Gastrono-me in St Edmundsbury

Very poor, where to start. slow service waitresses with lack of experience, had to chase up coffees and then had to get someone's attention to order more drinks. Builders breakfast basic and lukewarm at best serviced on a plate and then a bowl? This would be easier both to serve and to eat on a plate, the waitress nearly dropped it on the table as it was heavy. No management figure present with no attention to detail. With so many options in Bury S Edmunds I will not be returning, reading other comments I don't think this place is very popular it seems. My advise spend your money elsewhere

I AM NOT A MOANER ‘ PROMISE’ 🙄 The café has a lovely atmosphere, and the service was good. However, I was very surprised by the cost of our simple order—two coffees and a piece of toasted banana bread, beautifully presented, which came to £23.57 (including a discretionary £2.62 service charge). My friend and I nearly choked when the bill came!!! While I understand that prices may vary, I wasn’t expecting the banana bread to cost nearly £14, which you could easily pay for a main course in many restaurants. It would have been nice to have been made aware of this beforehand, as I feel it’s a little steep for what we ordered. This cafe doesn’t serve a cake selection but the lovely waiter suggested this banana bread! The café is charming, but I believe a review of the pricing for such items would make the experience more accessible for a wider range of customers. I do hope this feedback is helpful for future pricing considerations. And who wants to pay a 12.5% service charge when you pop out for a cuppa and cake with a friend!!! CHECK THE COST BEFORE YOU ORDER 😳

We visited for the dine and karaoke package on Saturday 21st September for the late session, as a group of eight friends, most of which hadn’t been here before. Started on the 2-4-1 cocktails, which although were quite small measures, tasted great. We all had two courses as part of the package and were all impressed with the food, the sticky toffee pudding was massive, which pleased the person that ordered it. Then we headed downstairs for the karaoke. What a fantastic experience. Our private bar person was fantastic, and she really made our night more enjoyable. Good choice of drinks/cocktails for us down there, and loads of great songs available. A few more inflatable toys would have been a great addition to the one we had for the photos, but a thoroughly enjoyable experience right up until closing time. We are looking at dates already to come back and do this again.

Arrived for an all day brunch. The GF options were extremely limited but the hash sounded nice… went to place the order and they were out of hash… on an all day menu at 12 noon!! Selected the only other Gf option that wasn’t salad, a burger at £14. It arrived lonely on a plate and definitely not want worth the money. No side salad or chips. Not a meal. I wasn’t asked when ordering if I wanted a side with it so assumed for the price it came with one. Partners meal was also decidedly average.

Not great experience!. Staff not over attentive. 2 of us ordered chicken Souvlaki, 2 pieces of chicken in each. Bao buns, 3 prawns!, well overpriced. Not impressed.

Popped in for some lunch at around 11.50am on a Friday, staff were friendly and welcoming. It was clean and airy, just a nice environment really. Food and drink order was swiftly taken and drinks were served within 5 minutes and food came within 10. The food was around £15 each and the portions were big (see pic). My daughter had a pancake which was burnt on the underside but they recooked in it straight away with no problems. All in all it was a good visit and we will return :)x

We dropped in for our wedding anniversary. The staff were really friendly and helpful, especially with my allergies. They were quiet and the service was slowish but, we didn’t mind, it was nice to have a rest in between courses. We sat with the open window which was like eating alfresco, relaxed atmosphere and decor and good for people watching. I had the skewer which was ok, chicken was a bit dry but tasted alright. My husband had a pasta dish and garlic bread, which he enjoyed very much. Sticky toffee pudding to finish off was absolutely delicious.

Although the service was friendly and attentive, the food was abysmal. Our chicken skewers consisted of three small pieces of meat, the fries were limp and cold and the vegetables uninspiring. It was rather likely something that might have been thrown together from random ingredients from the back or the fridge on a miserable Tuesday evening.

Enjoyed our breakfast experience today, we took our dog with us too. Staff were accommodating, friendly and our food was served hot and quickly. My young daughters breakfast was gone in minutes and she said it was “really good”! We were also provided our own dog water bowl and treat to have by the table side.

Party of 9 including young children. We were told we could have the table for 90mins which seemed fair but drinks took an age to arrive, then our breakfast took a ridiculous time to arrive. Several of our meals were cold. Mine too cold to contemplate eating, but our 90mins was nearly up and our parking due up soon so I chose to go without. Offered a refund and would we like coffee?.. I did, but again it took a crazy time to arrive and our parking was up. Disappointed as we'd gone there on recommendation. Our host was embarrassed and picked up the reduced bill Ella. Ella knew the menu. Was friendly, informative about allergens, helpful. And then apologetic. We tipped her because she deserved it. Management need to recognise her... or promote her? Maybe she could sort it out? ?

On arrival, the place wasn’t that busy, although there were a few parties of six or more look like Christmas parties. We were seated as a three next to a table with two people on, and the waiter gave us drinks menu, to which we ordered drinks and food by the time he came back. The table next to us called the waiter over, and they left looked like their food hadn’t came. This should’ve been a warning to us as over an hour later our food had not turned up. We ask politely twice where it was eventually we were told that we would put ahead of a table of six who were in the restaurant long time ahead of us, and still not been served their food. It clearly looked like the kitchen was struggling or understaffed, but the restaurant continued to let people in and Seat people they should have at this point of struggling stopped putting more and more clients infood was very mediocre and I would never go back although comfort the serving stuff only doing their job. It looked like the kitchen was failing.

Looking for lunch in Bury, saw all the chain stuff and thought, hmm this looks different. Yes it's burgers, but they were excellent. My partners brunch burger was superb as was my veggie one. Could have been hotter, but that's me. The Vietnamese chips were tremendous. Service very good, too

Very poor service and lack of leadership from management. Meals were pre ordered yet took over an hour for starters to arrive. Mains from another table were mistakenly delivered an hour after starters, this held things up for a further 20 mins. Christmas Loaded fries visually looked disgusting and over seasoned. Overall a very underwhelming and dissapointing experience. The restaurant was not particularly busy or seemed to lack staff so there really is no excuse for the poor service provided that evening.

This restaurant is described as casual - for us a bit too casual! I know it is difficult to get staff these days so I guess allowances have to be made. Service from one of the two servers was attentive, but the other young girl seemed more intent on going round with a duster and wiping the lights and banister than serving - very surprised when we called her over and asked her for our second course having waited patiently for 15 minutes. Foodwise the first course was tasty and the only one of two allowed from the new Ski Food menu - which attracted us into the restaurant. (Apparently it is for larger groups for xmas only.) The cheesey potato starter was delicious. My husband then ordered macaroni cheese which turned up completely crispy and dry - looked like it had been sitting around for days and warmed up. This was cheerfully changed for another one - which he said was 'average'. I had the "New" Korean wrap, but nobody thought about presentation. It arrived wrapped in silver foil, which I had to peel off, but of course it was hot to touch and still left bits of foil underneath that needed to be picked out - lest I eat it with my food! But then - underneath that there was a layer of paper which of course disintegrated and had to be picked out too. It should have been served on a proper plate (not a thin foil tray) ready to eat. Again the flavour was okay, but heavy on the pulled pork and of course a 'heated up' flavour. I feel that Gem and Mike who enthusiastically started this restaurant have lost interest in their restaurant. Overall it has a 'studenty' feel and everything is preprepared and heated up. Disappointing.

Booked a table for 6.45 for 5 people. We were seated right where the food is served so had a constant ding from the dinner bell. Not a very nice part of the restaurant. Prompt drinks to be fair. Prices outrageous. £14 for a burger on its own so you had to buy chips on top. Burger nice , but not worth that money. Pasta nice nothing special. I ordered a salad by mistake a Chipotle tex mex dish. It was foul. A big plate of lettuce leaves hardly any chicken, that didn't taste like Chipotle, because it had so much smelly cheese on it it was awful. I didn't eat and no one else in my party did either. They all didn't like it. No one asked if anything was OK until we had finished, and then had the cheek to add £20 service charge which my husband never noticed, because there is no way I would have paid that . Literally £120 for 5 overpriced main and 5 drinks. I will never go back very disappointed as this was for my sons birthday.

When my wife and I turned up at about 1130am today November 4th 2023 , the establishment was not full and we were shown to a seat immediately. After ordering and receiving our drinks our order was taken for two souvlakis , we waited and waited , by nearly an hour other couples who had arrived much later were being served . By now the time we had allotted for the meal was fast running out so we told the staff we could not wait any longer . We believe we overheard staff discussing that “ the food order had not gone through “ . We had to pay for the two drinks we had had , no one said that the food would arrive very soon suggesting that our belief that staff had bot actually processed our order was correct. I wanted to give no stars as we had no food ! But that is not allowed . I would say that at the time the restaurant was not full and this should not have happened .

Have visited three times. Each time service was strained. First time we asked really kindly if the music could be turned down a little and it was turned up. We were really put off by the warnings on the breakfast menu to not ask for any changes at all as each dish is perfectly thought out and will fall apart if you ask for no mushrooms. That generally leaves a bad taste. Second and third time, there was definitely a big improvement on the first (I only went back because of a big party held there) we really struggled to get eye contact with the staff, you know the situation, waitress walks right past your flailing arms 'excusssssee me' as if she's wearing blinkers. (In a mostly empty restaurant no less) Not much use offering refill sodas if you act like you've had customer-avoidance training. It's a shame as the attitude to customers really lets them down as these people KNOW good flavours. The Souvlaki just has to have be done by an authentic greek person? and who ever would have known a korrito would be so unbelievably delicious and the flavours work so well, honestly tastier than stuff we've had in Korea. (has defeated me both times it's so generous). T

As a group of 8 we were told we had to pre-order for brunch - it’s brunch not a three course meal and it did feel like some of the dishes weren’t entirely freshly prepared. The choices are all a bit quirky and many people had niggles - loads of chilli on some dishes, hardly any syrup on pancakes etc (and then charged for a tiny pot of extra syrup or sauces). Everything seemed to work around minimising ingredient costs and maximising up sell. Very pretty but still £12 for a couple of pieces of fried bread. Staff were incredible - everyone got an individual bill so no how to split it debates. Clean and comfortable too. But nothing really makes up for the food not being very tasty or good value.

Great Dine and Diva night. Food was delicious and plentiful, Carla and her team were fantastic and the icing on the cake was the private karaoke room downstairs, excellent set up. Could do with Aircon on a hot night but the fans were good. Would recommend to anyone who wants a fun night. Thank you

Tasty and imaginative breakfasts which are well presented. Staff were very helpful and happy to go extra mile. Nice atmosphere too.

Terrible acoustics, even though we were a middle aged couple we were sat next to a table with very young children so very noisy. Waited 50 minutes from ordering for a 1 burger and 1 tacos with a side of chips. Even then the chips came 5 minutes after the main plates. Food was very tasty and enjoyable. 12.5% so called discretionary service charge added. If it’s discretionary we should be asked if we wanted it added. We were asked whilst paying if everything was alright. I don’t think she was expecting me to say no, so when I said the wait for food was unacceptable , she just looked at me, then said I’m sorry and walked off with our payment!! Not somewhere I would recommend. A shame really because the menu choices were a bit different and food itself was lovely. Might all be better on a different day.

Been going to Gastronome for years now, mainly for breakfast/brunch but never left a review. Foods always to a high standard and staff are always friendly and accommodating. Always a top pick for me and always looking forward to my next visit.
