Went on a wet Wednesday in October, cheered up as soon we entered. Whether full or quieter The Alice always has a cosy welcoming atmosphere and is always immaculate. Food is fabulous. We started with Thai/Korean flavoured fried cauliflower a littler different, bursting with flavour . My main was a perfectly cooked (for me) medium+ breast of duck presented with a "pot" of peas, onions ,lardons and duck together with perfectly cooked chips, it is terrific dish. The other half (who eats like a mouse) had a second starter as a main; scallops with pork belly with a side of honey roasted beetroot all of which she really enjoyed and thought the combination worked really well. No room for puds, but we did enjoy a fairly priced nice bottle Negromaro from the extensive wine and thoughtful wine list which which puts many 5 star hotels to shame. The young front of house team are very professional; informed and friendly. Simply the best dining pub we know by far

The pub is in a lovely spot over-looking the green. You can eat inside or outside, and both are great. We were warned that on Sunday they 'do not do Sunday roast', which was a great relief as their standard menu is exceptional. After several visits I have got used to the parade of Porsches and Lambos parked for weekend lunchers and despite being busy, the service was exceptional, relaxed and a nice pace for a leisurely lunch. The pub is a bit out of the way but worth the trip as the food, drink, service and general ambience are exceptional and everything you'd hope for from one of the better gastro pubs in the very competitive Yorkshire foodie scene.

We came on Sunday for a family birthday celebration and had the private Snug room for the occasion. As first time patrons I was looking forward to coming and seeing what their food would be like. Well I cannot say enough about how lovely everything was. The service was fantastic, all the staff were great and couldn’t have done a better job, so big thanks to them. The food was absolutely beautiful, and so well made and of fantastic quality you honestly couldn’t fault it whatsoever. We also had a special request due to one of our party having a special diet request due to illness, we called ahead and spoke to a very helpful staff member who helped us organize to cater to that request. On the day it was delivered beautifully and really made the day of all of us, so thank you guys for being so fantastic and kind to take care of that, we really did appreciate it so much. All in all we really enjoyed coming and we are already looking forward to coming back. Thanks so much for a lovely day 🩵

We had two delicious evening meals here this week, whilst staying down the road at the Yorkshire Heart Vineyard in our campervan. The pub is absolutely beautiful, set in a village/hamlet where cows roam the streets and willow trees drape over ponds abundant with ducks and swans. I love that despite the Alice being rather upmarket (the quality of the cutlery, crockery, tables, chairs), it’s managed to retain the old proper pub feel with having multiple little spaces and we were able to dine in two different areas. This is a particular plus because I find restaurants are generally quite open plan and loud environments. The different spaces creates a lovely warm atmosphere. Adored the blush pink colour drenching in the ladies bathrooms. The staff were so friendly and attentive (remembering what we’d had the day before) but without being too invasive or insincere when asking how our meals were. The wine selection is vast, the menu is perfectly curated. We have been dreaming about the food since getting home. The only criticism (which might be personal preference) is that we both found the sauces/jus that came with each dish to be a little too salty for us- it did not interfere with us devouring the dishes, we were just a touch more thirsty throughout the night. The first night we had steak, myself the fillet and other half the ribeye, both medium rare. We were apprehensive as we’ve recently decided to only eat steak at steak specific establishments as they’re often underwhelming. Our go-to for steak is gaucho in Manchester but this rivals it and I’d go as far as saying it’s the best steak I’ve had in a very long time! I applaud the chefs for this. Side note: we’re not usually a fan of a sauce with steak but my other half was particularly taken with the peppercorn sauce that came with it. The sticky toffee pudding could stand toe-to-toe with Cartmel’s- the home of sticky toffee pudding. The second night, my other half had scallops, pork and banoffee pie, which were exquisite and I enjoyed the chicken supreme with a zesty refreshing strawberry based dessert; all washed down with a velvety primitivo and the night was nicely rounded off with the tiramisu espresso martini. Thank you to everyone at the Alice, we had such a lovely time visiting you. It was worth every penny and I’m already eyeing up coming to stay in one of the rooms at the back (they look like something from grand designs)! We booked for both evenings and it was busy (the races were on) so I would recommend doing so to avoid disappointment.

What can I say, we went with friends for a 60th birthday and from the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and all the staff were very attentive and extremely friendly. Then we move on to the food, each and every dish was fantastic and arguably some of the best meals we have ever had. Also when we first went in, we sat in the bar side and noticed they accepted dogs, which for me is an out and out winner. Thank you all at The Alice Hawthorne, we had a night to remember.

Lovely meal—the food is really excellent. Great selection of delicious veg (and plenty of them), with the roast dinner. The only thing that didn’t work for me was the cumin seeds in the cabbage. It would have been OK with something else, but not roast lamb and Yorkshire pudding.

After reading so many good reviews, I expected to have an excellent birthday meal here and was left very disappointed. The service set the tone for an unpleasant evening when our server came to take our order ages after we'd sat down and without a smile. When I asked if I could swap the side dish that came with my main course our server said yes while rolling his eyes and saying "you'll have to pay extra". I got a steak and it was medium done instead of medium-rare. It was so chewy I had to cut it into tiny pieces and eat it like a bird. None of the dishes we tried were anything exceptional, I've eaten better in normal little pubs. The only positive was the lovely room we stayed in and I would come back for a stay but eat elsewhere.

I believe £50 for two courses was very expensive considering the mediocre food and patchy service. It was Mother's Day so we accepted the hike in price .The starter was nothing special ,pate came with three miniscule slices of hard bread .My guests opted for desserts. The waiter spent a lot of his time talking to a couple who were clearly regulars sitting at a table some distance from us,it was impossible to get his attention without walking up to him!The roast potatoes were hard,Yorkshire puddings cold but good cauliflower cheese and plentiful vegetables., meat good too.The banoffee pie was a tiny filo pastry case with banana and toffee sauce ,not the best I've had.We came away feeling we had been taken for a ride and will not be back.

We have just dined here for lunch today and we were blown away. We were lucky to have the pleasure of meeting Clare and John who run it the night before and they told us about their beautiful pub/restaurant, whilst in the area we managed to book a table for lunch. The village is absolutely beautiful and upon driving through the car park we just knew it would be good, the hotel and garden rooms look amazing. We had a lovely table in the bar and loved seeing the real ale pumps. We saw they had handmade crisps written on the blackboard and ordered some and they were just wow, hot and fresh and garlicky, just delicious. We had 3 courses as each one was so good. We both had the chefs special scallops to start with ox cheek which was delightful, we then had rump of lamb and venison with a nice glass of Pinot, the lamb came with a side of breaded belly pork which was absolutely delicious, we finished with a lovely trio of local in season rhubarb desserts and chocolate melted pudding which was outstanding, really was, never had a melt pudding like it. The staff were fabulous, really friendly and welcoming. The log fire was on and it was nice and busy. We could not recommend this restaurant highly enough and just so glad we now know about it. We’d love to come back. Thank you so much to John and Clare and family for their hospitality and excellent service and food.

If you're looking for expensive snacks (they call them meals), this is the place. We had tasteless leek and potato watered down soup to start. Followed by a few vegetables on a plate. To be fair we were the only vegans in the party but even for the meat eaters, unless they were having fish and chips, the cooks made sure you had plenty of plate surface to look at. The service was very average bordering on canteen style which didn't stop them adding a whopping service charge to the bill. Not made clear that this is discretionary. We didn't pay this!

We took our Mums to The Alice Hawthorn for a special treat yesterday. As always, it is special. The food cannot be faulted in any way. The atmosphere in both the bar area and the restaurant is uplifting The only negative to report, is the loose dog running round the bar. We are dog lovers, and think it’s great that dogs are allowed in the bar. However did feel sorry for those diners who had chosen to eat there, with an uncontrolled fox red Labrador running round the tables !

What a revelation, a super pub/restaurant a short drive from where I live, in a village I have never visited before. Nun Monkton is at the end of a long side road off the main A59 Harrogate to York road. Previously I had only ventured as far as the vineyard (also worth a visit) but then as far again and the road emerges into the prettiest of villages with open greens and several duck ponds. The Alice Hawthorn (named for a famous racehorse I was told) is a lovely old building on the green, with a large car park at the back. Also at the back is a group of new, architecturally interesting buildings, which seem to comprise bedrooms and private dining rooms. The main pub is very well presented inside, with a strong contemporary feel inside a much older structure. We arrived for a 1.30 lunch and the place was already pretty busy. The first thing that struck me was how warm and cosy it was on this very cold and frosty day. The service was attentive without being oppressive, and the food was absolutely superb. We had not intended to have three courses at lunchtime, but suffice it to say, we were tempted to do so by the excellent menu. It is reasonably expensive. It worked out at just over £75 a head for three courses and (light) drinks. It was however it beautifully presented, inventively prepared, and delivered in generous portion sizes. I was hooked from my first course which was the tuna…how do you describe a taste explosion. I am sure wherever you look on the menu there will be something to excite. It might take you a while to choose…then you’ll have to go back again to try something else. We definitely will.

It was a difficult night for the team at the Alice Hawthorn as the electricity supply to the village was down affecting the kitchen and some of rooms. Our room wasn't affected except for lack of Internet. The team produced a short menu that could be cooked on the fancy Japanese bbq and/ or cold items. Food was very good and more so given the circumstances. The staff were excellent, upbeat and charming. Would definitely return to experience the full menu.

We were looking for somewhere to eat on our way to York and ended up finding ourselves here. The place is very picturesque from the outside, the lights on the buildings really look the part. It's a massive venue, much bigger than we expected from our first impression. Once inside we made our way to the bar and asked if it was possible to get some food, the bartender showed us the specials menu on a blackboard above the fireplace and said there was a table 'through there' we could have. We ordered drinks and set about going to the table when a customer suggested we stay in the bar area as it was going to be cold where the server had suggested. We redirected ourselves to a table that had just been vacated, got sat down and were moved within minutes to the proper restaurant area as where we were sat had been booked for half seven. There was a sign indicating this though we hadn't planned on being there that long anyway. Once seated we were asked if we wanted some water for the table to which we replied yes, the water however never arrived. I wouldn't say the menu was overly big but it was very high end in terms of price, we settled for a few sides and couldn't complain about the quality of the food but would think for the pricing the service would have been slightly better than it was.

We stayed here for the night while travelling back to Aberdeen from Norfolk. The location is excellent as it is around 10 minutes from the A1. As you enter the village it is like stepping back in time - A beautiful country village that harks back to calmer, quieter times. The pub itself is really nicely appointed, and the rooms are wonderful. Most are located in separate buildings just behind the main pub. They are Scandinavian style lodges, with all mod cons and plenty of space. They have a very new feel to them, which is in direct contrast to the olde worlde feel of the pub. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and serves up excellent food.

Nice touches which not everywhere does anymore…bubble bath is you wish to soak, water, milk and freshly baked biscuits. A light on a sensor in the bathroom so you don’t have to search for a switch during the night. Dinner was very tasty with a good choice of different meats and fish…vegetarian and vegan choices? No idea. Who cares. A very good nights sleep followed. Breakfast was a veritable feast with many choices and all the while being looked after by the attentive Nicole who seemed to appear just as you needed something. Bravo! It’s not cheap, but nothing is anymore, and we think if you compare it to other places aiming at similar people, it’s up there. Well worth a visit. Thank you.

Booked for luncheon and arrived a little early so sat in the bar but was soon shown through to our table. Ordered a couple of drinks whilst trying to decide what to eat. The choice is limited but great choice of dishes. Starters were just lovely with prawns and goat cheese followed by fillet steak and venison. Ordered fine green beans as a side with the venison and oh my goodness, if I could have them daily, I would. Plates were very soon emptied with comments like Mmmmm and ohhhhh yes for the fillet. Venison was served pink and if you haven't tried it that way, Please do. Desserts again all looked amazing but we eventually went with the cheese board to share and an alfagoto each, served with a shot of liqueur. Every single mouthful was truly delightful. The staff were attentive and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would imagine the venue to be one for social occasions as our meal ( 3 courses each plus 1 pint and a couple of gins) came in at just under £170.00. We certainly couldn't afford to eat here weekly but a once a month treat would most definitely be on the cards. So, why 4 star and not 5? Yes, the food was very good as was the service but there is always room for improvement. We shall look forward to our next trip to see if the 5 stars can be given.

What an amazing find in a beautiful village! We stayed in ‘Hay’ overnight and had a wonderful stay. The room was on the first floor with plenty of light and ventilation. The bathroom was large and a fabulous bath! The room was decorated tastefully, little touches of bottled water and fresh milk in the fridge was great. The night light in the bathroom was very useful. The bed was super comfy, the pillows were gorgeous so much so we have ordered some! The only thing missing was a bath robe which would have been useful. We had a fabulous meal in the restaurant, it was a 10/10 for quality and service. We had 3 attempts at choosing a bottle of red wine, this was unfortunate but the pubs wine supplier had not arrived that day with their order. The whole pub has a lovely relaxing feel to it and we will definitely return.

We stayed for dinner and an overnight stay. Our room was in the new building and was delightful and comfortable, great decor and excellent welcome from the team. Dinner and service was outstanding, I can certainly recommend the venison. Wifi is a bit patchy in the room, but who needs it when you are in such a wonderful setting

We stayed for one night in a garden room. The pub is located in a beautiful quaint village, complete with village green and duck pond. The pub building has been beautifully renovated and the garden rooms are modern, comfortable and spacious with gorgeous decor and every convenience. We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was delicious and service was very good, the setting is very attractive with a pleasant ambiance. Breakfast was fabulous, freshly cooked to order with a great choice. We would highly recommend a visit here.

We stayed overnight in the lovely courtyard rooms. Dinner was delicious. The ceviche was once of the loveliest things I have ever eaten, followed by another wonderful fish dish and a shared chocolate pudding. My husband had two different duck dishes and was very happy....

We had an amazing meal here - all three courses were delicious! The starter of king prawns was delicate, buttery and a nice hit of garlic. The waygu beef steak was cooked to perfection, tender and super flavourful. And their take on tiramisu stole the show, such lovely flavours of coffee and cream all came together. I’d highly recommend it!

Excellent village pub/restaurant. We sat outside on the front terrace in the sun, whilst overlooking the beautiful village green of Nun Monkton. Service was excellent throughout, food was even better and drinks matched too. Also dog-friendly - 5* from Paddy too 🐾!

Garden rooms are very nicely designed (although a little warm in the sunshine). Interesting (perhaps unique) addition of a herd of cows, who also enjoy the facilities. A lovely meal in the restaurant too.

Mixed feelings due to mixed messages about my two night stay here for work. Rather odd reception when I arrived. I was told I was the only guest staying that night. The gentleman at the bar who was booking me in immediately started asking me if I would like a later breakfast so that the staff could come in later in the morning. I explained I had an early start for a meeting. But explained I’d be happy to have a later breakfast the following morning. The following morning arrives - I come down just after 10am to discover the kitchen stopped serving breakfast at 9.30am. (That’s the earliest breakfast finish I know of from any other hotel I’ve stayed in. Appears the staff are running the hotel to serve themselves and their own timings). So, turned out to be an expensive bed and breakfast option with no breakfast available after 9.30am. Doubtful I’d stay here again. Other, better options locally.

Lovely gastro pub in a beautiful village. Good selection of well kept beers. Great friendly, helpful staff. We were unable to eat a la carte as you need to book (missed out I think) the snacks were fantastic especially the pop corn prawns. Will revisit next time we are in the area

Food was really good for the most part - lamb, duck, pig cheek, gochujang chicken. Tiramisu was a bit of a letdown - with a twist but not sure the twist worked. Beautiful place in a beautiful village.

I was really pleased to come here and it looked great on arrival. However, really disappointed with the fried egg sandwich, with one egg. I then bought a scone with jam and butter and a piece of flapjack, nothing special at all, for £9. I did not expect it to be expensive. Go for the breakfast as this is reasonable!!!!

May have been cold outside but the blankets for sitting out with help stay closer to the river for longer in the year. Had the pork and apple sauce roll, must have been half a pig in there - three very thick (and I mean thick) slices, deffo the main event with apple sauce and stuffing the accompaniment they should be.
