This was my second trip to the Alice so that is always a good start. From the car park you enter through the rear and there isn’t really a check in desk however it has never taken long for a member of staff to greet us and show our table. On both occasions we have had a table at the window looking out across the village green which is pretty. I noted the upholstery of my chair was stained which could do with addressing as it doesn’t fit with the quality of the place. The food is wonderful, without being overly pretentious. I had the monk fish, followed by the melting chocolate dessert and coffee. It was all fabulous and we had a great time. It was definitely worth the 2 hour drive!

Lunch review. Beautiful property, tastefully restored and developed, and in a very lovely village, with many hidden treasures. Visited twice for lunch in the bar, both occasions characterised by excellent, friendly, efficient service, outstanding food quality and presentation, and wide range of beverages and cocktails. Really first class, commands robust pricing, and worth it! Our visiting friends were blown away by their visit for lunch with us 👏

We had a two night stay in a garden room and it was perfect. The room had seating area, a walk in shower, deep bath and super king size bed. All ground floor level which was perfect for mobility. The hotel is beautiful, as is the village. The staff team are smashing, friendly, helpful, polite and very professional. Nothing is too much trouble. The food and ambiance was excellent. Location, setting and service are stellar, as is the external architecture. The inside decor though lacks character and feels like a Pottery Barn .. as does the food, again lacks character (and salt), especially the roast - cleanly played but a bit boring. Wine list is ok.

The place looks 10/10, Nun Monkton is stunning and the pub looks promising from the outside. They clearly used a good architect to complete the structure at the back. The service is military, but the food was disappointing. I really wanted to enjoy our meal but it really lacked depth, imagination and unfortunately flavour. The whole place is like a well oiled machine, but where is the passion for food guys. It felt like the focus was on getting covers in and out, to the point that each plate was mastered inline with this efficiency. In your haste you’ve removed the heart of what matters, the taste. Very pretty pub and setting but difficult to go back again.

Our first visit and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Would have given food 5 star but my potatoes were too salty and husband's lamb was a bit dry, could have done with some sort of sauce. Starter was amazing for both of us and the trio of rhubarb desserts just topped the meal off. Staff were brilliant. It looks like a lot that we paid each but that included drinks. Will definitely be returning.

First went here the end of January and stayed over in the the Alice room. The pub is in a beautiful village. Back to the pub, the food was outstanding and great service. Lovely restaurant Great nights sleep and the breakfast was lovely. We enjoyed it that much we returned with friends 4 weeks later. The menu had changed and the food was still amazing. We stayed in a differemt room and both our room and our friends were as lovely as Alice was but i woild say if you can book Alice. The staff are welcoming and friendly. You will find it hard to find a place as great as this. Just a note if you are looking for pub food this isn't the place for you. Alice Hawthorn would give michelin star restaurants a run for their money.

We have visited Alice Hawthorn on many occasions and always had good service and excellent food. Last night was my wife's Birthday so we booked and went for an evening meal. The menu is very good with lots of variety, the staff were as usual very helpful and the waiter guided my wife's choice of Lamb Rump, I had the Fillet Steak and we ordered a bottle of Shiraz. When ordering Lamb you can expect a certain amount of fat, but my wife's Lamb was very gristly and disappointing, unfortunately the staff were busy so we could not attract their attention to complain, so she continued to eat what she could, my steak on the other hand was excellent and my wife wished she had also ordered it. The issue is that for a quality premium priced restaurant the lamb should not have been served in that condition. When eventually I managed to complain to the waitress her response was " I will let the Chef know" we heard no more after that. As it was my wife's birthday we just paid and left without any fuss, but it left us very disappointed. Yes you can get poor cuts of meat but how it was dealt with was the issue.

6 hours after eating popcorn prawns violently sick 😞. Took 48 hours to recover, but at least I lost a few pounds! Rang to advise of illness and told that would let the chef know. Would have been nice to have to have had a sympathetic girl on the phone. Just hoped they cleaned where I sat properly. No other family members ate my menu choices, but we had all eaten the the same home cooked dishes in the last 24 hours and I was the only one to be ill after eating out 🙁.

Went on a wet Wednesday in October, cheered up as soon we entered. Whether full or quieter The Alice always has a cosy welcoming atmosphere and is always immaculate. Food is fabulous. We started with Thai/Korean flavoured fried cauliflower a littler different, bursting with flavour . My main was a perfectly cooked (for me) medium+ breast of duck presented with a "pot" of peas, onions ,lardons and duck together with perfectly cooked chips, it is terrific dish. The other half (who eats like a mouse) had a second starter as a main; scallops with pork belly with a side of honey roasted beetroot all of which she really enjoyed and thought the combination worked really well. No room for puds, but we did enjoy a fairly priced nice bottle Negromaro from the extensive wine and thoughtful wine list which which puts many 5 star hotels to shame. The young front of house team are very professional; informed and friendly. Simply the best dining pub we know by far

The pub is in a lovely spot over-looking the green. You can eat inside or outside, and both are great. We were warned that on Sunday they 'do not do Sunday roast', which was a great relief as their standard menu is exceptional. After several visits I have got used to the parade of Porsches and Lambos parked for weekend lunchers and despite being busy, the service was exceptional, relaxed and a nice pace for a leisurely lunch. The pub is a bit out of the way but worth the trip as the food, drink, service and general ambience are exceptional and everything you'd hope for from one of the better gastro pubs in the very competitive Yorkshire foodie scene.

We came on Sunday for a family birthday celebration and had the private Snug room for the occasion. As first time patrons I was looking forward to coming and seeing what their food would be like. Well I cannot say enough about how lovely everything was. The service was fantastic, all the staff were great and couldn’t have done a better job, so big thanks to them. The food was absolutely beautiful, and so well made and of fantastic quality you honestly couldn’t fault it whatsoever. We also had a special request due to one of our party having a special diet request due to illness, we called ahead and spoke to a very helpful staff member who helped us organize to cater to that request. On the day it was delivered beautifully and really made the day of all of us, so thank you guys for being so fantastic and kind to take care of that, we really did appreciate it so much. We had two delicious evening meals here this week, whilst staying down the road at the Yorkshire Heart Vineyard in our campervan. The pub is absolutely beautiful, set in a village/hamlet where cows roam the streets and willow trees drape over ponds abundant with ducks and swans. I love that despite the Alice being rather upmarket (the quality of the cutlery, crockery, tables, chairs), it’s managed to retain the old proper pub feel with having multiple little spaces and we were able to dine in two different areas. This is a particular plus because I find restaurants are generally quite open plan and loud environments. The different spaces creates a lovely warm atmosphere. Adored the blush pink colour drenching in the ladies bathrooms. The staff were so friendly and attentive (remembering what we’d had the day before) but without being too invasive or insincere when asking how our meals were. The wine selection is vast, the menu is perfectly curated. We have been dreaming about the food since getting home. The only criticism (which might be personal preference) is that we both found the sauces/jus that came with each dish to be a little too salty for us- it did not interfere with us devouring the dishes, we were just a touch more thirsty throughout the night. The first night we had steak, myself the fillet and other half the ribeye, both medium rare. We were apprehensive as we’ve recently decided to only eat steak at steak specific establishments as they’re often underwhelming. Our go-to for steak is gaucho in Manchester but this rivals it and I’d go as far as saying it’s the best steak I’ve had in a very long time! I applaud the chefs for this. Side note: we’re not usually a fan of a sauce with steak but my other half was particularly taken with the peppercorn sauce that came with it. The sticky toffee pudding could stand toe-to-toe with Cartmel’s- the home of sticky toffee pudding. The second night, my other half had scallops, pork and banoffee pie, which were exquisite and I enjoyed the chicken supreme with a zesty refreshing strawberry based dessert; all washed down with a velvety primitivo and the night was nicely rounded off with the tiramisu espresso martini. Thank you to everyone at the Alice, we had such a lovely time visiting you. It was worth every penny and I’m already eyeing up coming to stay in one of the rooms at the back (they look like something from grand designs)! We booked for both evenings and it was busy (the races were on) so I would recommend doing so to avoid disappointment.

After reading so many good reviews, I expected to have an excellent birthday meal here and was left very disappointed. The service set the tone for an unpleasant evening when our server came to take our order ages after we'd sat down and without a smile. When I asked if I could swap the side dish that came with my main course our server said yes while rolling his eyes and saying "you'll have to pay extra". I got a steak and it was medium done instead of medium-rare. It was so chewy I had to cut it into tiny pieces and eat it like a bird. None of the dishes we tried were anything exceptional, I've eaten better in normal little pubs. The only positive was the lovely room we stayed in and I would come back for a stay but eat elsewhere.

To be fair we were the only vegans in the party but even for the meat eaters, unless they were having fish and chips, the cooks made sure you had plenty of plate surface to look at. What a revelation, a super pub/restaurant a short drive from where I live, in a village I have never visited before. Nun Monkton is at the end of a long side road off the main A59 Harrogate to York road. Previously I had only ventured as far as the vineyard (also worth a visit) but then as far again and the road emerges into the prettiest of villages with open greens and several duck ponds. The Alice Hawthorn (named for a famous racehorse I was told) is a lovely old building on the green, with a large car park at the back. Also at the back is a group of new, architecturally interesting buildings, which seem to comprise bedrooms and private dining rooms. The main pub is very well presented inside, with a strong contemporary feel inside a much older structure. We arrived for a 1.30 lunch and the place was already pretty busy. The first thing that struck me was how warm and cosy it was on this very cold and frosty day. The service was attentive without being oppressive, and the food was absolutely superb. We had not intended to have three courses at lunchtime, but suffice it to say, we were tempted to do so by the excellent menu. It is reasonably expensive. It worked out at just over £75 a head for three courses and (light) drinks. It was however it beautifully presented, inventively prepared, and delivered in generous portion sizes. I was hooked from my first course which was the tuna…how do you describe a taste explosion. I am sure wherever you look on the menu there will be something to excite. It might take you a while to choose…then you’ll have to go back again to try something else. We definitely will.

We were looking for somewhere to eat on our way to York and ended up finding ourselves here. The place is very picturesque from the outside, the lights on the buildings really look the part. It's a massive venue, much bigger than we expected from our first impression. Once inside we made our way to the bar and asked if it was possible to get some food, the bartender showed us the specials menu on a blackboard above the fireplace and said there was a table 'through there' we could have. We ordered drinks and set about going to the table when a customer suggested we stay in the bar area as it was going to be cold where the server had suggested. We redirected ourselves to a table that had just been vacated, got sat down and were moved within minutes to the proper restaurant area as where we were sat had been booked for half seven. There was a sign indicating this though we hadn't planned on being there that long anyway. Once seated we were asked if we wanted some water for the table to which we replied yes, the water however never arrived. I wouldn't say the menu was overly big but it was very high end in terms of price, we settled for a few sides and couldn't complain about the quality of the food but would think for the pricing the service would have been slightly better than it was.

It was a difficult night for the team at the Alice Hawthorn as the electricity supply to the village was down affecting the kitchen and some of rooms. Our room wasn't affected except for lack of Internet. The team produced a short menu that could be cooked on the fancy Japanese bbq and/ or cold items. Food was very good and more so given the circumstances. The staff were excellent, upbeat and charming. Would definitely return to experience the full menu.

Lovely peaceful setting in an idyllic village near York. The Alice Hawthorn certainly delivers on style, ambiance and delicious food coupled with excellent service. I had the lamb which was superbly tasty and well presented. We were rather full from our main courses so decided to have a trio of puddings between the three of us. It was a good choice as it gave us each a mouthful of three different puddings without being too much. Would highly recommend and would love to come and stay next time

We stayed here for the night while travelling back to Aberdeen from Norfolk. The location is excellent as it is around 10 minutes from the A1. As you enter the village it is like stepping back in time - A beautiful country village that harks back to calmer, quieter times. The pub itself is really nicely appointed, and the rooms are wonderful. Most are located in separate buildings just behind the main pub. They are Scandinavian style lodges, with all mod cons and plenty of space. They have a very new feel to them, which is in direct contrast to the olde worlde feel of the pub. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and serves up excellent food.

This is my mother’s favourite place to eat because it’s so consistently brilliant. Punchy flavours cooked to perfection. The staff are attentive but not overbearing and kind enough to squeeze us in last minute too.

We have eaten here a few times but it was our first Dinner B&B experience of Alice… A lovely welcome from the charming, assured and highly professional, Nicole! “Pub” room was a great size with a splendid bathroom. Nice touches which not everywhere does anymore…bubble bath is you wish to soak, water, milk and freshly baked biscuits. A light on a sensor in the bathroom so you don’t have to search for a switch during the night. Dinner was very tasty with a good choice of different meats and fish…vegetarian and vegan choices? No idea. Who cares. A very good nights sleep followed. Breakfast was a veritable feast with many choices and all the while being looked after by the attentive Nicole who seemed to appear just as you needed something. Bravo! It’s not cheap, but nothing is anymore, and we think if you compare it to other places aiming at similar people, it’s up there. Well worth a visit. Thank you.

We had a lovely 3 night stay at The Alice, a gorgeous Inn with divine food, however their housekeeping is not the best. Our sink in the shower room was not cleaned during our stay leaving tide marks and toothpaste splashes and we couldn't get the heating on, the towel rail was therefore cold and it was quite cold in the bedroom in the evening. Would we stay again I'm not sure given the fact it's quite pricey we would have expected better.

We have not long returned from a three night stay at The Alice Hawthorn and had a wonderful time, gorgeous Inn and divine food. We stayed in The Cosy room above the pub which was absolutely fine for a short stay. However we were not impressed with the housekeeping, our basin in the shower room was never cleaned while we were there leaving tide marks and toothpaste splashes, really not good. Also we were unable to turn on the heating consequently the towel rail never hot to dry towels and coming to the end of September it was actually quite cold in the evening in the room. A beautiful inn with outstanding food but would we return, I'm not sure, it's pricey and would have expected better.

Beautifully converted barn with modern European Cuisine and warm service. Food is locally sourced, seasonal and very fresh. Great steak selection and vast seafood options, too. Indoor as well as outdoor seating available with some BBQ events in the summer. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Thumbs up will return 👍

Booked for luncheon and arrived a little early so sat in the bar but was soon shown through to our table. Ordered a couple of drinks whilst trying to decide what to eat. The choice is limited but great choice of dishes. Starters were just lovely with prawns and goat cheese followed by fillet steak and venison. Ordered fine green beans as a side with the venison and oh my goodness, if I could have them daily, I would. Plates were very soon emptied with comments like Mmmmm and ohhhhh yes for the fillet. Venison was served pink and if you haven't tried it that way, Please do. Desserts again all looked amazing but we eventually went with the cheese board to share and an alfagoto each, served with a shot of liqueur. Every single mouthful was truly delightful. The staff were attentive and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would imagine the venue to be one for social occasions as our meal ( 3 courses each plus 1 pint and a couple of gins) came in at just under £170.00. We certainly couldn't afford to eat here weekly but a once a month treat would most definitely be on the cards. So, why 4 star and not 5? Yes, the food was very good as was the service but there is always room for improvement. We shall look forward to our next trip to see if the 5 stars can be given.

Great place to eat just outside York. Lovely decor and setting with great service and food to match. Surprised that my lamb didn’t come with any form of potato hence the four rather than five stars, as all the rest of our party’s dishes did.

What an amazing find in a beautiful village! We stayed in ‘Hay’ overnight and had a wonderful stay. The room was on the first floor with plenty of light and ventilation. The bathroom was large and a fabulous bath! The room was decorated tastefully, little touches of bottled water and fresh milk in the fridge was great. The night light in the bathroom was very useful. The bed was super comfy, the pillows were gorgeous so much so we have ordered some! The only thing missing was a bath robe which would have been useful. We had a fabulous meal in the restaurant, it was a 10/10 for quality and service. We had 3 attempts at choosing a bottle of red wine, this was unfortunate but the pubs wine supplier had not arrived that day with their order. The whole pub has a lovely relaxing feel to it and we will definitely return.

Absolutely superb staff, we could not have been made to feel more welcome from the minute we arrived. The rooms were clean and tidy, we stayed on the lodge house away from the main hotel and it was lovely. Food was great and the breakfast was yummy 😋
