Gone from the best fish and chips for the worst.Service just terrible, person serving just interested in using her phone. Fish just so greasy.I have to recommend a dish or this site doesn't work but I don't recommend anything.

The chips were so bad we could not eat them. We ordered 3 cod and chips at the cost of £30. We were so disappointed when we opened the boxes to find the chips undercooked and so hard you couldn’t chew them. Freds is supposed to be an award winning traditional fish and chip shop.

Came here for a takeaway dinner while on a short break What a pitiful excuse for a fish supper! Paid £11 for cod, chips and curry sauce Received a slither of cod with the skin left on. Despite being freshly cooked, it didn’t taste like it had been freshly caught. The accompaniments were a medium* portion of old, dry and mostly scabby chips, along with a pot of stodgy paste masquerading as sauce. The sauce at least didn’t taste bad, but there was hardly anything worth dipping in it. Maybe this place is better in high season/peak times, but this was simply grim. I’d be really surprised if any locals go here. *measly

Used to come here a lot with family but have returned after a few years and still delivers! Fantastic cod and chips with curry sauce. Reasonable sized portions & the fish is delicious! Right by the seafront so a great location.

Lovely fish and chips (although the portion size of chips has certainly reduced over the years) We’ve been coming here for many years, but today we were served by the rudest and surly girls. It totally marred our usually enjoyable experience. They were talking very negatively about customers, right in front of other customers. It was very, very busy (we had to wait 30 mins, which we understand) however right in the middle of the lunchtime rush the young girl, that was taking the orders, walked out the back to vape! The ‘smoke’ was wafting back in through the restaurant. These girls should not be put in a customer focused position. They were not mature enough to deal with the general public and projected a very negative image of Fred’s. We will go back but hopefully we won’t have to encounter those girls again.

Recently went on a day trip to Littlehampton and had a fantastic experience at Fred's. Service was slow, but we were going at peak time so it is forgiven. The food itself was rather marvelous. Bit expensive but well worth the money for that haddock and chips. Everything about it was amazing. I had curry sauce with my chips and was very nice but next time I won't but so much in. Would highly recommend.

Fish and chips were tasty. Excellent size portion which cost £10 per person. I've eaten here over the years and always found it to be lovely. There is always a queue so expect to have to wait.

Pleasantly surprised to see such a good vegan option on the menu - immediately got very excited for having the closest thing to fish and chips this vegetarian has had in 20 years and it did not disappoint. Shame about no gravy but that is the south for you! Service wasn’t great, staff were quite rude and we had to go back a few times to get the order right - if it wasn’t for the vegan offering I wouldn’t be back!

Very long wait and chips were poor - appeared stale and reheated. £5 for a microwaved Cornish pastie.

Went to Fred’s Fish after several years absence , bad mistake! Ordered cod & chips £10. (£7 fish £3 chips) no choice of fish . The cod was so small, very thin ,dry and several bones ! Chips about 25, were just bits & tasteless could not eat most of them but the seagulls were not fussy !! Fred’s used to be very good but no longer complete waste of money , would not return!

Crispy batter, fresh chips (i saw them bin chips that'd been there too long) They'd been super busy and ran out of mushy peas which is always an important element for me. The mrs loves the curry sauce, bit northern for me personally. Young girl on til was friendly and efficient, seems there is a good vibe between staff working as a team. We've been going for years whenever around that area, honestly you wont find a better chippy!

Need to teach the young girl who I though was a child, how to use a telephone and teach them customer service and how to speak to customers.

Delicious fish and chips. Mushy peas were gross though so won't have those again. Would be nice with a wedge of lemon too

After a pleasant day in Littlehampton we wanted to finish the day traditionally with a fish and chip supper, we decided on Fred's fish bar what a mistake,what we ordered was cod and chips three times, sausage in batter and chips, portion of chicken nuggets and four waters, although the fish was cooked to order it was dry, what was supposedly chips was shrapnel small pieces of crispy nothing, the sausages looked like and tasted as if it had been warmed up a few times, and the nuggets were dry , but the bottled water was fine, all for sixty odd quid. Do yourself favour give it a miss, the best fish and chips at the seaside you are having a laugh.

Terrible service, we waited for 1hr and 15 mins after taking our order (not including how long it took to queue )with no warning it would take that long. We were standing there in the beaming heat with so many other people who had also been waiting for ages with no acknowledgement from any member of staff, who were more interested in throwing around bottles of vinegar to each other 🤨when I said do you realise you have taken well over an hour all I got was a very sarcastic “soooorrryy” so unprofessional. What a shame we will 100% be going next door from now on! The fish and chips were ok but nothing special , my 2 year old did eat his sausage up quick but I think it was mainly because he was so hungry after waiting so long! We won’t be returning that’s for sure!

Went here last night and was very disappointed with the service I queued for 30 minute which would have ordinarily been fine but just as I got to the front of the queue they shut the whole shop and said they had ran out of chips, that would be understandable if they had come out and told us all mid queue but instead they just took orders until they completely ran out and then shut the shop with 30 people still queuing. Disgusting customer service and they clearly have no regard for people’s time as many people wasted half a hour for no reason !

We had a takeaway. Best chips around. Good sized portion, too. Staff are very friendly and helpful 👍 Situated near the harbour mouth so you could either eat in or sit on the benches looking at the river and / or take a short walk to the seaside. Perfect 👌

Really tasty fish and chips. Can get very busy (that just shows how good it is).

Just had our dinner from here tonight and the food was awful. We both got pie and chips and the pies were so hard, I don’t know how long they’d been sitting there for but I can only guess all day. For £5 a pie you expect better. Barely any sauce in the pie it was that overcooked. We also got a battered sausage which was also inedible, it was rock hard and so greasy. Revolting.Their motto is “we don’t do fast food, we do great fast food” what a joke. It was honestly disgusting and a complete waste of money

All the food tasting of old oil ,cod roe ,burger and chicken burger all cut so thin all you could taste was the old cooking oil,chips mostly small hard bits. Would I recommend No. Will I be returning No. Very disappointing as this shop displays a sign "Award Winning"

Ive had lovely fish n chips from here before. Recently, it was poor. Haddock tasted tainted,not fresh, even my cat wouldn't eat it. Chips were manky, many inedible. Such a waste of money. The girl serving was very pleasant and friendly. Speed of service excellent. Sadly food wasn't

We ordered last night three small cod and chips, after paying we had to wait about 30 minutes, the queue was of about 7-8 customers. The fish came swimming in oil, the chips were basically shards of cremated leftover chips. Overrated shop, overpriced food for what it is, the wait is incredibly long for such a simple order. Never going back again.

Was very busy so waited about 45 minutes for the for the vegan food. However, you guys need to give Jack a raise! He was amazing, very quick and efficient and was doing a lot by himself running around making sure everyone’s order was ready. He was restocking and managing a lot of the cooking stations while serving! Very talented multitasker and also stayed super calm under the pressure. Also loved the vegan options!

To be fair the food was very disappointing. My husband's fish had loads of bones in it and the chips didn't seem particularly fresh. I will not be eating there again.

We have used this place many times in the past always been the best chips in littlehampton. Went there last night orderd large chips plus other things. Very disappointed. Chips were cold small lots of crispy bits. Not good value at all. The pancake roll very greasy. And battered sausages greasy. Won’t be going back. Sorry.

Wow the best fish and chips we have eaten in a very long time. Absolutely delicious and well worth the wait, the haddock was so fresh and cooked to perfection and we were offered free ketchup, napkins and sat on the benches opposite admiring the marina views. We are from Portsmouth and this was far better than our seafront offerings. The woman serving at the counter could have been a bit happier but we would definitely return to Freds. We heard a local saying the yellow place is the best and we would highly recommend Fred's to anyone even if there is a queue.

Best fish and chips on the south coast 💪 lad behind the counter was class, tailored everything to perfection asking me everything along the way so I got the perfect meal, couldn’t have asked for more, deserves a pay rise!

Very busy at the time I visited. However, great friendly staff and appeared very hard working. Isn't the first and won't be the last time I visit!

Friendly and fast service, all fried up fresh, the cod was crispy and cooked to perfection.

Went to get food after a recommendation, it was the best fish I've had in years. Chips and Pea fritter were also top notch.

Not very busy but had to wait 25 minutes, whilst waiting someone brought there burger bag as there was no burger in the bun, and another person returned a messed up order. The batter on my fish Was dark brown and tough most of the chips were small bits, the whole lot tasted of old burnt oil. Terrible service and terrible food. Stickers on the window says award winning but I think that was probably from decades past when they cared.

Beautiful fish and chips cooked all fresh

Chips were fine, but the haddock was coated in an unusually thick and very dark brown batter, and was dry inside. Disappointing to say the least, especially since this is a local institution. One can only imagine they refried a leftover. It wasn't busy just after 1.30 pm on a Saturday. Perhaps that was the problem? Probably the worst fish and chips of my life.

Used it last month food was very good.

Fred's used to be the best fish and shop in Littlehampton not anymore . We had fish and chips today and the taste was foul .The food tasted like the batter was not fresh .

Took my wife for chips I had the children’s portion of fish because they didn’t have a small cod. The quality was poor and the chips were thin and not well cooked. There was also a taste about the oil I didn’t like.

We're Osca's fans usually but it was closed today so we gave Fred's a whirl. The cod was quite good, not exactly huge but nice batter but the chips weren't cooked enough and am not a fan of the shape of them as they're reminiscent of mass-produced oven chips. Slightly let down but they were very busy so definitely forgivable. Not sure we'll give them the benefit of the doubt next time!

If I could give this place a ZERO I certainly would. It is the most disappointing place I've ever had a takeaway from. They either put sand or grit or don't wash their potatoes..I had so much what felt like grit in my mouth. I was with a group of 7 people and all of us had the same problem. Don't understand why this place is open it's absolutely disgusting for me unless you like gritty food then I highly recommend you don't go here! I hate giving bad reviews but honestly you're better off eating somewhere with not grit or sand in your food. Really this is the absolute worst I've ever had!

Fred's has gone down hill :( fish was thin chips were hard as nails! Youngsters taking the orders couldn't cope. 30 minutes wait for cod and chips.... with about 6/7 people in queue. Shame as this use to be worth the 2 hour drive to Littlehampton alone. Fish and chips looked a lot better on the sea front.

Had Fish & Chips and curry sauce, chips were a little thin cut, Cod nice and fresh but with skin on which I'm not liking. And Curry sauce was way too runny like it was watered down should have gone to Oscars, looked a lot better.

I visited here to get some fish cake and chips to sit on the beach we also ordered chicken burger and veggie sausage. The food took long time over 30 minutes and it was not very good. Chips were tasteless and chicken burger poor. Disappointing.

Long queue is indicative of the qyality and popularity of the shopp. The fish is suoer fresh with a really nice quality batter. One of our family is Gluten intolerant, and was able to enjoy really fresh cod in a gluten free batter. We had sausages, steak pie, fish roe, pasties. All were excellent. We had 5 adults, and 2 children and our order was just over £50. We found this high quality and great value. A must visit for chippy lovers

There were quite a few people waiting for food when I got served, but no one member of staff mentioned a waiting time. My order was placed at 17.12, and my number was 30. As I waited the first number I heard called was 12, but the next few were called quite quickly so I wasn't overly worried. However I should have been. The service was so slow. As the numbers were called they kept taking orders only pausing for five minutes to 'catch up'. As orders 31, 32,33 and 34 were called, I questioned where my order was, to be told it had been called and collected. I know this was a blatant lie, as firstly what I ordered wasn't even ready until order 32 was called, as I heard the chef announce two plaice were ready. Plus the drinks I ordered with my food were still on the corner of the counter where I had left them to collect when the food was ready. Add to this, that it was a last minute decision to visit Littlehampton for a late afternoon/ early evening visit, and to enjoy fisn n chips on the beach. I demanded my money back, and then they tried to short change me. By the time this was sorted, all the other fish n chip vendors had closed as I had been waiting around an hour. So being hungry and fed up, we left Littlehampton. So a total waste of parking and fuel. This is definitely the worst place I have been for food. I think 'The Award Winni g' boadt must be about their poor service. Many people were moaning in the queue.

Lovely place to get fish and chips, sit outside on the Quay and enjoy your meal. Order the medium cod and small chips (currently £8.00). Cooked to order wait and eat. Would highly recommend this place. Perfect traditional English seaside experience....fish and chips by the sea.... a must!!

I was on holiday and found this lovely little fish and chip shop called Fred's. They have a great range of food and gluten-free options. The food was perfectly cooked, fresh, decent portions, and great value. Really excellent, highly recommend Fred's fish and chips.

The BEST gluten free cod and chips i have ever had. Really fab service, friendly staff and good price. We also had a burger and chips and chicken nuggets and chips and there was nothing left on the plates!! We will be back soon!! 😁

Lots of vegan-friendly options here! The plant based options aren't included on the main menu above the counter, they're pinned up beside the counter. I had medium chips, vegan fish, mushy peas and a pineapple fritter. They added a good amount of salt and vinegar to the fish and chips too. I couldn't fault the food at all - I definitely understand why they had a long queue at lunch time!

Best Value for money fish and chips!!! We always eat in, sauces(tartare, mayo, ketchup and of course salt and vinegar) are free! Staff are lovely too! We just keep coming back!!!

Recently visited Fred’s to eat a fish and chip supper with the family to celebrate the passing of my mum who loved to eat fish and chips. We chose Fred’s as it was her favourite place. Oh what a disappointment fish was very thin with more batter than fish and chips that were just pieces of thin potatoes rather than chunkier chips that they used to serve all cooked in rather burnt oil.we sat upstairs to eat and I honestly couldn’t understand how this establishment have received a five Star local authority rating? Certainly will not be visiting again.

Very good quality Gluten Free Fish and Chips. Batter was great, chips cooked very nicely. Only downside is it is a bit expensive and the queuing system is terrible as everyone blocks the pavement.

I have been coming to Fred’s for years and have noticed a significant deterioration in the quality of the food and the level of service recently. The meal today was almost inedible. Overcooked, crispy chips, which were oozing with bad tasting oil. The fish was tough and the batter was dry. It is concerning that they did not recognise (or care) that the food looked so unappetising on the plate. To their credit, when we expressed our dissatisfaction about the meal to a member of staff, he offered to replace the chips. When we declined this offer, he refunded the price of the chips. So disappointing that one of the best fish and chip shops in the area has been allowed to reach such a low standard.

Chip Portions have shrunk but price hasn't. Now putting chips in a box so you only get a layer of chips, prefer mine wrapped than trying to go posh.

Delicious, locally caught fish and chip shop. Very allergen aware. Have vegan and gluten free menus using separate friers every day. Gluten free battter available and onion vinegar offered when you request gluten free. Coeliac friendly. I am Coeliac and feel confident eating here. A little gem of a place. Thank you Fred's

Massive portion of chips this time and a delicious piece of cod.

We got chips here and sat in the car to eat them. My good God: the very best chips we have ever had. We would have sat in but they don't allow dogs inside. Regardless, amazing chips. Vegan options are very welcome and available. We had the curry sauce with our chips.

Decent fish and chips, fair price, staff extremely professional and hard working. Stayed open well after closing time, rare to see these days and admirable, these guys care about service - a rarity in England these days unfortunately

Was really busy when we arrived. Our food order was taken and then given a number. I don't recall how long we waited but it wasn't a particularly long time.. Had sausage, chips and battered pineapple. Chips were really good, sausage was nice. Pineapple was nice but could have done with a sprinkling of sugar. Sat on the benches near by and ate the food. Was an enjoyable meal. Would highly recommend it. Food was reasonably priced for the offering and location - £18 for 2 large sausages, 1 large chips and 2 pineapple fritters (and 4 tins of fizzy). I didn't try but they have gluten free batter options and what looks to be a decent vegan offering too. We will definitely go back.

After being let down by shoddy mistakes at the other Fish and Chip few doors up i went and tried Fred's fish and chips .So glad I did .Lovely batter on the fish and staff were pleasant . Will buy from there from now on.

After many years of buying fish and chips from Fred's and enjoying them, I'm sorry to say that todays were the worst we have had. The fish was nearly all batter with a very thin piece of cod inside and the chips were not cooked properly.....only need this to happen once and regrettably will not go there again.

Prefer Fred's to Oscars as they always have the fish you want. Not just cod.

We love this place. Always greeted with smiles and staff are very polite and helpful. We always enjoy our food there & have no complaints about the food- the quality is great, portions are also spot on and so are their prices considering the constant raising inflation!! We are going to be going there today to get out lunch and will be taking it to eat on the beach 🌞 Thanks Fred’s for always making our trip to littlehampton so pleasurable!! 🥰

We sought Fred's out because it offered gluten free batter for the fish. When we arrived it was indeed no problem, which was great as a lot of chip shops only to gluten free at the start of the week! Anyway after a short wait, our fresh fish and chips were boxed accordingly with forks and napkins. The fish and chips were excellent. I had plaice and chips and my wife had gluten free cod and chips. The batter was lovely, the fish tender and chips well cooked and seasoned well. The young team were very professional and helpful and were doing a great job. The reviews I looked up were also good, so we fully endorse Fred's it's an excellent fish restaurant. The exterior is simple, but you will not be disappointed once you go inside we fully recommend and our thanks to the team for making our short visit complete, as we always try to have fish and chips every time we visit the seaside.

Excellent fish and chips at reasonable prices. They have a gluten free batter which is why we went there, and it was delicious. They were super busy but organised and had my order ready in the time they said. 10-15 minutes for GF fish cooked to order is pretty good.

Usually great fish n chips as but wasn't that great tonight, fish was a bit too greasy and smaller fish portions than usual.

Was looking forward to Fred’s chips but something has changed, used to be nice chunky crispy chips but the chips served were thin, tasteless and undercooked (some were raw), they were more like frozen oven undercooked French fries, very disappointing. Will try Oscar’s next time.

Absolutely abysmal chips, medium portion was tiny and barely was a single layer across the bottom of the box. The chips were stale, dry and tasted like off oil. Inedible and had to go elsewhere.

Really was looking forward to going to the coast today for Fred's fish and chips, as always go there, but what a dissapointment! Fish was so very small, and had barely a handful of chips, my 11 year old eats more then they gave out, which were dry and tasteless, chips were all hard and small. I don't think I will be returning there, again, which is such a shame!

Great little fish and chip shop. We decided to grab some chips and sit by the water and watch the sun go down. They also have gluten free batter for their fish. They also have an alternative vinegar for the chips if you wanted gluten free. I would recommend. :)

I hope this was a one off, haven’t been for while, haddock and chips was very poor as a take away, i think the fish was frozen and did not taste nice and the chips were thinner than i remember, i must of had the bottom of the serving tray before a new batch, hard and dry, i would have emailed “Freds” direct but can’t find an email on the website, i would just like to add (and this could happen eating fish probably anywhere, but just to top the day off and feel i have to say something) my daughter has a fish bone stuck in her throat is now in east surrey hospital over night and having the bone removed under general anaesthetic in the morning, i wish we had tried the cod!

anytime i go to my nans house down by the sea and we go on walks we always come to eat here i always would get the chicken nuggs.

Visited Fred's for the 1st time and now understand why there's always a queue when we've passed by before. Food cooked to order, and the cod was absolutely delicious.
