I bought cod and chips from the Gordon chippy and ate them from a box, on a bench in the grassy area opposite the little shop. Had to wait, so they were piping hot. I really enjoyed them. At first, I thought the chips looked grotty--but it was only because they were browned. But chips don't have to be golden, and they had fresh white potato inside and lots of flavour. The cod was decent, with plenty of white flesh, in a rich batter. Friendly lady served me, old enough to remember how fish and chips should be.

Gordon's Chippy - more Gordon Bennet than Gordon Ramsey. The first thing you notice is the advert in the window for an experienced fryer. By God they need one. The chips were inedible, cold and overcooked. Curry sauce and gravy like water and a bread roll even the pigeons weren't sure of. Service was slow despite nobody else being there. Sorry - worst I've ever tried to eat.

DON’T BOTHER GOING HERE! AVOID!!!! I’d give a zero if I could I’m a local resident I’ve visited here before and it’s been average. Came here during Dickens Festival and had the worst experience. Talk about trying to rip people off. The already over priced menu had been covered over with a Dickens Festival menu and a massive mark up. An extra 90p on the already over priced sausage. Cod bites looked like scraps of batter not cod and chips served in a small container as they refused to wrap

This is about the chippy which is part of the Gordon property but is separate from the steakhouse and hotel. Only had fried fish and a take away sausage for little one prices were rather high and no free extras on counter and haf to ask for salt and pepper and a fork. Declined ketchup sachets as wanted to charge 20 p or so each. However fish was freshly cooked and very Jimmy which redeemed the ace and little one ate all sausage without any ketchup

Utter crap, and need someone that can cook and count, also no steak on the menu, yet a steak house, got home and was sick had to be because they cook in old oil. Stay clear much better out their for £11.95 for scampi and chips, not even served with peas or something.

Went in this restaurant, with 4friends and my partner. Thinking it was a steak house, but no steak nothing apart from something chips. Very disgusting chips, scampi was okay but not the amount stated on menu. No condiments on table. What are as supposed to be a pukka pie was hardly warm, and didn’t taste like a pukka pie, some have had upset stomachs since eating in this place. Manager wouldn’t even come and talk to us. All in all we were all very dissatisfied and should not be called a steak house, if they don’t sell steak

Worst chips in Rochester in quality and value for money When they small portion they really mean very very very small. You should be ashamed, the tourists might put up with it, but locals who want to buy regular will go some where else. Sort it out Gordon regulars are your real bread and butter all year round.

Looking forward to a bank holiday take away but Gordon Chippy had other ideas ! no delivery so ok, got in car to collect, 50p admin fee, ok so far, collected food after a ten minute wait we ordered with Just Eat, dried up chicken nuggets minus 2, dried up scrapings of chips, x 2, smashed gravy pot in bottom of bag, missing Dr Pepper, I dont usually like to leave negative reviews but there was nothing edible we spent £29 for that money you expect a nice meal on a bank holiday, I have just spoke to someone in shop on phone, she suggested coming back in for some more food Unfortunately I have lost faith in them and will never go back

The chip shop is truly dreadful! When we got there, there was only one person working - she was right out the back cooking chips (as the layout of the shop is very strange). After about 2 - 3 minutes, she served someone else their chips - if they were any more pale, they could pass as snow! We ordered a sausage in batter, chips, a pie and two drinks - it took almost 10 minutes before this food came out - the chips were very pale so I tried one of the very small portion - they were crisp in the middle (not cooked) - the woman serving had little concept that they needed to be cooked through but begrudgingly, she took them away and put them back in the fryer. My friend put her finger in the pie (to see if it was hot) - it wasn't - we had to send that to be reheated - that took more than 5 minutes!! Then, we had to remind her that we had paid for two drinks - two diet cokes - she brought regular coke - we told her we had asked for diet - she replied 'we don't have diet coke' (though they had Pesi Max) Do yourself a favour - DON'T EAT HERE!

Thought we'd give this place a try for a roast dinner being as it is on our doorstep and we'd never eaten here before. We love Rochester and have always been curious about the food at this lovely old hotel, as there doesn't seem to be many reviews online. I feel I needed to contribute to get the ball rolling as the old ones I have read, haven't been all that good and felt they warranted an honest one! Firstly the positives: We were welcomed by a friendly young waitress who directed us to a nice seat by the window overlooking the cathedral ( thankfully it was quiet so we got to choose where to be seated). She proceeded to ask us for drinks but we didn't have a drinks list, she apologised and admitted it was her first day, well done for being honest! The food; 1st course - leek & potato soup which appeared to be home made - and garlic cream mushrooms, both very nice. 2nd course - the roast dinners were ok, my partner enjoyed his beef and I had the vegetarian option which was baked cod in parsley sauce. Both came with roast potatoes, carrots, peas, cauliflower cheese & Yorkshire pudding. 3rd course - chocolate gateaux with cream & spotted dick and custard. Both yummy. The dining room had lovely character and a nice atmosphere. Negatives: Roast potatoes were not oven ready Aunt Bessie's like a lot of places - they were fresh potatoes; however it was like they had been pre-cooked and put in the microwave to reheat, we know the difference! This was a real let down as this is the best part of a roast dinner, especially when you're a vegetarian! The cod was quite boney which made it difficult to enjoy. It would have been nice to have had another vegetarian option or even a vegan one on the menu, as fish wouldn't have necessarily been my first choice. 3 x large red wines were ordered throughout. The 1st was the measurement it should have been, the second two were measured as medium glasses however we were still charged for large. We felt to stay quiet when it came to the bill, due to the fact the staff were very nice and the three course dinner was a good price at £12.95. The positives we feel outweighed the negatives. Overall I think they deserved an all round 4* for ambience, friendly staff and good value.

We saw the sign steakhouse, & randomly thought we'd give it a go. The lady serving us was welcoming, polite, & smiley. Always a good thing. The room was amazing. The windows. The history in that room. Beautiful. We ordered a couple of burgers & a sea bass, & after 10 minutes, I decided I'd like some bread while we waited. I asked for a basket, & maybe some butter or oil. Another 15 minutes passed, & we were presented with 3 starters of bread & oil. It wasn't a problem, as we were happy to eat it anyway. I assumed it would fill in time, as I was quite hungry, so we wouldn't have to wait too long for our meals. We had a couple of drinks (I'd asked for a pint but was given a small glass, but again, I may have simply been misheard), & after a further half an hour; 45 minutes after ordering, I was wondering if they were butchering the cow. It was simply a burger, bun, some chips, & some salad. The fish was to be served with lyonnaise potatoes. None of that take that long when we were the only customers in the place. A further 10 minutes, so almost an hour after ordering, we were presented with our food. My Aberdeen Angus burger was dry, overcooked, & the salad was limp. My chips were clearly chip shop chips, which is fine, given that the place also own the chip shop next door, but this wasn't specified on the menu. My partner's gourmet burger was the same as mine. Cutting through it was near on impossible, especially with such blunt knives. The fish dish was equally surprising. The fish looked like it had been cooked, but then re-heated, whilst waiting for ours. The potatoes were clearly oven baked, but definitely not sautéed, as I'd expect Lyonnaise to be. Carrots & asparagus were given instead of the described roasted peppers, again, with no advanced warning. My partner's daughter probably wouldn't have minded, had they not been so soft & over cooked. We declined a dessert, & chose to pay the bill. The waitress was brilliant, though. Chatty, & welcoming. It must be hard to stand around all evening, & wait on one customer table at a time, yet she was not intrusive, & was there when we asked for something. We left just short of a 10% tip, but this was solely for the waitress, & her positivity, certainly not for the food, the quality, or the time it took to cook. On a lighter note, the toilets were clean!

This used to be a really good fish & chip takeaway, but not anymore. The fish is no longer battered as it should be, they now sell thin small pieces of cod which they've obviously bought in from a frozen food supplier. The chips were OK but don't expect edible fish.

When you enter the Gordon Hotel and Steak House Restaurant it is like entering the history of good old England. Just next to the entrance we entered the restaurant where a young lady welcomed us. As we asked why it was so quiet in there she answered she didn't know. 10 tables in an antique room and when you look out of the window you can see Rochester Cathedral. A lovely place.... but that music... Jazzy music was not our cup of tea. Steak House it clearly said outside... not a steak on the menu though. We ordered melon and mushrooms in cream sauce as starters. Whilst waiting we got a little basket with four lumbs of bread that had been reheated so it was dry and no butter offered. For Sunday lunch we had pork and lamb roast. Meat was nice but at first there was no apple sauce (after 10 min the waitress had found apple sauce after all) Vegetables were a mish mash of overcooked broccoli, cauliflower in white sauce, cabbage, garden peas and carrots. Three dry cooked roast potatoes were hard to cut into, a yorkshire pudding, no gravy there, just on the meat. All in all not too good and certainly not good enough for us to return. Maybe a new chef can get more customers to this restaurant with its wood panel paintings and pretty view. Oh and inform the waitress in advance that not all drinks are available from the drinks menu.Would not return......

We were drawn in by the carvery sign so the weary travellers entered. That was our first mistake. The roast beef was dry dark and tough. The veg were incipid and only distinguishable by sight. The potatoes and Yorkshire were OK.My husband never leaves a dessert unfinished but the sponge texture was like shortcrust pastry and on closer inspection found it was burnt on the sandwiched faces. I am still wondering how?On the plus the waitress noticed the desert was uneaten and offered to replace and then to remove from the bill.I feel the waiting staff are let down by the kitchen and the kitchen is probly let down by the general hotel management as the interior visible on the way to and including the WC is half done. Anyone who has read my reviews knows I am usually fair and positive but this visit has played on my mind so much I felt it had to be written.

As someone else has noticed here the menu in the window is different to the menu that is put on the table. The menu on the table was not as enticing as the one in the window but was substantially cheaper and the quality of the product was reflected in the price difference. I had the chicken curry, the sauce was watery and was decidedly mediocre, the salad it came with had seen better days, but the rice was ok. That said I hope the place improves, the dining room is small but there is plenty of room, it is in an old Georgian building and the interior is painted to resemble a mahogany panelled room with scenes painted in the panels. It is atmospheric, the paint finish is definitely old and with the right menu and the right staff providing the service it could be somewhere you would take someone for a memorable meal.

We were attracted by the varied menu displayed in the window. Inside, the restaurant, which is not very large, the walls are covered with what look to be old oil paintings done on wood panels. The waiter informed us that due to a difficulty of being in between chefs, the menu was not available but we could choose from the fish and chips menu. The main menu was to be served from the next day. Since we also fancied fish and chips, we stayed and ordered this. Nor were we disappointed. There was a very full plate and everything was superb and freshly cooked. So,made spite the initial setback, we thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Service was prompt and friendly.

It gets one star because It cannot be reviewed with fewer. Looking for a light lunch on a Sunday, called in without booking. Ordered drinks before the restaurant opened at noon. Barman was nice chap but clueless as to how to serve the 2 half pints of lager. At noon was shown into the restaurant and given a menu, it was a Sunday lunch menu which we didn't really want but we assumed that was the only offering so we both ordered a main course of roast beef. We were given some bread as we waited; it was a hot dog roll sliced. The meals came, the potatoes were hard and grey looking. I didn't taste them. The beef was of the poorest quality and seemed to be from the lowest end of frozen roast dinner options. Broccoli wast burnt, not charred but burnt. I thought the meal had been served with the worst kind of scrambled egg but my partner had clear signs of cauliflower so I think it was cauliflower cheese. We were never asked if we were enjoying our meal and when the waiter cleared our barely touched plates he still didn't feign the mildest interest. When we came to pay he asked if I wanted to add anything as a tip and then I said I felt more like taking something away as it was the worst meal I have ever even served. He apologised and said he would inform the chef; there can be nobody deserving of that title actually employed here.To add insult to injury, other diners were given the option of ordering from other menus but I cannot imagine the food would be any better but then again it cannot have been possible to have been worse. The final insulting injury was my partner's stomach upset that lasted two days and seems to have occurred with a very odd tasting lager. This is the sort of food that should close down eateries until they can honestly exchange simple, well-cooked fare for money paid from the guests. I didn't haggle over the bill because that is not my style and although it wasn't a lot of money what was spent was totally wasted as none of the meal was even passable. I have never had a meal that I couldn't find something positive to say but not so here. I wish that I had got up and left without even touching the food.

This isn't about the Gordon Hotel Restaurant as such but about the "Chippy" that forms part of it. Hope this doesn't confuse you but could not find anywhere else to write this. Initial impressions were good, everything looked very clean and professional. The lady who served us was chatty and polite. However the food left much to be desired and that is what we went for. I expected the fish and chips to reflect a high standard that one would expect from the Hotel Restaurant. The chips were re heated and tough and the fish was slimy in a wet , stodgy batter, it did not appear to be properly cooked through. Why are establishments reluctant to say that there will be a wait while the food is cooked? This would stop them having to pre cook and the warm up food with the consequential loss in food quality. I know this is supposed to be "fast food" but that does not mean it has to be given to you the moment you ask for it even if it is not yet ready. We will not go back to buy here again.

We popped in for a late dinner, attracted by the reasonably priced food on the menu. The restaurant was deserted, but all the tables were set very meticulously with crisp clean tablecloths, ornate cutlery and crystal glasses. A very friendly waitress welcomed us into a pleasantly warm wood-panelled room with a lot of character. The food was tasty, well-prepared, seasoned and presented, the portions were good. The crocodile steak was a first for us, surprisingly tender and lean, accompanied by a flavoursome Oriental salad and well-cooked fries. The same could be said for the mussels, scallops and white baits. The very dark chocolate torte was not overpowered by the usual sugar overdose that plagues many desserts. It had instead the distinctive flavour of good quality cocoa.

Sorry guys but I have to say this was the worst roast I've ever eaten. The beef tasted off (bad cut, microwaved, very odd flavour), the yorkshires were out of a packet and dry, the 'roast' potatoes were nothing of the sort (soggy, cool on outside but microwaved so they were so boiling hot in the middle my dad burnt his mouth and throat). The gravy was ok and the veg were ok too, but the whole thing wasn't tasted fake and worse than average. Plus I had a dirty napkin. On the plus, the service was good (our waiter v friendly/attentive), the building has lovely original painted walls and you look out over the high street so it's a good place to watch the world go by. But someone needs to give that menu some TLC ASAP!

The pate starter was acceptable but the pudding, a blackcurrant sponge, was dire and was the cheapest product on the market served with cheap ready made custard. We declined tea or coffee paid £48.35 excluding a £5.00 tip.Hardly value for money in my opinion, they would certainly be able to do much better. We came across the Gordon hotel amid restaurants and other hotels. We walked in the front door and thought we had stepped back in time, wow!! what a lovely place, no one to be found. Had we stepped onto a film set from the 1940's ?. Dimly lit entrance followed by a labyrinth of dark hall ways. With a musty aged odor in the air. We located a waiter in the bar he showed us to the dining room, which also had dimly lit walls with large old portraits to each side of the room, at that time, we were the only people there. We sat by one of 3 windows that gave us a view of the pedestrian precinct. The waiter gave us all a menu and put on some quite decent soft music. We all had a starter followed by steak with the normal trimmings, followed by dessert. At a first glance we would have walked out, but then the food arrived. They say "never judge a book by the cover", well in this instance it was just that. The food wow!! the last time I tasted a steak like that I was in Florida. The whole meal was wonderful and very hot, and came to £20 ph. As we were finishing an elderly couple came in shortly followed by other groups. If you are ever in the Rochester area please go into this hotel and have a meal. If you want a quiete meal then this is the place to go.

We had booked up before Christmas for a meal but had to cancel due to ill health. We went for our Christmas dinner in February, nothing was to much trouble, we had the original order, the food was delicious and lots of it right down to the Christmas table settings it was like having another Christmas. would definitely recommend this hotel for a meal

The roast wasn't bad, but the potatoes were Aunt Bessie's - nothing wrong with those - but I wouldn't expect to find them in a restaurant; the Yorkshire was also from frozen stock. The chicken and gravy were tasty.

we used this restaurant about 18 months ago and didn't really like it. too much hot and cold going on within the meal. we thought we would give it another go for Sunday dinner and were very pleased we did. soup and garlic mushrooms were delicious and the main course far exceeded our expectations. service was very attentive, so good all round.

After a mornings shopping in Rochester we decided to call in here for lunch. What a mistake!! We should have been aware that we were the only customers at 2.00PM which should have told us something. The chairs were old and covered in hairs, but the tables were clean and table linen also the cutlery so we decided to order the roast beef dinner, service was OK and the food arrived hot and looked OK however the beef was obviously pre packed ready sliced and had seen the microwave and the gravy had a taste that we could not describe, the veggies were also microwaved. We decided not to have a dessert and the bill for 4 was a modest £30 but not worth that as we left most of the food.

Food not the best but was cheaper than others in area Quiet when went but service friendly and efficient. If you are looking for good quality meal you will have to pay more somewhere else, no complaints based on price.

We just wanted to take an english breakfast in Rochester. We are gone to Gordon house hotel. The breakfast room was very dirty. There is not real coffee. The sausages are not cooked. It was a very little plate (for finally 5 pounds per person). We payed also 5 pounds for my 3 years old daughter. Finally, we wanted to pay by visa card and it was not possible while there is a card machine. We are obliged to pay in cash. 18 pounds without bill. Never in our life we will come back to this hotel

Being Rochester regulars we decided to try The Gordon Hotel. I had reservations as soon as I walked in as the tables felt very tired and the room was gloomy and uninviting even with the large windows.Drinks-wise, our teas and coffees were small and luke warm at best, and the food has to be the sloppiest, laziest, tasteless, poor excuse for a Sunday roast I've ever had. Imagine what a ready meal from Costcutter would be like and you're pretty close. A small potion of frozen mixed veg, frozen oven ready potatoes and small Yorkshire pudding, and pre-sliced meat with a tiny splash of watery gravy, that's it. No thought, care, preparation, condiments offered, smile from the waiter, pre-warning its cash only anywhere - basically disastrous. Instead of asking whether we would like dessert, the waiter shoved the menu under my nose, which we swiftly declined.... You know its bad when I reject a sweet! Apparently the waiter also 'forgot' to add my liqueur to the final bill so asked for me to include it in the total, and then I overheard him saying the same thing to the table next to us!In short: AVOID

I feel dreadful saying this, but the food that I had here on a Sunday lunchtime with friends was quite possibly the worst roast I have had since I left school.....the bread rolls were burger baps! Need I say more. Sorry, but don't do it!

Over the last 10 years I have eaten here on numerous occasions.I have found it to provide an affordable meal in a reasonable environment.Regrettably in the last few years there has been no investment in the restaurant or hotel, it appears to have got stuck in the 1970's. For one of Rochesters few hotels this is disappointing as it is in a great location. On a positive note I have always found the staff in the restaurant and bar to be polite and very helpful. My last trip (family meal), was to be fair not one to be remembered. The side plate and cutlery on the table was not clean (plate actually had left over butter on it, somebody else's?). The whole place gives an impression that it is unhygienic as the cleaning appears to be haphazard at best. The food was luke warm and not at all appetising.I wasn't going to bother posting on here as we are unlikely to go back but to be fair I comment on all other places I visit so felt it right to do so. Sad to say I cant recommend this place anymore.

Terribly rude and arrogant waiter - we did not leave him a tip.Do not order the Sirloin steak it is tough as old boots. They did exchange it for a Rump steak which was juicy but took some time to arrive by which time my girlfriend had eaten her meal and had then watch me eat. Starter was unnaturally hot as in microwave hot which made the puff pastry soggy.Such a shame this venue has such potential and a very bad waiter has spoilt anything that the chef could create. Lastly, the kitchen is very close to the dining hall and you could hear the chefs noisy banging plates, chopping vegetables and shouting at the waiter. Someone had a nasty cold and coughing profusely (hopefully not over our order).

We were a party mof 4 booked for Sunday lunch. The restaurant was very tired and needed updating. We did not order a starter but all ordered a Sunday Roast. Three of us pork which was no at at all tasty the whole meal was very dried up and covered in a thick gravy not the most eye catching meal I have had. One of our party had Chicken which was just eatable but still covered in thick gravy. We did not order a sweet. On many occasions we had passed this venue and thought we would try the food. Unfortunately the quality of the food would have to improve a great deal before we would book again. This restaurant is in a lovely setting in the High Street and could be a real impact with improvements.

I went here for a dinner with my partner recently (we had met here a few years ago) I arranged a booking in advance and was able to go and view the tables etc before actually brining her to choose a suitable one. When we arrived we were seated in a waiting area with a small bar, the man was ver friendly but after seving our drinks disappeared for about 15 minutes. When he finally arrived back he was again very friendly and took us to be seated in the restaurant. The food was average to good. The prices were actually very reasonable. The interior had a very lived-in feel..this isn't necessarily a bad thing but what really let this place down was the incredibly slow service. There seemed to be jsut one waiter serving all the tables and there was a considerable gap between courses.

I have just taken my family for lunch at the hotel, and honestly wished I had gone somewhere else. As a resident of Rochester for many years, I have never been into this supposed "restaurant" and strangely enough I will never return again. The waiter is surly and really appears not to care less, after waiting half an hour for coffee, I asked where the coffee is, he said "I'm dealing with it". We ordered food off the menu, there were only two people in the restaurant at this time, the food took a good 40 minutes to arrive, which for 2 all day breakfasts and two kids chicken nugget lunches seemed quite unbelievable. The food was dry and was delivered to the table by the cook, as the "waiter" was still dealing obviously with the coffee. Do Not Go Here ..... trust me, it is not an enjoyable experience.

We were charmed by the olde worlde feel to the place but that was as good as it gets, olde worlde clearly became dirty and fusty when we looked closer. Husbands pate unappealing, my mushrooms cold and tasteless, daughter said her soup ok though. Roasts all belonged to Aunt Bessie and wine only available in miniature bottles. Couldn't wait to get out of the place to be honest, had I read the reviews would not have touched the place with a ten foot bargepole but we stopped by unexpectedly on our journey home.

We have just returned from Rochester after a lovely weekend at the Dickins christmas festival. However we were very disapointed by our meal on Saturday evening. When we arrived on Saturday morning to Rochester, we went straight to The Gordon House hotel to book for our evening meal as my husband and I had prevously eaten there and had had a lovely time. Having booked for 8pm, we went off to enjoy the rest of our day. That evening, we arrived at the hotel at 7:50 and was told we would seen shortly and to have a drink at the bar. 20 minutes later we were handed some menus and were told it would be about another 10 minutes - they came in to take our order and everything we wanted on the menu seemed to have been sold out. the only steaks they had left was Rump which we didnt want. The waiter thought it was really funny and kept laughing when we asked for an item and he said they had sold out. We ended up ordering food we didnt really want to eat just because we knew everywhere in Rochester was fully booked and wouldn't be able to get anything else to eat. They gave us one drink on the house and We were finally seated at 9:10pm (a whole hour and 10 minutes after our booked time) However we were not seated in the restaurant AT ALL - we were taken to have our dinner in the residents dining room where we were the only people. There was no atmosphere at all and my brother had to ask if they could put some music on just so it wasnt so quiet. The food was ok and obviously eatable but not what we wanted or expected and by this time we were so hungry. I think the staff need a lesson in customer relations, if they couldn't accomodate us, they they should have said when taking our booking and we would have booked elsewhere - they knew it would be busy so they should have ordered more food especially as they had Sunday to go as well. Not an experience I would like to repeat. I did hear that the hotel had changed hands - not a very good start !!!!!

The Gordon is quite popular amongst the locals (good sign). Good. well cooked British food. Today we had lamb shank - it wqs as tasty and as tender as it could be, with a home made red wine jus. They had finished spotted dick - and nothing else on the desert menu took my fancy. "What about apple pie". Well apple and pastry with custard was knocked up right away by the obliging staff. And at £10 for two courses per head you could not complain.

Went out for a family meal 6 of us. Three had the lamb which was OK with plenty of meat. The 3 roast chicken dinners were very disappointing. Only 2 small dry pieces of chicken no bigger than an half of an egg. Nothing like the description on the menu of fresh cooked roast chicken. A tiny single piece if stem broccoli, the roast potatoes not that roasted. The mash, Yorkshire, carrots OK. But little things like ordered diet coke without ice, came with ice. I'm sure this is done to ensure you get less drink. Dinners then arrived without cutlery for all 6. Had to wait for 2 sets. No one came to ask how our meal was. Really disappointed after it was recommended. Is it because it's new management. It wasn't busy at all as it was 1.45. Wouldn't recommend it at all.

Breakfast...cold plates, with a clear film on them possibly a dishwasher issue? Asked for a clean plate and was rudely told that she would get me another, but it would be exactly the same!! Returned with a clean plate, and silently offered it to me befire walking away. I was so incensed by this poor attutude that I didn't bother to eat breakfast.
