Geek Retreat York in York

I took my partner to the York store on our first date. We were made to feel very welcome, and were able to snuggle up in comfort to play some board games and have refreshments. Happy to say we're still going strong, so thanks to all the team for creating a great experience.

Excellent, inclusive space where you can go with the kids or friends and enjoy a variety of different clubs or just play a game while you have a coffee. Also a shop selling games, cards and rpg items. Staff are really friendly and welcome everyone. Their Instagram also has loads of great information about events and offers. Well worth checking out. Me and my children love it!

Such a lovely environment. Staff were enormously friendly and helpful. Unfortunately it was very busy as we visited on a Friday night so we didn’t get to stay but it was lovely to see such a bustling and inclusive space. We will definitely be returning :)

Great place to have food and drink as well as buying and playing games! Going to Friday Night Magic is good, they also run events for other game systems such as D&D and Pokemon.

They closed early without any warning (apparently they don’t want to be open after the races? Not sure the reasoning behind that). They closed 90 minutes early, and we travelled an hour to come and spend our money here. Could see by their faces they didn’t care at all, they just watched us from inside the shop and then stuck their heads out to tell us tough luck. You could see the guy didn’t care at all, is this how a business runs?

Absolutely incredible team of staff, always so welcoming and helpful, really grateful to have such a wonderful safe space to hang out with! Brilliant food too, definitely will be visiting again

Small but a great meeting place for NEEEEEEERDS Like me

Just got there at opening time last Monday place looks nice bit of an steep ramp entry lots of space to geek out at food menu looks brilliant but on this short visit I did not have time to try eny think staff was friendly and showed me some of the dungeon and dungeon items that they had good place for all ages

I loved how they are closed but full of staff yet don't have anything saying they are not open anywhere which meant visitors to the city werw wasting their time

A great place to just 'be' in York. Plenty of boardgames to play and a good menu with plenty of Vegan options. Welcoming and comfortable with lovely staff.

Best Geek Retreat I've visited. Knowledgeable, affable owner and staff; brilliant selection of stock (including Paramount War!); serviceable space (eight tables) — we'd be here every day if we lived locally!

Lovely few hours spent playing games and talking Pokemon. Robyn was the staff member in charge while we were there and she was just lovely. Taking time to chat with my little boy and suggesting games to play even though she was clearly rushed off her feet! We have been to the Liverpool geek retreat and York was just as welcoming! Thank you very much!

We received such friendly and inclusive welcome yesterday, my 9 year old was so nervous about coming along as a complete beginner but within minutes he’d been joined by a group of players who were happy to play and chat all things Pokemon. He had a great time, and a great offering of vegan milkshakes for our dairy free friend too!

Great board game cafe, plenty of games, good food & big portions

The staff are so friendly and welcoming, they have agreat selsection of games you can sit in and play. The food is really customisable and so are the drinks, its wasnt fresh ground coffee but it was honestly nicer than some artisanal coffee brands I've tried. The atmostphere is cosy and relaxed, but the staff were up for a laugh and you can tell they genuinely enjoy working there. If I could convince you to go with one thing... their chicken nuggets were nicer and cheaper than mcdonalds!

Varying learning disabilities here and have always been treated with respect and patience where needed. Learnt a lot from both customers and Staff. Always willing to get in stock where possible and good overall food service. Been coming for over a year now so felt good time to actually leave a review.

Came here with young carers, left my child and returned and she only had praise she enjoyed her time

I have been coming here for about a year and I'm always treated with respect and the staff are lovely, great service and great food, amazing events and just a positive environment to be in!!! It is remarkable to have staff who respect and relate to my disability (autism) I feel welcomed and appreciated 😁😁😁

Wonderful games shop with amazingly atmosphere! All the staff are super queer friendly and all the staff have zero tolerance to any kind of bigoted nonsense, in case that was a concern :)

Great geek retreat very similar to the other branches I've been to feel much more like a place to stop and play games rather than a store front As a result you have an incredibly friendly and welcoming team working there with lots of gaming tables and space to play, this is at the cost though of range and there wasn't all that much in the way of product especially for me regards to magic the gathering beyond the booster packs Nonetheless I would tell people to stop by as it is a nice spot!

I passed by by chance, but unfortunately I had already eaten. It’s such an interesting store. I’ll definitely try it next time. It seems to have board games and various Pokemon dolls.

What a nice place. Coffee shop/cafe on site and tables for playing games. Only in York for a few days, but popped in to check out the scene. Met Rob, who is one of the nicest, most welcoming people I've ever met. Sound like a great scene and might pop back in for DnD nights! (Tues,Wed)

Real gem of a find. Very reasonably priced. Really friendly staff who were very informative about our questions on York. Also went that extra mile when I asked if they could do a regular chocolate milkshake rather than the fancy ones on their menu with lots of choc bars and sweets in them! Would recommend to Geeks and non geeks alike 😁

We hired the back room for a birthday boardgame party and the team were absolutely brilliant. Robb pulled out all the stops providing us with delicious pre-booked food and the team kept us going with drinks including 'secret' milkshake flavours! It was boiling hot outside but the air con was nice and cool. We had an amazing time and both I and the person whose birthday it was were so grateful to everyone at GR for making their day special. Organising was also stress-free with good communication and everything was fantastic value for money. Thanks so much, we'll be back!

Had a brilliant time here! It's a great place to play games and chill out! The staff were very helpful and friendly. My son was invited to play with some regular customers while I chilled out with a coffee and a very tasty bite to eat!

What a fantastic store! My two sons are mad on pokemon trading cards, so took them to Geek Retreat York To see what they had. Ben (the proprietor) did a great job looking after them and helped them find exactly what they were after (including a really rare mega charizard ex). Very family friendly and dog friendly... Aubrey (our slightly nuts spaniel) loved meeting everyone in the store. Cannot recommend this place highly enough! Thanks so much! We will be back in soon!

I come for the Pokemon TCG night (every monday)... I stay for the amazingly fun and friendly staff 👍 (aswell as merchandise and food of course) well worth a look in for table top games.

This place was a proper oasis during Saturday night city chaos and my husband and I had a great time. They had vegan nachos and vegan soy-free milkshakes. Everyone was super friendly and they had a good choice of games to play.

As a black trans woman and a furry I felt very welcome and happy to express myself in store 😊 I encourage any furry or lgbtq+ to pop in and have a good time

Such a wonderful, friendly, inclusive space! My other half and I had the most wonderful time chatting about geeky things and we have made this place a top priority for when we come back to York!

A great geeky home from home, you have to go in and try it. A very family friendly place and welcoming place for everyone. I loved popping in and chatting with the friendly staff and other customers and enjoyed playing games I love with people who also share the same passion for all things geeky. I really felt at ease and enjoyed meeting new people and playing games in person again.

Just opened, but the layout is really nice and easy to navigate, plenty of tables for play without feeling crowded, and a good selection of free-to-play games. The food is decent (but more of a supplement than a main attraction), and the milkshakes are delicious. Looking forward to visiting again!
