French's fish and chip shop in North Norfolk

We nearly did not go here having looked at some of the reviews, but we’re pleased we ignored them - after all you can’t go to the coast and not have fish and chips. We ate inside at 7pm, had 2 x standard cod & chips with mushy peas for about £26. The fish was beautiful. Good size and a nice crispy batter. The chips were fine, as were the mushy peas. Nothing to complain about from us.

Don’t know how this place was voted the “best” it was very average in my opinion.there are way better places in Norfolk and way better prices. All fish is frozen , it says on a sign on the wall, it’s all tail ends too so the cheapest cut of fish, more batter than fish. Dissapointing really as was expecting lovely fresh thick cuts of fish. Will give them a wide berth next visit .

Really tasty food, organised staff and a short wait as the fish was cooked fresh. Perfect sized portions - we ordered small fish each and a regular chips to share between 2 and that was enough.

You expect to pay a lot for fish and chips by the sea for obvious reasons.. the novelty, tourism, and freshness. This chippy deserves every penny (which isn’t anymore, if not less) than the local chips back in Cambridgeshire. Fresh fish and lots of it, not swimming in grease. Crispy yet fluffy chips. Battered sausage without leaving that line of oil down your throat. Great value, great taste, friendly staff, and get to eat whilst watching the working boats coming in from the sea. Lovely.

Freshly cooked fish and chips, very tasty, would definitely recommend. Easy wheelchair access. Room in to eat but we sat watching the view opposite

Have used this chippy for many years , it was always very good quality and the best in the area . Last 2 visits were awful, the fish was small ,dry and chewy .

Always seems to be a massive queue here and for very good reason. If you do find yourself at the back of said collosal queue and contemplating going elsewhere, don't. The quality of food here is superb, easily up there with the best fish & chips i have ever had and certainly well worth the wait. I have a lot of respect for the staff here also, they don't dither or mess around and they regularly make easy work of very long queues with speed and efficiency. 👍

I don’t know how this is so highly rated because the fish we had was like the bottom of a shoe , mostly horrible chewy batter , overcooked fish and for £11.50 the fish portion was small . Chips were fine but I wouldn’t go back .

💩 chippy it's gone to pot to what it used to be Wentworth Tucker at high prices I was expecting to see Joan Ferguson work in there as the FREAK would be at home in there so avoid this place ok!

Top notch fish and chips! Chosen on first visit to area due to Google reviews - the reviews are correct, this is the place to come. Fish and chips as good as you will find anywhere in the UK. Fish was thick and juicy, with a light crisp batter; chips were excellent, portion sizes hit the spot! Would repeat visit when back in the area. Strongly recommended!

Best fish and chips on East anglia

Never again! Husband ordered plaice and chips which came with roughly 3 teaspoons of actual fish , the rest being a mound of oily soaked batter which was inedible. My un-battered sausage was the size of my little finger which I had the privilege of paying £2 for. Very expensive and disappointing lunch and would not recommend.

Just to busy and staff where stressed. Fish was greasy and the small fish selected was all batter hardy any fish. Was very disappointing as we heard that they had won a national F&C competition. But was imo average.

As usual very good quality food - however there was a large order they were processing which obviously had a knock on effect without portion sizes this time - 3 small cod and chips ordered but half the qty of chips than normal.

Freshly cooked and piping hot fish and chips. Service was immaculate and enjoyed eating lunch across the road from the shop watching the boats in the quay. Simply perfect.

My wife and I recently visited Frenchs and were very disappointed. There was a long queue, which is normally a good sign of good food. However I think this queue was because the service was slow! I got to the front of the queue where a sign told me to wait until being called forward. I then waited 10 minutes while the counter staff had a good chat and joke between themselves. (I presume they were waiting for food to cook?). I ordered regular cod and chips and a pie and chips for my wife. This was then followed by another lengthy wait for the food to be ready. (Let's hope it's worth the wait!). It wasn't! Chips were okay, however I would describe my regular cod as a goujon and most of that was batter. My wife's pie was quite frankly inedible. It looks like it had been cooked twice and then left in a sweaty warmer to go nice and soggy! We left underwhelmed and hungry!!

Freshly cooked fish OK but chips were luke warm and soggy. Very disappointing. Not sure how it’s won best chippy based on our experience today. Won’t be making a special trip again.

First time here and a great find. It was recently voted best fish and chips in the UK and rightly so. Crispy golden batter on the fish, I has scampi which consisted of several pieces, about 12 I believe. Wholetail of course and very tasty. The chips were well cooked and tasty too. A lucky find.

Great fish and chips excellent value. Good size portion, really enjoyed them after a long walk to Holkham through the pine woods and back on the beach. Some space to eat inside with a great view over the Quay and the Lifeboat Horse.

I've been coming to Frenches chippie since the seventies I love ❤️ this 🐟 🐠 and 🍟 shop the food is lovely and they are better than Plattens and the now defunct chippy up Northfield as my late mum and dad loved 😍 them great 👍 food at a reasonable price unlike some of the rip off merchants elsewhere so good olde frenches

Best fish and chips in Norfolk! The fish is always cooked to order, so it’s hot and fresh, the batter isn’t too thick or sickly greasy, and the amount of meat is extremely generous for the price! Great place to pick up a meal and then sit by the sea. The shop can get rather busy, but the food is worth the long queue times! My only wish is that they’d start making their own tartare sauce, as it feels a bit sacrilegious eating such great fish with room temperature Heinz out of a squeeze packet!

Everything cooked to order but it was worth the short wait. The large haddock was very large. Quick friendly service on a busy Friday night.

Had a normal and gluten free cod and chip takeaway lunch. Offered the gluten free vinegar (kept under the counter), which was most appreciated. All cooked perfectly, could not fault anything. There are quite a few items, including a pineapple fritter that can be made gluten free on the menu.

Very expensive and nothing special , as a sign saying it came in top 20 in fish and chip shops in 2023 , how this happened I don't know ,food portions were small and definitely not value for money , very disappointed

Tried various fish and chips in Norfolk never this one,thankfully we decided to have a lunch time fish and chips here,absolutely fantastic,large thick bright white flakes of cod,light batter and chips cooked perfectly!

The best fish n chips on the Norfolk coast. This is a regular for us. We are happy to drive 80 miles because we know it's always 10/10! Be warned the regular can feed two. And during the summer weeks you can be queuing for 45 mins down the road. But it's worth it

Amazing gluten free fish and chips. I always look for gluten free eateries wherever we go on holiday so my coeliac daughter can have foods we enjoy too. You need to check the days and times they offer gluten free options as these may vary.

Went in and was served straight away for a take away. Tables were full with people Dining inside. Was nice to be able to order a small piece of fish and a small portion of chips. Food was lovely and piping hot and very tasty....

Great food, served fresh and hot. Would definitely recommend and return. Had fish and chips, plus scampi and chips. Went at 7pm on a Thursday and walked straight in and got served. At other times there may be queues especially in the summer. Fish was fresh with white meat and a crunchy crisp batter. Chips were fresh, flavoursome and quite dry, not soggy drenched with fat. Reasonably priced for portion sized, quality and location.

Called in for fish and chips. Portion of chips was very small compared to the size of portion we get at our local chip shop. Although the fish as nice the chips were very bitty and crispy.

Absolutely delicious haddock and chips with crispy batter straight out of the frier. We ate inside because it was dark and cold outside. A very noisy family with screaming small children sat close to us which made conversation difficult. Just how the cookie crumbled on this visit. We would definitely return to buy more fish and chips which we highly recommend.

We have been before and the food was lovely, we had fish and chips yesterday and we were very disappointed the chips were all bits and hard and the batter on the fish was just a flat thin layer. Definitely wasn't worth the money, will not be rushing back for more.

Don’t be first in the queue when they open. We were today, seems like the oil wasn’t hot enough when they opened. Batter was greasy and chips were mushy. I asked if they could crisp up the chips a bit more and they said “no” it’s as they come. Very disappointing, off our list now.

Classic fish and chippies in a lovely seaside town, one we always visit and continue to go back to Eat in cafe style of take out and sit and look at the harbour. Gets busy which says it's good!

A Must if you are in Wells and feeling hungry we sat out on the wall and ate ours overlooking the harbour.

Having heard so much about French's gluten-free fish and chips, I finally got to sample them yesterday. What a letdown! My wife and I both have to follow gluten-free diets, and we both agree that they were the worst fish and chips that we have ever had! The gluten-free batter was stodgy and, in some places, uncooked inside. Some parts of the fish also appeared uncooked. Some of the chips were hard and inedible. We both threw away over half of our order, which having spent £24 was quite annoying. So disappointing considering that we had waited so long to try them.

There are a few tables and chairs available inside the restaurant where you can eat your take out fish and chips. My husband had cod and chips and I had a portion of chips and both meals were delicious.

Tasty and fresh fish and chips in a good location. We got food and ate it outside by the sea but you can eat indoors. Good value and portions, the fish was not overcooked or dried out and the chips were very crispy. I had a small cod and chips which was a very big portion.

Despite the great reviews sadly we had a bad experience. Staff were super rude especially the lady with short hair who seemed really upset that we didn’t know what we wanted at first, no personality and sadly the food follows. Chips were really scrappy and hard and the batter was undercooked. Such a shame as we were here for our holiday and we were so looking forward to our fish and chips. It doesn’t cost a thing to smile at customers!

I am sad to say that the fish n chips here and next door are very mediocre. They're only making a living because of the whole "fish n chips by the seaside" thing. They would fail to survive outside of Wells serving this dross up at those prices. We get our fish n chips in our home town now. Far better. We'll just stick to the icecreams and cockles from now on.

Our favourite chip shop in Norfolk. All the food is wonderfully fresh. It can have a long queue on busy days but it moves quickly.

AMAZING gluten free chips, cooked in a separate fryer and with gluten free vinegar! Highly recommend! Really great value for money too!

Very large portions, one reg fish ,Chips and peas would do two people easily. Cooked to perfection, batter was lovely and you can add your own salt and vinegar. The service was swift definitely recommend.

Was quite lot of people waiting when got there but was enough staff so didn't take long at all to get served. Both the fish and chips were fresh and extremely nice. Plus was huge bit of fish and very good value for money.

I called here in May while on holiday and sampled excellent fish and chips I have been again today and they have altered all the counters, and I couldn’t pop in and out with my little well behaved dog, like I did last time . ( It was a bit like order your food and pay with card last time ) Not everyone travels in pairs and it is often I cannot get in shops to purchase items. I guess there’s lots of solo travellers who are faced with this dilemma too Reece who worked behind the counter came to my rescue and took my order which incidentally was gluten free. Well worth the wait outside for my fish and chips to be done- excellent tempura type batter too- yummy Maybe you could fix a bell to the door so unaccompanied customers could ring it and bring to your attention that someone needs serving and can’t get in the shop for whatever reason- ( maybe a disabled scooter rider) Other than that no doubt I will be calling again this year Excellent

French's is the most popular Fish & Chip shop in Wells. At weekends the queue can be seen stretching down the path and beyond the deli next door. That was the case when I last visited the chip shop last weekend. But, they run the shop like a well oiled machine and the queue was a maximum of 20 minutes to wait before getting served. The food on this occasion wasn't as nice as I've had before. The chips were a little greasy and the scampi was a bit watery too. But, on a positive note, the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and to watch them work at the speed in which they were serving was something different. I will still go to French's despite the food not being the best this time around.

Food was mostly good, scampi was slightly soggy, portion sizes are good and the staff is nice. Opposite the shop is a dock, a nice area to sit and eat

Best battered Veggie Sausages and fantastic chips

A real spot on little venue serving quality food for a reasonable price. The food was superbly cooked and so pleased with the portion size. Seeing it has won numerous awards it is no wonder why. Voted in the top 20 of the best fish and chip shops it is definitely the plaice to visit.
