Very poor baguettes here. I was expecting a nice crusty French type baguette and what I received was a large hot dog roll.

Me and my toddler often go to Gems for a coffee (and Babyccino) or for a hearty lunch. Food is always fresh, tasty and generous potion size. Friendly customer service. They cater well for my young son and have lovely specials too. There is a real community feel to Gem's and we have always been made to feel welcome when we've visited. High chair is available.

As a regular customer since soon after Cem (Gem) opened, I have never had a meal I didn't like either from the regular menu or the 'Specials' board. Portions are generous and of good quality. Prices are very affordable. Apart from the food, the atmosphere is great and the 'at table' service by Cem's wife Kirsty and waitress Magda is efficient and friendly. Cem does his best to greet all customers, too. .

Great little café. Always a great service, the owner is friendly and a great cook. Although its a small place it's also enjoyable because everyone is friendly. We pop in all the time during our lunch break and with a great takeaway menu too its ideal if you want to phone an order through and pick it up.

I guess I qualify as a regular at this little 'Gem of a Bistro' so it's high time I shared my experiences. That's a simple task as it's a place to enjoy wonderful service in a really really friendly atmosphere inspired by Gem and Kirsty the proprietors. Terrific and very imaginative choice of tasty delights on offer with a number of unique specialities to tempt the palate. High recommended ..

My family and I popped for some lunch today. There were lots of staff considering the bistro is only small, but they were all friendly. They didn't rush you, but you knew they were available as soon as you wanted to order. We arrived at 12.05 and breakfasts finished at 12, but the gentleman said if we wanted anything from the breakfast menu he would still be happy to prepare it for us. When our food arrived, the portions were generous and tasty. The prices were reasonable and we wouldn't hesitate to call in again for a quick bite to eat.

Visited this cafe for a quick business meeting with friends. We both had latte coffees with standard breakfast which came with toast.Standard breakfast was very good value - less than £4 for two sausage, two fried eggs, bacon, baked beans, mushrooms and half a tomato. The place was very busy with a vibrant attitude and lots of people coming in and out. Service was very quick and the breakfast was very good value for money.I would definitely go back and try some of the delicious looking buns and cakes they had on offer.

We were told about this place by the lady in the curtain shop up the street. It is a small, cosy bistro with a good menu and a specials board. The owner and his staff are really friendly and polite. We both chose off the specials board. I had the chilli burger and my wife had the steak and mushroom baguette. They were both superb. I never knew a burger could taste so good! No room for deserts, which was a pity because they looked divine. Think we'll be visiting Normanton again soon and heading straight to Gem's! Very highly recommended.

A delightful place to visit. Offering inside and outside seating. We popped in for coffee whilst passing through Normanton. As soon as we entered staff where polite and friendly, a good morning was called from behind the counter by the owner. The bistro offers a lovely selection of homemade meals, on the menu today: leak and potato soup, spaghetti bolognaise, chill with rice, carrot cake and coffee and walnut cake. There is also a tempting menu on each table. Although we didn't have anything to eat the food smelled as delicious as it looked. The inside is a miss match of tables and chairs, which adds to the character. Whilst here a lady popped in, I believe it was her first time, her husband had been in last week and had scones and told his wife they where the best he had ever tasted, she wanted to buy some to take away. The owner was brilliant, he asked her if she wanted to take some frozen ones home to keep in the freezer, the lady was very grateful as she was only going to put then in the freezer when she went home. The owner then offered to keep hold of them until she had finished shopping in town. A kind gesture. Back to the coffee we had. The mocha is one of the best I have ever tasted that I had to have another. My husband who rarely drinks mocha decided to have one....he enjoyed it.

My experience with The Hide was somewhat of a mixed bag. Let me explain. My partner and I decided to go here for our anniversary - we are both big steak fans and wanted to try something new. Upon arriving, the restaurant was very quiet - for a Tuesday I expect this and it served us well. The lady who served us was nice, if a little clueless about what they did/didn't sell but more on that later. We sat down at a window table and was pleasantly surprised by how lovely the whole restaurant looked from where we were sitting. We decided on a corner-window seat as we didn't know how full the place would get later and didn't want to get in the way. I sat directly in the corner and was slightly dismayed to see that I had sat DIRECTLY under a speaker. It was rather loud and I had to raise my voice higher than normal to be heard by my partner sitting only 3 feet away. The server came to take our drinks order, and this is where things started to sour slightly for me. As a steak fan, I am also a huge fan of a good red wine to go with it. I asked the server "What wines do you have?" her response..."Red, White and Rose" - I couldn't help but chuckle slightly, so I asked what reds she had, she didn't know. The first thing any server should know is what they are serving, what is available and how much it is, she knew none of these things and instead had to go across the restaurant to the till, to check. She came back to me there was a Shiraz, Malbec and Merlot - not exactly a billionaire's banquet as you can see, but I reluctantly got the Shiraz - it was vile. I then got a pint of some-thing or other, and that tasted lovely. Partner got a gin and a cider, and again, no complaints there. Next comes the food. Like so many, we had looked online to see what was available and had chosen our meal, when we arrived, very little of it was available and for a 'steakhouse' the choice was rather lacking. We looked at the "menu" - which was a small piece of white paper with some items on it and appeared to have seen better days. For an establishment as outwardly beautiful as this, it was a big let-down to be handed a flyer - rather ruins the atmosphere in my opinion. We both got a rump with all the trimmings and a calamari starter - no complaints there, food was lovely, steak was cooked to perfection and the trimmings were delicious even if the peppercorn was slightly too peppery for my tastes. We had a great time there listening to the slow atmospheric music which was being played - if rather loudly and paid for our meal. The meal came to around £80, which was more than reasonable for what we had. My last point of contention is with the server's behaviour as we left. We started to make our way over to the door to leave, and she barely looked up from her phone to say goodbye - found this rather rude considering there was no-one else in the restaurant. All in all, a rather mixed experience. I would go again, but I would sit in a different place and lower my expectations going forwards. Special mention to the chef however, as he was lovely and came to see how our food was - you don't see that nowadays and it was a welcome addition to our experience. Probably see you again on Valentine's Day The Hide, even if the experience wasn't an overwhelmingly positive one, I believe you can do better and I look forward to seeing you try.
