Better than average but not ‘very good’. Ate there twice. Presentation very good. What you actually get left me deflated. Sunday lunch good but let down by the pork. A lot of fat. Next day had trio of fish special. Again looked good but fish was tiny and not the freshest . Not convinced there were 3 types. Other two in the group liked what they had hence 4 out of 5. Service good

Love coming here..the food is always top notch 👌 Although today I wasn't too happy.. As we were coming from Plymouth, we were a little late to our booking due to traffic but called up en route to let them know we were running behind, out of courtesy. Didn't expect to be guilt tripped by the manager about it on arrival, and then felt rushed to order. Traffic can't be helped but customer service can. Left a sour taste..

Known locally as 'The Halfway', the stream at the rear of the premises once marked the border between Devon & Cornwall and now denotes the central point at which the twin villages of Kingsand and Cawsand meet, hence the name. We are a dog friendly pub. We are a dog friendly pub with a beer garden and a Cask Marque Award for serving great quality real ale. We also offer Bed & Breakfast accommodation all year round.

Arrived here for lunch, walked in and said hello to the barman who ignored me and walked away. It was fairly busy, but seemed grubby, chaotic and disorganised. I was eventually acknowledged and told we could have a table, that we'd spotted ourselves. I went and helped myself to the paper menus and realised they were not exactly the same as what we'd seen on line. Nothing was marked as gluten free. When I asked the barman for a gluten free menu he went to ask in the kitchen and was told they were on the menu! He then managed to find one that had asterisks marked in pen by some dishes. By this point we were not feeling very confident, but this was the third place we had tried! My husband had the pork belly, son had fish & chips and I had a crab sandwich as the salad I wanted wasn't on the menu. The food was fine, although the chips were obviously frozen. My hubby hasn't been ill, so far so good! On the whole the food was ok, but the unfriendly welcome and lack of organisation were off putting.

Turned up without a booking for a quick bite and a pint prior to a concert at the awesome Cawsand Guitar festival. The lovely young waitresss immediately spotted us and got us seated despite most tables being reserved. So friendly, charming and relaxed and gave no hint of being rushed off her feet, , that's class. She selected 2 plates of tapas for us and they were absolutely delicious,, huge prawns, delicious pork, absolutely faultless. Other staff, from the server to the Manager offering a doggy bag as we left were totally charming, super efficient and awesome. Thanks guys, you're something special 🙏👏

Eaten here a couple of times during our week in Kingsand, although the food was nice enough, we felt the problem was the attitude of the staff, miserable and remarkably rude, the chef in particular, he left the kitchen to go to the gents, we were waiting close by for a member of our party before leaving and our dog, who was on a lead, barked at the chef, he turned around and said can we get out if he's going to bark at people and said what a horrible dog! I'm sorry but if you don't like dogs then don't have your pub as dog friendly! We won't be going back.

Sunday Lunch is one of the best I've had. Everything hot, fresh veg, tender meat and large yorkshire. The veg option (quorn chicken?) was great too and made a nice change from the usual nut roast etc. The veg was really tasty and really well cooked. The plates were overflowing so no problem with portion sizes either. From arriving there with three (small) dogs and a dog pram nothing was a problem. Lots of places are dog friendly but this felt like they really wanted you to be there and to enjoy your food. The person that served us was really polite and friendly. A great place for Sunday lunch at a more than fair price for the quantity and quality. Must try the weekday menu soon. Absolutely RECOMMENDED.

Spent 3 nights in Bed and Breakfast at The Halfway House. Also had evening meals there as well. What can I say. Fantastic place with brilliant staff. We went on a mid week break with our two dogs, Duke, an English Pointer and Winnie, a mini Daschund. The dogs could not have been made more welcome. Fussed over, treats from the bar, sausage for breakfast. They loved it. The room was quirky and uneven which you would expect from a quite old building but it was clean and tidy and, to be honest, you are in such a spectacular location so why would you want to be in your room. The evening meals were superb, great menu, freshly cooked using local produce (the Haddock just melted in your mouth). A nice variety of beers as well which were very tasty. All this and the location, in my opinion, makes The Halfway House a great place to stay. All of the above though would not be possible without the wonderful staff. We will be back.

I'm not sure what has happened to this place. It used to serve good, gastro-pub level food. Recently (Sept'23), though, when I visited, I found they had changed their menu to basic pub meals (think scampi, steak, chips, etc). The quality of the food seems to have nose-dived, even on these comparatively basic meals Perhaps a change of chef?! Anyway, very disappointing, especially if you're after something better than a basic bar meal.

Waiting staff were very busy but we did not have to wait long for our order to be taken or indeed for the food to be served. So close to the beach in such a quaint village. Had a ploughman's lunch to share really nice. In the evening we had booked and I advise as it was rammed. As we both wanted steak and ale pie we were worried they may sell out, pre ordered and it arrived promptly. Best pie I've had. Breakfast was equally as delicious, hot and lots of it. Loved staying here and already looking to stay again. Beautiful area. Car park adjacent to the pub, payable but good value. I was lucky to spend a week in Kingsand with my grown up family to celebrate a significant birthday! A couple of doors away was The Halfway House - a bustling pub which we had a sneaky drink in a couple of times and loved the atmosphere.....and the fire! However, a meal was definitely not so pleasant. We were stuck in a brightly lit room at the back next to the toilets, the smokers door to the garden and the kitchen. My seat was in the corner next to a pile of boxes, spare chairs and other general "rubbish" - we had been led through the warm and welcoming bar to get here which just seemed to rub my nose in it! The food was OK, typical pub grub, The staff were busy but cheerful - we did get 2 wrong drinks though! However, I was so disappointed with the experience that I cannot give more than "average". How can a beautiful characterful village pub get the evening meal experience so wrong - yes, before you ask, there were people eating in the bar and had we known we would have specified a table there! I hope our experience was unusual and as I am unlikely to holiday again there - too far my home! - I hope others have a better experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed the delicious haddock, medium chips, and gluten-free cod and chips. The skinless fish was beautifully cooked in a bubbly batter, and the generous portions of chips were perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The staff were lovely, and the premises were clean. Our only disappointment, whilst we requested large fish, it transpired that only small or standard sizes are available. The fish, however, was rather small considering that it cost £9 alone (£12.50 with chips) so not great value & disappointing after a couple of days of looking forward to it. Aside from that, we recommend this establishment.

Absolutely fantastic food from chef Dan! I'm vegan so we called ahead to make sure I'd have something to eat since there's nothing vegan on the menu and we were told the chef would come up with options, but I wasn't prepared for how much care would go into those options. He came to the table to talk to me about how he could convert things on the menu and came up with several options for me to cater to my specific likes (well really to avoid my dislike of mushrooms). The food was absolutely incredible, and my meat and fish eating companions thoroughly enjoyed theirs too. Best birthday dinner I've ever had I think! The other staff were also very friendly and helpful, without being overbearing. We appreciated all their help 💗

We had a really good, relaxed meal here. It’s on other top floor of what, presumably was an old sail loft in the heart of the artists quarter. So you get a great view of sea, sand and light. We all had different items from the menu, although we all shared a couple of portions of focaccia and balsamic vinegar, which was plenty. They served it with honey butter, so just to be on the safe side we asked for some normal butter as well. As it turned out, honey butter is very nice. One of the party actually rang the chef beforehand about a dietary need, and had a risotto specially prepared for them, which was delicious. The lamb ragu was served with pasta and was also top notch. The pan fried hake and beef cheek were also really nice dishes. We finished off with a trio of ice cream, which two of us shred and a really good cheese board. The service was friendly and professional - just right, in fact. We thought it was pretty good value by today’s standards as well. All in all, strongly recommended and I’m sure we’ll go back again.

A lovely evening organised by the British Legion, sadly let down by the awful food and service. An hours wait to get our main meal, which was just about warm but burnt, and a further 35 minutes to get our desert. The service was slow, the food was burnt and inedible. All this for £25 a head. No thanks. Not going next year.
