Breakfast club, once a month around mid Cornwall, so this wasn't our first rodeo. Pleasant server at the till, even offered an extra teabag as we wanted string tea! (Most places have a meltdown and try to convince you their tea is strong) We opted for the full cornish as a proud cornish man. I believe hogs pudding is a must! Nope, not here. We had some very, very burnt potatoes and overdone eggs. The rest was of ok standard, but the toast was the ends nearest the crust and were dry. On a good note, the plates were scorching hot, which isn't very common these days. The young servers did well and were very busy. It's a shame they didn't have any pizazz or smile. Nobody checked on our progress or asked if we needed anything. Sorry a struggling 4.5/10

I saw a very old review on TripAdvisor that said Griggs was not dog friendly. I phoned to check, and spoke to Josh. He was very helpful and told me they have three tables at the front near the lift that they keep for People with dogs. He asked when we would be there and then reserved a table for us as we were going to be there within the hour. There are also dog drinking bowls in the area.

We went for a last minute Sunday roast and we were not disappointed. A lovely well cooked roast - everything on the plate was delicious. I thought the portion was a tad small but actually when I'd finished it was a comfortable full and it was definitely enough - especially considering it's the cheapest roast in the area. Only negative is that the service was slow. But it's Sunday and we were not in a rush - just hungry.

So I order a soup and a latte. A long time passes. The soup arrives delivered with the usual enthusiasm of waiting staff in this part of the world, slammed down on the dirty table. I ask if she can please wipe it. You would not have thought I had asked her to do something entirely in her job description. She comes back wipes it. I see my coffee on the counter of the counter going cold. I think you know what I will just get it myself. I grow weary of hospitality in the U.K. (is it like this all over the country?). I like eating out. Well I used to. Now it is perfunctory like life generally in Brexit Britain. Why are young people so miserable, slow and generally not ‘on it’?

We've used the restaurant for many years and often visited during our visit to the attached store where we have spent considerable money over the years. On our last visit we took our young children, two of which are less than 18 months. We ordered 3 meals for myself, my wife and older child but provided lunch for the babies that we bought from home. The meals we purchased were bought to our table quickly, were very nice and enjoyed buy the three of us. Unfortunetly, the babies had dropped some of the floor (dry food) so before we left I started to pick it up and put it in bag to dispose of in the nearest bin, as I was doing this, I was approached by a waitress (I assume supervisor) who told us that we are not allowed to bring our own food and that the next time we come we must order food for all guests from the menu. It was quite embarrising, as she left other dinners expressed their surpise and visabily taken aback as to what was said. The meals with drinks came close to £40. In addition to the meal, we had also spent money in the store and was planning to go back in to get some shoes for my wife, however after this attitude we decided to leave and take our business elsewhere and haven't returned since. It's a shame, it wasn't unpolite or unprofessional but I don't think it's required. It's a nice establishment that operates on the side of a retail premisies which many families will visit who would do the same as us. Many of which may be in for a shock!

We were visiting the shop and it was approaching lunchtime so we decided to pop in for lunch. We got to the table at about 11:45am. We went to order at aprox. 11:57 to be told we couldn’t order until 12. We were the first in the queue and to order. We ordered a children’s meal and a coffee. The coffee came promptly however by 12:25 we still had not received the food and lots of other tables were being served. I asked a waitress how long roughly it would be (as I was on my own with a baby and 3 year old) and she went off and didn’t ever come back to update me. By this point I am seeing food being served to people who weren’t even in the restaurant when we ordered!! 12:35 the order finally arrived, the waitress was unfriendly and offered no apology. Elements of the meal were below standard but we’d waiting so long already we didn’t bother mentioning it. We usually enjoy eating at Griggs but this just felt below par ! I just felt grateful on this occasion my children were being well behaved !

We found the breakfast to be disappointing. No options for those of us who don’t eat dairy or eggs. Firstly, I have to say we really enjoy going to Griggs, it's close by and have never had a disappointing meal, we thought we would try their Sunday roast, again delicious but I was able to watch the kitchen staff dish up the food, my issue was they used their hands to place the parsnips, potatoes and Yorkshire puddings on the customers plates, no gloves worn or tongs used. I also noticed a member of staff eating food themselves using their bare hands then dishing up food. I spoke to a member of staff who went over and spoke to them. I am really sad to have written this review.

We have eaten at Griggs a few times this year but today was very disappointing. We cleared our table as waited long enough for staff to. Our tea and coffee took ages to come and my tea was so weak even with a good pot stirring. My breakfast was awful. Poached eggs not drained enough and muffins were wet! The plate was so wet I cleaned it with napkins. I sent the bacon back as raw, but waitress never returned with another rasher! My partner politely complained after giving up waiting and the staff were very nice but all a bit of a pointless rest from cooking our own weekend breakfast.

I don’t usually put bad reviews but felt really disappointed after visiting for a Sunday roast. The meals had missing items to what were advertised (Yorkshire pudding, swede, cauliflower and broccoli cheese), we weren’t told at the point of purchase that this was the case or when they brought the food out, i’m guessing they’d hoped we just wouldn’t notice. We asked about the missing items when the food came and they said they ran out of those items and walked off. We would have picked something else if we were informed at any point. There was also kitchen twine still in the meat of one of our dishes. The veg plate took that long to come out we had ate most of the meat and potatoes already. We needed a refund of a drink as one too many cokes came out. We did let the staff know about the poor service at the time.

Sadly Griggs haven’t mastered how to serve food hot, starting with the basics of ensuring the plates are hot before plating up. This is a real shame as the quality of meat and vegetables are excellent. If I can offer some suggestions, first make sure the plates are hot, serve one table or order at a time and not have between 8 & 10 meals being “assembled” at a time, multiple orders. Repeatedly observed several plates of food waiting to be completed and served. We were only asked if we enjoyed the meal when I paid, despite providing some positive and constructive feedback I didn’t feel it would be taken on board.

My husband, two children and myself have just enjoyed an amazing meal at Griggs. My daughter and son had the fish and chips and said it was the best they'd ever had, considering their Uncle is a local fishermen this is high praise. My husband had the steak and it was cooked to perfection, moist and tender and he couldn't speak more highly of the flavour. Again, high praise as he's ordered similar dishes in other restaurants in and around St Austell and Truro and none have come up to this standard. We went to Griggs for the first time recently,we visit Cornwall regularly as my parents live near Truro. It's great that there is a lift as my 80 year old mother wouldn't have been able to get up the stairs. In keeping with the agricultural nature of the country store the restaurant is a large barn which gives the impression of a canteen, unfortunately. There is a nice terrace outside but the picnic style tables were a challenge for the elderly who couldn't swing their legs over the seats. The food, however, doesn't disappoint, the menu is imaginative and varied but does include some traditional favourites. It's nice to have the choice of small portions as the servings are generous. As the restaurant is away from the main tourist areas the prices are more reasonable than some places we've eaten in Cornwall, will definitely visit again.

I have been to Griggs on many occasions with lots of different friends and family. Sometimes all is ok but there is no consistency in the level of service or quality of food. There never seems to be anyone actually overseeing the restaurant. I noticed as soon as we got to our table that all the flowers on the tables were dead! They had not just died, it was obvious that they had not been changed for a few days. It is obvious that nobody cares about maintaining standards in the restaurant.I mentioned this to the waitress who promptly took the two vases away,[ the table next to us had put their vase on our table to get rid of it!}. Our drinks came and our tea for two people came in a small teapot with no extra hot water. There was enough for one and a half cups each which I feel was not enough considering how much a tea bag actually costs. Our meals came out and my meal which was hake with new potatoes and broccoli was cold. I sent this back straight away and noticed that the table next to us had also had to return their meals as they were cold. It was returned warmed up a few minutes later with an apology. Puddings were ordered and took some time to come even though they were quite simple. It seems that corners are being cut, there are never enough staff to cope and generally there is a lack of leadership and customer care. You charge top prices but don't seem to want to spend any money to provide good customer service. You are assuming that customers will just keep coming without you having to make any effort.

Table of three for Sunday Lunch, two Beef and one Turkey. The Turkey was exceptional, the Beef was poor, the Yorkshires dry and obviously previously cooked and left on all three plates, the 'roast' potatoes had to be dragged apart by the cutlery as they were clearly deep fried to get the colour and then popped in the oven - parsnips were uncuttable too. The veg was sparse and we noticed a table of four receiving twice the amount that we did so poor portion control. We ordered our drinks at the same time as our meals but received them half way through the meal after two prompts. It was okay I guess but certainly wouldn't return. £10.95 per head... do better Griggs, you have the venue to make a killing!!

We decided to return to Griggs despite reading some recent negative reviews and we're very glad we did. Griggs have a new system in place where you pay upfront for your food at the counter, rather than pay after you've eaten. I chose the roast beef and my wife picked the roast pork. Both meals come served with roast potatoes, roast parsnips and plenty of gravy on the plate. A separate dish contained cauliflower cheese, creamed swede, sliced carrots and cabbage. The pork came with spiced red cabbage and crunchy crackling but didn't come with a Yorkshire pudding (we wouldn't expect one to come with pork), but my wife wanted one and it was provided without charge. Upon request, homemade horseradish and apple sauces arrived in little pots. It's a large open plan layout with wooden floors so it's noisy when busy. Our food arrived within 15-20 minutes, which does feel an age if you're hungry, but that's not how you feel when you leave, the portions are sized for rugby playing farmers! The desserts looked equally generous and delicious but with no room left, these will have to wait for another visit to be sampled. One each of large beef, small pork and a large diet coke for around £23 represents good value for money.

Went for Sunday lunch with the family, arrived at the desk, no acknowledgment from any member of staff who were next to the desk. 7 mins later a girl asked if we had booked which we had. No table was ready, so put in the meeting room which just had dirty tables and the windowsills were filthy. We waited 20 mins for our drinks and 45 for our food. The roasts were not great, chewy meat, hard potatoes and tasteless Yorkshire puddings. My Mum also had to wait 5 mins extra for her quiche to arrive. I know it was busy but keeping the customer informed is key. Things have gone down hill.

So when it first opened years ago you could pretty much guarantee that you would be eating some quality stuff. However it’s seems that the quest for making a profit has overtaken the dinners experience... Arrived today to find it swelteringly hot! In a ‘posh’ barn that has two massive glass gables ends you kind of expect a little air con.....especially considering how much most of the products cost next door. It was explained that there was roast ham on the specials, which sounded nice. When it came to ordering we were told by another waitress that I could only have it once the Beef had run out let me think, I believe I would of drowned in my own sweat before then(don’t offer if you can’t deliver). Service was ok until the ever caring staff obviously saw were were struggling and cleared away all our freshly filled glasses in the hope we would go out for air and not come back in the hope they could fill our table with some more acclimatised patrons. We had been warned that standards had slipped, but were willing to make up our own mind...... disappointed to say the least.

Ordered two breakfasts, only one arrived. Waitress said it was the fault of the Kitchen and that it was their fault. Bizarre attitude and no apology. Will not eat there again

Visited Griggs again and the Sunday roast was as good as ever. The staff are friendly and helpful and the service is good. The vital element, the food, helped make this another great visit. Thank you Griggs Team.

Visited Griggs today and ordered a chicken and bacon sandwich and a minute steak sandwich. After 45 minutes of waiting we realised tables that had come in after us were receiving their food. Not at all pleased! Will not be visiting again and highly advise people not to visit at peak times because clearly the staff just can’t handle busy rushes without getting confused. 50 minutes for a sandwich.

Just had breakfast here. I had a veggie which was as big as my evening meal if not bigger! My compatriots had the full Cornish which only just fitted on the plate! This is a must visit. Very clean, well run and staffed with a great menu.

We visit Griggs for breakfast every so often ( live locally) and always enjoy our visits. It’s a bright airy space to eat with plenty of table options (we like grabbing the sofas by the windows...) Really tasty vegi breakfasts with halloumi and mushrooms, as well as lots of meaty options. American pancakes are tasty too! Lovely relaxed atmosphere and very friendly service!

Stopped off here before shopping for sandals, only wanted coffee but cakes looked rather special, ordered cheesy chips on recommendation of my friend. Wow, huge hand cut potatoes cooked superbly smothered in tasty cheddar cheese. All extremely hot and wonderful. Fingers used!! Coffee was good too. Interesting menu and plates served around us were piled high and looked very nicely cooked. Staff friendly and efficient. Glad we are local and will return.

Just had lunch today. I’ve had the car very a couple of times which has been delicious. Went on a Wednesday and had their beer battered cod, gourmet chips and tartare sauce. £11.95 for a huge plateful (there is a smaller, cheaper option available). Absolutely...

We had a very good Sunday Roast here last weekend on the basis of a very positive local recommendation, which proved to be spot on. Griggs does not set out to be conventional fine dining: the restaurant is in an industrial style of building, which has something of the feel of a canteen to it. But, the emphasis on good quality food, with cheerful service, and on value for money is welcome. Our Sunday Roast would have been hard to beat anywhere: it was well prepared and the helpings were generous to a fault. The menu is limited, but effective, offering a vegetarian main option, as well as a limited range of starters and desserts. Strongly recommended for a no nonsense lunch. But do think seriously about booking, especially at weekends, for, deservedly, Griggs is a popular destination!

My wife and I have eaten breakfast at Griggs for several years and usually the service isn't that bad but today after ordering, they seem to have forgotten us. They were quite busy but i've certainly seen it fuller. We ordered just before 11am and after waiting for 30 minutes, I went to the counter to ask where our order was. I was informed that our food was half done and would be with us shortly. After seeing several people who arrived after us being served, my wife went and complained and after waiting another 10 minutes, we decided to leave. What really annoyed us was the fact no one really apologised, we were kept being told they were busy. If someone had told us they had made a mistake or forgotten our order, then we probably would have waited, but to be told several times how busy they were and to see other people who arrived much later eating their breakfast, it was unacceptable. There are plenty of other places that serve a good english breakfast and we shall in future, visit one of them instead, where the service will, i'm sure, be better, certainly faster.

Great restaurant - friendly staff and great food at a sensible price! My only quibble would be that whilst the three baked cheesecakes that were available on the day we visited looked amazing, not one of them was vegetarian friendly! I realise that Griggs is a farming community venue, but with the great veggie choices available of the main menu, I was surprised that the deserts didn't offer a similarly wonderful option. Even the chocolate torte contained gelatine! So come on you great chefs at Griggs - could we veggies please enjoy your sweet treats too?

Beautiful building. Amanda the barmaid/waitress was very helpful and friendly. My family had the ham egg and chips, which was outstanding. I had fish and chips, the fish was delicious and fresh. The puddings were sinful and beautifully made.

We stopped for an ice cream while on the search for our car keys which we lost on the beach!! 🤦🏽♀️ The rum and raisin ice cream was AMAZING and no complaints from the kids and hubby with their choices! The lovely gent who served us got his wife Zara to help us with locating the keys which luckily where found and left at the RLNI across but was closed, she managed to find someone who got the keys So thank you so much for your help lovely people and for the ice creams! 🥰 wishing you all the best x
