This is the restaurant for Llawnroc hotel. We read some reviews and thought it had closed but it is definitely open and worth a visit. One of the best meals I’ve had for ages. Scallops and Hale followed by a shared Eton mess and cheese and biscuits! Staff were lovely and food 5 stars. Lovely sea views and just a short walk from the beach.

We chose the Llawnroc Hotel for our silver wedding anniversary dinner, which turned into a kind of family reunion, hence was 30 people. Alan, the manager, couldn't have been more accommodating - giving us the whole dining room and some of the patio outside, tailoring the menu to suit our (very varied) needs, and giving us a wonderful, stylish, night to remember. Really good food, friendly and helpful service, with the backdrop of the Llawnroc patio and view - it was just wonderful!

Part of this review is covered under the review of the hotel but I can recommend the Bistro - onion bhaji/scotch egg was a hit, as was the mackerel in miso and the lamb harissa; cod and chips and the duck were also lovely. Good wine list

Service was terrible, a young lad with zero hospitality skills was the unfortunate sole that served us. 3 failed attempts at pulling 2 pints of coke, not understanding that the syrup had ran out, we eventually just had j20s. The meals arrived. The child's portion or sausage and mash with seasonal vegetables that I received was tasty enough to say it was a spoon full of mash 2 breakfast sausages with 3 long stem broccoli florets and a spoon full of garden peas. I was left still hungry. My partner had the burger £14 for a burger I was expecting good things. We were yet again disappointed. Extremely bland, no flavor in the burger nor the fries, the onion rings served with it tasted obviously of the fish that the batter and fryer had been used for previously. We asked for mayo and are still waiting for it now. No check back but we wasn't surprised at this. We then sat with our plates for a further 20min until we decided to get up and ask if we could pay. The accommodation is lovely and the. Building itself is beautiful. Hope the bedrooms are better than the restaurant. Would not recommend.

Wide ranging menu with good choices of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. Chilli venison ragout was delicious. Hot nibbles to choose from whilst you select your choices. Fine wine list arranged according to what sort of taste you prefer - we enjoyed a warm spicy fruity red from Portugal. Young, attentive staff providing good service in a spotless modern setting looking seawards. Very good value, especially as part of dinner B&B in Llawnroc Hotel.

Very nice modern restaurant. The lunch it self was great - we had pork belly and the lamb, and both were delicious The only reason for not giving a rating of 5 is the waitress, she was sullen, and clearly did not want to be there. We were staying just around the corner and went to the Llawnroc for a special meal one night last week. Despite some poor reviews here, we thought we'd give it a go. I guess maybe the reviews don't take into account the new chef? Because WOW we had an excellent meal! The fish dish I had, with crab new potatoes, leeks and a bacon and hazelnut dressing was probably the best meal I've had in ages. Very interesting and very tasty starters and desserts as well. The main courses of Parma ham wrapped pork fillet and Pan fried cod fillet on crushed potatoes were variable. We went here to have a meal for my boyfriends birthday. It was a meal for two. We were asked where we wanted to sit and so we asked to see the menus for the different places (restaurant, bistro and bar) to which we were told it was the one menu. Upon sitting and looking at the menu the food selection was poor, there was no beef and only a selection of 4 deserts. Once ordered we weren't waiting long for food but the portions were extremely small, far from what you'd expect even from a top fine dining establishment. For the crazy price that you are paying for the meals you would expect just a little more. The same could be said for the drinks! We ordered two long island ice teas that were barely even half a pint! The meal was expensive, small and the atmosphere was completely dead. With only 1 other person in the restaurant. Upon asking for the bill we were told we would have to go to the bar as they could not take card payments in the restaurant. Overall a bad experience and will not be dining here again!

We read the other folk's reviews and we were a bit wary... But Grandma offered to watch the kids while we had a moment to ourselves. We had a nice cocktail delivered by a very nice young local man. We shared the soup of the day and the mackerel starter. Then we also shared the mussels and the fish stew main. All of it was delicious. The only issue (minor!) was we needed to ask for crusty bread for the mussels. Five mussels hadn't opened up properly, but of the forty or so, that didn't seem out of place. Yes, we didn't have the kids driving us to distraction as usual... but I wouldn't steer people clear here. It was a nice date night.

We ate with friends and their 2 young children in the Hotel Restaurant Gorran's rather than Gwinea's bar which is a seperate bar and restaurant in the Llawnroc hotel. The location is beautiful and the Hotel looks lovely and a tempting place to stay on a return trip but based on our experience I might stay but would consider eating elsewhere in the evening. Trouble is there is no where else nearby to eat.Our food quality was ok on the whole . Some dishes I'd say were quite good , others average ( eg my friend's Mussels had lots of blind unopened shells which the kitchen hadn't removed or simply hadn't seen or considered ) The service is what lets this place down. The staff were mostly young (student age) who were pleasant but very inexperienced. There were 2 very young children with us yet we had to ask for the kids menu , it wasnt offered. Apart from being slow there was nothing intuitive about the service , eg having to emphasise that the kids should be served first and asap and we we had to keep asking for things rather than any of it be anticipated. The requested child's cheeseburger was served without cheese and with a green leaf garnish inside , when we sent it back for cheese it returned with shavings of Parmesan on top ! ( not your average Kid's cheese of choice !) So there are greenhorns in the kitchen here , not just amongst the waitresses.I ordered vanilla and salted caramel ice cream , I received banana ice cream ,possibly with a caramel scope in it but the banana flavour was overwhelming. I had lost the will to comment by then ,the Ice cream wasn't unpleasant, just not what I ordered.I'm sure a beautiful sunny day here would help the experience.

This review will sound like what many, many other people have described here.... VERY POOR.We, 4 adults and two children (two vegan - pre arranged) booked and went for New Years Day 2015 lunch for 12.30pm. We arrived and went to the bar, where the barman was making coffee. We exclaimed "ah coffee". He replied with "Well... we are a hotel". This may have been his 'sarcasm', but we felt that it would have been more professional or appropriate if the reply had just been "would you like one ?".We sat and had coffee whilst waiting to be shown to our table. The barman came out and explained that there was only a short menu, with a ridiculous excuse that they had to save food for the evening guests. We asked where the vegan menu was, and was given a blank look. We explained that we had asked if they catered for vegans and was told it was no problem. The barman went off and came back saying that the chef only could do a vegetable dish with pasta. But, pasta is made with EGG (vegans don't eat egg) which any 'chef' should be aware of.He went back again and said that he could do vegetables with potato on top. We eventually had to settle this, as it seemed it was our only option. One of the other adults asked if she could have a burger (which was actually on the children's menu). The barman replied that they could possibly do that, but that they only had 8 burgers left for the guests that evening, and so made her feel quite guilty about ordering this. Both the tables and the chairs were wonky and have definitely seen better days. It was cold in the dinning room, apparently because the heating wasn't going to be put on until the evening !! The highchair provided for one of the children (10 months old) had no strap to keep her in safely. This was exchanged, but instead of being taken away (health and safety) it was brought back out for someone else with a toddler. When the food arrived it came on very hot plates, but the (vegan) food was cold, which was then sent back. Then, and entirely different meal came out, made with frozen chopped and diced vegetable, and what looked like tinned potatoes, and low and behold, that was cold too. So that was sent back. We complained that it this was just not on, and we had our meals taken off the bill, but were left hungry, and weren't even offered anything else, not even a complementary drink, NOTHING. The Hotel itself had an enormous amount of money spent on the place only a few years back, but unfortunately the appearance hasn't been kept up, and its looking a quite drab. God knows who the manager is, but as most people know, a manager is worth their weight in gold. You would have thought that the Llawnroc owners would know this..... All in all, a disappointing experience for the start of 2015.

Just got home from a family meal today & I can only imagine the management don't read the comments here or on Trip Advisor. I echo what others have already said - the food here is amazing, but the service is a massive let down. It isn't rude or anything malicious, just very absent. We were admittedly 15 minutes late for our booking, but we phoned ahead & this was all ok.Upon arrival we had to wait in the bar area. When we were taken to our seats, the restaurant wasn't overly busy so a bit inexplicable for our wait. We ordered drinks & they duly arrived on time. Whilst waiting for our starters, a waitress came to our table to ask for payment as they had made a mistake on the till. This is fine, but the way she said it didn't make us feel completely comfortable about it.This was reinforced as our starters took 45 minutes to arrive - given that 3 starters require no additional prep & the other 2 (calamari) only require a brief stint in the fryer, this was unacceptable & when we asked the waitress there was no apology. Our mains took a further 45 minutes to arrive & they arrived one by one. We had to ask for the veg & the waiter's reply wasn't "i'm sorry, let me please check", it was a "yeah, they're cooking it now". It's not hard to get that right! A lady did bring one of the plates out & said 'sorry for the wait', but no offer of an explanation. We ate our mains in quiet as they did taste so good, but we then ordered deserts as the food had been so delicious. I asked if there were any brownies left & was assured there was, but this was the same waiter who got the veg wrong. 20 minutes later another waiter came over & did apologise but said they had none left but could offer an alternative. This took another 10 minutes to arrive & was amazing but the service really let it down. The decor looks great & the food really is amazing but throughout our meal, I think the owners were sat at a large table for their family, as some of the waitresses sat with them - another off putting touch given we were sat waiting for so long, didn't want to explain why it took 2.5 hours for a three course meal with only one drink (no offers of table water or bread were made). I would go back just for the tastes, but not for the service & if the chefs have anything about them will move on & leave this place a disappointing waste of a great building & location.

This hotel restaurant is in a village which to non-locals could be deemed a little inaccessible (we took a local taxi). And this fact might explain why it is difficult to get experienced service staff. Our waitress was very charming, and young and very inexperienced. When we asked her what the amuse bouche was, she simply repeated it was an amuse bouche without understanding that we wanted to know what it actually was. We were also a little disappointed to feel rushed between first and second courses, with out being allowed to savour. But rant over...the food was divine. We met the chef - he too is young, but he can cook! The dishes we had were imaginative (without being try-too-hard), well balanced, perfectly cooked. And reasonably priced.

I recently visited the hotel with my wife and family and ate in the bistro. The food was of a very good standard and we all got what we ordered hot and fresh. Overall our eating experience was very good. However as many of the other comments bring up the bistro has absolutely no atmosphere. I feels like a plain room with a few tables and chair chucked in. This combined with the one poor waitress who had to oversee the whole restaurant on a fairly busy night in August left us feeling sorry for the poor girl. It seems the Llawnroc has the potential to be a very nice hotel however number of staff (2) in front of house is just not acceptable when you are expected to pay £19.95 for a steak. This along with the fact when we went to get a drink from the bar to finish up and pay one of the chefs (a tall scottish fellow) was clearly very drunk and made us feel sightly uncomfortable sitting at the bar.Overall might visit again when staff issues are sorted out.

Oh dear. I am a local person who has travelled around the world, staying in some of the best hotels you can find (and some of the worst). I am sad to say the Llawnroc is close to some of the worst.I went with a group of friends and thankfully they are all lovely so I had a nice time but it was in spite of everything else. The food was passable but not amazing. The service was appallingly bad, for instance when I had to go to the bar to ask for more drinks the waiter took my order and asked me if I thought anyone else wanted a drink. I said, why don't you walk the table and ask them? As each dish came out they stood at the head of the table and shouted out to find out who had what, there were just 10 of us.The denouement came when we had to pay the bill.I can't even be bothered to list the outrageousness that followed but here are a few tidbits:- my colleagues observed the staff having jaeger bombs while on duty behind the bar- they were unable to split the bill- when I asked to see the manager they told me he was "cheffing" and then "cleaning down", they went off to get him and then told me he had gone home, I asked who was duty manager and was told there is no duty manager, I asked where the manager lived and was told "past Heston" and when I asked what happens if there is a fire I was told there is a night porter who knows what to do...Believe me, I will never go back there and will certainly never stay there.Llawnroc what is going on? This was a Friday night in July for goodness sake!! The place was almost empty and the staff were completely untrained and either half asleep or half drunk!!This is a hotel that is going down fast unless someone can save it. No ambience, awful service, mediocre food.

We were in the area trying (unsuccessfully) to find a vineyard, so ended up her just about 11:45. We said to the receptionist that we were a bit early but were they open for lunch? She said yes and directed us the bistro and said that we could sit on the terrace if we wished (it was a sunny morning). We expected to have to wait for a few minutes due to the time, but almost immediately the waitress appeared with menus and took a drinks order. We ordered and sat watching the chef set up the barbeque for the meat. Just as the food arrived it began to rain, so the waitress carried the food indoors and set us up there. She apologised for it being a bit 'topsey turvey' (we hadn't noticed) as they were setting up for a wedding the following day. The food was tasty - I had the pork and hubby had the trout. The side orders were too big for one though - if we had known we would have shared. It is a shame to waste good food but I could not finish my potato salad or coleslaw. I thought the service was good, the food tasty and the setting peaceful. We plan to back next year.

A meal for 8 people that was just okay considering the price of the food. This newly refurbished hotel disappointed us a great deal since we planned to eat at this restaurant a few times during our holiday. Once was enough. My Dad's steak was "tough as old boots", my starter arrived after everyone else has finished theirs. My children did not get their meals for well over an hour after sitting down at the table.......The waiting staff were very apologetic and I felt a little sorry for them since they were the ones dealing with the dissatisfied customers (it was not just us on the night we visited) when it is the management / kitchen staff who need to significantly improve their ability to provide good food and service. This hotel is in a prime position to serve not only the holiday makers but the local community and it could become a real community hub.........I fear however that this is not going to happen unless staff numbers and training are improved and a general sense of the management wanting to please their customers occurs.

We tried the Friday fish night 3 courses for £20 and that was good value for good food. It loses a mark for dirty cutlery and table mats but these were replaced without comment. Full menu looks reasonable but try Friday if you are around then

Me and wife absolutely loved the food here. We were stuffed by the end of it. Although the service was slow on that day but the food and portions were great.

We ate here on the Saturday night of our stay in Gorran Haven. We were looking forward to a nice meal as we'd been eating takeaways or at cafes/pubs during the rest of our stay. I ordered the chicken and it was lovely while my wife ordered the duck which she also enjoyed. No complaints on that front. However, the service was poor particularly considering the price you're expected to pay. For example, we ordered a bottle of white wine to accompany the meal and it was brought out unopened and not very chilled and plonked on the table for us to serve ourselves. I think with some attention to detail this could be a really nice place to eat. You could work on the ambience a bit too.

We dined in this bistro on a Sunday evening. I found the dining area rather bland and characterless (but I guess that's just down to personal taste). The staff were polite enough and we were shown to our table and served promptly. The starters were pretty good, but I was not so impressed with the rest of the meal. One of the key ingredients (samphire) in my main course was missing from the dish when it arrived. I queried this with our waiter and, in fairness, he quickly resolved it and I got a portion of said vegetable on the side. For dessert I had ordered ice-cream. One of my choices was peanut butter flavour. When it came, it was obvious there was no peanut butter ice-cream and that pistachio had been substituted; the 'handmade wafer' was also missing. As there were no staff in sight at that point and the ice-cream was melting, we just ate it. It's a shame because the food and service were reasonably good, although certainly not outstanding, but the issues mentioned above reveal a real lack of care and attention to detail. We were staying in the hotel so it was convenient for us, but I wouldn't make a special trip to eat here again (particularly as there are several restaurants and pubs serving excellent food in nearby Mevagissey). Unfortunately Gwineas Bistro did not provide the special experience we had anticipated.

Stopped here for lunch after it being recommended by another attraction. Had a fish finger and steak sandwich. Both were tasty. Sat outside and enjoyed a drink and the view. Great job folks.

We are walking the coastal path which passes through Gorran Haven. On Tuesday 23 April we arrived in Gorran Haven at 1:15. We thought that we would stop for lunch and not seeing anywhere suitable saw a sign on a fish and chip restaurant for a local hotel. We walked up a steep hill, after 8 miles from Portloe we were in serious need of some good food and a delicious drink. We presented ourselves at this hotel which advertised on both huge notice boards that they served lunch.. The surely young waitress said she would ask if the man/woman in the kitchen could put themselves out to make us a sandwich. The answer was no, the chef!! Was busy prepping!! This ill informed young woman then pointed us in the direction of the local pub, just up the road. A local lady we met outside informed us the pub was a good 30 minutes walk away and that the local hotel had been good until it had been turned into its present incarnation as a haven for yuppies. I rarely write a derogatory review on this site but I am extremely angry by the way we were treated today. To inform us that the website states they are not serving lunches at the moment when the signage clearly states they are is wrong. To compound this by having all the visible signs saying, we welcome non residents is also wrong. I have a suspicion it is because we were dressed for walking. Just because we did not arrive in a BMW does not mean we are lesser people. I am extremely angry at the way we have been treated and when I get home will be following this up. Do not visit this hotel which descriminates against people who on the surface do not fit their client base.

The hotel itself is very nicely presented with modern decor, the seating in the bar is very comfortable. A previous reviewer has complained about service, couldnt disagree more actually! The restaurant wasnt busy but the service was lovely, friendly and helpful. Another couple was served their meal in the bar at their request and the staff busied themselves to set up the desired table with good manners and you could tell this wasnt a hassle for them. The food was very good. I arrived hungry, ordered starters and mains, enjoyed both very much but had no room for dessert. Shame. All in all a good experience and will visit again

I dined at the Llawnroc hotel earlier this year with a couple of friends. I was extremely disappointed with the experience; what had meant to be a catch up with a couple of friends who I had not seen in many months was spoiled but the most unprofessional/poorly trained staff and even worse service. Never before had I felt so misled by a restaurant; sure it has a fancy facade but appearances can be deceptive... and in this case it most certainly was. Upon arriving at the venue, there was no-one to greet us, so we navigated to the bar and bistro, where there were plenty of staff milling around the two table of customers, however our presence was ignored. This was a common theme, having been shown to our table we then had to wait a good 45 minutes to have our orders taken and then similar length waits occurred for food delivery and collection of plates. The food itself was at best average; the website really overcooks the extravagance of this place; I've had better service and food in a fast-food McDonalds! Extremely disillusioned by the whole experience, we asked to speak to the Manager. The Front of House Manager (Jessica) had gone home, but the Bar manager spoke to us and said she would be back in the morning. We refused to pay the bill and offered to leave contact details and to call in the morning to discuss, to which the Bar Manager threatened to call the Police (in front of other hotel guests!). This was rather humiliating, but we explained we would be prepared to wait for the Police and to explain that it was a civil matter. The Bar manager didn't call the Police, instead attempted to negotiate for us to leave our ID (driving licenses) with the hotel as a form of collateral to return in the morning. The Bar Manager was not prepared to allow us to leave and also not prepared to call the Police, despite his threats - he told us he would give us a 10% discount... so we could leave the hotel, we paid the bill and said we would contact the Front of House Manager in the morning. The following morning, I called and spoke to Jessica, the Front of House Manager. She was most unsympathetic, rude and didn't really want to listen to my complaint, never mind actually addressing the issue or making any form of apology. I have since learnt that her skillset is multi-faceted and she offers wedding planning too - I would suggest she works on her manners first before expanding her role! I took my complaint one stage further and contacted the owner of the hotel, he was of a similar ilk to Jessica (rude and unprofessional), and went to the length of analysing the CCTV footage to calculate exactly the time we had spent waiting. Much like a child throwing its toys from a pram, his letter concluded that he was not prepared to discuss the matter further. Duly I shall take my cause to a public medium (Trip Advisor) therefore to ensure that no-one else need be inconvenienced by the Llanwroc Hotel. You only get one chance to make a first impression; the Llawnroc certainly did... it made an incredibly poor impression, so poor in fact, I would say it is the worst and thoroughly most unpleasant dining experience I have ever had! Having lived in the local area for most of my life, my advice to any prospective customers would be to find a different venue - there is no shortage of choice!

We used to love popping in here when we were in Truro, you would be lucky to get a seat but now it’s take your pick. In a nutshell the place has lost its soul.

Festive Afternoon Tea this afternoon was very disappointing. It is clearly a stop gap to keep income trickling in between Sunday lunch and evening dinner service. The biggest issue is with the service, very inattentive, unconcerned staff not in the slightest bit interested in providing a professional level of attention. The afternoon tea was acceptable but not exactly delightful let alone memorable or to be recommend to others. Delightful setting with the hotel beautifully appointed and well decorated for Christmas, just a pity the staff were not switched on at all. Management at fault and it would appear no investment made in staff training.

For a spot of lunch, my wife and two children decided to eat here. Never again. We settled on the beef style kebabs (on a skewer). With rice. The beef was tough, tastless, rough and badly cooked. I was a butcher, I should know! Rice was microwaved but still undercooked! The salad that came with it was soggy, rotten and floppy. The best part of the meal was the kids fish goujons. We spent 70 quid (including drinks) on some of the worst food I've eaten.
