We went for lunch one day and dinner another day. Both meals were enjoyable though portion sizes did manage to beat us. The staff were friendly and professional. One star taken off because on both occasions a cat wandered in the bar and dining room going under tables and then jumping on to an empty chair next to us. For us it was not acceptable - we mentioned it and were told it was the resident cat!!

Attended a function organised by a friend. The theme was English and this was kept to really well. Non stop wine for which you never had to signal for. The staff were just there. Menu was solway potted shrimp and Melba toast. Gorgeous !!! Salmon en croute with hollandaise and roasted veg. Husband had huge portion of steak pie. I could have just eaten a full plate of the veg. Everything hot and delicious. Dessert a trio including an orange bread and butter pudding and a lemon posset to die for. Well done Greenhill. Lovely afternoon. Great food. Thank you

Booked this country hotel as on our way back from Scotland. What a great choice! Beautiful Georgian hotel with only ten or twelve bedrooms so they have the personal touch. Very friendly welcome on arrival. Beautiful front bedroom with tasteful decor, modern en-suite and very clean. Great powerful shower and choice of toiletries. We had dinner in the lounge. The fillet steak and roast duck were both outstanding. The duck was perfectly crispy on the skin and succulent with a delicious sauce, easily the best duck I’ve eaten in years. Very generous portions and reasonably priced. The French Malbec was so good and good value, we had a second bottle! Desserts also delicious. A really lovely meal and relaxing evening as the service was attentive and friendly, can’t fault anything at all. Breakfast was served in the beautiful dining room. The full English and eggs Benedict with bacon and spinach were again delicious and served hot with a smile. Can’t recommend this small intimate hotel enough for couples and small groups of friends or family. We will be back!

There are very few places to eat in the area especially Monday - Thursday so when a lady at our accommodation suggested the hotel we booked ourselves in. Its best to make a reservation before you go as on one night they has no tables free. The staff were very good and the food was just as good. The portion sizes are large. I ordered the steak and ale pie with chips and vegetables as peer the menu. I could have had either one or the other and struggled to eat the entire food. Also great value for money and would recommend this venue to anyone in the area.

Visited the Greenhill for News Year Day lunch. Special menu for New Years Day with some bold and exciting choices. The hotel is lovely, in a wonderful setting and is very welcoming from the off. On arrival, ample parking, we were shown to our table and offered drinks from an extensive range. The hotel was tastefully decorated for the festive period and is very welcoming. All of the staff are very professional and additionally very attentive and really lovely, nothing is too much trouble. Our starters arrived promptly and all of our group of 6 thoroughly enjoy the starters. Mains came after a break which was just the right length. Most of our group plumped for the full Roast Beef dinner, whilst i had Lemon Sole in lobster and prawn bisque and another of our group had the pork with apple cider cream sauce which he said was really yummy. It was all served on piping hot plates and came with roasted carrots, parsnips and potatoes, boiled potatoes, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire puds for the beef. ALL the food was delicious including the vegetables which all had lots of flavour and were cooked perfectly, and there was plenty of them for all of us to have plenty to eat. My Lemon some was perfectly cooked and the sauce had depth of flavour and plenty of prawns. Everyone loved the food and empty plates went back as proof! Desserts were similarly delicious and devoured. One of our group was really full so they kindly put his in a take away container to take home. I had coffee crème brûlée which was strong with coffee and just the right balance of sweet with a home made shortbread biscuit. An excellent meal in a lovely hotel with excellent attentive and friendly staff and all faultlessly delivered. A marvellous New Years Day lunch thanks everyone.

My wife and I joined members of our local gardening society for a Christmas meal. The menu had an excellent variety which made reaching a choice quite difficult. All the main courses came with brussel sprouts, carrots, roasted parsips, roast and mashed potatoes. We both had hot smoked salmon, turkey and black cherry roulade. The meal finished with mince pie and coffee. The food was all cooked to a very high standard, in fact it was the best Christmas meal that I have had outside of a family setting. We are really looking forward to our next visit to Greenhill.

I have eaten at Greenhill on many occasions and it has been really lovely but I've not had much luck lately which is such a shame. The Sunday night 3 course menu is really nice and good value for money. The staff are really friendly and nothing is too much trouble. Also the Covid measures they have in place are excellent. I have had two dishes from the main menu though which have not been good. The first time I had the 'Crispy Duck' with a Chinese inspired sauce. The duck was anything but crispy, in fact is was soggy and the fat unrendered . There was barely any meat on it and what there was was very difficult to get off the bone. I gave up! The sauce had no flavour at all and was really disappointing. My friend had the seabass which was the smallest fillet of fish I have ever seen and sat in about half an inch of butter. She also declared it as tasteless. The potatoes that came looked like tinned potatoes and weren't great and the chips and sweet potato fries both came out really burnt and unappetizing. Even the veg looks uninspiring. The waitress was lovely and could not apologise enough, however when I mentioned it when I paid, it was not taken well! I have to say the starters and dessert were very nice. I am so sorry Greenhill but based on my last 2 experiences, it is a long time before I will be back.

This is a regular place for myself and friends and family to visit for lunch, dinner functions etc. I don’t think I have ever had a bad meal, however, I recently attended one of their party nights with my work colleagues and it was not a great meal at all. The hot food was cold and the salads were a poor assortment and had almost gone by the time we got to them, not the usual standard at all for the buffet. Also some of the waitresses, namely one giving out the potatoes was miserable and very abrupt! Disco on the other hand was fantastic! We have already decided we will not be back next year, unless some serious changes are made to the food. Such a shame as it a beautiful place and has recently been decorated.

I dined at this hotel on two consecutive nights as we were staying here, first night we both ordered platters, one ploughman's and one seafood, not only was the taste and presentation excellent but after doing a quick cost breakdown analysis of the amount of food versus the price, I fail to see how they could make a profit on either, cost £9.95 each. The second evening, I ordered a leek and potato soup as I only wanted something light, and my husband a sticky toffee pudding. The type of soup would not usually be a choice I would go for, however the soup was blended and the chef had used a generous helping of pepper making it very palatable. The pudding was much larger than portions my husband is usually served in other establishments with ice-cream and cream, however due to the fact he was able to do it justice I presume that was also very good. we also had breakfast both mornings which was also cooked to perfection, it was very good to find an establishment where the chef was present at both meals, and the meals did not taste as if they had recently been transferred from a brakes vehicle via a microwave to the table.

The steaks were good, being tender with good taste and not needing any sauces or special knifes, which seems the current trend to cover up tough meat with little flavour. I had homemade soup to start and my husband had garlic mushrooms, we both had roast beef which was beautifully cooked with plenty of vegetables also well cooked and I had homemade strawberry pavlova for dessert and my husband had sticky toffee pudding which were both delicious. The service was quick considering they had 90 guests in the function room and several in for lunch as well. Highly recommend.

My husband and I and our daughter and partner have just eaten here tonight and the food was excellent. We all had a starter and they were quite large but very nice, I then had the salmon which was beautifully cooked, my daughter had curry and my husband and daughters partner had mixed grill which was huge, we also had various vegetables and a large bowl of chips between us. We all really enjoyed everything we had and wouldn't hesitate to eat here again.

Just had Easter Sunday lunch, food excellent and well cooked. Generous portions although possibly too big for some appetites. Multiple choices to choose from. Service good, especially when staff were silver serving the meat and the veg came in separate dishes for self service. Price was good value for money.Look forward to returning to the future.

Called in for tea before a meeting in the meeting room. Lovely warm place on a January night!Attentive staff and super food, if a bit slow in arriving. We were luckily just in time for the "Happy hour" menu and had 3 superb main courses for just £7.25 each...and absolute bargain in this day and age! Can't fault the food or the place and the staff were super-efficient and friendly...Now added to our "Go to" list.

I stayed at the hotel and took dinner there. Friendly and helpful staff although having to divide duties between bar and restaurant meant service could be slow. The starter portions are huge - too much for me - but were great quality and good to eat . So too was the main but again the portion was large. The menu is strong on grills and this means food is freshly cooked.I can recommend this restaurant but go hungry!

We have just been for afternoon tea for two today & found there wasn't much sandwiches for the 2 of us but plenty of cakes, the bread on the white was a little stale as if it had been standing out for a while & he fillings not very tasty, the scones were also very dry & crumbly cake selection was very good. I complained about the bread & was offered to have some more made using bloomer loaf which I promptly refused as I had already started on the cakes but the waitress then said she would see if we could get a reduction off the price which for what you get is not cheap £13.95 per person. We were basically left alone all throughout having our tea & didn't see anyone else until we went to pay at reception, my other half went to pay & came out saying there hadn't been any reduction in the price & he was a little too embarrassed to ask for one. All in all we wouldn't return here & neither would I recommend it to anyone else

My husband , myself, sister and dad ate here on Sunday evening as a treat for my dad. We were offered the set 3 course menu and also the bar meals menu. We all ordered from the set menu which had plenty of choice and was very reasonable at £18per person. We ate in the dining room which was lovely and the food was beautiful we had no complaints at all. The staff were very attentive and friendly and all courses were served quickly. I will definitely eat here again and would recommend it for good food at a good price.

Were invited for lunch by friends who go often, but very disappointed this time. Table was sticky, informed this was due to cleaning product build up - not nice start. When we did get the attention of the waitress order was taken in an unhelpful manner. Our meal arrived, but our friends waited another 10 minutes for theirs(after being told it was on the way), by which time we had almost finished ours. The waitress did apologise profusely for giving wrong order to the chef so it had had to be redone, but by that time the treat had been spoiled. Food was average. Probably from other reviews seem to do better at weddings, and maybe we just caught them on a bad day, but we wouldn't be booking a wedding or going again.

I booked the conservatory at Greenhill for my daughters 21st as she wanted a family get together and we have had lots of family parties here. I booked a buffet to eat at 7 and although a little late everyone really enjoyed the food. They had a wedding in the function room so service was a little slower than normal but they did apologise to us, however no one in our party was bothered by this. I have always found the staff to be pleasant and helpful and Malcolm the manager is no exception and always on hand to assist where he can. My daughter and all our guests had a lovely night and I would certainly return, I fact my sister is getting married here in September so we are all looking forward to that.

Stayed here, as we were attending a weeding, and decided to stay over. They food at the reception was lovely, hot and fresh. It all went according to plan. The rooms however are something else. Our room was large, with the bigggest cobweb hanging round the light, obvisouly missed!!My husband went touse the toilet in the morning and to get washed, there was no water for either. My son and daughter in law also stayed and their room was so small, he could'nt move in the bathroom, you could basically sit on the toilet, get washed and have a shower at the same time! The have the market here, and can charge what they want. We stayed at a Premier Inn in Edinburgh a couple of days before, and was far superior in every way to this hotel!!

We visited Greenhill Hotel recently with family and friends, for a wedding reception and a one night short break. The wedding dinner & evening buffet was super. Generous portions of really good quality food was served, with a strong focus on local produce . All staff were pleasant, helpful and efficient. Our bedroom was large, warm, clean & well furnished. The following morning the 'full English' breakfast was excellent, again a strong emphasis on quality local produce. This is a lovely, comfortable country house hotel, well equipped for functions and good bar meals or a short break in the lake district.

Came here for afternoon tea with a friend. We pre- booked and were extremely excited for this treat. When we arrived, we thought we could sit outside, as it is in a lovely location, looking over the fields, however they don't have any tables set up outside? We went to the bar to get a drink, staff were pleasant enough but very slow. We said we had booked and she took us to our table, where the afternoon tea was already set out... and looked like it had been for hours. The sandwiches had gone dry, and wasn't much choice. We didn't complain because there was a wedding party sitting next to us, who were getting married the following day. The scones were nice, but to be honest, we have had better. Disappointed with this because it is such a beautiful building and location and it could be fantastic. It seemed so quiet with just us and the wedding party in, and even the manager moaned how quiet they were.

Had read previous reviews that had criticised service and time for food. It was a quiet evening but the service was friendly, attentive and made you feel a welcome guest. We were advised that the food was cooked to order and as I was having a special chicken dish and no starter it would be a bit of a wait. The food was excellent, well cooked and presented and simple tasty vegetables to complement the richer main course. Neither of us was going to have a sweet but the choice was good and the desert again very good. Tables are large so no fighting for space and lovely view out over the front gardens

Once again on Monday night whilst at Greenhill in a group of 12 the food was first class we are regular diners at Greenhill and always feel very satisfied with the quality, quantity and value for money. I have also had a business lunch twice in the last fortnight and the ham sandwiches were also beautiful and very nicely served with side salad. The staff are always very pleasant.

We came here for a meal with friends and whilst the meal was fine (for a bar meal, not fine dining), the experience was spoiled by the fact that there were many drunken people in to watch the boxing.Sorry but we thought that this was a country house hotel, not some kind of sports bar. The interior is pretty dated and you have to drive or get a taxi so we won't be back.

My friend and I asked for half a slice of cheesecake young lad was going to do it perfect, when a rude blonde woman in black said ,,,Stop. We can't spoil look of cake,so silly woman cut it in half thro the middle, what happened to customer service,,she had none. Only nice person working that night with a smile was dressed in a lovely black dress with glitter around the neck. She needs promotion!! No wonder they selling,,,,

We booked in for our work Christmas meal a couple of months ago, for 12 people, on the day someone was ill so the organiser rang Greenhill to inform them that there'd now be 11 of us, and confirm that we were booked to eat at 7:30pm. We arrived at around 7:20 and had a drink in the bar and waited for ages before anyone came to take our order, and then waited again for our table to be ready.....which it still wasn't! There was only 10 seats, and no more space, so after a couple of minutes of bemusement the woman brought over another table to add on to the end, which was a bit like when you have a special "kids table" when you don't quite have enough room for everyone. It was at least 8:30 before we got starters, it could well have been closer to 9. We thought things were picking up then as they were beautiful, but then everything went downhill again with the main courses. Most people had turkey, which nobody enjoyed, one had the nut roast which she said was horrendous, someone chose not to eat from the Christmas menu and had steak & ale pie, it looked awful when it arrived, just a splodge of brown on a plate, with the tiniest bit of pastry, and it wasn't enjoyed either. Luckily I went for the pork and it was lovely.....the vegetables on the other hand were not - they were burnt to a crisp, to the point that most people couldn't eat them, the roast potatoes were also awful. The puddings were good, however one person was overlooked and had to ask a passing member of staff to remind someone to bring it! And staff, that was another thing - the service was shocking. Apart from the amount of time it took for us to get any food, not one of them (apart from the lovely lady on the bar) cracked a smile - and one woman in particular was just plain rude. We complained, and they didn't really seem concerned - the woman came back later and informed us that they would be charging us £20.95 instead of £24.95 - why not just put it to a round £20 is beyond me, although to be fair, that would still have been too much! We usually go to the Sun Inn at Red Dial, and in fact our taxi driver pulled up there on the way forgetting that we weren't going there this time - and we ended up wishing we'd let him leave us there! We definitely wont be going back to Greenhill.

We went here for afternoon tea after my graduation. It was really lovely and very well priced (£12.50 compared to the usual £19.50 of other places) but was alarmingly quiet. Admittedly, it was a Tuesday afternoon so that could have had a lot to do with it, but even though the staff were very friendly and attentive, you still felt like you had to be very quiet and almost whisper to each other or you felt like you were shouting. The selection!! There was a big selection of cakes and pastries, so plentiful we couldn't finish them! We ended up taking the leftovers back home with us afterwards and were still picking at them the day after. It was a really lovely experience for one of the best days of my life, though you do need to book ahead so they know how many they're catering for (everyone gets one of everything). It's worth it, but don't expect any of the tiny dainty cakes you can eat in one bite, these ones are real, properly sized cakes and were lovely.

Perfect stop for a coffee break - the view over the lake with bird feeders in front was great. The chairs in the lounge were very comfortable - best decaf coffee I have had. Looked at the menu and it was a shame that only a coffee stop. Did have a taste of the local beers!!

Walked from Keswick centre to Nichol End Marina. A lovely walk but was glad when I arrived at the marina cafe. Roger (jolly Roger) welcomed me in and was so helpful and friendly. It was quiet as the season is coming to an end. I had an oat milk coffee and a raisin sticky toffee scone. It was so big! Put half in a bag to take home. Plenty of choice of scones all fresh and looking delicious. Prices were so reasonable. Roger then gave me a ride in his boat across Derwent Water. He’s such a nice man. It made my day to find a gem of a place. Would def recommend if in the area. Will return and try out the boating/canoeing etc next year.

The best dog friendly cafe in the lakes. Gorgeous food and the warmest welcome. This is our go to place when walking in the north lakes. All of the food always hits the spot but the cakes are just gorgeous!
