Grand Junction licensed cafe in Brighton and Hove

Food served on plastic plates. Expensive. Argued with owner that tempura is a batter not breadcrumbs, said I would change for something else which was a £1.00 more expensive and she made the young girl go get the card machine before I could reorder! Dreadful customer service and food very poor

My sister and I went to Brighton today and decided to have lunch at the Grand Junction on the seafront like we have many times before. It must have changed hands however as the menu was essentially just burgers with one cod and chips on offer. The prices have doubled compared to previous times we’ve been. The burger I had wasn’t great and was very fatty so I left that and just ate the fried egg and chips. The meal cost me £17.00 including a glass of water and was very overpriced for what it was. The owner insisted the payment hadn’t gone through for the meal and wanted to charge me again so I had to go online to my bank account to prove the payment had gone through. As we walked back into the shops after lunch we passed many restaurants offering 2 courses for £12.00 and the food looked lovely so we’ll go somewhere else next time.

I was told that I could not have a small fish & chips and that only the large was available if I wanted it. I changed my meal to tempura as I did not want a large meal. One drink was missing, another was wrong then to add insult to injury, I was told that the meal I had just been sold was also not available. The waitress was totally unapologetic and just shouted 'in this weather it just depends what is delivered on the day'. Did she not know what had been delivered that morning before trying to sell it? This place is such a shambles. People standing around not knowing what to do. Lots of selling up and selling of non-existent dishes. Not Covid safe; people turning up after us simply had two coats removed from the backs of chairs and they were seated with no wiping down. Overall, just a panicky, money-making, unsafe environment. We demanded our money back and found somewhere else to eat. We would not revisit for a free meal. Where are all the positive reviews coming from? Do not touch with a bargepole!

We ordered the chicken pieces & chips & Chicken burger on it's own. The amount of chips on the meal was an insult and I would expect for a child's meal, served on a tiny plate to try & me it look bigger I presume... The chicken burger was ok but pricey to not include chips. When asked if our meal was OK, I told her we were unhappy re the size of the chicken meal and that it was more like a childs meal, the lady then asked if we would like to purchase an extra portion of chips for £3.4 5 I declined as would never expect to pay that much for such a tiny portion. She then just walked off to cook herself some lunch. The place was empty and smelled really strongly of dirty cooking oil. Further along is a really lovely chippy which I wish we had gone to as their sizes are what a chip shop should be. Definitely recommend walking on by!!

We was in Brighton and fancied some fish and chips, we stumbled across this place, the menu looked good, the place looked clean, it offered outside seating on the beach which was a bonus, the fish and chips were very nice, the fish was a snowy white in colour and the batter was nice golden and crispy, you could also see it being cooked which I always find a bonus, the staff were very polite and friendly, we also noticed that as soon as other customers had finished their food and left the staff were out sanitising the table and chairs, I would recommend this place and I would visit again when in Brighton.

Had lovely food here and very reasonably priced. Staff were very nice too. Right on the sea front so great view whilst dining.

Stopped here with the family on a lovely sunny day in Brighton. Had the fish burger (which actually is a lovely piece of fresh fish) in a nice bun with chips. Nice draught lager / house wine, staff very efficient and friendly. Great location, great fish burger we will be back ! The

Yuk, £7.95 for a big breakfast that was small. The sausages had a unusual flavor, not taste of meat at all. Hash brown was frozen, everything was tasteless, best thing I had was a cuppa tea, now I am walking around feeling nauseated, it may have 5 star hygiene rating but have to say worst breakfast I have had in my life. If you can't cook a hash brown, you can't cook.

Nice staff on the positive. Nice peas too Over priced portion of rubbery cold chips served in a small plastic bowl £3 that i thought was cat food going by the look of it and the size of the portion you just wouldn’t serve. The fish was old too sadly and even the 6cm pickled onion with an old pickle sliced up Though nice the service was quite poor and it was uneasy seeing staff and their children scoffing behind the counter. It’s off putting especially when you’re waiting for service that doesn’t come. That’s not to mention the way the place looked but I want to just forget about it and never visit again. It’s busy as it’s at the bottom of the steps. Don’t make yourself sick by going there

Good food, good staff and a great place to sit outside and eat fish and chips. Price wasn’t too bad either.

1 couple ordered fish n chips said they were ok. We ordered egg, sausage n chips. Sausages had a funny taste. They insisted they were ok. They took sausages off the bill. But overall not impressed,we'll not go in again. Staff didn't seem very bothered

How can i be polite...it was rank!!! The strangest experience i have ever had, as we were deciding on what to have the guy taking the order stood over us huffing and puffing, there was no one else there so he wasnt rushed. The sausage was very odd indeed, very sweet tasting with no meat flavour..im sure its been no where near a pig. My advice leave this place alone. Its best closed!!!

We were hassled twice by one waitress for money for the bill whilst we were eating and were told ‘my boss is getting angry about you not paying’ after we weren’t told to pay upfront, and then after I’ve already paid, been asked by one of the men who work here if we’ve already paid. The hot dog was anaemic and we got served our meals in kids plastic bowls. Will not be coming here again.

Just walked down to find somewhere to get tea and sat on the outside tables, we had just bought chips from an other place and thought it okay to sit as we were going to buy from them . A lady came out and told us that we couldn't eat outside food and when we said we were going to buy from their cafe she told us that the shop was closing. At 4pm. Unlikely. She blatantly lied to us instead of explaining that no sort of external food was allowed. Unjustifiable to lie to potential customers just to get rid of them.

Me and my family came here last weekend and we were horrified. Firstly when we entered all the staff stood there at the door and stared at us. We then sat at a table and they gave us menus. We ordered drinks and we all had coke. The cups were plastic (not very good) I asked for a Diet Coke and had it thrown basically on the table. We then ordered all had fish an chips. It tasted nice until I put my fork in the fish an a bloody worm come out. It was dead but straight away put me off my food. Also I turned around and they were washing plastic plates up in a sink with dirty water. Everything about this place wasn’t good it got worse as we sat there. I wouldn’t return I’m sure there is plenty of other fish an chip places which are much better then here. Awful. Don’t recommend!!

Pasar un sábado soleado en Brighton y mientras caminaba por la playa se encontró con este pequeño lugar. Estaba muy ocupado pero nos las arreglamos para conseguir una mesa fuera en el sol, el servicio era muy bueno, tuvimos un par de cervezas y bacalao y patatas fritas. El bateador era súper crujiente y el pescado encantador y fresco, definitivamente volvería a ir aquí de nuevo, fue un gran comienzo para nuestro fin de semana.

Decidí tomar el autobús de Horsham a Brighton, ya que era un hermoso día soleado de marzo. Buscando algo para comer a la hora del almuerzo, encontré este restaurante justo al lado del muelle en la playa.

For a restaurant that advertises "gourmet" food, it could not be further from the truth. Menus grubby, toilets grubby, grubby hand towel in the toilets and that's before I've even got to the food. For a Saturday lunchtime, they had no mushy peas left, the only sparkling water option was a £1.40 plastic cup of soda water. The fish and chips were terrible - overcooked, dry and the chips were cheap oven chips. I'm amazed this restaurant has so many good reviews, I can honestly say it's the most disappointing lunch we've ever had.

No esperes que te cautiven con accesorios elegantes, sino que tiene una sensación de cafetería tradicional con un guiño a sus mods y ubicación de rockeros. Servicio amable y eficiente. Nuestra camarera fue oportuna y cortés. Los niños tenían chips de huevo y frijoles (caliente y fresco) y teníamos buen pescado viejo y papas fritas. El batido era liviano y crujiente (no soporto el bateador espeso y grueso) y las papas son deliciosas. Una pieza de bacalao de tamaño decente que era jugosa y suave. Precio razonable y excelente ubicación para ver el muelle y el mar.

Lovely location on the beach, close to Palace Pier. We thought no trip to Brighton without having fish and chips at least once. Restaurant is also boasting about their fish being caught the same day.

We stopped here for a lunch no burgers left at 3pm on a Saturday!! Requested a poughmans instead that wasn't available a it's not summer! So my wife and I had cheese and ham toastie burnt toast!! You have been warned!!

After visiting Brighton Pier, we stopped at The Grand Junction for Fish and Chips. It was extremely tasty and the service was very good. On a hot summer day you are also right on the beachfront which would be very pleasant.

We went here during inclement weather and the place was empty. So we had all the staff to ourselves. Had a small English all day breakfast Everything good ,been here in the summer and it was packed . Nice staff.

Having queued at a restaurant just along from this one for twenty minutes only to be told they had run out of food, this was the next eatery along the front. We received a nice welcome from the waitress and ordered. A large fresh cod and plate of chips £6.95. Bargain, in my book. The lunch was well cooked and was served within 10 minutes. If there is a better bargain than this along the seafront in Brighton, I would be amazed. Really pleased that the original choice ran out of food.

He estado en este café un par de veces, pero esta vez fue mi primera por más de un año. Ha mejorado mucho desde mi última visita, que era un 3 estrellas (un poco duro mirar atrás). La comida era estupenda, una ubicación fantástica y un personal muy acogedor. Ganas de volver :).

Probably the worst breakfast we've ever had!! Cold beans, burnt toast, awful sausage and cold, watery cappucino. We definitely will NOT be going back there ever again. I cannot believe anyone has ever enjoyed eating food here.

Normalmente nos dan el pescado y patatas fritas de la cabina en la parte delantera del muelle y sentarse en la playa. Sin embargo, fue un día muy caliente, la playa estaba llena y cuando pasamos vimos algunas mesas vacías por lo que elegimos para comer aquí. Los precios eran casi la misma que en el muelle, y tendrá la ventaja de estar en un buen asiento en una mesa de metal y tienen un cuchillo y tenedor de madera, en vez de una muy pequeña que obtiene con una comida para llevar.

Me resulta difícil creer que personas han dado 5 estrellas a este lugar. Nos recibió un camarero muy amable conversador y me dijeron que tome una mesa. Él era el mejor del lugar. El pescado estaba tan grasienta que era incomible y era sólo ligeramente mejor después de haber eliminado el bateador. Mis hijas burger también estaba nadando en grasa y las patatas fritas no tenía sabor. Dejamos la mayoría de ellos. Sábado y esperamos una eternidad para la cuenta que nunca llegó, así que al final tuve que ir a la factura. Parecía inclinado a la bienvenida, pero una vez allí totalmente desinteresados. Evitar.

Absolutely shocking. tasteless and flavourless. The £7 was what grabbed us but pay more else where :) We have 3/4 of our meals to the fat seagulls. They possibly get fed by all the customers.

Una encantadora visita a la Grand Junction frente al mar en Brighton. El servicio de propietario Kevin y el resto del equipo era muy acogedor, amable y eficiente. La comida era ejemplar, pescado muy fresco, entregado rápidamente y preparado para nosotros en el mismo lugar (a la orden). Estamos muy contentos de haber decidido pasar peces competidor y tiendas chip! Definitivamente volveré de nuevo y la comida tradicional fue lo más destacado de nuestro viaje de un día a Brighton. Realmente era la 'solla para comer", como prometió!

Can't fault this cafe, staff were really friendly. The huge cods didn't go unnoticed, not only huge but tasty.If your visiting Brighton! You must visit grand junction.

Me and my daughter had fish and chips on Sunday 2 April 2017 and they were fantastic we didn't even leave any scraps for the seagulls, service was impeccable so friendly and polite. Highly recommended 5*

Hoy llegamos en frío y tenía un Brighton deseas para pescado y patatas fritas! Caminando a lo largo de la PROM que encontramos este lugar. Éramos un grupo de 5, incluyendo dos niños. Se anuncia el bacalao y patatas fritas a £6. 95. Sin duda este no será tan buena. Bueno, para ser honestos, el mejor pescado que he tenido en mucho tiempo. Fresco y caliente! ! La comida de los niños era sencillo pero bueno la válvula y les encantó. Gran servicio de un hermoso joven y un par de caos amable. Nada era demasiado problema. Gran trabajo chicos todos volver

Came here last weekend & me & my 4 girlfriends stopped in for a late lunch & ended up staying for the afternoon. I have the scampi and it was just delicious. The staff were friendly & service was quick. Will definitely be back for next year. Thanks very much

Find it hard to believe some people found this place nice, probably the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Half the things they didn't have on the menu, the chips were rock hard and horrible and the fish certainly wasn't fresh avoid like the plague!!

Visited yesterday fantastic food , great location , awesome time had by all lovely time burgers are fantastic yum my friend had the line caught cod she eat every bit followed by a beer well full up staff very funny especially the owner will go again he promisid discount on second visit going back in June with more friends that's how good it was good to no a good place to eat on Brighton seafront

I've been to this cafe a few times over the years living in Brighton. Went in today and the place has been revamped and looks amazing! It's gave a new lease of life! The fish and chips was amazing and really reasonably price for a seafront cafe! Nice friendly English speaking staff. Really nice place to sit and watch the work go by! Highly recommended

Stop here to have breakfast one morning while in Brighton. Lovely breakfast, great view, and good value, will visit again when in Brighton.

Inside and outside tables, the outside seating is almost on the beach, lovely views of pier and beach. Staff very friendly and very busy. Fish tasted fresh, the portions were large and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. There were sea gulls looking for food as usual and we did see one swoop and grab a chip from a plate while people were still sitting at the table so be aware

very greasy food - smelled of old oil which was pretty disgusting. Chips were quite thin- not traditional ones. Plus they didnt even have beer to go with it. Would not recommend it if you looking for decent fish and chips in Brighton

We ate here last week on a day trip to Brighton. There is a similar one a little further down which we had our fish and chips at before and was very nice. To me fish and chips at the beach should be like a take away, this is made to order - which I wouldn't complain about, but with 2 young kids had I known that we probably wouldn't have eaten at!I had the fish and chips and I found the whole thing very greasy and whilst my mother in law enjoyed it, I wasn't overwhelmed with the food as you should be with fish and chips at the seaside! Another point - whilst they are not alone I was not too happy with the options for kids drinks and when mine had apple juice (which they love!) This cost more than the adult drinks.We sat outside, but inside smelt because of all the grease being cooked.I feel a little harsh giving 2, I did toy with giving 3 as it wasn't by any means horrific, but there were too few positives to raise my opinion.

Staff couldn't care less about their customers and served us as if we were interrupting them. We were waiting forever to finally catch their attention and when the food arrived it was a complete disappointment. Bland and basic. The inside looked like it has never been cleaned and the kitchen staff were utterly unprofessional. I will never come back and that's just to say the least. What a disappointment!

This little Café is on the beach at Brighton.Just stopped for a Coffee and a hot Chocolate the weather being horrible.Although busy service was quite good Attractive waitresses ,took my mind off the weather.

One of the closest coffee shops along the prom to the peer that serves coffee in cups. My black Americano was fine as was my wife's black tea and good to see they had 5 stars for food hygiene. The staff kindly brought a bowl of water for our dog without being asked and rounded our bill down because they were short of change. My wife thought the loos were clean too. No complaints from us

Had the standard fish and chips. It was hot, promptly served but very little taste. Efficient friendly staff and a great location.

The cod was very good but the chips were lukewarm my companions plaice a little disappointing. The tea with the meal was very good. Under the arches on the sea-front it has the seaside cafe atmosphere.

I would suggest looking at the kitchen and staff before sitting down and ordering! App or show!! Absolute no cleanliness or hygiene, staff don't know if they are coming or going? We had the dis fortune of eating here with friends, and quite frankly.... Completely embarrassed! Plastic plates, plastic glasses all of which are filthy.... Grubby containers of pre cooked chips on the side.... Fish defrosting in a bucket of tap water in sight and a hot plate that is completely covered in grime and rust?

Visited this establishment this lunch time, because of its prime location near Brighton pier. I had chips and a nice cold Harvey's and was reasonably priced for a Brighton cafe. The staff members were bantering with themselves too and felt a little Fawlty Towers, but can't knock the food or price!

I suppose when you are not relying on repeat business you don't have to have very high standards. Cheap and nasty seats, plastic menus falling to bits with pages stuck together, small portions and a very rude cook shouting at the waiter. Kitchen staff not even in overalls. Nice chips, everything else very poor indeed.

Visited this cafe on seafront, really busy but looked ok. Once in and had a look round, we didn't feel like we could just leave, it looked grubby and the staff were not in the slightest bit interested in offering any level of customer service. Ordered fish and chips - ok - but nothing to write home about, chips were not good ! Really overpriced. The worst thing was the grey haired man (we guessed to be the owner), he was shouting, language was foul, staff looked like "bunnies in the headlights" not entertaining at all - and we were hoping the kids didn't repeat what they heard !! All in all - don't be tempted, you will be out of pocket and the floor show is Fawlty Towers meets Roy Chubby Brown !

Went with friends for a bite to eat for lunch. Outside looks decent but inside is dirty and loud. They have a strange service set up with one bloke running around like a headless chicken. Man swearing behind the bar at his employees who all seem to be rather confused with the wholeSetup.Fish was soggy and chips were of poor quality. 26:50 for 3 meals and some drink. Altogether avoid not a pleasant experience I would rather do a skydive without a parachute .

We live locally, but had never been in this Fish and Chip restaurant before. The outside doesn't look too bad, which drew us in. Turned out to be a bit of a mistake! We chose to sit inside as it was a cold day. It's difficult to describe the staff, but 'professional' is not a word we would use. The interior is unusual, resembling a scruffy builders caff: Un-matched furniture, radio playing behind counter too loudly, uneven tables, with sticky plastic table cloths, small straight backed chairs, old dark varnished wood and poor decor abound. Near where we sat, was an empty chiller cabinet with a full size beach canoe perched on it and plastic display of flowers which they obviously place outside normally. WHY? We were handed the menu's and each chose Fish and Chips with a tea/coffee. The prices were expensive compared to the many similar establishments in the South Coast region.The meal was hot and the Fish not bad, but as a Fish and Chip restaurant they need to pay more attention to the quality of batter. I suspect the chips had been bought in frozen, even though they were deep fried. Meal was further let down because it was served up on cheap plastic multi-coloured plates and peculiarly thin knives and forks.Overall this restaurant deserved better. It is in a prime position near the Pier and I worry that overseas visitors attracted by the English love of Fish and Chips will wonder what all the fuss is about. This is a prime example of the 'Worst of British'. We will never go there again.

I went there with my Mom and baby for a coffee at 3.30pm on a beautiful Wednesday. While I started feeding my baby my Mom headed to the bar to order. An employee threw me out while I was feeding my baby saying they were closing the place and he needed to tidy the chair. There were other chairs but he refused for me to finish. He came back after a few minutes pushing a massive bin and hit the pram and a disabled customer with it! Horrible people. Should change job and not be in contact with the public. The bar two doors down was super friendly !

We went in to look at menu first thing that was said we don't do take away. Ok just looking at the menu.He said just sit down and we will take order!!!! Should have left at that point.Smallest cups used for coffee! I asked for a portion of chips and what I got was a plastic bowl of chips worth 80p oh no £1.50 I cud have had a decent size portion from a chippy.No happy people running it. Service was pants. Waste of money the portions were tiny!!!!

We came across this cafe and noted the sign saying line caught fish. This was a fish and chip cafe.The service we received was excellent and they were very friendly.We sat outside in the sun which was lovely. Our drinks were brought out, followed shortly by the fish and chips. I thought the fish was lovely, but the chips what a disappointment. They appeared to be reheated and had a really strange flavour. You know when you buy seaside doughnuts and they have that sweet oily taste, well that's what the chips tasted of!!! They were oven chips not fresh at all. We used the toilets and passed the fryer with huge plastic containers of the chips, which looked precooked as they had colour on them!!!We used the toilets but ended up using the men's as the others seemed occupied. Very small area and worryingly no running water!!!! I was very disappointed in the cafe, and I wish I had read the reviews before we stopped here. They certainly didn't agree with me!!!!!!!!!!

I was looking forward to sampling Brighton's legendary fish and chips. Unfortunately, this cafe didn't live up to the billing. The service was good, the cuppa was nice and I enjoyed the seaside atmosphere. However, the fish and chips were a bit disappointing. The chips were lukewarm and appeared to be more like oven chips than the traditional chip shop variety. I'm sure there are better places for fish and chips in Brighton, so probably wouldn't come back to this one.

Well this was different, in a strange but good way. Greeted by "are you eating or drinking". As eating we were given a menu and soon decided that fish and chips was the order of the day, with mug of tea and cans of coke. Tea arrived promptly and was indeed most welcome on a freezing cold December day. While waiting for the food, mien host came over to ask from where we where from. He seems well travelled as every one who came in was asked the same question to which the reply was he knew it well. The food turn up and was eagerly eaten, and it was very hot fresh and tasty. Half a through we were again asked from where we came and am not sure if he was aware he had already asked this question. Would I go again? Yes. And that's the best a cafe can ask for a yes for would you go again. Value very good and worthwhile

Been here before and happy to return. Cod and chips and salmon fish cake and chips both very good and great value too.

...and we'd probably still be waiting if we hadn't given up after an hour of being ignored and moved on. I can't comment on the food as it never arrived. Neither did a menu. On the plus side, we got to sit in the sunshine on Brighton beach for an hour without having to hire a deckchair.

How can you call yourself a fish and chip shop , advertising "line caught cod " and then serve it with oven cooked chips !! Poor show I say ! Very poor ! Otherwise it was okay , cod was very good , good mushy peas , but but but , fake chips ! Must do better !
