Over the years like much of East London - brick Lane has been transformed into a hip - arty neighbourhood where Asian food courts and Street food have crowded out the old hole in the wall Bangladeshi eateries. Gram Bangla remains a gem - tucked at the deep end, a no frills outlet for those looking for authentic, home style Bangla cuisine. Undoubtedly- the high point is the medley of “Bhortas”.

The food is about average. Some dishes are good, but most are average. The boal was quite bland. The keski bortha is disgusting, it had (aquatic) insects in it that are caught alongside the fish and frozen into blocks. When it's defrosted, you're meant to clean the fish and get rid of any bits of plants/insects. I found 3 insects in one portion of bortha, I discarded the rest. The portion sizes/prices are too high for locals, which is why the restaurant was full of yuppies who don't know the difference between good and bad Bangla food.

I have known this establishment for two decades -- sadly I seemed to know more about its history and presence in the neighbourhood than the current staff do. What has changed in the last decade is that the interior is more swish (and sterile?) and even has a massive artwork by a female artist. The restaurant manager is female -- this was not a place where a lot of females would walk in alone to eat but now it is. The staff are friendly and hospitable but not in a personalized way -- I miss that. The food choices were great, I particularly appreciated all the vegetarian choices -- mostly in the form of "bhorta". It is far more expensive than I remembered it (last visit in 2018) and it seems to have a new USP -- swish, generic restaurant-type ambience for all to sample real Bangla/Sylheti food. BUT it has lost its unique neighbourhood-gathering-place kind of feel. That's my nostalgia talking.

Graam Bangla is super cozy, feels and tastes just like home. The giant mural is gorgeous! There's a display of the food items towards the back of the store. This was a great way to get an idea of what the different curries look like - how much jhol etc. All the service people were super friendly and accommodating! The food itself was unmatched! I haven't eaten food this good outside of my own home in a LONG time. Not all of the bhartas are vegetarian (some are fish). I simply asked for a bharta platter with only veggies. The bhartas with daal and bhat really hit the spot. Some of the bhartas are fairly spicy, but that's just how I like it. It was a really good variety and they all tasted amazing. I also had the greens and aloo and they both tasted just like home. It was a flavor bomb! I'm coming back when I'm back in London, no doubt.

There are many "me-too's" in Brick Lane now, touting authentic Bangla cusine -- some might be even better than GB but I like to be loyal to the establishment that started the tradition of real Bangla food in this neighbourhood.Today's dinner was fabulous once again -- three choices of fish that only people with a Bangla heritage would recognize. A very prompt and caring server made considered recommendations. We ate well and also got 4 items for take away -- at 32 pounds! (None of what we ate was cheap, mass-packaged stuff -- the fish was imported and all the sauces freshly made.)

I "discovered" Gram Bangla on a visit to London almost a decade ago. At that time it seemed to be the only establishment of its kind catering to the Bangladeshi population in the neighbourhood. I went back several times, told my friends in the UK and even in the USA about it -- and many visited the place and enjoyed the cuisine.Having not visited Brick Lane for at least 4 years I was wondering whether I would even find Gram Bangla and whether the food would live up to my memories of it. When I visited today I realized that there are several other establishments on the street that now purvey the "authentic" the way Gram Bangla once did. Gram Bangla's offerings have become more mainstream -- less variety and fewer offerings of obscure dishes known only to people of the region. When I had first visited the servers spoke only Bangla, and a certain dialect of Bangla. Today, our server spoke English -- a flawless version of the East End idiom. So it was not what it had once been but the tastes were still authentic -- we had two types of fish (carp and "boal"), spinach with prawns, a lovely daal and spicy chickpeas accompanied by two orders of rice -- all that food (plus dessert to take away) for under 30 pounds! For the adventurous eater and someone exposed to more than the average "Indian curry" this is a treat not to be missed while in London.

This was recommended by Rick Steeve's travel guide. Rick rarely disappoints but this place was a real letdown. Service not great and food not great either. Chicken mosalla was dry and sauce boring. A good Indian sauce should be complex and wonderful. Samosas were tiny. The one good thing was the chutney was delicious. Even though every other restaurant in London that we visited willingly gave us free tap water, the server here claimed that they did not have tap water. Really? What are they using back in the kitchen? You can bet that they are not using bottled water for all of their cooking. So your choice is to go thirsty or pay for bottled water, $3.75. This ploy is obviously just an effort to increase their revenue stream. Maybe they don't realize that water should be a human right, not just for those that pay. I am 67, took my niece on a trip to London, my treat, she is 34. The server here did not make eye contact with me, only my niece. Then when he brought the check, he didn't put it in the middle or give it to me, he gave it to my niece as if I were some elderly dependent and there was no doubt that she would be paying. Very odd. Or ageist?

I must say that unfortunately the reviews do not reflect our experience in this restaurant. We entered enticed by the boy outside the restaurant who was telling the reviews of the restaurant, but unfortunately we didn't find the true Indian flavor we were expecting in the dishes, furthermore, given the late hour, the service was very fast and hasty. We probably chose the wrong night. Positive note: the clash promised outside was applied to the final bill!
