Today I ordered a panini, but they had run out of the bread... which is fair enough when they offered to do a toastie. Unfortunately I ordered a white bread panini and ended up with wholemeal bread. I also ordered a sausage sandwich with tomato sauce and got a sandwich with brown sauce. It is only little things they get wrong, but now I don’t have breakfast as I don’t like brown sauce.

Our second visit yesterday this time for breakfast. We thoroughly enjoyed the Weekender - excellent quality sausages and bacon - which was cooked while we waited, nicely presented and lovely and hot. We also got toast, mushrooms, scrambled egg and baked beans. Lovely coffee and although it was busy, we didn't feel rushed. There are other breakfast options for people with smaller appetites too. on toast.

We discovered Hall+Co yesterday when we were early for something. We were given a very friendly welcome and ordered coffees. While we waited we looked at the cakes which were all very tempting - including a vegan Victoria sponge which wouldn't be normally be my first choice. We settled on bacon sandwiches: very tasty and worth having. I was then given a small taste of the sponge and I had to agree it was lovely. Next time we're heading for Ramsden Heath we'll try and be early again so we can go back!

I’ve just been in for lunch and ordered an omelette which came with a side salad, I was disgusted to find a long hair intertwined in the salad. I did complain and was not charged for the omelette. The serving staff all had long hair which was not tied back. When I got back to the office I was informed by a colleague that he had also found a hair in his meal the week before. I did tell the Manager that it is a requirement for serving staff to have their hair tied back in a ponytail, she didn’t seem to concerned. I shall not be returning. I agree with other comments left by customers that she has a bad attitude to complaints.

As previous reviews have stated, we also have been visiting this cafe since it opened in the village. Sadly the change in ownership since September last year has led to a sad decline in the customer service which used to be exceptional. On the last few visits the waitress at the weekend has been unhelpful and borderline rude. On a visit this morning the cafe was fully seated at the front. As we went to check for availability at the back, the said waitress turned away from the customers she was serving and told us they had just taken a booking to reserve the entire back room, so they did not have any availability. She then returned back to the customers she was serving without apology or an offer to seat us at the next available table at the front. Whilst we appreciate this was a busy time, we would have been happy to wait, however as she had turned her back on us, we thought the door was the best option and took our custom elsewhere.

This place started off well enough a couple of years ago by serving decent sandwiches, good coffee and nice cakes in cozy surroundings. It quickly became a favourite of locals and passing cyclists. However, the service has become sluggish and the tiny, poorly equipped kitchen struggles to cope with the orders. You could wait up to an hour at busy times so hardly a place for a quick or convenient bite. Even if you telephone to order a takeout half an hour in advance, chances are you’ll still be waiting when you arrive. Recently my wife did just that and found that they had given her order to someone else and because she couldn’t wait for them to remake the sandwiches, she had to take the other person’s order, which proved inferior. No offer of any discount. A victim of its own success and suffering from sitting on its own laurels in my opinion.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Hall and Co do good coffee. Maybe I've ordered the wrong coffee but three times now I've been and ordered a black Americano and been given an insipid tasteless (a bit like weak filter) watery coffee. No crema in sight which is the mark of excellent coffee. No body or flavour. Maybe people in Billericay like weak tasteless coffee?? I don't get it. I can't decide if it's the beans they use or the machine they use or if barista needs training. Anyway, I wouldn't have coffee there again. It's a huge shame because I really really want to love this place. They've done everything else really well. The food is great, the home made cakes look and taste delicious, and it's great to produce original cakes not the standard fare. The staff are friendly and welcoming and the decor and seats are comfortable. It should be great.... But I love great coffee and this just puts me off. The coffee isn't even good.

I love this place and I think it will become a firm favourite with me. It is unique in that it seems to attract bike riders, hikers, villagers and businessmen alike. They use coffee that is roasted in small batches nearby in Writtle. This is a treat for any 'real' coffee lover. The range of soft drinks is vast - something for everyone. The Menu ranges from sandwiches and pannini's to salads and all day breakfasts. The fish finger sandwich was amazing as was the scrambled egg on toast my partner had.A lot of thought seems to have gone into the decor which creates an interesting and quirky feel. Fully reccommend this coffee shop and hope to try the sweet potato brownies when I next return.

We then had to chase up the toast to go with the breakfast. The staff apologised and offered us a complimentary cup of tea each. Another 10 minutes wait for the tea then we had to chase up the milk. Popped out for lunch from Billericay. My first visit and my wife's second visit.I had a tuna sandwich on granary bread served with tortillas and homemade coleslaw. All extra fillings including onions, olives and salad were included in the price. My wife had a tuna melt Panini (again served with tortillas and homemade coleslaw). Together with an americano coffee and a pot of tea this came to £13.50 which we though was good value for what we had.Small car park at the rear for 4 or 5 cars and easy parking on the road otherwise. There is a small outside seating area, but that can wait for warmer weather than end-February.Staff very friendly and accommodating (e.g. I had tea before the sandwich, but my wife had coffee after her Panini).Café sold bread to local residents. Small selection of cakes, but what there was looked good - especially a large Belgium Bun for £1.50.Monday lunch time was quiet, but on busier days small parties may have to share large wooden tables. We may be tempted by a cooked breakfast next time.Clearly local groups use the back room for regular meetings (e.g. book groups or local ladies for morning coffee).

Coffee was deceptively overpriced, too hot & very weak; to the point where I could barely taste it. At £2.50 for a cup of coffee, (they only list the price of a lungo size), I wished I'd held on for a McDonalds, at least their coffee has some flavour. I can't comment on their food, but if they can't get a coffee right it doesn't bode well. This isn't somewhere I would visit again, especially as Billericay is 3 minutes down the road.

There has been much work done to create this hotel from what was a fairly run down pub about nine years ago I believe. Beautifully decorated both inside and outside and with new fixtures everywhere. Great to find sash windows that work freely, doesn’t happen often when they are not newish like those fitted in the Harvard Inn now. Quality furnishings and clean everywhere. Very comfortable. Good on site parking. Minor niggles: hate foam pillows and a little more selection on the continental breakfast bar would be nice. Sugar lumps don’t go well with cornflakes!. And some butter on the table with a selection of toast would be good. Also some more soft seating for hotel guests.
