Gilletts chippy in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

8 adults and 3 children staying locally. We all had various meals and the children had the kids meal deals. All the food was excellent. Huge portions, cooked to order. Throughly enjoyed it. Would call a head so the order is ready, but the service was great. Would highly recommend.

We ordered 2 foot long sausages in batter and a large chips to share. We thought the prices were very fair. The portions were excellent. Really friendly staff and excellent service. We would go back if we were ever in the area again.

Absolutely awful. Dry fish and very skinny portion. Chip oil tasted tangy. I would not return here! Very disappointing. ☹️

Rang ahead as it was quite a big order as two families travelling together from Bude back to our campsite near Holsworthy. Got back to the campsite and we opened our fish to find 3 pieces of cremated fish - the batter was so over cooked that it disintergrated into crumbs when it was cut - the fish inside was so over cooked it was chewy and I couldn’t even pull it apart to give to the dog!! They seemed to have possibly even been from the previous day and dropped back into oil to reheat? The chips were also awful - full of crispy bits and the chips also tasted like they had been recooked from the previous day! My daughter had battered sausage which she ate excuse she was hungry but in my opinion that too looked over cooked and chewy! The majority of the food went in the bin. I don’t understand why when clearly looking at the fish it was cremated so why wrap it up and give them to a customer! Awful food - worst take away I’ve ever had!

After hearing lots of great reports, left very disappointed. Finishing the week in Cornwall, saved the best till last with a chippy dinner, we've been looking forward all week for this. The prices are reasonable if the quality is high, so I did not bulk at the prices. I arrived shortly after 6om on Saturday and I thought there would be more of a queue, turn out I arrived before the queue as the line soon filled up and people queuing out of the shop, a further good sign. Food is cooked to order but was served faster than expected. U unfortunately I found out why later. Staff very pleasant and seemed genuine enough. When I returned to the chalet and unpacked everything, part of the order was wrong, which left my son disappointed, but the problem was with the large fish I ordered. It was recooked in batter. How do I know this? I started my 29 career in hospitality working at a very famous fish and shop, I know when a fish is old and been recooked in batter. The fish was very dry, no where near a large fish and the excess batter, some was fresh some was clearly old. Very disappointed. The chips however were excellent, as were the sauces, peas and sausages and battered sausage. They clearly have a loyal local following, and I feel they took advantage of getting rid of old stock to a stranger who was clearly there for a one off. One off indeed, one too many times. I gave 2 stars purely for the local following, very disappointed at paying over £30 for a dinner when I could have gone elsewhere locally.

Nice little chip shop in the middle of Kilkhampton. They were busy dealing with orders so had to wait for a few minutes. However the chips were excellent and the fish very good although the batter was crispier than some people would like.

Though staff friendly and helpful when we ate our food we found about 10% of chips were black and had to be thrown away. Sad to write this as always pleased when I find a fast food outlet catering for gluten free food.

I called at this roadside takeaway early in November one quiet lunch-time and ordered cod & chips for two. The fish was to be cooked specially, which was quite acceptable, and turned up after a short wait. We ate in the car immediately afterwards and were impressed by quality and quantity and I am therefore surprised to read the adverse comments by a few on Tripadvisor. Fresh tasting fish, not overdone, in a lovely crispy batter; chips slightly soft inside with a golden covering – these are what I like in a good takeaway F & C. I shall certainly try Gillett’s again, even if it means going slightly out of my way.

We stopped here by chance and had a small fish and chips. The batter was deliciously crispy, the fish delicious and the chips were perfectly done. Some of the best we have ever had! They were cooked to order, so we had a wait, but they were hot and crispy. They were working to orders during covid, but happy to fit us in. Definately recommend.

Phone ordered fish n chips for collection. Lady who took order very friendly and competent. Arrived 5 mins before scheduled time of 7pm. They were just finishing off the order. They confirmed the order and by the time I had paid it was ready. Well, all we can say is it was the best cod & chips we've had in a long time. Great thick pieces of cod. Wonderful crispy batter .... no soggy bottoms. Chips well cooked. Mushy peas and curry sauce very tasty. Loved it! Many thanks to the team.

Phoned order through and given collection time, turned up and it wasn’t ready. Waited a further 10 minutes.There is a notice saying “all food cooked to order”The fish was very dry and swamped in a disgusting extremely hard crispy batter , chips ok but not the best . Can not believe the food was freshly cooked.Waste of money.

We were staying on holiday in Kilkhampton and were advised to place order by phone - order ready to go when we arrived. Great chips and fantastic fish

Placed an order for Cod and chips and chicken and chips with curry sauce. Given a ticket to pick up in 30 minutes. Returned and waited 20 minutes further. Got food home to find that some of the chips were not cooked.

Yuk! Worst fish and chips we’ve ever had! Fish was dry. And their batter is like slate roof tiles its so hard! Never had batter like that before?! Peas were dried up. Chips are ok if you want some chips. I would not recommend these, awful, waste of money.

Used this fish and chip shop on Friday 17th July 2020, the chips dry and tasteless, the batter horrendous and fish disgusting £18 for two fish and chips, I bet they thought we will rob these northern tourists. I would advise anybody driving through to carry on, keep driving Bude is only 5 miles away. Maybe the owners should take a drive to Padstow and learn how fish and chips should taste. BE WARNED.

Visited twice recently, excellent food and service on both occasions. Plenty of GF options is a big bonus for us too. Great menu, lots of choice.

The food we had was very nice, not the best ever but the chips were less greasy than usual chippy's so that was a bonus. The girl on the till with green hair was very polite and friendly. However, the other young girl working was less than enthusiastic about getting food wrapped and smiling at or being friendly towards customers. Service was slow considering we were the only people in there.

One of the best fish and chips my wife and I have ever had. The curry sauce was spot on also. I would advise phoning ahead and ordering as I turned up and waited nearly 30 mins, but it was worth it.

We enjoyed a takeaway from here whilst we were staying locally. Super generous portions (particularly the children’s) the fish was lovely and fresh and so were the chips. We all enjoyed our meal 😊

Ordered a takeaway for our family of four, everything cooked too order, very good value, excellent quality and portions of food, extensive varied menu for a fish and chip shop.

Waiting time is ridiculous 40 mins + and total chaos. Our food was ready but left warming as people who had come in before us orders were not ready we were made to wait. Instead of getting the orders out as they were done they were giving orders out on who had arrived first regardless of the fact that the food was cooked and ready to go. Pasty’s were very disappointing! Once food had arrived it wasn’t the best.

Come on guys this should be super . The batter on your fish is hard and over cooked what a shame as the chips were good and the mushy peas, how can you get this wrong, for three meals of fish and large chips which were a normal medium size to me and a fish cake 25 quid really, seems like you are charging well. Up the game gilletts your custom depends on it.

Waited forever for an overcooked soggy bit of fish and what looked like a three week old reheated pie. Chips were ok but a total waste of time and money, never again.

We were on holiday in the area and needed something quick. This chippy does not disappoint. The cod was very fresh and the chips were cooked to perfection. The whole family commented on how good the food was, including our fussy 11 yo who haf chicken nuggets and chips. Would absolutely recommend this chippy as one of the best in the area.

Whilst on holiday have consulted Tripadvisor and have come here for our family meal. Excellent quality. The fish was freshly cooked with lovely crispy batter. My teenage son said that the sausages were the best he’d ever had at a fish and chip shop. Friendly staff and the queue moved quickly. We even managed to buy 2 freshly made individual cheesecakes for dessert! Would highly recommend.

We’ve just had a great fish and chip supper four adult and four children, fish was absolutely lovely, coming from a fish town ourselves where fish is always good, we couldn’t fault the local fish supply, we would definitely recommend this fish and chip shop .x

Cod cooked while you wait, while you could argue that they could have some prepared ready, particularly on opening, it’s nice that it’s fresh. The cod, meaty, the chips really good. Great value.

Visited here Friday for tea. Cod & chips not worth eating. The batter is really thick and I’m not sure it was even cod? Mushy peas from a tin ..... well that’s a no no. Very dissatisfied and disappointed. A waste of money. Yes they cook it whilst you wait, but you wait & wait! I’m sorry but these have to be up there with the worst fish & chips I’ve eaten.

I stopped by here with my partner after reading the good reviews on trip advisor. We was staying at Penstowe Park which is only a short walk away. We both had fish and chips (I had large of each and my partner had medium fish and large chips) which was cooked fresh whilst we waited. The wait was not too long and it was well worth it because the food is lovely and the portions are very generous. The staff are pleasant and efficient.

I don't understand the 'terrible' reviews. Admittedly the takeway fish and chips was disappointing the one time we had it but this review if for the associated cafe next door. We've eaten there twice now and both times it has been excellent. Loads of tea; quality fish, chips & mushy peas and good portions too. The homemade cakes are also excellent. It's dog friendly too. The drawback is its tiny so not easy to get in to at busy times. OK, it's not the best fish & chips in the UK (Inverary on Loch Fyne or Whitby in my view) but for what it is it is really good.

We popped into this little fish and chip shop and were not disappointed. The kids meals were brilliant value - sausage and chips, a drink and chocolate buttons! Good service and the food was cooked to order.

If you like your fish and chips after a 45 minute wait with lots of awful oily hard batter and limp apologetic chips then this is the place for you. There are also lots of friendly staff standing around doing nothing to look at you while you wait - very poorly organised

Went into Fryers Tea Rooms for a coffee while waiting for Gilletts Chippy to open only to discover that they were essentially the same business.

Visited today and had the best Gluten free cod chunks and chips i've ever tasted. The batter was absolutely amazing. Would recommed a visit. Nothing was too much trouble.

what a treat the fryers tea room and chippy are went in with my gran and aunt my aunt hat gluten free fish and chip nice and crisp i had a bit of a pick and mix battered sausage nuggets and a cod chunk and chips best battered sausage i have ever had and the fish was just yuuuuummmm and i do love a bit off pips coleslaw my Nan had a fry up and could not finish it so she took the rest home for her tea shows how good it was and the staff are some of the nicest people i have ever met very welcoming happy people we come here a lot and really recommend to any one i see oh and dont forget the cakes had to take 2 home but could of took more and also have a gorgeous seating area out the back to sit in the sun yuuummm yuuummmm yuuuummm

Bought a large portion of chips which I could only describe as a small portion. The small portion of chips turned out to be tasteless and stodgy. I would not go there again.

Popped into Gilletts while staying in Bude. The menu was great for gluten free options I didn’t know what to order. I opted for 2 battered sausages and large chips with curry sauce. Wow. I was so happy to have battered sausages. The batter was really thin and slightly over cooked but the chips and curry sauce more than made up for it. Would go back again but would wouldn’t have the battered sausage. Great to have a lot of gf options so grateful for that

Enjoyed to visits to this chippy last week - one for fish and chips and another for their homemade curry. Both were lovely and staff are friendly and helpful - we will going be back when in that area again

As the title suggests, we were convinced the chips were frozen. They were not very appealing or tasty and we wasted a lot of money as they were thrown away by and large. Staff pleasant though!

went here twice during a weeks holiday and it was about average id say chips were lovely fish batter was a little soggy for my tastes,and on second visit was told they dont really do pies when i asked for a potato and meat pie but ended up with a chicken and mushroom one i know go figure,and it was a little dried up ,the wait is the worst thing with this chippy if i am honest the que gets quite big sometimes but even when its not they cook everything fresh so it takes ages to get served just a warning if your in a hurry.overall though not bad at all and despite the hiccups here and there yes i would go back i have had a lot worse and no one can be perfect all the time in all honesty.

Awful pie and over cooked chips the girl serving said everything was freshly cooked to order I think from a week before, so I had to wait 10mins for a very small portion of chips and a horrible microwaved steak pie would never go there again very disappointing

We had quite a few chip shop takeaways whilst on holiday and this place was the best. It is associated with the even better Fryers Tea Room next door and they know what they are doing. Excellent quality food, brilliant size portions and great value for money. The bonus is the super friendly staff working in these places who just chat away, they always seem happy, friendly and welcoming and tell you about Kilk etc. It made a big difference as the last thing you want is a grumpy teenager or moody manager serving you. Friendly welcoming staff are the way to go - excellent customer service.

Had gluten free fish&chips;, absolutely outstanding, the batter was lovely an light, and the chips delicious! The service was outstanding the staff were very knowledgable with all the allergies. Can’t wait to go back! Thank you.

Did telephone order due to it being bank holiday weekend. Good efficient service order was ready at time stated. Staff had good system running to ensure orders were out on time. Fish was excellent and good value would use again without doubt.

Just arrived on holiday and trying to find a decent chippy. So lucky we found this great fish and chip shop on our travels. You have to wait for it to be freshly cooked but the wait was worth it. I've never had such fabulous chips, so hot and crispy. Would recommend highly.

I had read some poor reviews on here for Gilletts so was a bit dubious, but it was amazing!

Only went in for a few bags of chips for the kids, took my order straight away and I stood with a shop full of people who looked like they’d been waiting a while. I soon realised I was in a ticket queue and about 10 orders before me were all having fish etc cooked to order, I’ve never come across this ridiculous order system in any chippy ever, and I ended up waiting nearly half hour for 3 bags of chips!! The teenage lad looked very uninterested and had a lot of trouble reading the tickets his customer relations were not good. When the kids finally got their chips they were all soggy and mushed together and the didn’t eat them all which considering how small the portions were shows the quality! Can’t believe this place actually has good reviews!??

Fish and chips were great and well cooked. Prices decent too. But the mushy peas had a strange taste and caused me to spend half the night in the bathroom..... Shame

Not sure if we caught these guys on a bad day. We were visiting locally for a wedding and needed food on Friday evening, we had arrived in the area until the evening so most of the pubs had finished serving, we thought a chip shop would be our best bet. We found this one, around 9:30pm, there was no one else in the chippy, just the 2 staff members. We ordered a large chips, 2 pies, battered sausage and drinks.

Large menu available but opted for traditional sausage and chips. Long wait as everything is cooked to order ( you can phone ahead if your more organised ). Food was typical chip shop fare , portion size was disappointing .

Been using this chippy happily for over 20 years. A proper chip shop, very popular as can be judged by the queues.

Don’t let the small looking exterior put you off of this fantastic establishment!

Shockingly bad. Frozen curry sauce - Maybe forgot to re-heat? Chips were dry and hard in the middle. I asked for a pukka pie which the lady said she did - ended up with a cheap re-heated super market pie! Fish was rubbery. Maybe the food was this appalling as they were about to close. Would certainly not order from here again.

Didn't used to go here as many years ago I had two or three pretty poor meals from the place. However, standard has improved no end. Three weeks ago I decided to try them again, and was pleasantly surprised. Had fish and chips from there a couple of days ago and it was even better. Freshly cooked, excellent portion and friendly service.

Visited Daughter & Family in Kilkhampton. Decide to have Fish & Chips for tea....What better plaice to get them from than Gillets..... Great portions....Great value for money... Fish cooked to order & was worth the wait.... We were not disappointed.... 10/10 From us......

Couldn't believe it possible to find a chippie that does gluten free, and in such a small village! I had really well cooked and tasty gluten free cod and chips. It really made my holiday as usually i have to find something else to eat while my husband enjoys fish and chips. Staff were very friendly when I phoned up to check. They said they had a separate frier which was reassuring. Will definitely visit again. Thank you.

Staff were lovely and friendly, despite being extremely busy. Had a long wait for food but worth it. Hugh selection of food from fish and chips to curries, which were gluten free. Also a range of gluten free food, which was great for one of our family. Never been to a chippy who was so popular that they were selling out of certain things. Just shows how popular they were. Only 3 staff on the night we went but they worked their socks off and despite the pressure still had a smile when they handed order over.

The fish was undercooked, tasted as though it was soaking in batter for a long time.

I was staying at a campsite in Kilkhampton and we decided we wanted chips. I went on a Sunday and I must say the opening times on the door are confusing. I went at the time stated on a Sunday and it wasn't open so we didn't have chips. I went the next day and it was open. I ordered chips and gravy and chips and fishcake. The portion sizes are massive. Great tasting proper fish and chips. The staff are great too. The prices are great too

There is not a massive amount that I can say about this place. After a long day myself and my family wanted some quick easy comfort food. Gilletts chippy provided the required sustenance and was very yummy.

We found this little gem of a chippy, during a yurt holiday in July.

I went here with my family tonight while we are on holiday. We only ordered chips, fish cake and curry sauce, but got told we would have to wait 20 minutes. When we finally got the food they told us they only had one of the curry sauces we had ordered, so we agreed to have mushy peas. By this point we had very hungry children and we rushed home to eat, but on arriving home, the two medium sized chips we had ordered turned out to be tiny. Overall we were very disappointed with the wait, service and food and we would never go back there again.

Visited while camping in the area, not sure I'd bother to return.Showed promise at first as took ages to get food as it appeared to be cooked to order and shop was packed. Strange ordering system as woman behind counter didn't seem to be able to cope with all the bits of paper (we had a long time to stand and watch!!) Fish was okish but the chips were awful, tasted like re-fried in old oil.Expensive for what it was and not particularly good.

Couldnt find a chippy in Bude that did Gluten free fish and chips. Gilletts was recommended by one in Bude. Drove over and was amazed with the choice on offer, very refreshing - normally limited to one choice so very impressed. Tasted great too. Friendly helpful staff too.

We went here whilst on hols last week. There were 5 people serving yet there was a queue stretching out onto the street.Their ordering method is archaic and slow - had to wait for 20 minutes for 3 portions of chips and a piece of fish which is ridiculous.£3.30 for a large size tray of chips was outrageous - measly portions too.Sorry but this was quite possibly the worse fish n chips experience I've ever had. Shame as we were really looking forward to it.

Myself and partner had fish and chips. I was really looking forward to it as they looked great as they were put in the heated glass bit. But we also ordered pizza for the kids which took ages so when they wrapped the fish and chips the batter on the fish went to mush and was quite greasy. The kids liked the pizza though. Also got a cheesecake for pudding. Wish I'd left it in the fridge. It wasn't great.

We called in late on Saturday night after arriving wanted somemthing quick and easy to eat. We get 4 regular fish and chips. Portions s were plenty to say the least. Get small chips unless you are really hungry. The fish was really well done nice and fresh. The batter was crunchy. Highly recommend.

Always love to visit when in Kilkhampton as the food is so fresh and then staff helpful. A cut above your average chippy

You can tell if somewhere is good if the locals use it.. and they do. Friendly staff, nothing too much trouble, and reasonably priced.
