Another perfect visit this morning to the Lazy Shack on Hythe beach. A really quirky place that has been converted into an amazing restaurant. Lola and her sister Ruby are excellent hosts, both friendly, hard working and approachable. They deserve success because the food served is cooked perfectly and served steaming hot. A great place to visit for a ‘fishy’ meal or a huge breakfast, they also have a great cake selection.

Don’t believe the negative reviews go and experience the fish for yourself. I really wasn’t expecting much - fish by the seaside… However, we went there on a hot day last month (Saturday) and we were extremely surprised - it was wonderful food and very good value. Greeted by a helpful smiling young lady, who explained the gluten free options available. We sat outside on clean bench tables and it wasn’t a long wait until our lobster and crab and chips arrived in a box. Brilliant idea. There was a carefully made salad too accompanying the meal which was delicious. They’d taken the time and trouble to de seed the tomatoes and the cucumber - nice touch. I had wanted samphire but I was told the chef was very apologetic but he’d run out. My lobster was so delicious- I hadn’t had it for many years and the GF chips (which I stole off my husband) were absolutely delicious- very crisp and golden on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I had ordered trying to be good, tasty new potatoes instead. My husband’s crab was very good too. The menu is perfect and incredibly they have gluten free bread and rolls. They have a shop too where we bought some large prawns and scallops to take home. There’s a fantastic array of fish there along with meat and other produce. Sam was fabulous explaining everything and said his sister was the one who served us - she was lovely too. They sell their own kiln smoked salmon amongst other fish from the wonderful smoker. This family run business is well worth going to regularly if you want to eat extremely fresh fish by the azure sea with crunchy pebbles underfoot or to buy top produce from their shop. It was a lovely way to spend our leisurely time. Most of the negative reviews are for meals without fish. The fish is excellent. In my mind that’s what you go there for. They’re open every day too. We will definitely be back, in fact we are going today.

Very dissapointing …. Went here today for fish and chips, asked for large fish and chips, was 14.50 and had the smallest bit of fish with the thickest skin ever and the smallest portion of hard chips !! I even went back with it and asked had they given me the wrong order as was so small but insisted that is what they give! It was smaller than a kids portion! Go to the fish and chip shop at Folkestone Harbour or At Sandgate by the Ship Inn…. Brilliant at both of those and a lot cheaper and get a lot more. Was dissapointing as had been before and was lovely then… not sure if new owners or not and they cutting back?

Lazy shack.. As we had a stroll on the beach I fancied some fresh, local seafood...though as the lazy shack is right on the beach, nxt to fishing boats, it will be good place for that...oh how wrong ..we ordered calamari and prawns... The calamari were (obviously frozen not fresh) so rubbery and hard that I couldn't eat them, went to bin....prawns looked like taken of aldi frozen section...for £13, not what I was expecting... So neither fresh or tasty...worse seafood lunch I had as far as I can remember...

This is a fun and colourful venue, an ideal place to meet friends for a natter. But... sadly the food is so basic and poorly cooked, we just end up having coffee and cake. A missed opportunity. With access to the freshest fish there is no excuse for the lackluster offerings. They desperately need a new chef to raise their game as its really not good enough.

I will just clear the table for you. small problem ,there was someone just leaving but the family were getting there baby dressed to get in the pram. So a bit difficult for us to sit at the table. Plenty of tables vacant at this point but we had to sit at a table which wasn't cleared and a family were still getting ready to leave. So here we are standing waiting for the family to leave. Unable to get past because no room Very embarrassing I understand you have to make a living but Christmas spirit , not here today and can we take your payment before your lunch comes. Suddenly this place has really gone downhill. The cod was tough and chewy with no flavour. Chips were indifferent. The restaurant area was packed with an excessive number of tables crammed in. For us to move at least three other people had their meal disturbed. Are there no fire regulations in Hythe?? Very disappointing we will not return. There are far too many good eating places in Hythe.

Have eaten at the Lazy Shack /Griggs several times and it is really good. Brilliant location on the beach with fishing boats that caught your fish a stones throw away! If the weather is not so good then sit inside amongst the quirky decor. Originally a fishmoners they decided to cook the fish they sell so all their seafood is fresh and excellent ranging from their fish and chips to scallops etc. They also do excellent filled baguettes with steak, sausages, smoked salmon or a vegetarian choice and at around £6 each they are economical and very tasty and with a generous portion of chips bliss! So a very friendly staff, reasonable prices and a view to die for what's not to like?Highly recommended.

In Hythe not knowing where to eat, googled “fish restaurants “ and found this place on the coast about half a mile from the high street. It is a small “shack” which was pretty full as it was appalling weather and not possible to sit outside where there are lots of tables. The staff were lovely, helpful and charming. I ordered grilled Halibut with chips and salad, and can honestly say it was amongst the most beautifully cooked piece of fish I’ve ever had; absolutely delicious. I’m on holiday in this area but if and when I return, I will definitely head back .

I took my sister and 96 year old father for his birthday lunch to the Lazy Shack for the first time. My sister’s burger was large but very dry - not a bit of salad on the plate to add some moisture. She just managed to eat half of it. Dads fish and chips was ok but there was a very thick skin on the fish which would have been nicer had it been removed before cooking. I treated myself to the ‘Specials Board’ Dover Sole for £20. When it arrived I noticed it was beige all through and all over. It was dried up, leathery to cut and rubbery to eat. The side under the bone was just as bad. It must have been kept warm for hours. Because it was my fathers birthday I didn’t want to complain but it was very upsetting and disappointing not least because of the price. It should have been creamy white, moist and buttery. I spoke to our waitress after but she told me through a big smile that a lady earlier said her Dover sole was the best she’d ever had and I should have complained about it. It’s hard when your trying to have a happy family meal if we’re all complaining so we didn’t. All Very sad.

We thought what a lovely venue, nicely done with good Covid health and safety standards and good outdoor seating area. Nice place to stop mid walk for a bite to eat and something to drink.Ordered 2 coffees and 2 sausages and onion banquettes.Coffees were luke warm and we waited for 40 mins for our for to arrive. When we asked the waitress to chase our order, she told us that the food had been waiting inside for 20mins and we had missed our number being called. However she served us our now cold food, with no attempt or offer to reheat and assumed that the fault was entirely us.We had not heard the number being called even though we had been listening out and the waitress made it clear the they had called us once then just left the food on the side. Shame, not a great way to experience and a it felt like a waste £16 on a cold brunch.

This place was recommended by a lady in Chilham, where we were staying, as some of the best seafood to be had in Kent. She wasn't wrong. Smoked mackerel baguette and bacon and scallop baguettes were consumed with gusto by my wife and I. Sat outside on a lovely day in Hythe and trade was brisk. A permanent queue, food constantly served; a regular goldmine. We visited the shop at the back and bought some dressed crab which was delicious. Had been recommended to me so thought I’d try for a Monday lunch. Ordered of smoked salmon and prawn baguette and was surprised to be told it was half price, due to Covid 19! (every cloud etc)The filling was outstanding however unable to eat it due to the disgusting baguette. It was only half cooked and no doubt just come out of the freezer. But how could you forget to cook it. It was soft and tasteless, what a shame these places don’t buy decent bread. We’d all happily pay a little extra for a completely good experience.I told my friend of my disappointment and he said “ oh yes, the rolls are awful”Great mate!

I've been a loyal customer for many years, travelling down to buy locally caught fish and seafood and, more recently, enjoy meals on the beach with family and friends.Last Saturday I ordered a scallop and smoked bacon roll. It was just about ok. The bacon was tasty; the scallop nonedescript, lacking in flavour and mushy in texture. The oysters were fine but very expensive. The much-anticipated dressed crab? What a rip-off! It was unlike any crab I have eaten before (and I have caught, cooked and dressed many over the years). It was poor quality, stuffed with a dubious, rather gritty, dark meat mixture which was camouflaged by a thin web of overworked separate white meat fibres - not a chunk or even a flake of white meat to be seen. It was bland, tasteless and had an unpleasant texture. Whether or not it had been previously frozen I do not know.I understand Griggs no longer has its own boats, has changed hands and now orders all its produce from elsewhere. Whoever that supplier is, I am not impressed.I was so disappointed by the crab, in particular, that I did a little detective work and struck gold! Just along the coast, opposite the Pilot at Dungeness, I bought a beautiful freshly cooked dressed crab. It was half filled with soft, delicate, creamy dark meat and piled high with chunks of moist bright white crab meat that conjured up all the tastes and smells of the sea. It was delicious, top quality, simply prepared, 'honest' food which I thoroughly enjoyed and I will be returning again and again. Everything else on display smelled and looked tempting. The oysters were almost half the price of their cousins in Hythe!I do hope Griggs take on board the unfavourable comments they have been receiving recently.

It was so disappointing. The service was slow even though there was only 2 customers and 2 staff. The server obviously did not want to be there and this showed. The fish selection was great but the quality lacked the freshness it had years ago. Lots of flies around sitting on the fish (it was a warm day). Everything was overpriced which you half expect from a shop offering fish, meat and a green grocers but it was not worth the money or the visit. Very disappointing and sad from what it once was.

We wanted to order a cooked takeaway fish & chips which would have taken about a minute. We said we were next and then a customer who was also waiting accused us of pushing in! We left without ordering anything! Might be sensible for one to gut and another member of staff to take quick orders of cooked food!Very disappointed. Not the same since it has changed hands!

Delicious breakfast menu, friendly staff, fabulous location looking out to sea. We had a kipper roll and a bacon and scallop roll, both delicious and highly recommended at a very good price.

I used to work as delivery boy (27 years ago!!!) at Griggs, when it was still owned by the Griggs Family. It's changed hands a few times over the years, but the fish remains top quality. I'd like to think that this review is unbiased!

Seeing the reviews on Tripadvisor we thought a visit for lunch on the beach would be a good ldea.

Not only is the fish selection worth visiting but time it for a late breakfast or an early lunch and treat yourself to a scallop and bacon roll. Eat outside on the beach if the weather is fine or at an inside picnic table if not.

Having grown up locally and watched Griggs grow into the most popular brunch venue for miles I was so disappointed with our visit today. Like many others we have always loved to drop in here (with or without our own wine) and wile away time on the beach with fab food. What has happened??? There were always, even in winter, a variety of specials presumably depending on what was available, including Kedgeree, garlic prawns, seafood ploughman’s.... Today there was no board outside, it was really uninviting and the food lacklustre. Many of the familiar cheery faces have gone and although we did shop here it really saddens me to say that we will probably go elsewhere in the future. If this has changed hands then the new owners really need to up their game. Very disappointing.

Chris and I called in for brunch with friends Pat and Ted before setting off for the day. The display of fresh fish is magnificent and Ted bought some sea bass fillets and samphire which he cooked for us in the evening and we all thoroughly enjoyed. But before this we sat on a bench and had the most FAB-U-LOUS scallop and bacon roll. Big juicy scallops cooked to perfection with thick bacon in a mini baguette munched while being warmed by a HOT October sun and gazing out to sea. How wonderful is that? So good that the next morning we walked up before breakfast from The Hythe House where Chris and I were staying to buy more fish to take back home to Winchester, because as Rick Stein pointed out in one of his programmes, Winchester is the only town/city in the UK which doesn’t have a wet fish shop. If Griggs were here we’d be visiting a great deal!

If the weather is good can’t think of a better way to enjoy a bacon and scallop roll. Large juicy scallops and crisp bacon served overlooking the fishing boats on Hythe Bay.

Lovely place to have lunch - but always CLOSED. How can a place like this be closed on a sunday when there are so many people looking for a place to have lunch on the beach.

We stock up the freezer from here most months with really fresh fish of all varieties. Not quite the selection available in Portugal, but for an English wet fish supplier they sometimes have unusual types of fish available. Their lobsters are really good, as are their crabs and squid. A bit off the beaten track but well worth the journey to Fishermans Beach, were you can also enjoy their very fresh 'fish'n'chips' as you sit on the beach and gaze out to sea!

Used to love this place...but it seems to have gone downhill. Our last two visits have been very disappointing. Their menu has changed from having interesting fish dishes to bacon and sausage rolls. I chose plaice goujons, they were overcooked and the fish still had the skin on which was slimey and some had more skin in than fish! The lettuce garnish was off, some of the leaves brown and slimey, yuk! We won't be returning.

We have been going here on and off since they started this on the beach cafe. Due to the attractive typical English beach location,it’s very popular and it’s often difficult to get a spare bench. On hot sunny days, like yesterday, all available sun umbrellas aren’t always out,so you might need to chase them up on this.

What's happened at Griggs? Haven't visited for months. Not able to have shucked oysters on site! Not a very fishy menu? Old timers like the bacon and scallop in a roll.... very lacking in presentation. Change of chef/ownership perhaps?? Disappointed.com

My partner and I visited here for brunch one Saturday morning. We were seriously impressed. The food was fresh, beautifully cooked and presented and the setting is perfect with wooden picnic benches and tables on the shingle right near the sea. The staff were really friendly and there was an impressive selection of fresh fish on offer. It’s great to see a well established and reputable business so well supported. They deserve all the good reviews. Well worth a visit!

Went to Hythe with friends, heard about this plaice, pardon the pun, I had fresh Kippers on a baguette, stunning, best I have for years. May other fish meals on offer, would highly recommend eating here, right on the beach. Fantastic..

After a long walk from Folkestone on a Saturday morning this was a treat.Lots of like minded people on the benches and the wall eating varied dishes. There was a queue to the door. This gave us a chance to view the fresh seafood on sale. When it was our turn we received swift service with a smile! We retired to find s bench had just been vacated , woo hoo we sat admired the beach view and we presented with our bacon and scallop rolls in good time and they were delicious.

Located at the working end of Hythe beach you can enjoy and excellent seafood lunch whilst watching the activity on the working part of the beach. The cod we had was perfectly cooked to order, with lovely crispy batter and chips all for just over £7.

Have loved this place in the past but am now moved to review it badly - sadly! The shop fish is still not to be bettered anywhere BUT the service and welcome today was grim - and the food we ate really disappointing. This is the second time we've found it so - and I am really sad to write this. After the glory days of masses of customers and lovely blackboard menus, there were just two other couples there. Could their lovely reputation have slipped horribly? Please get your act together. We will give it one more chance and I shall remove my recommendation in our holiday let till improvements happen.

Like a previous reviewer, we also have been visiting here since 2015 when the food was delicious, well priced, with several tasty choices including kedgeree, eggs royale with smoked salmon, fish soup, fish curry, paella, etc etc, bringing family on several occasions, and extolling the virtues of this place to friends, workmates and anyone else who would listen - indeed we were here most weeks....

Parking can be a slight problem but it is worth finding your way there to get good simple food to eat at tables set on the beach just in front of their shop where they sell a variety of freshly caught fish and seafood. Moderately priced but without any mod cons. Good simple fare.

We’ve enjoyed this place each season since it opened and what a pleasure it is to eat so close to the sea. But, went yesterday for the first time this year and the choice of food was appalling. If you want a small serving of cod and chips your ok , but what remains are 3 or 4 simple snacks with no sign at all of any accompanying salad or vegetables. The most adventurous item they had was a bacon and scallop roll, very plain. Presumably they’ve lost the chef or decided that the previous offerings of fish, crab, soup and prawns are not profitable enough.

42nd Anniversary lunch was excellent. Started with a very nice chilled Cava. The crab starter and beetroot infused smoke salmon were a big hit, as were the main course of lobster and Lemon Sole (perfectly cooked).. Nice vibe about the place with good service. Desserts of Pavlova and Chocolate Ganache were a good effort but shows a lack of real patisserie knowledge. Overall though a 5 out of 5, because what we went in for (the fish) was outstanding. £145 inc tea and coffee not service charge was amazing value. I would highly recommend a visit.
