Tasty cakes and decent coffee but rather expensive - over £18 for 2 coffees and cakes is high even for Hove.

They charge extra for soya milk so they clearly don’t care much about sustainability and environmental stuff

Nice bakery, decent coffee and sandwiches. Service is non existent as you do everything yourself, order, wait and pick up your coffee even if you have it there. At least you don't have to clean after yourself when you go. Pricey.

One of a chain of bakeries/cafes based primarily in London and the South East. This one is in George Street in Hove conveniently close to a bus stop on one of the main routes. I have never visited the other branches of Gail's anywhere but, if they are as good as this one, I wouldn't hesitate to do so. The selection of bakery goods both sweet and savoury is very good. I had a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese and my wife had pastrami. Both delicious. These were accompanied by coffee and tea. The atmosphere in this establishment is more than pleasant especially when you consider that there is currently building work going on. The staff are very friendly and efficient. I will definitely be revisiting when I am in the area!

Friendly and welcoming staff. Table wasn't very clean and for the most expensive coffee in George St £4.10, self service lol. Overall a pleasant experience but there are more comfortable places within metres to have a coffee.

We tried sweets and tea. Both were good.

My fav. Place in George St. , lively vibes and amazing staff. Steve is brilliant at making coffee.

Love this boulangerie - how lucky you Sussexers are ! PLEASE open a branch in Plymouth near me. Your breads are probably the best in UK and fabulous selection of pastries pies and cakes. Never had a sausage roll so magnificent ! Staff are friendly welcoming and a pleasure. Only visiting Hove but will come back for sure. Keep up your very high standards 👏

Expensive for what you get. £5:for a sausage roll and my coffee was only Luke warm. Good place to hang out upstairs if you are on your own with a laptop. Not a place for families I think.

Superb rolls, quiches and cakes, if the coffee isn’t always piping hot. Good toilet, room for disabled. On a street corner. Outside and upstairs seating. The most beautiful butt in Sussex, and great staff generally. A ten minute walk to the beach. Just up from a big Tescos, while the nearby church welcomes a stall selling tasty veg

Popped in for a quick coffee and snack today with 3 crewmates after a difficult job. Delicious food and really good coffee. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. Will definitely visit again

They won’t take cash, they charge at least 30% more than is reasonable and do that ridiculous ‘can I have your name’, to buy a coffee. I only came in because I was in a hurry. Over-priced. No care for the Hove community.

Went to Gail's in Hove this morning for coffee and cakes. Decided to get a scone to take away. When I opened the bag, I noticed the scone was a bit dry. when I cut it in half it was raw!! Tried to ring the branch but no answer . Very disappointed ☹️

Nice coffee but way too pricy for me. Flat white was £3.60 and tiny. Food smells nice.

Sold me old produce. When I got it home I discovered it was too hard to eat. I don’t live close enough to the shop to return. As a bakery I would expect vigilance around expired stock.

Cashless .. which means I won’t be going back

I will start by saying the sausage roll was amazing, the coffee was good too. This review is not a reflection on the branch or staff or quality of goods. If not all on the steep side price wise, which I wouldn’t have minded if I was allowed to pay the actual cash in my pocket. Instead of being forced to use my overdraft facility by paying with card. When businesses like Gail’s go down the cashless route it damages society and devalues the pound. You should do better and do right by your customers and allow them to spend the actual tangible money they have. I’m sure I don’t need to school Gail’s in business practice but a tenner always remains a tenner. When you spend by card you constantly devalue to money by losing to card providers. It alienates a population who rely on cash as they always have done. Money is money and it should be accepted regardless. It is morally wrong and unethical to refuse to accept tender that has remained valid for thousands of years especially when purchasing food or drink items.

Dirty, and staff uninterested. Little flies flying around upstairs. Toilet was also dirty. Tables cleared by staff but not wiped down. It was not busy so that not an excuse. This is a chain and should have higher standards. Just felt like the whole place was unkempt and staff did not care. Will not come back.

A total rip off joint. Dirty tables with uncomfortable stools and chairs. The counter food prices are so tiny on each display card that you are unlikely to see them if you don't have the eyesight of a bald eagle! Cheese straws are over £3.00 each to eat in! I watched as one of the serving team kicked a storage crate into a store room with his dirty trainers. It had unpacked items in it at the time. No hygiene standards followed here apparently if the dirty unlearned tables and this guy are anything to go by. We will go elsewhere next time, George Street has plenty to.offer.

Really wasn't happy today unfortunately.. Ordered a chai latte large and coffee large. Chai latte was ridiculously sweet as if it had 8 sugars in it. My partners coffee was very strong too. I came down to say this is extremely sweet to be told by young girl that chai is sweet , it's not coffee. It's meant to be like that.. I found quite condescending as I've have been drinking chai for years. I said did you make this with syrup as it's extremely sweet maybe you put too much syrup? Older man took over and asked what's wrong, I explained and he said what do you want? Tbh I wanted a nice chai latte but asked for hot chocolate instead. I received a small hot chocolate instead of large one.. Really disappointed in customer care and service. I work in the public service and treat clients with care..

Went to Gail’s this morning 23/12 2023.I shop there regularly quite surprised at the change in staff.Not your usual cheery staff the new crowd were somewhat surely and totally cheerless. Won’t be back.

Dirty!! The upstairs floors, windowsills and tables were filthy. I went mid morning and it was not dirty and crumbs from that day it was unclean! The stairs too were full of crumbs. Tables not cleared and when they were they were not wiped down. There are plenty of other great coffee shops locally that offer much cheaper prices and good service. Don’t bother!

Had lunch for two, splitting a ham quiche and a mushroom quiche between us. I was a bit suspect at first as commercial mushroom products often have more mush than taste, but this was possibly the best quiche I have ever tasted. Full of flavour. The blueberry custard brioche was also very good, the filling was excellent but the brioche base just a little dry. Highly recommended even though a little on the costly side. Would go back without hesitation.

They close at 6 and I turned up at ten to 6. The 2 guys couldn’t have been more accommodating. Great flat white and raisin pastry. I was presented with a free cheese twist too. Great service. Thanks.

Absolutely amazing café with the most adorable staff imaginable. We went here to celebrate cinnamon bun day (Swedish tradition) but they only had two ones left. One of the staff then gave us the last two completely free of charge! We bought some coffee and hot cocoa and they even put some seats together so we could all sit down. Just lovely all together, definitely worth a visit!

This review is not a reflection of the food or the staff but generally about the business. We wanted to have a coffee with my friend on a rainy day and I took my rescue dog with me. After we sat down, the rain started pouring down really heavily, and we were asked to leave as the place isn't a dog friendly place. So we had to leave and run in the rain into another coffee shop. It's 2023. Do better Gail's. There are plenty of places around you that are dog friendly. So if you want to have a coffee with your dog, you can sit in pretty much all of the other coffee shops on George Street as well as in Symva or Real Patessiere instead. Staff was always friendly, so this isn't a blame on them but on the business

Obnoxiously rude staff. Guy putting away tables ran into me. Expensive too. Avoid.

Very poor service from (female) member of staff 24/6/23 at 12pm. Rolled her eyes at my friend and rudely told me to move aside whilst I was paying at the till. A shame because i heard other members of staff being very polite to customers.

At GBP 4 for a flat-white coffee, this s very expensive, there are better independent alternatives close by,

Can't fault the food. It's the best in the neighbourhood. This particular day, checked google for opening time (7am). Arrived but it was closed. Lady behind counter mouthed "7:30!". Fair enough...easter weekend. I was forced to wait outside in the cold. Up walks some bloke. A male employee opens the door and lets him in. Fair enough, maybe he works there. I look inside...and he's buying coffees! Okay...this isn't right. I stand up next to the door with a dumbfounded look, and a male employee comes and opens the door and the only thing he says is: "He works here." (I've said nothing) Get inside and order, only to realise...the first guy who was let in before me, wasn't even working. Soooooo he's a customer. HE'S A CUSTOMER. NOW I feel that this whole scenario just isn't right. Process before People....unless it's an employee....who isn't even working. Nice. Best part: being left out in the cold to wait. Just not cool Gails. You're better than this.

Good selection of bread and patiserie. Great cinnamon role, and we usually go for the no waste sourdough, which is good size for the price.

Unapologetically dismissive member of staff. I will not be returning, which is a shame as I've been a customer for years.

How on the earth a business won’t take cash payments!

So rude, when i innocently picked up a loaf and was basically shouted at..instead of saying "sorry madam, im afraid we cant slice that as you picked it up" he said i should have waited to be served. i wish i had told him how rude he was at the time but i was just so shocked. how about putting a sign up to advise customers of your policy instead of belittling your customers in such a rude way. i shall not be back, flourpot is 15p cheaper for a seeded sourdough and 100% more customer service focused

Warm place with large choice of pastries and sandwiches/salads, nice coffee and friendly staff. Sat upstairs, very cosy and warm.

I've had the best experience with all the staff and the coffee in Gails- it is my local from my work office and they are always welcoming and talkative. I wouldn't go anywhere else now!

I was a regular at Gails in hove, but visited recently and spent £20 on 2 coffee's and 2 pastry's... I am aware that it is overpriced but enjoyed the atmosphere, anyway my friend and I sat upstairs to do some business and spent 30 mins there until we were told upstairs was closing so we moved downstairs only to be told very rudely by a one of the waitresses that we could not sit unless we spent more money.. now may I add we had just spent £20 ! and still had a half drunken bottle of their ice tea.. I felt embarrassed in- front of the other customers as if we had just walked in and sat down without purchasing anything and I've never felt so uncomfortable in a cafe in my life.

The staff is very friendly, the food is fresh and delicious and the location is nice. It’s very close to a bus stop and you can sit outside and enjoy the sun. It’s definitely my go to café spot in Hove! Very important: You can only pay by card!

DONT GO HERE WITHOUT YOUR CARD!! NO CASH NOT ALLOWED!! I came into Hove as a local and I forgot my wallet but lucky enough I had cash on me , as I proceeded to pay the manager said no card no we cannot take cash ? But I said I left my cards at home ( we have all done this I’m sure ) I did say HIXON GREEN across the road have managed the art of excepting cash . I’m sure many people have has this problem as they go about life in this covid times ????? I would strongly Recomended other cafe close by if you don’t want to be let down if you don’t have cards. Very disappointing !! Local .

Nearly £9.00 for a quiche and a latte. Massively overpriced.

Ordered and tried to pay with cash. Told they don’t accept Cash. Slippery slope, no business will get my custom that nudges towards digital and cashless slavery .

I explained that wasn’t very hygienic yet was met with excuse she was just trying to clean it. I left leaving £9 order just paid for at counter and probably won’t return

£6 for a bagle. Looked good as a special treat..was dry and difficult to eat. I asked if they could toast it for and it was a big no. Even though the do toast. What a joke really. Never mind lesson learnt

I have COVID - Placed an order on deliveroo, called ahead and asked to change something on the order that isn’t on deliveroo app (that I usually buy when I go into the store) not only were they incredibly accommodating, they also threw in a free cookie and a get well soon message. Customer service at its finest, made my day and you should all be proud. Thanks!

Bit pricey but good lord the pastries here are exquisite. I particularly recommend the almond croissant.

I went to Gail’s for brunch and was very disappointed ☹️ There’s hardly anything on the menu and they only accept card payment-no cash! Both my dad and I chose the SOFT baked eggs, and when they arrived, they were rock hard, nothing worse! We also had tea, but they had no white sugar, and we all know brown sugar should NEVER go in tea-simply wrong! Nobody asked us how our food was, the staff were not very attentive. There were no hand towels in the toilet, which is surely something you’d check each morning before opening up, it was still early. Overall, this place is very overpriced and overrated and we left feeling ripped off and annoyed that we’d made the wrong choice for brunch as there are so many better brunch places in that area. Never again!

Gail's In Brighton and Hove City. They Do Not Except Legal Tender. They only except payment by credit card, There answer was, All the shops are Only using credit card payment methods, So then why is it every Shop/Cafe in Brighton And Hove City that I have been in Does Excepts Legal Tender, (Cash).

Overpriced for average food. Staff quite nice

Would not recommend this restaurant as they have a very limited range (not as advertised on the boards behind the counter), you can only choose what is available from the food that is available on display, do not have the flexibility to offer the menu range. The seating in the restaurant was very cramped and uncomfortable. We ordered 2 roasted cauliflower sandwiches (which were very small) and 2 americanos and was charged £19, which imo is excessive. Further, the food is not served at the table, just put on a tray for you to collect and then find a table. The whole experience was chaotic and therefore unpleasant, especially when there is much better competitors in that area. Will not go again and would not recommend this rip off place

Excellent choice of tasty breads, sandwiches, cakes and pastries. Trouble is, if you get there too late they might have run out, so popular their products are.

Nice bakery but my goodness, the hot chocolates are over-priced!!! Paid around £7.40 for two hot chocs and you only get a few sips as they are served in really small mugs. They tasted good but I felt ripped off.
