Greendale Farm Shop Cafe in East Devon

We meet with friends and had brunch in the restaurant,, the food was really good , the coffee even better . The staff were friendly and very efficient but extra praise goes to our waiter Robert ,, he has recently joined the staff and is in training , don’t think he needs any more training , he was attentive and nothing was too much trouble ,, what an asset he is to the Greendale team .

Went to get some pumpkins with my family was greeted by a man called Phil, he was absolutely lovely and very talkative and attentive, said he was only hired 6 days ago but seemed like he was there for ages, really made my experience better having nice staff will definitely be coming again because Phil made my experience Amazing keep up the great work phil x

We recently visited Greendale at 10 AM, excited to enjoy breakfast after some shopping. Unfortunately, getting a table turned into quite a hassle. Despite several empty tables, we were informed that they were all reserved. It’s hard to believe that a café like the Farm Shop Café would require reservations! It was only after expressing our frustration to the manager that a table for two was finally found. Unfortunately, the disappointment didn’t stop there. The food quality was poor and served cold. The presentation was unappetizing, and we regretted ordering the Barn Breakfast. What we received was half a plate of cold canned beans, one egg, and a tiny sausage. Additionally, when we went to pay, the young man at the cash register couldn’t provide us with the correct change. He charged us £40.65 and only returned £0.22 from our £41. Overall, we felt it was a waste of time and money. We would not recommend this place to others looking for a pleasant breakfast/lunch experience. They must improve its reservation management, food quality, and staff training.

We visit the area very year and stay nearby so we often pop in for food. We had read poor reviews before going but had not experienced that ourselves - up to now. The re were plenty of staff and they were helpful but not overly happy and welcoming. As you would expect in a farm shop, the meat in the meals was very good but the chips let down the whole meal. They are cooked on site in their own "fish and chips shop" area and I can only imagine that they are cooking all day. We felt that we got chips from the bottom of the tray that had sat there for quite a while. When we commented upon this it was suggested that they might have had a "bad batch of potatoes" - from a farm shop?! We had planned to go back another time, as we have previously had wonderful fish from here, but we went elsewhere instead. I will visit again next year, in the hope that this was a one off, but I am not convinced!

It is a few years since we have been to Greendale mid-afternoon after poor service. Today we had very good coffee and cake but despite being sat down promptly when we arrived but then nobody came to take our order. Eventually, we had to remind them they had forgotten us. The shop is great but the cafe no, we had the same bad experience again.

Disappointing. I ordered the fish and chips and l was surprised at how long it took for the food to arrive and when it did it was not a good experience the chips were cold and hard completely inedible. The fish was ok but I have had so much better everywhere I have been. Service was poor and the only excuse was that it not the best time of year for potatoes.

I hate writing bad reviews but this was outstandingly poor. We arrived for a table booked two weeks in advance and were seated in a freezing draughty conservatory. We asked if there was a table inside but were told 'no'. We ordered drinks, the service was slow and when the hot chocolate arrived it was cold but we couldn't get anyone's attention to send it back. Food arrived eventually. I had a steak baguette with salad and chips. The chips resembled something from a bad chip shop that had been reheated numerous times, they were inedible. The salad was 4 leaves and a slice of tasteless tomato. The bread of the baguette was dry and stale. The steak was nice though. No one asked if our food was OK so when we finally gained someone's attention and pointed out the issues we had lost the will to live (metaphorically) she eventually returned and said we could have a round of complimentary drinks so we re ordered hot chocolate which, on arrival, has to be returned because it was tepid. We will definitely not be returning for a cold experience with stake food.

Haven’t wrote a review for years however my visit to Greendale today infuriated me so much over one single item which I found so unbelievable that I had to write this review. This place isn’t cheap but overall it’s an acceptable place for a bite to eat .. that was my impression up until we paid the bill. My issues wasn’t with the quality of the food or the service from the staff .. I ordered the eggs with toast which was price quite reasonably & was very good -I was asked if I’d like anything else with the eggs .. I said could I have side of Mushrooms… the plate came with the eggs & toast plus one very very small mushroom.. that’s what said ONE mushroom!!.. thought they’d made a mistake & just added the mushroom as a good will gesture or as a garnish … nope I was charged £1.25 for ONE minute mushroom .. how any restaurant thinks ONE mushroom is a side is unbelievable.. perhaps the catering manager at Greendale could explain their portion control reasoning!!!…I can only be thankful I didn’t ask for a side of beans!!! I suppose I shouldn’t be so surprised or stocked as everything in the Farm shop is so overpriced in most cases at least over 50% so not surprising you don’t see many people put much or anything in their shopping basket!!!

We have visited many times . It certainly is a great place to take children. The shop has a fabulous selection of products. Sadly we have found over the years as the restaurant has expanded it has lost its charm , feeling more like a holiday camp restaurant. Could certainly do without the piped music.

After half an hour wait for take away fish and chips, the fish has got to be the worst I’ve ever eaten, overcooked hard dry rubbish, I certainly wouldn’t recommend this place for fish and chips

This place has gone downhill and we shall not be returning. Waitress was rude as she delivered our food, dairy free butter alternative not provided as asked, decaf coffee was not decaf and disgustingly strong plus food really was not up to standard.

Awful, awful, awful!! Food ordered in advance for 7:10 for collection…40 minutes later it’s STILL not ready. If I hadn’t prepaid on line I’d tell them where they could put it and head to somewhere that can manage to fulfil an order. Ironically the order confirmation said ‘your order is being prepared’ .

Just the worst. At least a forty minutes wait upon ordering, for some of the disgruntled queue much longer. Sloppy service. Poor food. I'd give it one star but wouldn't wish anyone to filter a genuine review out as malicious. Poor all round, save your time. Oh and the farm shops silly overpriced and full of crap.

I am still go smacked at the response I got at the till on Monday 20th Nov. I ordered sausage roll, beans and chips. At £8 I wasn’t expecting gourmet but the pastry on the sausage roll was rock hard. My friends enjoyed their jacket potatoes so I didn’t complain ( not that anyone came to ask if all was ok. So when I went to pay I mentioned that the pastry was rock hard and inedible…. The girl on the till said “I’m not surprised it came from our Deli”. I walked away and had to ask my friend if I’d heard correctly….. astounding! Needless to say I so t be back.

Went in for Breakfast, and waited for approximately one hour for breakfast. Actually puts you off the food . Dirty cutlery didn’t help , food ok when eventually it came 😩😩

Visited the shop only an was amazed at the number of dogs bought in by the customers. I was appalled however to see the dogs sniffing at the foo items on the shelves near to the floor. I watched dogs sniffing around muslin covered Xmas puddings for example. It was stomach churning and the dog owners made no effort to restrain them. It makes you question the hygiene standards of the place. As in the country I would not want to eat any food item below two feet from the ground in any event from this shop. Yuck!

I’m not on to complain normally but…. Have visited twice in the last week, ( I live locally), firstly to the cafe, table booked online for inside only to be sat outside on arrival, when I pointed out that I’d booked inside the staff member just shrugged and said they were busy and outside was all they had. (Frankly he was rude and had a couldn’t care less attitude) What is the point of them having a booking system then?! We did get moved inside as soon as a table became available. Secondly, was for takeaway fish & chips, thankfully the food was its saviour but again the service was poor, I’d preordered online, turned up for collection at my allotted time slot only to have to wait 20 minutes, people walking in to order got served and left before me. Both times staff were rude/ surly…come on Greendale you can do better than this. At least give your staff some training and put decent systems in place.

Popped in for a cream tea as had been here before and it was good.However this time it was a different story. It was busy and there were lots of staff milling about but none of them seemed to be doing anything. We found a seat outside and went to order to be told we don't serve on the seats outside. So, we asked for a table and the young lady walked away and said someone will see if we have a table. Tom soon found us a table. We walked past tables that hadn't been cleared and food was covering the floor. I went to the counter to order to be told it was table service. Back I went and then after another ten minutes we finally waved down a server and had our order taken. When it arrived the young server laughed and said, these cups are dirty. She went off to change them and returned with clean cups but no cutlery. We had to go and find this for ourselves. None of the staff seemed that bothered in working, clearing tables or taking orders, they just wandered around looking bored. When we finished we went back inside to pay where there was someone who took our payment. The single scone was very soft and light and you did have a generous portion of jam and cream but service was awful. It just seemed chaotic and unorganized. Unfortunately we won't be returning. We we will give the Mill in Otterton a try.

Terrible service, drink order was brought out wrong, dirty glass, then wine measurement was very lacking. Waitress attitude was disgusting. Suggest some staff training. Food was so so, items missing. We will not be returning. It's a shame, this place has alot of potential.

Decided to give Greendale cafe another visit, our last visit two years ago they had no crab sandwiches despite having crab for sale in the shop. This time we both ordered the cream tea (when someone eventually came to take the order) When it arrived the scones were hot, so waited for them to cool, they were quite chewy. On one plate the cream and jam were in ceramic pots the other it was in little paper pots, the tea was quite weak too. There are a lot of staff here but despite that the service is very poor, the staff are mainly young and seem to lack training. I like stopping off here and looking around the farmshop, but they don't seem to sell the same range of local products, honey, chutneys etc that I used to like to buy. Don't think we will be back.

Very disappointed with food this visit. I have food intolerances which I have identified via NHS using the low FODMAP diet. This means I can’t eat peas. Previously Greendales have substituted the peas but this time were ‘unable’ to other than baked beans! This is a farm shop with many vegetables for sale! Next I asked for grain mustard but they only had English, again they sell many different ones. The gammon was over cooked and the chips mediocre, mostly small bits not full chips. We are unlikely to visit again as there are better farmshop facilities in the area.

We had lunch at the cafe on 10/09 which was a disappointment. We sat down, waited 10 minutes before we had to ask twice to take our drinks order, then the drinks arrived half way through our meal. Food was disappointing; roast potatoes were shrivelled up rocks, soggy Yorkshire puddings, fish was overcooked. We finished our meals with the intention of ordering a few desserts but waited 30 minutes with no service, even our plates were not cleared away so we gave up. Overall the service and food means we won’t be recommending.

We went for a meal ahead of going to a show and have never receive worse service. We were at first given a table where the air conditioning was blowing on to us, we asked to move and were given a corner table. Twice we had to ask if we cold order - one order was for olives and the waitress looked as if she had never heard of them, our main course was very good after finishing we sat for over twenty minutes waiting to order a pudding and coffee, not one of the waiting staff came in our direction and there were only five table in use. Two were at the reception and half a dozen behind the counter chatting as they did things including pushing one member of staff around in a trolley. We decided to give up and went and paid the bill - we were asked if we enjoyed our visit - I said it was terrible and he replied sorry. as we walked out he wished us a good evening

Fish and chips. Amateurish, staff that will not make eye contact and always face away so they don't have to talk to anyone. Just witnessed the greendale chef roasting them over serving burnt food. Used to be really good. Now at best average.

Visited here in holidays Wow Wow Wow food was outstanding lamb shank served with seasonal wedge over rosemary . Best meal all week boys has the scampi and chips and cod and chips freshly made from there famous chip shop on site . Thank you for lovely food great helpful polite staff . Clean place . Also have farm shop all local produce. Well done to the farming family who run this and all there staff . We most definitely will visit again next time we are passing . Popped in on a Saturday lunchtime around midday and it was busy. We were shown to a table and left for quite a while, we had to grab someone to take our order. Food came fairly quickly and was really good. Only thing lacking was cutlery and napkins which we needed to go off and find ourselves. Would definitely return, but feel maybe a couple more members of staff to help things run a little more smoothly would be of benefit to the service being offered.
