The worst fish and chips tiny sausage in batter heated up chips over priced for what it is won't visit again very disappointed

Never ever had a bad meal from here, consistently serves the best fish and chips, probably the best in Cornwall in my opinion. Certainly havent tasted better anywhere else.

Great fish and chips and very friendly attentive staff. Very convenient location so I can get it on the way back from work. What could be better than a fish and chips drive-thru?

These are the best fish and chips we’ve ever had and the quality is consistent. The fish is beautifully fresh and cooked to order. Chips are perfectly crispy. Mushy Peas and Curry sauce fabulous and all a perfect sized portion. Order at a drive through arrangement, your order taken with a smile and a quick chat at your vehicle then collect from the friendly fryer and staff at the van. We’ve tried other places but we choose to drive out of our way, sometimes weekly to have Golden Fry Fish and Chips.

I will admit it has been a while since I visited or eaten from Golden Fry. So glad we tried them tonight, such a delightful meal. The chips you could tell weren't shop bought and the fish omg delicious. My only disappointment was the fact they don't do jumbo sausages but knowing Phil there will be a valid reason.

I don’t normally leave reviews but I felt I needed to this time, the fish and chips are amazing! The sea bass he let me try was out of this world. From the father and daughter in the white Tesla, see you again on our weekly visit.

After a published 4.5 star review I had high expectations for this place. 1st of all post code on web site takes you down a lane not the attual site. After driving around (because they do not answer the phone) I eventuall saw a sign and discovered that this was a food truck not a chip shop. Not to be discouraged I entered the large dusty empty lot and took my place in the que behind 4 vehicles. When you get near to the truck there is a menu. Eventually after a long wait, a man in a high visbility coat approached and asked me foor my order, and informed me that I would have to repeat my rder at the truck for the correct charge. I ordered a large cod 2x large chipps and a kids cod bites and chips 3 large maushy peas and a curry sause. 24 pounds! Very very smmall portions of fish and chips pease were horrible! What a absolute scam! AVOID THIS SCAM! Especially if you are a tourist. I think they deliberately short you because you are not a local! Really should be ashamed!

What a absolute total rip off, heard really great things about you lot, but when we got home, feeling like we’re about to have a banquet we were so disappointed. We ordered 2 large cod, which was 20cm long, 2 large chips, approx 40 chips and curry sauce and mushy peas, £25 really unhappy and won’t recommend you at all

I've now been for a fish supper three times and every time it has proved an excellent choice. A good portion of cod in a crispy batter, proper chips and all served in recyclable materials. Pleasant staff and Covid safe. I'm local and wouldn't go elsewhere. Top marks.

Amazing Fish and Chips! People queued all round the car park land rightly so. Fish was excellent and lovely chips, all cooked to order. Genius idea with dual lanes in the drive through, we will be back when next in the area!

Don't let the fact that it is a "mobile" Fish and Chip place put you off! It was brilliantly organised, the staff were most pleasant and helpful and the fish and chips were delicious! Although there was a small queue, it went down very quickly considering it is freshly cooked to order. The children's meals were also very good and the only "complaint" was that they didn't have any pickled onions, so remember to bring your own!

Seriously impressed by these guys. The nicest battered fish I've had in years. The drive-through takes a bit of getting used to, but I love the fact that everyone can stay in their cars. Yes there's a bit of a wait if you go on a Friday but I think it's worth it. I think they're doing the best they can in difficult circumstances. For me they're too busy on a Friday, but they're the best chippy in the area by a longshot so I've moved my fish and chips night to a Wednesday! All good.

We have bought fish and chips many times from both the Golden Fry shop and the drive-through at Callywith, and their fish and chips have always been excellent. However, yesterday evening we arrived at the drive-through at about 5.30pm and an hour later we were still waiting. There was apparently a problem with the gas, but we didn't find this out until my partner got out of the car to ask the marshall. We left at 6.40pm with no fish and chips after waiting for over an hour. Some communication would have been the very least we should have expected, but this did not come, we had to seek it out. Very, very badly run last night, and we shall vote with our feet in future.

Golden fry operates a drive through style chippy approximately two miles from my home, it is popular and can have wait times of up to 40 minutes. On my last visit I waited 30 minutes, ordered cod and chips., paid and drove home and to my frustration there was no fish in my carton. Drove all the way back,asked for my fish - didn't even get a "sorry" ..... Really disappointing.

Went to drive in van 711pm Thursday night 15 cars in queue to be told they had turned fryers off at 645pm By a scruffy hi vis wearing gentleman Poor service would never go back

Myself and the entire office throughly enjoyed our fish and chips for lunch yesterday. The chips were tasty and the fish was melt in the mouth good. Nice to finally get a decent chippy where both fish and chips are delicious.

Forget Rick Stein in Padstow, head to Golden Fry in Bodmin instead. Great service and friendly staff. We had haddock and medium chips with gravy. Fried to perfection and the ideal portion size. Very impressed thank you! Would definitely return

Parking outside the Golden Fry can be a problem but the struggle is worth it. Top class fish and chips to take home and enjoy.

Have been here many times and, they also do a Mobile Fish & Chip service. Either way, their food is great and a treat to eat.

I dont live in bodmin anymore but when im back seeing the folks I love to pop in and see phil and get a quick meal which I know will fill me up..

Food was nice, wouldnt say amazing but to a decent standard. Staff were friendly and the food outlet was clean amd presentable. Prices are fair and portions are good value for money. Only critism is that there was a small pool of oil in my tray where the chips hadn't been drained properly.

Best fish and chips weve had, since moving back to Cornwall in May. Good size portions and yummy crispy batter on the fish. Have had the fish and chips from the shop and the van, both were good.

We had not visited Bodmin before and were looking for somewhere to eat. This place is brilliant, we had take away, which was lovely and great value for money. Staff were friendly and the place was spotlessly clean.

We only had cod with peas but both me and my partner agreed it couldn't have been a better fish....

Would never eat here again very bad service messed up order and would not correct my order food now stone cold fit for the bin all they do is chat to other people when taking orders it took them 20 minutes to complete my order of fish and chips twice with a can of coke

We have just placed and picked up our order from Golden Fry. Simple southern fried chicken burger no coleslaw and chips. This is the 4th time now my burger has had coleslaw after requesting it with out and confirming 3 times on the phone.Not only that but it's more coleslaw than chicken so I can't even take it out served with under cooked chips. As you can guess I am not very impressed, especially as we live outside Bodmin.Now going without dinner so thank you for that.

After moving to Bodmin. Golden fry is just a few hundred yards from us. Nice chips, fish cake, chicken & mush pie & battared sausage.

Good food and sensible value for the size. Enjoyable, tasty, not too greasy and good portions. OK parking is a problem but the food was very good with no complaints. Had fish and chips which was more than enough for one.

I think this is the best chippy around and sf chicken in a bun is the best. I can't say I have had better fish and chips yet either, not even in padstow. Good fresh food, good portions but service admittedly not the best. If you ring up to place order for delivery you usually get someone who has learning difficulties because it can takes ages to give them your address. There are a couple staff that don't know what service with a smile is but they don't realise what they are like and ones the owner and the other woman has been there for years!

Best chips locally after the Lanivet chippy taken a bit of nose dive recently. Bit pricey but I suppose sign of the times!

As we were on holiday and didn't know the area I read some of the reviews before going and was so pleased i ignored the bad reviews as the freshly cooked fish and chips i bought were absolutely delicious. i am not sure what they do different to their batter but is was so light and tasty and not greasy. Thank you from the Londoners who ordered jumbo stuff last night

The people that were wearing hats seemed quite nice and friendly. Large lady not wearing a hat spoke so rude to me. Never experienced such bad service. Mutterd sarky comments under her breath. Will never go back because of her.

Handy to where I live. Great fish and chips. Staff always friendly and helpful. No dinning area. There are a few tables to sit at not sure if food can be consumed on the premises.

Ok but nothing special. Visiting Bodmin for the week. We struggled to park and were amazed that the locals (and even employees) just park in the middle of the road. However once we found a space we waited for our order and were soon served. Generally feeling was there was nothing wrong with the food but I have tasted a lot better and I'm not sure I would return.

We've eaten here twice this week while on holiday from Kent. Food is excellent - as are service and value. Best chippie in BodminRichard

Always visit the golden fry when we travel to bodmin . Never had a soggy fish and always looks freshly cooked when I go , my other half loves the southern fried chicken in a bun beats other fried chicken brands hands down . Staff are friendly shop always appears clean and tidy good selection on the menu smaller portions for children as well can't fault it

Went the not so golden fry............ must have been a bad day , week year served by a very unfriendly woman, came in the middle of her conversation with work mate .... treated as an irritant.. SORRY MONEY IS HARD EARNED.. and wont be spending it in this chippy ..........

We have only discovered this gem of a fish and chip shop in the last year and now travel 10 miles each way to visit as in our opinion they are one of the best F&C shops we have found in the past 22 years of living in Cornwall. The food is always crisp, tasty and well presented and we have always found all of the staff members friendly, even when we have arrived just before closing and effectively held them up after a long, hot frying shift. The owner and his son certainly know their art - can't fault it!

I've never tried the fish, but I love the southern fried chicken in a bun and the rest of the family love the chicken on the bone. Proper potato chips, not frozen ones and good size portions too. Think they even open Sundays, maybe.

Best of the multiple chip shops in Bodmin, but not great selection of different foods and batter is often a bit soggy. The fish isn't as fresh tasting as you'd expect being so close to the sea. Staff are really friendly, service is quick and it is clean and bright in there.

I use this chip shop regularly because I don't have to wait long and I know the food will be excellent. The fish is always top notch and the specials are great value for money. The southern fried chicken in a bun is also amazing! Staff are friendly and always a good atmosphere in there from both staff and many regular customers.

Well definitely not golden, more tarnished brass. Small portions, seen bigger fried goujons and each visit which is normally a last resort never any change, I will agree with a previous review there fried chicken excellent, but its a fish n chip shop and so why can't they manage to cook crispy batter its always soggy n under cooked this chippy used to be better than this,

My husband and I are regulars at Golden Fry. The food is always hot and tasty. My husband loves the southern fried chicken which he says is better than KFC!!! Quick service and always a friendly smile from Phil.

Found them on Facebook & thought we would try their special. Fast & friendly service. Thankful that they didn't serve it in polystyrene containers! Not too oily. Real potatoes instead of packet chips. Was a pretty good feed. Will frequent them again!

This chippy has really gone down the pan, I really used to like this place when I regularly passed through Bodmin on business, however never again! Badly cooked fish almost raw with soft inedible batter, when I complained I was not offered a replacement. It appears that the place is no longer staffed by the owners but relies on staff who don't understand anything about customer relations and customer retention and certainly can't cook good food. As I said earlier - Never Again!

Okay so as someone who travels frequently especially weekends, I need to eat and without fail have my beloved fish and chips at least twice a week. So I know a good chippy when I find one.After a long day in Cornwall this Saturday (12/10/2013) I was really hungry and needed to find food! As I came through Bodmin I saw the Golden Fry, it had a few people in, so I thought I would give it a whirl. The order was medium Cod and Chips twice, it was on a special deal at £4.50 a portion. Whilst waiting I could see large number of "Rape seed oil" tins behind the counter, which didn't inspire me, but too late now I thought and We were both really hungry anyway. A few minutes later my food wad ready and off to the car outside to eat I went. Well really truly totally let down, they were rubbish, really rubbish!!! The cod, if it even was cod was grey and had no flavour at all, just not fresh I would say, and both the fish and chips were saturated in oil, rape seed oil, the batter was still raw mixture in parts and gloopy thick. Almost like they were trying to bulk out the piece of fish which again was small but worse than that was frankly inedible, even to two adults who were truly ravenous!!! So we gave up trying to eat anymore, as they were just so bad. I took both portions back to the shop and spoke to the fryer, who couldn't have been any less helpful, he didn't want to know, offered no refund or replacement and even swore under his breath as I left the shop!!! Moral of this story, don't be taken in by a convenient location and close parking in a non familiar area, or a few people in the shop. These were the worst fish and chips I have had in the last thirty years and by some margin!!! Don't make the same mistake, and if you do, don't say you weren't warned. Utterly terrible!!!

I have never meet staff we could make such a simple business so complicated. They couldn't organise a p*** up in a brewery. The fish portion was tiny considering the price. I would avoid and save your money. The other customers looked like something out of a Jeremy Kyle horror movie.

Called here a few days ago, bought medium cod and chips, not the cheapest around at £5.25. Came in a box, presentation was ok, but that was as good as it got, the chips were hard, and the only taste was that of oily greasy taste, not at all pleasant. The portion size certainly wasn't generous, which made me feel better when they went in the bin, The fish, or should I say what fish, there was more batter than fish, and like the chips, the batter just tasted of old greasy oil, with a tiny piece of fish hiding inside. Very very disappointing from a shop that should know better.

Friendly Staff in very clean, modern light and airy shop with great quality food -- 'ansome!!. Prices are competitive and the food baskets are environmentally friendly, and there is a TV screen displaying local information, which is useful.

Being so near the sea one expects lovely fresh fish not frozen apologise for fish very disappointing

Sorry you were disappointed. What went wrong? all of it... service was'nt great... food was horrible had more batter than fish.. southern fried chicken was more skin than chicken fatty greasy....and when you tell them of this its just excuses

This chippy has recently undergone a transformation from a take-away and restaurant to just a take-away and the quality has gone down with the size of the premises however the prices have increased. The fish portions were small and had very soggy batter, not a nice experience. When we pointed this out to the staff there was a "take it or leave it attitude". It does appear that there are relative new owners in charge from a couple of years ago when we last frequented the premises and the quality of fare and of service now leaves a lot to be desired.

During a recent fortnight stay in Cornwall, we visited this restaurant on 3 occasions. On first glance it may just look like a typical chippy, but once inside, we were impressed. The staff are very friendly and efficient. The food is great and plentiful and the prices could not be beaten. It's also spotlessly clean, including the toilets. On our first visit, our party of 4 adults and a 3yr old ordered 2 haddock, 2 veggie burgers, 2 side orders of chips and 2 side salads. There was far too much for us to eat. On our subsequent visits we only ordered one side order of chips and one side salad. With tea/coffee/milk, the order came to under £18. Amazing value and the food is cooked to perfection.
