Had a couple of drinks here yesterday lunchtime with my elderly dad. We both thought what a wonderful pub! Just how a traditional pub used to be. No piped music, no gaming machines but a real log fire, beams, carpet & traditional pub furniture. A really pretty, immaculately kept proper pub where customers chat to each other. My dad is an ex publican & he absolutely loved this pub & we both wished it was where we live. We met the landlord & had a chat to him & contrary to the negative comments people have put on here about him we found him very friendly! Next time I am visiting my dad I will definitely bring him again & have a sandwich along with our drinks which is another thing dad commented on saying blimey when do you ever see a sandwich in a pub nowdays!

Out for a Sunday walk on a beautiful, dry Sunday morning. Thought it would be a lovely place to stop for a couple of drinks. Stopped abruptly at the door to be told muddy boots weren't acceptable. I had ensured I had NO mud on my boots (my partner was wearing trainers). I explained, only to be told still too muddy for them - he couldn't even see the condition of them. Not as if it is fitted out with deep-pile carpets. Was offered table service outside, by which time we were on our way to somewhere more hospitable. No wonder the pub was empty!!!!

Visited the village on an impulse, having lived and worked in the village 52 years ago, and this pub was one of my 3 locals. Had to pop in for old times sake - happy memories of why we came - pub on an incline so if car wouldn’t start, you could just roll it down the hill and let the clutch out! Immediately felt at home - whilst everything neat and tidy it seemed hardly to have changed from how I remember it. Spent a very, very pleasant hour chatting to a “regular” who could also remember those days, and attended to a wonderful bar maid (landlords daughter?). If she sees this, remember you need to check out Stella Prince on Spotify - only aged 18 but an amazing singer/songwriter. An unexpected pleasure, Heartily Recommended.

This pub is such a lovely traditional pub with a log fire and furnishings harking back to the 70s. The food is home-cooked (no boil in the bag stuff here!), the chips were excellent and the portions generous. The two rump steaks that we had were both very tender and cooked well. The master chicken was also excellent as was the liver and bacon. We finished off with a very large portion of delicious Eton mess. Prices are very reasonable, great value and the service was excellent. We will be going back!

I am in this village twice a week and in need of a regular spot to eat lunch and do some work while my daughter is with one of her tutors. Being close by and quaint looking it looked like the perfect spot. I had lunch there today and boy what a place. It will be my first and last visit. The landlord is a bit of a ‘John Cleese’ figure with some very weird ideas on what is, or is not, acceptable when it comes to food. I ordered the gammon, fried eggs and chips for £10.50. A little top heavy price for a simple pub meal but I ordered it anyway. When it came the eggs were nicely cooked and sat on a not particularly big piece of gammon. A tiny piece of red onion, a slice of tomato and a sprig of basil were to one side of the gammon together with some chunky chips. I asked the lady that brought the food (also the chef) for some vinegar and was told that they do not serve/offer vinegar. The chef was clearly the wife of the landlord and she actually said to me “my husband is a bit weird’, which I had to agree with. If you serve chips you should surely also offer vinegar? I found the chunky chips to be of a very poor quality, even by a frozen chip standard, which without even vinegar to help mask the quality a bit was not great. The small piece of gammon was a little tough but edible. Needless to say my lunch was not as enjoyable as it should have been. As I was about to leave the landlord came by and asked if everything was ok. I said it would have been more enjoyable if they served vinegar with their chips. His response was to give me his name, tell me it was his pub and “if you want vinegar then go to a fish and chip shop.” What an utterly ridiculous comment. I have now found another local pub that does not hold such ridiculous opinions. I am sure they will be happy to take my £35-£40 per week average spend......,,

Thought we would check out this pub and had read some of the mixed reviews before entering. Firstly, this is a beautiful country pub that serves people that would like a couple of friendly drinks and would like to eat really good freshly cooked food. The Sunday roast is absolutely superb. This is not a pub for a load of drunks or for people that want to go on hikes in the local hills and walk in with mud all over their boots (take a clean pair in your ruck sack I’m sure he’ll appreciate that if you pop in). It clearly reads out side no muddy boots and the landlord is not grumpy - he just wants to have a nice pub and I expect he plans to keep It like that.

We were lucky to stop for a beer at this lovely friendly pub. The landlord was exceptionally friendly and I simply don’t understand those who have written negative reviews. It’s a wee pub which serves food at a set time with a fixed number of tables. If you don’t understand the maths don’t complain about the establishment not providing you with what you want. A bit of courtesy for those walkers with muddy boots, clean or remove them and you that will be just dandy for everyone. Well worth a visit on the circular Amersham route or if you are lucky enough as a local.

My wife and I spent a weekend in Chalfont St Giles, before we arrived we did the usual research on T/A and came across this place. We thought surely it can't be as bad as the reviews state, so that became a must visit place for us as we like a bit of banter. Upon entry there was a sign outside stating No Muddy shoes which is fair enough seeing as the Gaffer owns the place and has to foot the bill for all repairs etc. Anyway we went in and had a warm welcome, I even tried ales before I bought, also had a bit of banter with a couple of locals. In my opinion this is a well run real pub with old fashioned opening hours, long may they continue and hopefully we will return.

This is by far the best pub in the area, great garden for the summer months and and welcoming open fires in the cold winter months. The decor is in keeping with the age and character of the building. The food is by far the main attraction, big portions of proper, homemade pub grub. The menu is decent, all the usual favourites and the odd special. If we plan to eat we always ring ahead and a table is set waiting for us when we arrive. The steak is one of the best I’ve had and I’m told the rump comes from the local butchers. It’s table service and there are nice little touches like a complimentary bread basket and some butter to start. The beer is well kept and always a good pint served. I’ve always found the landlord and lady to be accommodating and fair, it’s their pub and they can run it how they like.

Went here for lunch a few weeks ago. It’s probably the only traditional pub left in the village. Walked in and it was very quiet, felt like the few locals in the place stopped talking and watched as we went in. It looks a bit messy on the inside, and could do with freshening up. The food was good however, nothing fancy, just well cooked food in a home cooked style, with probably local ingredients. The landlord however, does not seem like he should be the type of person running a pub, I think he takes the traditional view that this is my house and these are my rules, if you don’t like it don’t come back. He seemed very friendly with the couple of locals who were in having a drink.

You will see, if you take the time, that there are stark contrasts in the comments listed about this pub. Many highlight the excellent food and the pleasant land lady. I, personally, can not fault these comments. A recurring theme however, is the rudeness and intolerance of the land lord. I, personally, have experienced an individual who appears to take pride in showing how clever he is when mocking those who are not his regular clients. I would advise those who are considering visiting the pub to read his responses to the many complaints that have been raised. These give a full measure of the man.

Wish we'd read the reviews beforehand, for then we would have known that walkers are not welcome at this establishment. We are a group of six walkers who had the temerity to park at the pub, intending to have lunch there after a walk in the local area. On our return to the car we were met by the landlord who went berserk saying we had no right to park there (The piece of land clearly states that it is a Fox and Hounds Car Park) and he doesn't want walkers in his pub. We would have changed our muddy boots before entering! Can't testify to the food as we went elsewhere, and unless you're immune to rudeness I'd suggest you do the same. His response will probably be that we were rude, but I promise you that we were not and can't really see what we did wrong. We do a different walk and eat at a different pub once a month and have never before encountered such hostility.

Visited for the first time recently with a pair of friends and contrary to some other reviews found the landlord and a couple of the regulars we encountered to be perfectly friendly. A friend ordered a cider and on the landlord's recommendation decided on a different one for the same price. To make the point, he came over to the table and brought a generous sampler of the cider originally ordered so we could compare the flavour. We asked if we could leave a car in the car park for a couple of hours while we checked out some other pubs in the area and this was no problem.I will say one of our number was asked to take a mobile outside whilst using it, but I don't see this as a big deal; in fact it was nice to have a break from the phones and I say that as a mobile user myself.Reasonable selection of beers and cider, nice location and nice old-skool style non-chain pub. A friend and I did a recce for a circular walk from Amersham that was featured in the Times a few weeks ago. We stopped at the Fox and Hounds for lunch. We saw the 'No muddy boots' sign, checked that our boots were clean and went in to find the pub empty except for us. We ordered and paid for food and then mentioned that we would be back in a few weeks with a small group, At this point, the landlord told us that walkers were a pain and they weren't welcome at any of the pubs in the area. If we hadn't already paid for our food, we would have left and found somewhere else. The soup and bread were good. We debated afterwards whether to go back with our friends and decided that we would. Not all walkers are awful. During the time we were there, a Saturday lunchtime, only one other person came in to have a pint.A group of four of us returned last Saturday. We removed our boots before going in and left them outside. This time the pub was quite busy. The only time the landlord cracked a smile was when he told me there'd be a long wait as there were several orders ahead of us. This meant it was quite a late lunch for us and we were the last left in the pub. We could tell the landlord was keen for us to move on so three of us went out to put our boots on while the slowest eater amongst us finished her meal. After she came out, we heard the door lock behind us.The food was good but I won't be going back. It's a shame as I live not far away and there are gorgeous walks in the area but I'd rather go somewhere that is a bit more welcoming. PS We're sorry we opened the windows to let a bee out.

Happened by the The Fox and Hounds after a long walk, a traditional looking pub both inside and out however, once through the door the landlord all but tutted at the thought of customers walking in. After begrudgingly serving us with a drink we walking into the garden and had the door slammed shut behind us. We drank up and left as soon as possible.

There are not many pubs like this left. If you like big screen televisions, music, and people shouting into their mobile phones, while the bar staff ignore the customers while they text their mates then...this is not the pub for you. However, if you prefer a more traditional country pub, then look no further. The Landlord stocks a fine selection of well kept ales from local breweries as well as a variety of real ciders. The food menu is not extensive, but it is all genuinely home cooked , the steaks are highly recommended and the chips are to die for ! No Brakes Brothers catering here.If you are looking for a proper country pub where there is no piped music, televisions or gambling machines, just good ale, food and conversation then you will have found a rare gem. But don't expect a warm welcome if you have come to talk on your mobile phone - and muddy walking boots are also taboo , mine get inspected regularly and I am a local !The menu is limited, but it is all genuinely home cooked , the chips are to die for, and the steaks are highly recommended. On a recent evening to this establishment found the service and hospitality to be disgraceful. There was no welcoming smile whatsoever (even though the place wasn't busy) and was looked at scorn and disdain as I arrived with my fiance and 8 year old son. We were meeting friends who were local here, and had eaten there before which they said was pleasant enough. On arrival our friends who had been seated were basically ordered to move (as in his words) he didn't want to see kids and put us behind the chimney. Why did he not say children are not welcome or not allowed and we would have moved on. Then the debacle of getting drinks. One would have thought getting a wine spritzer, an orange juice and a bottle of beer would easy enough. Sadly I was mistaken. Asking for a tall straight glass so that plenty of lemonade could be put in was flatly refused and was given a small wine glass with no room for ice or lemonade - but hey at least you managed to charge for that one. Just the bottle for the beer please - no not at all was the reply and proceeded to pour the entire contents into a red hot glass. Well maybe he didn't want me to get frostbite or something similar. At least my son got his orange juice okay. Whilst our friends ate, we had another round of drinks and a very similar outcome. At least he showing consistency there. Not accommodating to any of my polite queries.Unfortunately they say you never get another chance to make a first impression, but sadly we will never know. That is 2/3 hours I would never ever experience again and will never set foot in again. The landlord is rude and his behaviour idiotic and wonder how he gets repeat trade. Maybe he should learn to cook and disappear in the kitchen so he shouldn't have to deal with the public.

10 of us had a great Sunday lunch yesterday. The food was good quality (as it always is) and the atmosphere was congenial. Sue's food is locally sourced, always plentiful and very good value; she does the best bread and butter pudding! I have been going to this pub for many years and it has never disappointed. Ian is a very likeable character who has run the Fox and Hounds for a long time. The pub is always busy, which contradicts some of the nastier reviews above. Some of us remember a time when mobile phones did not exist (and, surprisingly people did manage to survive!) and welcome an environment where people are not talking into their handsets!

We have just been for our regular visit for Sunday lunch at the Fox and Hounds in Chalfont St Giles. Generally we are all too quick to complain, but rarely do we write when something is good. We have never had a bad meal there and find Ian, the Publican very helpful. Sue cooks a roast just like my Mum used to, and her puddings are pretty special too! It is an old fashioned quaint pub in the village, but we don't want to tell too many people incase they don't have room for us!P & J

I can only imagine all of the good reviews written about this awful place have been wrote by the landlord himself, the rest of the reviews regarding the uncleanliness of the place and the unfriendly landlord are spot on. You only have to look at his responses to the criticism he receives on here to get a general idea of his lovely personality. As soon as I walked into the pub I was shouted at for using a mobile phone. I've never heard anything like it, no mobile phones allowed in a pub in the 21st century. It wasn't just that though it was the way he asked or should I say shouted at me not to use it. The food looked ok but considering how grubby the place looked I thought to give it a miss. After my not so nice experience here I told a few locals about it and not one of them was surprised he has a terrible reputation in the village for his rudeness. Needless to say I would never return whilst under his ownership. I await his rather comical feedback on my review and will be the first person to wave him off when he goes out of business, obviously due to his rudeness.

If you like a nice warm traditional pub serving well cared for beer then you need to come here. I was particularly impressed that they had a local beer on as I will always go for those over the well-known brands. Last time I checked it was the only pub in Chalfont which bothered to serve ale from someone other than the nationals. Place did go quiet when we walked in but there you go - that's half the fun! If you love beer, come here.

We visited this pub on a Sunday lunch. As we entered the pub all of the locals eyed us up and down like we were aliens. When we got to the bar we were grunted at by the manager and told u don't want food do you? Lol. So we had crisps and a drink. I then witnessed a lady walker and friend trying to come into the pub only to be shouted at by the same guy that they can't come in with bootd on. From what I saw of the food we didn't miss anything. Definitely a place to avoid

Despite the dire warnings here and elsewhere, we enjoyed a thoroughly pleasant evening and an excellent meal. The Fox and Hounds is a small pub in a small village and thus inappropriate for large noisy groups, football supporters, wide-screen TV and cellphone addicts, Hooray Henries, and those who want 'music' to drown out conversation. In other words, it's quiet and relaxing and thus slightly old fashioned in the best possible sense of the term. The menu is compact with something for most tastes and the successful formula here is to stick to what they do well and what customers clearly appreciate - we certainly did. Unsophisticated, thoughtful, and well-prepared food served by pleasant people in a homely atmosphere.A nice touch was that each main course came with a small portion of four or five perfectly prepared vegetables, and the chips alone are worth the trip. Finally, we managed not to upset 'mine host' so I hope we'll be welcome back on a future visit!

So after hearing stories about the landlord I was pretty dubious when my nan said she had booked this for lunch after a memorial service.. Can honestly say the landlord was polite and welcoming took time to speak with us and did not make us feel uncomfortable in the slightest! Traditional home cooked food at a reasonable price , a open fire and a real traditional feel to the pub, I don't think banning phones is a bad thing it's not like u can't enter the pub with a phone , u just put it on silent and if u need to take or make a call simply go outside or to the bathroom! I has no issues here, I wouldn't take my kids or my dog or go there for a party it's not that kind of place , but if u want a nice quiet lunch and relax then it's perfect!

What can I say about this place? Well, all I can presume is that all the positive reviews about this place are from locals who are probably just as rude and ignorant as the Landlord!!! Coming to write this review, I am not surprised to see the Landlord feature in people's negative reviews! Our experience with the (not so) charming gentleman started as soon as we walked through the door. My friend, coming in behind me didn't shut the door properly (a very serious crime indeed) and rather than just casually ask us to shut the door, the lovely Landlord huffed very deliberately and then decided to make a big show of walking behind us and then slamming the door shut!!!With this warm welcome in mind, we should have immediately turned around and walked out, but I stupidly gave it a chance and proceeded to the bar to which the Landlord had just returned. However Mr Friendly, the Landlord wasn't finished making us feel at home. When I had the audacity to ask for a bottle of wine, rather than the glass he'd presumed I was ordering, I got a full eye roll, a shake of his head and a tut as he turned away! Bearing in mind, he hadn't poured any wine yet, so there was no wastage and really no inconvenience, but he couldn't help but show how irritated he was! Yet still he wasn't done. Being a surprisingly lovely day for March I asked my friend if she fancied sitting in the garden out the back, only to be told "There aren't any tables!", and a mumbling of something about Easter?! Who knows?! I presume they only put tables in their garden after Easter?I was then barked at to "Come over here!" when I required to pay for my bottle of wine by card; the entire transaction completed with the friendliness of a brick! Anyone would think I'd asked to pay using mud! As to the actual pub, it's pretty tired, with the dated floral carpet, etc. Is it a "traditional country pub"? Yes, but it's a bit of a time warp place. I've been to countless pubs in the surrounding area which manage to do "traditional country pub" whilst also being fresh and a welcoming, rather than old and tired. I can't comment on the food's flavour as we didn't feel like staying after our warm welcome, but what I saw coming out looked like typical home cooked "local" pub food, kind of stuff that's been on the menu, cooked exactly the same for the last 30 years (which is about how old the plates looked!). However, the food reviews on here all seem genuinely positive so I will let others be the judge of it. So there you go, if you want to be tutted at, mumbled to, have someone roll their eyes at you, huff at and generally made to feel extremely unwelcome whilst you sit there, the Fox & Hounds is the place for you!I'd love to see what happened to the Landlord if you had the temerity to take a young family in there! His head would probably explode! Fantastic....NOT!

The first thing you notice is the warm open fire and the feel of a traditional pub surrounding. The food is very good and fresh as the landlady makes it a point to buy locally every day.Prices are reasonable and service charge is left at the client discretion.Ian, the landlord gets a bit ratty if one uses his/her mobile inside the pub. This place is very popular with locals on Sunday lunch time and if you book a table make sure that you are on time to avoid upsets in the kitchen

Firstly, the landlord issue. We had no problems with mine host. He was attentive, courteous and friendly to us and had quite a good deal of banter with his regulars. And, as another reviewer put it, it’s his pub and if he doesn’t like mobile phones etc, well then it’s his call. For a Wednesday lunchtime the pub was doing a good trade with many regulars, not all of them local. We had our usual English fayre for lunch. Well cooked meals, prepared on the premises, at an amazing price. Would we come again? Yes, definitely!

Afraid I cannot comment on the food, I left as soon as I arrived! The landlord greeted me with a verbal attack! Waving his arms around and pontificating about my mobile phone which I was holding! At first I thought he was joking but he was deadly serious. He pointed at a sign on the wall saying " No Mobiles permitted!" I even apologised stating I didn't know and his reply was " That's why I 'm telling you!" Consequently I turn straight around and left. I wonder how he manages his business with out a phone? I won't be convinced he doesn't use a phone! Rude, obnoxious and agressive!
