Beautiful, friendly, characterful pub with incredible food. We called very late on a busy Sunday hoping for a booking and not only did they do everything to squeeze us in, but also moved us to a quiter table as soon as one was available. Food was top notch, service efficient and friendly. Great experience.

I never review places but felt compelled to write one for this pub because we had such an excellent, all-round experience. We were three families (12 people) on our way back to London from a camping trip and felt like a pub lunch to extend our experience on a lovely summer's day. We hadn't booked anywhere, but rang a few places en route, who largely told us a flat no, or didn't even answer the phone. The George & Dragon was clearly busy but accommodated us graciously. We had a thoroughly lovely experience. The garden itself, with its central sculptural olive tree, was beautiful, the service was faultless and friendly. and the roast dinners were the best I had tasted in a long time. This is a GREAT pub, with which I could find no fault

This is a charming, old pub which serves excellent food. Our meals were honestly really nice. However, we were surprised to find that after booking a table online and ordering at the table, a moderate service charge is applied to all orders. This was written in VERY small print in a different font at the bottom of the menu. Nowhere else was this mentioned, and had we not noticed this, we would have discovered this on the bill. This is a poor practice creeping into the UK, and it shouldn't be condoned, particularly where obvious efforts have been made to conceal it. Such charges invite greater scrutiny of the service (which I wouldn't usually raise), which I will say was not special in any way, was rather impersonal. I will say that when we asked for it to be removed, there were no questions asked at least. I've seen the owners claim that most small businesses do this nowadays, but where we live the practice is totally unheard of apart from large corporate chains.

Love this pub but disappointed at having been charged service when ordering a couple of snacks and a pint from the bar. Ok I can just about get my head around adding it to the food, if you call delivering it to our table service, but I wasn't aware it had been added, and that it had been added to my pint of beer as well, which I collected myself, so it feels a bit disingenuous to put it politely. You're a lovely lot but that's a tiny bit greedy, sorry.

An idyllic setting for a traditional pub - with first class service. Stopped here for a drink after a beautiful Kent walk and immediately regretted riding a packed lunch. The food coming from the kitchen and BBQ area looked amazing. The staff were very friendly and very organised. The outside seating area was magical - still oldie worldie but modern and comfortable. The interior was a proper English country pub with dark nooks and crannies and everywhere was spotlessly clean - great attention to detail - including the toilets! Sadly we left to leave to eat our sarnies in the beautiful churchyard across the road!

Food was spot on as was the service down side was being charged 8.6% service charge. Which I feel is an American tradition. I personally would give a tip to what I feel the service is worth. Plus it's not always shared out with the staff. And if you take a car in for work or any other job your not charged a service charge. Such a pity as left a bad feeling and not sure if I'd go back

The food was ok but burger and fries could have benefited from some coleslaw beside it. I'm not keen on the 12.5% service charge being added to the bill it makes the customer uncomfortable to ask for it to be removed. It also doesn't feel like the tip is going to end up going to the staff who earn it.

We booked a table for lunch at the weekend. This an attractive old building and has recently been refurbished and all was very clean although some parts were quite gloomy with dark walls and lighting. The menu was quite varied, although 2 of the items were no longer available. The food was very good and beautifully presented. The visit was somewhat let down by the service. Our table was not ready, we had a long wait for drinks. Plates were cleared while some of our party were still eating. Many of the staff were very young, but all were friendly and keen to please. Hopefully this is an area that can be improved in the coming weeks.

We were running a bit late for our table so phoned and the kitchen was closing, so even though they were busy Tom read us the menu over the phone and got our order underway so we could get our food. All of the staff were really friendly and on the ball, and even though we were outside the atmosphere felt really cosy and elegant. The food was great, I went for the aubergine meatballs, celeriac steak and sticky toffee pudding, all beautifully presented and interesting flavours, top marks for the kitchen. Thanks to Tom, George and the rest of the team at George and Dragon. We look forward to returning for Sunday lunch soon!

First of all it’s great to see the pub in full action again. We were not disappointed, the outside area has been well thought out to due to government restrictions. The new team are well presented and both managers with excellent front of house skills. I had the homemade sausage roll to start which was good, ‘ just a small thought the relish could have been slightly more tangy’. The fish and chips was absolutely excellent, the batter was crisp and the fish sweet in flavour. Could do with a few Ottelenghi styled side dishes highlighting local ingredients. Overall we had an amazing experience and thanks to the team, we will be back soon.

We have visited this gem of a country pub on many occasions, for meals ranging from tasty, generously filled sandwiches to a full roast Sunday lunch. The food is uniformly excellent, well cooked and presented, and service is swift and friendly. We have tried most of the pubs in West Kent/East Sussex at one time or another, and the George and Dragon at Speldhrst is head and shoulders above the rest.. We recently had a family Sunday lunch there, and the sirloin of beef was amongst the best I've ever tasted. (As was the Yorkshire pudding.) The vegetables, of which there was a wide range, were beautifully cooked. The puddings were also delicious, with a special mention for the apple and berry crumble. Booking for Sunday lunch is advisable, and deservedly so. Highly recommended.

We decided to book here for a table of 14 for a birthday lunch as it was convenient for all of the travelling family. Wasn’t sure what to expect initially and wasn’t expecting much. Very simple local pub with its usual quirky layout. The service was good, lots of attention for drinks etc which was great, considering we were an awkward table of 14 I thought the service was very good. I am vegetarian so went for the only veg option on the menu and wasn’t expecting much. However I was very surprised. The risotto was very tasty, best I have ever tried. Credit to the shelf. I didn’t try anything else on the menu but I did try my daughters chips and again they tasted very good. Overall my experience here was very good, food quality was superb, service was good, price was good. Recommended if you are local or passing near by.

Went to settle our curiosity. Food was good quality and well presented. And this meant we went back in the summer holidays. Preferred the summer trip with a table downstairs. Our previous visit we were seated upstairs. Upstairs is really interesting - low beams and feeling authentic. However all intimacy is lost. Should not be an issue, unless, as we did, your a seated next to a loud and self-involved family. We survived and enjoyed the food, but also had to endure their bickering over the food and the bill. Clearly one did not want to be there so was making their point to dad, mum, ex-wife, however, and in the process invading the ambience for everyone upstairs. So, as upstairs is reasonably open as you would expect in a beamed building, be aware that the coin may fall badly at a popular time of year and your visit is impacted. Nothing the proprietor can do about it either.

Having had some wonderful meals at the G&D over the years it is so sad to see how things have declined so much over the last couple of years. I know you have had problems with getting a replacement chef but to be honest although the food has been better in the past with more seasonal produce and better choice, it really can’t be blamed on the kitchen. Where is the face of the establishment? The owner? The person who gets to know the locals and engages with the heart of the village. Sadly there isn’t anyone. Yet another change of management recently which hasn’t improved things at all really. Doesn’t have a presence and is certainly not running a tight ship. Usually sticky tables, no candles lit, no effort to create an ambience fitting to go with the rather high prices charged. Someone needs to start really caring about this place and have the passion and drive to bring it back to the wonderful local it used to be!

Three chums and myself choice the D&G for one of our regular nights out. We had been there previously for a beer or three, but had not dined there. The pub is full of character and charm and has a fascinating history. Not to our surprise, the food and service was spot-on and generously plated, so much so, that a doggy bag was given to one of our party at the end of the evening. Beef, lamb and pork were roasted exactly as requested and were washed down with excellent Claret and Rioja. One tiny quibble was sorted when we asked for the background music to be turned down a fraction, which was sorted straight away. The staff were friendly and proffessional and nothing was too much trouble. Exquisite and highly recomended. Cheers.

The atmospheres great. Ive actually been frequenting the establishment as a pub for about 42 years! My mother and I chose the roast rib of beef Sunday roast, my partner chose a vegetarian risotto, and Dad chose the Hake.Well - every one of the four of us said their food was sublime. And it was, probably the best roast lunch we’d ever had, and Dad’s Hake was perfect. what a genius chef - I washed my meal down with a pint of Brakespears Gold, and as a firm real ale drinker, I can say it ranked as about the best pint Ive ever had, in all my 62 years! The old building is amazing and the decor inside old and comfortable. 6 of us chose to eat in the bar and enjoyed an excellent roast lunch here on Sunday. The roasts (2 pork and 3 beef) were lovely, all served with a good variety of perfectly cooked vegetables and all the trimmings. The fish eater enjoyed his bream. The wines and beers were all excellent. Our waiter dealt with our demands for flat plates for the roasts with good humour bringing them out of the kitchen for approval. We were told that the meals were prepared by the sous chef so we sent our compliments. Being one of the best roast lunches we’ve had for a while, we will be back.

Our lunch for four was very good. Lovely starters of asparagus, crispy cooked egg and hollandaise sauce. Pan fried Hake with crispy skin, mussel and clam sauce, crushed potato, a Duck salad and a huge portion of veggie risotto. The pub seemed quiet for a Thursday lunch and the inside slightly gloomy. The passageway to the restrooms was interesting with lots of small stairs en-route and the men in our party commented on the design of their bathroom- I leave that to your imagination! was very disappointed as we have been to the G&D; several times before and expected great things. We were treating guests from abroad... I was embarrassed The soup was tasteless and the rest of the meal was mediocre and didn’t justify the price! We sat downstairs in a dark corner by the fireplace and window. We asked if the lights worked and the waitress just said the lightbulbs needed changing. Hint, please could you get us a lightbulb...so we ate in the dark and used our iPhones to see our food. Seriously, couldn’t they borrow a lightbulb from another room, seat us where there were working lights, or better yet, keep a stock of bulbs...or maybe staff who are less obtuse....New management has had no positive contribution.

I went to this charming old in for lunch with my son. I had loin of venison and my son had the vegetarian burger. We have eaten in many fine restaurants, but I can honestly say that this was the best food we have ever tasted.

We had drinks in the bar whilst we waited for our table. Then when the waitress came to take our order, we ordered more drinks plus bread which we expected to be served before our starters. However, after waiting for about half an hour (with repeated enquiries), our drinks finally arrived followed immediately by the starters and then the bread! We sent the bread back as it arrived too late - only for it to be brought back and left on the table (and charged for on the bill). We were then told, that we would not be asked to pay the service charge!! The food was excellent and the attitude of the waitresses was pleasant although the service, obviously, was not of a standard one would expect. Hopefully, this was an isolated case as it is a lovely place for a meal.

I had a lovely meal with friends at the George and Dragon. We went on a Saturday evening and the food was delicious and the service was great. I would recommend a visit to this wonderful old pub set in the lovely village of Speldhurst. Looking forward to going back again soon!

Great food and service. One of our go to pubs when we're looking for good food in a cosy pub. Mid level value.

I should have looked at Tripadvisor before booking lunch at this pub. I am not surprised that nearly 20% of visitors rate this place as either terrible or poor. Having booked a table for lunch for 6 people and got an email confirmation we were told on arrival that there was no booking. They did find us a table upstairs which is an interesting place with no atmosphere and what appears to be no service! Having expressly stated we needed to leave by 3.00pm to take my special-needs son back to his school on the Isle of Wight we squashed together as six people on a table for four. This was just after 1.00pm. The six of us were given one menu between us and after 30 minutes of waiting were offered a drink. We ordered and when the soup arrived there was no spoon. We waited 5 minutes to find a waitress who apologised and then waited a further 10 minutes before the spoon arrived. The soup was cold by the time it could be eaten! My special needs son is a Coeliac and therefore gluten free is essential. Although advertised as a gluten free friendly pub the choice for gluten free was basically the roast without roast potatoes, gravy and yorkshire pudding. The service was as slow as I have ever known in any pub. At 2.30pm when we ordered a pudding we asked whether it would arrive in time for us to leave by 3.00pm. At 3.10pm when the food had still not arrived I said we had to leave. We were charged for the complete meal despite not receiving our puddings and whats more the bill included service, which in itself was a joke as there had been none. Now being in a great hurry to get my son back to school I left speaking to the manager who told me he had a great excuse today as the A21 was closed and everyone had arrived late so there was nothing he could do about it. The words sorry or I wont charge you for what you didn't eat, never crossed his lips. I have only ever been to this pub under previous management and it used to be a beautiful, friendly high quality establishment. I strongly advise people not to go here as they will undoubtedly be disappointed. A course on customer awareness and management skills is needed as without it, I can only see further negative reports on tripadvisor for this hugely disappointing pub.

Popped in without a reservation on a Friday lunchtime and sat in the Buttery. Two of us started with the soup of the day which was curried parsnip which was good and one had the terrine, also good. Then we had the veggie burger, steak & Ale pie and a charcuterie plate. All were very good and filling, so that’s could not find room for a dessert.

Almost a year now since I last visited The George & Dragon Inn. I shall keep this report short and to the point. The food we ate was very good - no problem there. I think the decor needs to be updated in someway, shape or form. The chairs are very uncomfortable. What does let the George & Dragon down is the slow service. Service is with a smile and friendly BUT.....BUT it is so SLOW. Friends who come on a more regular basis say the same thing. For example on this visit the pub was not that busy. We were shown to our table then waited for at least ten minutes for someone to bring us a menu. Then waited for another 12 mins for someone to take our order. The order was not written down which led to further problems on the service of food to our table later. After placing our order waited 15 mins for our starter which was very good - the soup. Anyway the same delay waiting for our main course. There were other people having the same problems. More staff is needed. The staff on our visit were very friendly but went missing for a lot of the time. Great place to eat BUT please someone sort the service out. 12:5 % service charge ?????

Today was our first visit to the George and Dragon and as it was a Sunday we were looking forward to a roast dinner. However when we arrived at 2 o’clock we were told both roasts were finished. The waitress said the chef recommended the Piri Piri chicken or the Hake. Very disappointedly my husband ordered the chicken, with no fries but salad instead and I ordered sausages and mash. We also ordered the bread basket to start. Half an hour later the bread basket had still not arrived and seeing that someone had just arrived and got their bread basket within minutes of sitting down I chased up where our bread was. The waitress then appeared with our bread basket and my husband’s chicken. I said we wanted the bread basket to start and she apologised that it had been put through with the main course. She took the bread away and then appeared back with my sausages and fries for my husband. We said we had replaced the fries with salad. She took the fries away but did not appear back with the salad. After 5 minutes and the salad still not appearing we chased up where the salad was. Five minutes later and my husband had almost finished his chicken the salad arrived. By this time two other tables had sat down near us and to my amazement I saw they had got roast dinners although they had arrived after us. As we had now finished I ordered a decaffeinated cappuccino to finish, the same waitress that took my order then appeared with a filter coffee. I was about to speak when she realised her mistake and said she would bring me the cappuccino I had ordered. When we got the bill I refused to pay the service and the waitress asked why. I explained my reasons and questioned why people who had sat down after us had roast dinners. The waitress replied they had run out but the chef had got some more. I said if I had been told I would have to wait for my roast dinner I would have but to be told there was none and clearly there was, it was just cooking, was unacceptable!!

I took my elderly parents for lunch here as they used to live in the village and have happy memories of the pub but we were so disappointed. the service was appalling: we had to ask for our drinks twice, the food took over 50 minutes to arrive and they had forgotten my order (we were only 3 and the pub was not busy, how can you forget 2 roast dinners and hake!) the food was very average and rather expensive. the staff were embarrassed at such poor service and did take off the price of my food but honestly, the experience was not saved. disappointing.

We had a lovely Sunday lunch at the George & Dragon. We sat in the garden to enjoy the sunshine, the staff was friendly and accomodating and the fish & chips just perfect (with fresh and thick piece of cod). Good wine choices for non beer drinkers.

This is our local, which represents the centre of our village culturally and spiritually (almost). Great food, welcoming of dogs and walkers. Good in the summertime, but quintessentially English in winter - cold nights fended off with real log fires and local ale. As one of England’s oldest taverns, there’s such a great history, don’t miss out!!! (Plenty of parking too and a wonderful church opposite for any repentance).

A quiet evening in a nice place in a nice location. Service was excellent throughout. The food was good. The hake in a mussel broth was tasty and well cooked and the steak pie was beautifully presented with great flavour. There was a good range of wines, beers and spirits available.

Visited in March 2018. Found this a fascinating venue steeped in nearly 1000 years of history. Wonderful oldie worldie pub with a great selection of beers, wines and gins. I am told the food is good but unfortunately I did not get time to sample it on this trip. Found management and staff friendly and engaging. Looks like they have a professional team on hand. Looking forward to the next trip

A very warm and cosy pub with a good kitchen, serving a better standard of pub classics. The bread at the start was lovely but it was the mains that won the day - pork belly, black pudding and bubble n squeak! The smoked haddock gratin was pretty damn fine too. Will definitely be returning.

Looked to try a pub in the area that we hadn’t visited and read several reviews and looked at the menu online; all seemed positive. We booked a table for 2 online for dinner. Arrived 15 minutes ahead of time but we’re asked how we had booked as they, at first, didn’t seem to have our reservation. Actual menu was different from that online - it happens so no problem. But we then both ordered the “pie of the week” but after we ordered this they came back 15 minutes later telling us that the pie was not exactly as stated on the menu. Then ordered another round of drinks which didn’t arrive until we reminded them what we had ordered. The food arrived but the quality was disappointing. They state that the meat is supplied by Fullers - an excellent butcher but I guess it depends how it is cooked. The meat in the pie was tough. Overall a disappointing experience and given the number of good gastro pubs in the area we wouldn’t recommend this one for an evening meal.

We had a Sunday lunch for five. Very warm welcome from attentive staff. It was particularly impressive that our server knew the strength of their ale. Mini starters of garlic and tomato breads with olives served with a spring of rosemary and something that looked like a translucent flower. All very tasty. Now to the highlight! A whole chicken for two served with roast potatoes, grilled vegetables, creamy swede and stuffing. The chicken was nothing less than superb, genuinely melt in the mouth. Other dishes of belly pork and fish and chips went down well. The chicken dish even provided seconds for one of our group! Not inexpensive but real value for money. The only downside was that on a cold day it was not quite warm enough in the area in which we ate.

Absolutely shocking value for money and quality. The photos are completely misleading. Ordered a cookie dough takeaway. It arrived and was about half the size of the photo, the cookie was rock hard and the sauce was cold and completely hardened. Was completely inedible.

Came in this weekend with my wife and was served by the legendary Max. Drinks were spot on, however I did see the aforementioned bartender dip his cock in a few of the customer's pints (including mine). I don't know my drinks very well so assume this was all part of the preparation process.
