Made to feel very welcome after we stumbled upon the place. Food was exquisite did everything they could to cater for me as I only wanted soup and some vegetables. Hubby had a pie and it looked delicious he absolutely cleared his plate. I had potato and leek soup which I can tell you would be worth the 80 mile trip from home to have again.

I must have visited the Grantley Arms over 50 times with a variety of friends and family . The food is ridiculously good and reflects the high standards and care of the staff .The wine list is reasonable and again of very good quality . I have done some fancy and good quality eating in my time both personal and corporate but none better than what I get at the Grantley Arms . I will certainly be returning no matter that I live more than 50 miles away .

No matter how many times you visit the Grantley Arms, it never fails to impress! We live locally and dine at the Grantley Arms regularly. The reason that we keep going back is the friendly welcome, wonderful atmosphere, fabulous food, cooked personally by Val, the owner and the great value which this represents. You can travel further, pay more and fare worse, so next time you’re in the Harrogate/Ripon area, make a booking and look forward to a most enjoyable experience. Quite frankly, The Grantley Arms is “Simply the best; better than all the rest” and we thoroughly recommend it.

A while since I've been but the interior has definitely lost character. The food was very good but the portions nowhere near Yorkshire portions and the price was a tad excessive for quite meagre fare. The wine pricelist was reasonable but the pint of Black Sheep i had so looked forward to was warm. Now i don't want ice cold Yorkshire bitt er but this was room temperature and so disappointing

This pub is mostly a restaurant, yes it is dated but very homely, clean and friendly. There were 9 of us and booked over the phone, they were very accommodating and gave us our own space in the restaurant. At first we were a little worried about the small portion sizes for the price. However when we started eating, we soon realised there was plenty and it was most definitely quality over quantity. I most certainly would rather have absolutely delicious home cooked, well presented food over a huge plate of chips that I can't eat! Nothing was a problem, we have toddlers with us & the children's meals were just as tasty. There was nothing left on our plates when we left, that says everything. Mains & desserts equally tasty! We asked for the children's food to come out as soon as it was ready, again no problem! We will definitely be coming back, when we visit again. Thank you :)

We treat our friends to a meal at the Grantley from time time and they always want to return. The Grantley Arms changed ownership around 2000 and the current owners have maintained the high standard. The service is “friendly and welcoming with some good humour thrown in” . We chose “ Curry Vegetarian Dish” Fish Pie” “ Beef Strong Enough” and “Pork Fillet” “ all beautifully cooked . Food portions are “spot on” and as we are in Yorkshire we always manage to clear our plates. Our Thanks to the Grantley team.

The Grantley Arms is a tidy but quite dated country pub. The staff are friendly and helpful and the food is better than average in terms of quality. Now putting aside the rising cost of living, which has affected pricing, the portions here are frugal! My fish pie was lovely, however at just shy of seventeen pound the food content was more like a starter. I don't understand, in a field where competition is fierce, why food quantity is so miserly. The Grantley Arms for a Saturday night was quiet and the food was not high end but decent enough. But what incentive is there to return when you leave knowing that you've been short changed and you are still hungry. We did not expect giant plates but you do expect an average amount for adult consumption. Our friends described their salads as bland to which I cannot comment and my wife's steak pie was good. Again all undersized for adults. Come On Grantley! You have a real opportunity to give value for money and still make a good profit by filling more tables. As it stands we would be crazy to return.

Because of some unfortunate (but fortunate events for us) we ended up attended this lovely country pub. And can I tell you the pie was to die for. It’s was steak and ale and you could tell they were home made. The staff were lovely, welcoming and just a delight to be around. Will be returning again soon hopefully.

We booked for our honey moon during a time when covid was still rampant - the pub was allowed to serve outdoors only under the rules at the time but due to mild weather and therefore lack of customers, it would probably have been shut if not for our booking that day. We wanted to eat out regardless and kept our coats on. The husband and wife duo that hosted us were an absolute delight and the service was second to none. I wish I lived close by so that I could go all the time! I cannot recommend this place for food and drink highly enough! Priced in the mid-range but the food would not be out of place served at twice the price and sold as fine dining. If you happen to be within even an hour of here then it is well worth attending.

My husband and I booked for lunch. It was his birthday and my first trip out after knee surgery. It is simply a gem of a place. Farrow and Ball it certainly isn't, but it is a warm, comfortable and welcoming place serving the most delicious food. The menu is immense and makes choosing very difficult, and the day we arrived there were 3 specials on offer too, a pie, salmon wellington and a thai curry. However, I ordered beef stroganoff, (my husband had the pie). We were served freshly baked rolls to keep us going followed by enormous portions of completely yummy food. If this all sounds unbelievable and over the top, believe me, it is not, do go!! Eric and his partner run a very tight and highly efficient ship and are to be supported and congratulated in these chaotic times. We will be back.

Well, how often does your local pub give you a lovely relaxing experience? The Grantley Arms is a pub that does it in spades. The warm welcome from the front of house is one of those 'old timers' that should be preserved for prosperity. A consummate professional with a balanced cheekiness that comes with experienced confidence. The food, clearly produced by someone who cares. This is not Michelin, neither should it be - just good quality and good flavours.

We have eaten at the Grantley a few times and there is always a warm and friendly welcome. The menu is traditional, the food well presented and consistently good. The only negative is the family cat which has the run of the restaurant. We feel that a dining room is not the place for animals. Sadly it has put us off returning which is a shame as it is a lovely place.

We have been staying in Grantley for a week, and decided to have an easy meal here for our last evening - we WISH we had tried the Grantley Arms earlier in the week so we could have gone again before leaving! Such a lovely warm and welcoming pub.We all enjoyed the fresh warm bread. We all had starters - all lovely, but extra points for the sorbet that accompanied the prawn cocktail, so yummy!Three of us had a fish pie, which came with tasty cabbage that we all fought over! And the mushroom wellington was gorgeous! We weren’t going to have pudding... but we decided to indulge as the mains were so yummy and we didn’t want to miss out! They were all spectacular... the lemon tart was the best I have ever had - and I have tried a lot! Eric and Val have obviously put a lot of love and effort into creating such a lovely local for people from close and a far to enjoy - if I ever return to the area it’ll be the first place I visit for a spot of homely and tasty food!10/10 service,10/10 food and wine!

We arrived at the Grantley quite by chance. We were warmly received and the customer service couldn't have been better. We chose to be seated outside in the late afternoon sunshine. After our mains we asked to move in for dessert and we got a lovely table near the bar.The food was delicious! The best meal we've had out for ages! We had pork belly and stroganoff; not cheap but well worth the money. The dessert menu contained good variety and the Frangipane was excellent (we also got a complimentary biscuit each). We arrived quite early after opening so there were no other oustomers until we were having dessert, however the atmosphere was still so comfy and homely. The decor is perhaps dated, but it really serves to add to the feel and authenticity of the place. It's such a shame it's so far away from where we live!

Brandy snap baskets and sherry trifle on the dessert menu tell you all you need to know about this very - shall we say - traditional dining experience.Eric and Val bought the pub in the early noughties and, it seems, little has changed since. Details include crisp white tablecloths, swirly carpet patterns, lots of paper doilies, farmhouse style wooden chairs and bills written on a photocopied form. For toilets read 'cloakroom'. Everything is very calm and ordered and the waitresses most meek. Service was a bit sluggish (we were inside for 90 mins) but, as it stresses on the menu, everything is cooked fresh to order. The restaurant (it's not really a pub) seems to rely on long established and loyal clientele who know the owners by name. Many of the gents turn out in jackets and ties. In fact, my children, aged 20 and 17, were the youngest by at least 30 years. The food is fine and very much all home cooked in a "going round to your Grannies" sort of way. My roast pheasant was tender and tasty and the cheesy leeks were good as was the berry crumble and custard dessert. The menu on Sundays is essentially roasts or fish and chips. I thought it was pricey at £21.95 for two courses. All in all, a handy stop-off on our walk and perfect for pensioners but, for us, the meal didn't feel much like a treat.

We met friends at this typical country pub and restaurant. We had previously booked a table but on arrival had to wait several minutes whilst ‘mine host’ finished whatever he was doing behind the bar ..... a nod of acknowledging our presence would have been acceptable. He was very friendly and pleasant later, explaining about the menu etc.The food was very tasty with reasonably large portions as we were very pleased that we had declined a starter.Waiting staff were pleasant and attentive.I can recommend the venison meal as delicious

This is so close to being an excellent restaurant. My wife had beef stroganoff whilst I had fish pie. Both meals were good. The stroganoff was close to £19 (overpriced) whilst the fish pie was over £14, which would have been worth it if the portion was beyond small. Service was great. We would definitely come again although they really need to look at their wine list. Cheapest large wine starts at £6.95. So if you were to get four glasses out of a bottle the bottle would cost £27.80! That is probably why they don't sell by the bottle.A slightly keener priced menu and realistic wine pricing would have achieved five stars!

Having heard mixed reviews we thought we should bite the bullet and give the pub a try. We met our friends at the bar. They had already been waiting to be served for a good 10 minutes when we arrived. Eventually after a further 10 minutes we politely asked the gentleman behind the bar if it would be possible for us to have a drink and that we were booked to dine. He suggested that we went to our table where he would take our drinks order and bring us menus. A further 20 minutes later no one had come to our table and he gentleman behind the bar had been busy serving casual drinkers who had arrived long after he had promised to take our order. I finally had to go back to the bar and ask yet again could we please have drinks and a menu. The drinks finally arrive but no menus. We had to catch the attention of a waitress (no easy task) to finally get the menu. Food was ordered and despite having to go back to the bar to ask for a second drink it arrived quite promptly so clearly there are no problems with the kitchen staff! No one at any point asked us if the food was ok (which fortunately it was) throughout the meal and the plates were cleared without the common curtesy of asking if everyone had finished. Fortunately as this was a social meet with friend the delays in service was laughed off and didn’t spoil our evening but did make us decide there are too many other nice pubs and restaurants where the standard of the service matches the food and so we will not be returning I hasten to add that the pub was in no way busy with a maximum of 20 diners in total the whole time we were there.

Six people arriving at 12.30 on a Saturday Lunchtime, seemed to cause a bit of a panic, however the gentleman behind the bar arranged two tables together for us and went off in search of menus. As others arrived he saw to them and eventually came back to us, explaining daily specials and fish of the day, before disappearing again. The place is charming with a sense of Olde English charm and excentricity thrown in, when we asked the lady who delivered home made bread and butter to the table if we could order she replied " I cant take it he's got the book" (do they only have one) our friend eventually came back and was very charming in the way he took orders for food and drink, the bread was outstanding the butter amongst the best I have ever eaten, being short on time we only had the main course which everyone enjoyed, everything is made on the premisses and is out of this world, It says on the menu we dont do fast foo we do food as fast as we can, which is correct, but as in the title it was worth the wait, home made pies, excellent, would I go again absolutely yes.

This was our second visit to the Grantley, earlier in the summer we ate on the Terrace, this time we ate inside as the weather was less than promising. The Grantley has a very Gentle and friendly feel, at once you feel ‘at home’. We were met by the same Gentleman behind the Bar, Eric if I am not mistaken? Eric is a genial, quiet kind of Chap and adds an Air of reserved but professional service in the Bar, I say bar, but realistically this is a hotel rather than just a Pub. The standard of service by the other staff testify to this, we felt very relaxed and welcome, Thank you to Eric and all the staff. The Menu can be Al la carte or they also do a fixed two course (£16.95) or three course (£19.95) set menu and represents pretty good value, the quality of the food on this occasion was, as last time, excellent. I had the Grantley Fish pie and was swayed into a Victoria plum crumble dessert, both on the set menu and extremely good, the pie was served with Fine green Beans and roast (glorious) carrots. My good lady went for the Beef Stroganoff (steak) from the Al la carte which she described as one of the best Goulashes she has ever had and followed up with a summer fruit trifle which she was in raptures about. It’s not cheap here our meal including drinks and (well deserved tips) was £70 for two. However it is a special place and represents good value overall. We would have had coffee, but found ourselves more than sated and in need of a good walk.

I went with family for Sunday lunch. When booking we told them there was a vegan coming, so I could be sure I'd have something to eat other than salad and chips! I was so impressed to see the menu! There was a vegan option for every course, printed on the main menu but clearly marked vegan. To start I had the melon with their homemade sorbet which was delicious and for desert I had a summer pudding, which was also lovely but I was so full I wasn't able to finish it! What most impressed me however was the main: teriyaki tofu with stir fried veg and rice. Many chefs of "traditional" British food do not touch tofu as it can be tricky to get right if not used to cooking it. This was perfect and the whole meal was such a pleasant change from the standard easy option of mushroom risotto and fruit salad I've often had from restaurants. Service was friendly, the menu and food great for the meat eaters I was with and the pub is nice and clean, and so pretty outside. The menu also clearly marked several gluten free options, if this is helpful to anyone.

Maggie Johnson, the proprietress of Mallard Grange B&B recommended that we eat here. We're indebted to her. The food was wonderful, the place has a lovely ambiance and the staff were friendly without being intrusive. They had nice wines on offer that were not too dear. I had the pork belly on both nights. {We came back because it was so good!} The pork belly was pulled pork pressed into a block. it came with applesauce and gravy and luscious creamed leeks. My wife had venison. The bread service was good bread with a nice crust and crumb and the balsamic in the oil was viscous and sweet, while the butter was deep yellow. Very good coffee served in a French press - strawberry pavlova for "pudding" - that's what the English call dessert.

A very pleasant experience, the staff are polite and extremely friendly. The menu offers a wide range of dishes and portion size can be adjusted to suite little ones. I would recommend the Thai green curry, it was simply beautiful. Will definatley return when next in the area.

A charming pub, albeit a bit old fashioned, in a beautiful location. We found the food to be excellent and of very high quality. The prawn cocktail came with avocado sorbet, the homemade scotch came with proper piccalilli; there was attention detail with every course, even the vegetable side dishes were exemplary, rather than an after thought. The real ale was also perfectly kept. The serving staff were polite and welcoming. One could describe the interior as a tad dated, with a predominantly peach colour scheme, but it makes for a very cosy and welcoming environment nonetheless. The pub seems to have a large clientele of regulars who seem to travel quite a distance. I can see why and we will certainly be going back too.

We stayed locally for a couple of nights and were recommended The Grantley Arms by fellow guests at our B&B who had eaten there previously. What a good choice - this is a proper village pub, with local ales plus an excellent wine selection, and with a really tasty home made food. This is not about fast food - this is all about freshly cooked, well-presented and delicious meals. A step back in time maybe, but the service was excellent, polite, friendly and leisurely (in a good way). We asked to wait for a while before looking at the dessert menu - no problem, we'll come back in 15 mins. Worth waiting for, by the way!So - don't go if you are in a rush. Do go if you want to enjoy a treat of a meal, without being pressured or on the clock. The food is worth waiting for! Thanks to Eric for the chat!

Well here we go AGAIN (Don't frett, good reviews coming soon) , disturbingly old fashioned outdated decor,MENU -varied selection of local produce sounding very tempting !Started with scallops and local goats cheese, the scallops where cooked perfectly with a nice sauce however very expensive for 3 queen scallops !!Goats cheese was tasteless and very very dry and crumbly !Main course was a trio of venison for both of us, the venison was tasty, however came with seasonal vegetables and a salad which was inappropriate with this dish . Very expensive for the quality and quantity, robotic staff with no personality! Pleasant drive in the country to reach this establishment however !!

Table booked for 18:30, order taken at 19:15 food served at 20:15 very slow service.Fortunately, food was as we expected from previous visits quite acceptable, although now a little more expensive than in the past but price now on par with many quality Hotels/Restaurants in the Harrogate area.We felt the owner was giving priority to serving his local customers and although the waitress was pleasant and courteous, she was clearly finding it difficult to manage the number of diners, clearly lack of staff.Afraid to say that as there are many excellent pubs/restaurants in the area we are unlikely to return.I

We popped over to Grantley as we heard they were doing a bank holiday pub quiz! We rounded up a few teams to ensure a good turn out for this village quiz night, however when we turned up we soon realised we were not welcome! After standing at the bar for 15 minutes waiting to speak to someone about the quiz and ordering 15+ drinks, we were totally ignored! We had to grab a waitress and ask her who basically told us we would not be playing. Wasn't even offered a drink - no attempt was made to offer any sort of hospitality. Will never return. Food and drink service is far better in the next villages of sawley and Markington. I'd recommend this pub if you like to be ignored.

We stopped here for dinner and was more than impressed at the quality of the food. Service was perfect and the portion sizes were ideal. For a change I had room for a dessert and the passion fruit sorbet was superb, all of which came a a very reasonable price, certainly not the cheapest but well worth it. Enjoyed ourselves so much we came back the following night to take advantage of the takeaway fish and chips which again were fantastic. Will definitely visit here again if I am in the area.

This place is a real find. A charming, traditional pub offering good beer and cider with excellent food. The staff are very welcoming and friendly and definitely "go the extra mile" to ensure that everything is of the highest standard. Only word of caution - if you're on a tight timetable this isn't the place for you. Everything is freshly cooked to order - and is certainly worth the wait. If you want a delicious meal in relaxed surroundings then add the Grantley Arms to your next trip to this lovely part of North Yorkshire.

A real gem with separate dining areas - in the main pub or in a dining room set at one side which is nice for a group or if you prefer it a bit more sophisticated. Good range of local produce and several specials - all freshly cooked. a little bit more expensive than some of the other pubs in the area but well worth it.

We were passing, it was lunch time, we stopped. How glad we were to have done so. The proprietor, Eric, and his partner have made a superb job of making quality dining available at this charming country pub. I was intrigued by the Latin motto on the Inn sign: I presume it is the Grantly family motto. It translates as: 'In truth victory'.The selection of drinks was good with a range of hand-pulled beers and ciders. We chose a selection of dishes, all beatifully presented and home-cooked form locally farmed produce wherever possible. Of particular note was the 'Grantley Pie' of the day served with cheesy creamed potato cake and beautifully sweet mini carrots. Others chose fish and chips. The batter was wonderfully light and not greasy at all. All in all a lucky find and we will plan to pass here at meal times in future.

Having decided to take wife for a day out I checked TripAdvisor and landed on this little beauty. I was a first a little confused as the website says The Grantley Arms and the sign outside just says The Grantley but once inside there was no mistaking the friendly attitude of the staff as we took our table. The food was magnificent, the atmosphere great and the staff very pleasant. My one worry would be how long the food service would take if they were really busy. My wife enjoyed her lunch so much that she would like to return.

Called in for Lunch after walking near Eavestone lake. Lovely welcome from mine host. Unfortunately outside tables were full - but we'd had our share of the warm sunny weather on our walk, so we relaxed in the bar.Although we only had a light lunch I think this was one of the best meals I've had. I chose the Fish Platter, a mix of hot and cold fish. The fish batter was so light - and the chips (cooked to order - not frozen) were out of this world.Next time I think I'll try their Fish Pie - although the venison is very tempting. They do take-away fish and chips, and you can also order by phone take-away fresh fish for collection the following day. This is the perfect way to run a country inn and restaurant.

Whilst traveling from Harrogate to Kirkby Malzeard decided to stop at the Grantley Arms for a "swift half". What a surprise we received when we entered the premises. There in front of us was a very inviting restaurant come bar exhibiting a very friendly atmosphere. The staff were extremely friendly, helpful and efficient. The place impressed that much that we asked if they had a table available. We were directed to a vacant table with pristine tablecloth and cutlery. The menu is interesting along with specials of the day. I chose Fish Pie which was absolutely incredible, the best I have ever eaten and my wife chose Scampi which she stated was the best she had tasted for several years. Every thing was fresh well presented and delivered to the table with style and enthusiasm. This establishment put my faith back into the British gastro pub with its relaxing decor, great staff and good food and drink. We will definitely return in the near future.

So step back in time folks to a place where good old fashioned service meets mouth watering pub grub. Welcome to the Grantley Arms. It's the sort of place when you arrive long past lunch hours and the landlord says of course you can get fed! And boy were we fed. Delicious streak sandwich, every mouthful melted in the mouth. Chips to die for and a side salad of pure healthiness that made you think you'd hit the jackpot. And great value too. Places like this are few and far between nowadays so make your way to this pub. It's an oasis of pure fabulousness in a world of faceless bland and dull food and service.

We had a rushed day trip to the area and asked locals for a recommendation, and the Grantley Arms came up. It was a March Saturday lunchtime in less than average weather conditions, but the place was reasonably frequented albeit mainly by locals. Good choice of beers, prompt service, good value lunch set meal. Soup of the day was delicious, our contacts had recommended quite rightly the scotch egg, fish pie main was tasty and filling, so there was no room for puddings.

We decided to try this restaurant when we discovered that our usual one about a mile away, is undergoing refurbishment. We were not disappointed, this is a lovely eatery. The service was friendly and efficient. I had the small haddock and chips, (as I had noticed a rather delicious sounding dessert further down the menu) and wanted to leave some room. You can have either a large F&C or a small. To be frank the small, was well big enough. My partner had the pie of the week, which turned out to be ham and broccoli. Both meals were excellent. Nicely served by friendly staff. We both partook of the Lemon and orange Pavlova for dessert. Delicious. You do need to leave yourself time, as they cook to order. We will definitely return. The Grantley Arms is well placed near Fountains Abbey for those having a day out in that area.

Visited for a birthday. Menu is varied and all freshly cooked to order. A warm welcome from the owners, nothing was too much trouble. Food was of a high quality - we had the venison, belly pork and casserole all beautifully presented and piping hot. Puddings were delicious can recommend the rhubarb trio. Will return here next time we're visiting. I bet it's gorgeous on the summer but is cosy by the fire in the winter.

Popped in whilst looking for a quick lunch. Very unusual setting for a tea room but works well with about 10 tables set up between the pews & the altar. The pews act as an overflow area if all tables are taken but we arrived as one was being vacated. Very friendly staff, a relaxing atmosphere and excellent value for money. Menu is limited to a choice of rolls, soup and a tempting range of homemade cakes & scones. Rolls could have improved if pickle, mustard or mayonnaise had been offered but the cakes & scones made up for this as they were very nice. The church itself is a delightful building and worth a visit in it’s own right. An interesting alternative lunch option.
