Second teashop in Boroughbridge that wants to shut early on a Friday before 2:45pm, all we wanted was a tea or coffee, but no, although invited into the tea shop, a call from the kitchen area at the rear by another unseen member of staff indicated that they had already cleaned up and were ready to go home ....... Nothing like an early finish, talk about POETS day !!!!

Average food & it would have been cheaper to get a round of coffees at the savoy! £4.40 for a latte & £5.20 for a flat white with oat milk is a disgrace! Left feeling ripped off.

We called in for lunch and ordered a hot beef & onion roll and a chicken & stuffing roll with a pot of tea. Whilst waiting I popped out to the outside toilets which were engaged. After 5 minutes a member of staff came out who had obviously been smoking in there. I went back to our table and the food was collected from the smoker who had prepared the food by another member of staff. The beef & onion roll was so disappointing as there were two tiny pieces of beef with a minuscule amount of onion. The chicken roll was slightly better. For £18 we felt underwhelmed and almost ripped off. We always try to support independent businesses but this encourages use of the multinationals as you know what you will receive.

Take away 2 medium (normal I’d say) sandwiches 1 Cornish pasty. Ham salad 2 slices, chicken 4 small pieces. HOW MUCH? £14.05. Always like to support local, never again. Rip off the visitors but not the new local resident! Shame on you. Such a shame but we will stick to the little tea pot.

Decided to go out for breakfast and popped into this cafe/ bakery. We ordered 2 sausage and egg rolls, a pot of tea and a can of Fanta. The egg was rubbery and the sausages (2 in each roll ) just basic. Nothing could have prepared us for the bill. £17.40!! For basically 4 sausages, 2 eggs 2 rolls a tea and a can of pop! We asked for the receipt and were horrified to find each roll was £6.30! At least Dick Turpin wore a mask when he robbed people. I don't mind paying a lot for decent food however this was neither decent or value for money. The prices on the wall behind counter do not give a true reflection of what you will pay . Avoid at all costs !

We've visited Boroughbridge several times, but had never stopped here before. I wish we'd kept walking and gone somewhere else, to be honest. I paid £30 for a hot beef and caramelised onion sandwich (dry, leathery, thin slices of beef, a spoonful of onions, no gravy), a bacon sandwich (bacon was hard, overcooked, and hours old), chips (tasted weird and my daughter refused to eat them), two Diet Cokes, a gingerbread bear (large and cute), and a slice of carrot cake (very moist, but not convinced it wasn't from a mix). Really disappointed in the quality of the hot food. We won't be back.

Little bakers and just after the lunchtime rush (deserted but lots of dirty tables). Got the distinct impression the staff were far more interested in getting ready for closing at 3pm than having more customers to eat in.

Nothing was too much trouble for us four thirsty travellers researching the local history on a hot Wednesday afternoon. We arrived just before closing but the staff responded to our plight with large pots of hot tea and a variety of cakes which we enjoyed on the pavement in the sun at their tables outside. Superb quality of cake, catering even at that late point in their working day by coping with our allergies and intolerances; wonderful staff and service.

Nice little bakers / coffee shop. Difficult in these circumstances but couple of seats out front. Nice tea garden at back but a bit of a trek along an alley. Nice garden but lead up to it a bit off putting. Staff a bit rude. Senior person from back pushed into till whilst I was being served didn’t acknowledge quite rude actually. Young lady serving me was great though. Obviously uncomfortable with the other persons actions and apologetic as a result

We have been working over LS12 on a building project Last few days & was out looking for our lunch one day & came across Gilchrist Bakery. 1st impressions are very much the most important & found a very clean shop on the outside, also ample parking available On entry to the shop, I was greeted by a very happy lady named Nicola the service was 1st class & with a smile throughout our visit, very unusual. The sandwich was very well stocked with ingredients & was lovely & fresh, could say the best I have ever tasted. The traditional Cornish pasty is the best on market. Very highly recommended & have been back today for lunch with same service & banter. What an awful experience; I'm not sure what was worse, the service or the cake. The staff are really unhelpful to the point of being just plain awkward. The cake was dumped on a plate, looked really unappetising and tasted pretty foul. Don't go there; there are other cafes in Boroughbridge where you will be made to feel at the very least welcome, the service will be better and the food will be edible.

The owner seems nice and the younger staff working here are lovely, but some of the women working here can be vile. Extremely expensive for what the food actually is and I witnessed a worker with black hair and glasses drop food on the floor then actually serve it straight to a customer - Was obvious and could see it from the front room!!Appalled by this and the service is extremely slow during most of the day. Was told that the triple cooked chips are actually frozen chips that are fat-fried again, all the pasties are warmed for ages in the microwave, younger employees (that outnumber the older) are not appreciated, bread is left out overnight and if the tea cakes have gone stale they are re-heated in the microwave to fool a customer! The cake I had was still partially frozen inside so I guess not a lot is fresh. Unbelievable. The employees don't even wear gloves while touching your cakes or food so I won't be going back again. The family feeling of it is nice but not enough for me to forget what I witnessed and was told.

The cafe part of this baker's shop is quite small, and as the cafe is very popular with locals it can get pretty busy. We went in after a pleasant Sunday stroll to Aldborough and had a very welcome pot of tea and a coffee, both of which were fine. We also had one of their "chubby rogue" cakes, which was excellent - and for those not in the know re North Yorkshire bakeries, this seemingly strange name is their way of getting round the copyright laws re Betty's famous "Fat Rascals".The menu here is relatively simple, but from what I saw the food looked fine and the prices reasonable. If I was rating this place purely as a cafe I would give it three stars, but the top quality cakes on sale in the baker's certainly merit an additional star.

I will firstly say that I have visited this cafe on numerous occasions and was terribly dissapointed by my last visit with my family. For cakes , quiche and other pastries it is excellent and I cannot fault it. However for breakfast it is terrible ! I knew they microwaved the bacon after a previous visit which I hate but we where hungry and thought i would give it anothe go. In brief the breakfast was terrible. The bacon was microwaved , the sausage was cheap, toast however was excellent and it really was , nice butter nicely toasted etc.The problem was the bill (and i dont mind paying btw the opposite infact) I asked for a pot of tea for two with one extra cup. I was charged £1.80 x 4 which frankly is ridicualous. I raised this point and the faxt that nowhere in a 'cafe' did it give eat in prices . Anyway I was argued with by the annoying old woman and I wont be back. What a shame as it is a lovely looking place mnarred by poor breakfasts, bad pricing policy and a rather unaproachable and mis placed old woman serving.

There are a number of small places in the town but I like Gilchrists on the High Street the best. It's small - 5 tables inside and three outside on the pavement but parking is free and the council car park just round the corner is unlikely to be full. They do the best quiche around for a very reasonable price and the coffee is good. We were so impressed with the caramel slices and Japs that we took some home for tea. There is much to commend it.

We chose here to eat while travelling 400 miles from Aberdeen to Wacton in our electric car. The food was good. The staff were friendly but service was slow. My wife had soup and I had a main. That took about 40-45 minutes. I then had to go and move the car. When I left we asked the staff if my wife could order a sweet. We explained we were rushing. When I can back she still hadn't got it. By the time she got it we had been there a good 1hr 15 min. Disappointing as no notice was taken of our polite indication we were rushing.

The waitress was friendly and efficient, she brought crayons and a puzzle page, for my grandson without being asked. Some of us chose the Christmas menu which was available without ordering in advance. We all had two or three courses and everything was nicely cooked and presented. Hopefully we can visit again soon.
