Called in as part of a walk around the Dales... the welcome and the service were great.... bar staff were chatty whilst working...sorted our group out with a bit of racing on the TV.... the pub is in a lovely location and I can imagine sitting outside on a lovely sunny day would be magical... the F&H is one of those pubs that when you walk in you just can feel the village cozyness that only some pubs have....we didn't sample the food but I did spot what people were having and it looked good... defo call in if you are in the area....

Terrible food! We all had fish n chips! Frozen boxed cremated batter, which we all left! Grey watery unpleasant tiny fish. Chips too dry to eat. Nice lady who served us. However, later the male barman was rude to one of his customers and unpleasant to my friend! Won’t re-visit!

Let me start by saying the pub itself is a nice pub and west burton is a lovely village with the falls on it's doorstep. When we booked the table, we had to pre-order our food as they had staff shortages and there weas seven of us. Fair enough. We were surprised about how extensive the menu was. There seemed a lot of choices for a kitchen that is short staffed. So, we arrived got our seat, in a seperate section of the pub obviously geared for people who are staying in one of the rooms. The decor was not a pub decor and you did not feel part of the pub or even that you are in a pub. Everyone had starter, mains and some had pudding. I would say it's what I would call "Homely Honest Food". Absolutely no frills, you get what you ordered. It was fine and did the job. I won't go back as I believe there are better pubs in the area, but it wasn't as terrible as some people are making out!! With regards to previous reviews on the gravy. It's northern gravy. It's meant to be thick!!!!!

The food here is awful. I ordered the 'special' pizza which was anything but and 3/4 was left. My wifes steak and ale pie was OK but accompanying vegetables were cold and was served with a gravy which could best be described as 'gloopy'. I would not recommend this pub to my friends.

Stopped off here today looking for a pub lunch for 2 adults, a 2 year old and a 6 year old. Was confident that we would get a good meal and service as the vast majority of reviews on here and google are really positive. Think we must have visited on an off day. Entered the pub, and the gentleman behind the bar was clearly trying to eat his lunch and did not acknowledge us. I then asked if we could have a table for lunch, and was told to sit anywhere and order at the bar. We seated ourselves, and I then spent 5 minutes looking at the menu boards which seemed to be geared more to an evening service. The gentleman behind the bar was watching as I did this but said nothing. I then found a pile of menus on the bar - why he couldn’t have said “take a seat, the menus are here” I do not know. We then ordered two kids meals and 2 adult bbq chicken baps, along with drinks. The food and drinks were fairly priced. I then asked a member of staff if they had a high chair, and was told she didn’t think they did. A couple of minutes later she returned saying “there is a high chair at the back there” so I went and collected one, making sure I didn’t hit the bar or any other customers. As a parent, it would have been nice if she could have just brought it up to our table for us. No issues with the kids food at all, good size portions and they ate almost all of it. Our food was a bit lacklustre- I was expecting a fresh (possibly toasted) roll with chicken, melted cheese, bbq sauce, lettuce and mayo. The roll was at best supermarket quality, and the cheese was a square slice from a packet just placed on there. The chips were good though, but due to the lack of customer service and the quality of the “adult food” we won’t be visiting again.

Stayed for 4 nights visiting the Dales. Although the postal address is Leyburn its a long way from Leyburn itself. The pub itself was friendly, reasonably priced on drinks and food. The food, all home cooked could not be faulted on quality or price. My own personal view was that breakfast starting at 9am was the only drawback. We are early risers and would have preferred to be "on the road" by 8am.

After a busy day in the Dales we found ourselves looking for a pub for dinner. We were late and quite a few local pubs had stopped serving food, the Fox and Hounds included. When we asked about food, we were told that although they had stopped serving food, they could make pizzas from their menu. We opted for this and each had a drink and a pizza. The pizzas were delicious and we now know of another pub we can visit when in the Dales.

Arrived in hiking gear and asked to check in (reservation made months ago) so the barman (close relative of a Neanderthal) said I’d have to wait for ‘the lady’ so I said I’d have a pint while I wait to which he responded ‘Well, d’you want to check in or have a pint’! I last came to this pub in 2005 and the welcome hasn’t improved. It’s in a beautiful location and the building is quaint but OMG the barman seems to have mistaken ‘hospitality’ for hostility! Facilities from the 1960s, bedroom decor mid-1970s, comfy bed, clean room but freezing even with electric fire on. Dribble ‘power’ shower. Super selection of tea…..PH Tips or PG Tips. Service vaguely improved in the evening when ‘Grunt’ was too busy watching footie with his local mates as the ladies took over. Food ‘adequate’. Breakfast good unless you wanted it at a normal hour as you can only have breakfast here 0900-0930. How does this sorry excuse for a pub survive? It could and should be so much better but I guess as the only game in town in a village renowned for its beauty you just don’t need to bother. A disgrace and a negative impact on the image of Yorkshire tourism. Quite why it was so busy I have no idea.

Access to rooms via the archway is dangerous. Uneven cobbles and concrete. Looks like a storage dump for rubbish. Our room had new carpet and bedding but overall the room was scruffy. The shower was claustrophobic, no lighting and didn’t look clean. Room very run down, A4 paper with instructions stuck to walls. No breakfast menu just an chap saying what we could have, not much choice. Meal in the dining room was poor, no one asked if all was oven though 3 kitchen members were looking trough the class on the door just waiting for us to finish. Too late to order another meal as others in the part had finished. Have photos but can’t down load

We do love the Fox and Hounds. West Burton is one of our favourite villages to visit. We have stayed in a cottage up in Walden, another behind the pub but decided to stay in the pub accommodation this time. The room was lovely for the price. Spacious and clean although basic. The bed was slightly uncomfortable but we slept well. The toilet in the room upstairs made a strange loud noise so we were thankful they they didn’t flush during the night. The breakfast was very basic, seemed very dry as there was no beans. One hash brown would fill the plate a bit more too. The toast was cold and had been sat in the toast rack for a while as it was out on our table as soon as we sat down. Again the nightly rate is very cheap so wasn’t expecting extravagance. The landlord and lady behind the bar are both super friendly and have had us in stitches. The food in the evening is plentiful and tasty although (probably because of the pandemic) cut backs have been made. I love a lager and black but the pub uses Robinsons apple and blackcurrant squash for this and it’s not a great taste. I’d recommend that they use a proper cordial (Britvic etc) Other than that the pub is lovely and will be visiting again very soon

Not a very pleasant, friendly experience…… Arrived after a walk requested 2 cups of tea - was charged £7.00 ! Is that a joke for 2 tea bags and some hot water ??? When I asked if I had been charged correctly - I got a very shirty/arrogant response from the bar person……I was very unimpressed by the entire experience ! A pint and a half of alcohol £5.90 and a pot of tea for 2 £7.00 absolutely disgusting….. bar was empty when we visited……. understandable given the unfriendly welcome / service and atrocious price for a pot of tea for 2 ! . Would definitely NOT recommend - awful experience from a So called “friendly country pub” Much better places to visits in the dales ! Avoid if you want a cuppa - absolute RIP off !!

Friendly Pub with great Food We visited The Fox & Hounds on the first night of our stay in West Burton. We arrived late and headed over to the pub for a drink and a pizza. The pizzas are delicious, they also offer a takeaway service. We decided to eat here again after our first day of walking - I am so glad we did, the food was great, the menu was extensive with lots of options. We had the crab & lobster burger and the West Burton Banger - both meals were great. We came away feeling very satisfied. We were staying in a cottage not far from the fox and hounds so decided to go along one evening for a meal. At first there seemed to be a lot on the menu with a specials board. We went to the bar and ordered some drinks and asked if there was a table available for something to eat, the bar man said there were some tables just as you came in on your left. He asked us what we wanted straight away, we asked could we have a minute to look at the menu, he seemed very put out by this and kept tapping his pad repeatedly. We ordered our food and took our drinks through, we found a table, just as we sat down the waitress asked us to move as that table was already set up for breakfast the next day. We then asked what tables were available to sit at?. When our food came out it looked as if a junior chef had cooked it. The salmon was so dry and my salad consisted of two baby gem lettuce leaves, half a tomato and a slice of cucumber. The vegetable lasagne was tasteless with a few chips chucked on the plate as an after thought. The price was high for the quality of the food served up. Avoid at all costs. Go a few yards down the road for a lot better quality food and a friendlier pub.

Spotted the pub whilst exploring the area. The parking is restricted. We were firmly directed away from the dining area and made do with the comparative 'rough and tumble' of the bar. Ordering food took a bit of exploration, but drinks were quickly served. A good atmosphere and our food came quickly. I had ordered new potatoes and two out of the five were totally raw - sent them back spiked to the forks at the end to make the point. The 'boozy beef' was tasty with plenty of gravy.

We booked this place at the last moment as we wanted a nice walk in the improving weather. What a lovely, quiet village to start from. The pub was just what we like: clean, comfortable, not expensive and with good, honest food if you wanted it. The room was big enough with en-suite and a comfy bed. Coffee and tea was available but the WiFi did not seem to be at the time of our visit. The TV would have benefited from being large enough to read the program information from our bed but this is small criticism as the rest of our stay was great. A good range of decent food is on offer and breakfast was very tasty, using locally sourced food. There is parking - but it is tight if you have a large car. Many parked on the road side which seemed very quiet and safe. This is not a village that has a main road running through it. (which is why we have never seen it before probably)

We went to this pub for an evening meal. The reviews looked good from trip advisor. We ordered garlic bread as a starter between us. It was burnt round the edges and looked unappetising. The waitress put it on the table and went as quick as a flash before we could say anything. As she did not return we ate as much as we could but left the burnt edge bits. When she collected the plates she asked if it had been ok we said no it was burnt. To be fair she did offer to get another but we were put off so didnt want another. I ordered lasagne which also looked burnt. I tried it and although it was black round the edges the middle was quite tasty. The chips were frozen but ok. Small unimaginative side salad. Thank goodness for mayonnaise!. My partner had gammon and said that was alright and portion size was good. We did not have puddings as i was convinced by now the chef working tonight had the oven on far to hot and couldnt face anymore burnt food. When we went to pay they tried to charge for a drink we didnt have and nothing was knocked off for the burnt offering they called garlic bread. We paid and left but we will not be returning.

We were looking for a good place to eat that sold good food at a good price when we were camping in the area with friends. We managed to get a space even though it was busyFood was good as were the portion sizes. It's always a winner with my children if places do smaller portions of the main menu as they are often uninspired by the fayre.Would return.

This place is phenomenal. The Accommodation and Food & Drink are excellent. Staff are great and very helpful. In addition, you're in a beautiful, small village with surrounding attractions: both immediate (West Burton falls) and beyond: Aysgarth, Leyburn and Hawes. The local area is suberb allowing great walks: as long or as short as you want. In particular, the walk, by minor road and fields to and from Aysgarth Falls is excellent. And your work will never find you here.

We enjoyed our meal so much we returned the next night. The pub food menu is extensive, very reasonably priced with modern presentation. The burgers, chips and onion rings were served in a small crate, which was wonderful! The food quality was excellent, with meat from the local butchers. I had rump steak, which was incredibly tender.

We were staying in the area and popped over for dinner one Saturday night. The staff were very friendly, especially the young chap behind the bar. My steak was very nice, however the pizza my partner had was more like a frozen goodfellas. It was a bit disappointing cos the website says they are homemade and baked in a special pizza oven. It didn't seem that way to us. The pub has lots of tv's to watch sport, which is great if you want to watch the football, but not so good if you're seeking the ambiance of a Dales village pub

We stayed last week at Westholme Lodges in Aysgarth and I love this place. Have been here every year since 2013 as very friendly customers and owners are very welcoming. My son and my dog loved it. My lab Sam loved his Bacon and the first time we ever went in he got Sausages. Little tinker kept trying to get behind the bar out the back, along with my 2 and half year old to. This place is a credit to the community aswell as the owners. We recommend this place to people who have stayed at Westholme. weather family and friends and strangers looking for somewhere to go, who has not stayed in lodges before. Lush food and really reasonably priced. We were in there most days until we went home last Friday. We will be back again this year and even though its an hours drive away as we go to visit Hawes I will be passing by to stop in again.

We called in for a pint and a snack after visiting the beautiful village of West Burton. The waterfall down the road is well worth a village and a well kept secret just up the road from Haysgarth Falls. The village is beautiful and a place I would love to live in. So peaceful, so scenic. The pub was very quaint and served a great pint. The food was nice also. We sat on the village green out the front of the pub as the pub was really busy that day and there was no seating available for our large party, but the weather was fine and it only added to our experience. I took information about there rooms and cottages for rent as this is definitely a place I would like to return to.

We were staying in West Burton for a week, so we decided to give the local hostelry a try. There were four of us, and we all enjoyed our meals in the restaurant which seemed to be quite popular for a Monday night. The prices were typical pub prices. The service was excellent and served with a smile. There was just one little niggle, which is a bit of a bugbear with me, the chips were frozen. It really does let a meal down when restaurants serve frozen chips, it is always a struggle to eat them all with them being both dry and powdery. That apart I could not fault the pub, but I would order potatoes rather than chips next time.

There was a noisy night on Friday, from the room next door by a rowing couple, from Scotland, who caused a sleepless night. The following evening the same couple, who had been drinking in the bar for several hours, were involved in a rumpus, by being obnoxious to the locals, who had enjoyed a lovely day at a party in the village. The village and the locals are always friendly and down to earth, so this was, in our experience, very out of the ordinary, and will not prevent any future visits to The Fox and Hounds in West Burton.

Having stayed in the Fox & Hounds before my wife and i thought we would give it another go as we enjoyed our last visit,BIG MISTAKE we booked in on the Friday had a drink and food and went to our room early, had breakfast in the morning oh by the way breakfast is 0900 to 0930 we went for a trip around the dales and returned at 17.15 and was told that there was a b/bq somewhere in the village, at around 18.00 the people from the b/bq came into their local, one of the crowd took a complete dislike to me and my wife he made some very nasty remarks about us and HIS seat at the bar that i was sitting on, i told him he could have HIS seat just to get a bit of peace and quiet but he complained about that, after 15mins or so he moved to the other side of the bar all was great or so i thought not knowing to me he returned and punched me on the back of the head and also this ANIMAL punched my wife on the cheek, after he was ejected from the bar i spoke to the landlord and said i wanted him to call the police as i could'nt get a signal on my mobile he REFUSED saying the police would be far to busy else where, so we gave up on our food and went to our room, i spoke again to the landlord at breakfast and told him i was very unhappy about the way he handled the situation the previous evening all he said was it was very difficult to control the locals, also said that we would'nt be staying our last night he said fine and said he would just charge me for the 2 nights at £135. this guy needs to look very carefully at the way he runs this place or he wont have it much longer, just wondering why he didnt call the police? is it because it would go against his license. PLEASE be warned dont go near this place he CANT CONTROL THE LOCALS.

Solo trip two nights on motorcycle, parking available, b&b with pub evening meals. This is not the Ritz but it is super friendly, clean and tidy and meals are well priced - pub is not pretentious, locals engage in conversation - love the Theakstons Peculiar IPA & malt measures! Village is beautiful - lovely early morning views of village and hills with mist burning off, ducks in the stream and lovely waterfall just a minute walk away. Given packed lunch in lieu of missed breakfast as I needed quick escape - nice touch. Rooms are adequate with normal TV and tea/coffee facilities, I had mega comfortable double bed - no external noise noticed.

We went to West Burton to visit the Cat Pottery and when we got there we had trouble parking, as the Walkers turn up and park and most of them just wander off for hours and don't contribute to the Village well-being by donating in the Honesty Box for their Parking spot or spend in the Village shops or Pub. We nearly left but on are second drive round the Village found a parking spot and went into the Pub for Lunch. The Food was very good and so was the Beer, the pub staff made us feel at home and we had a nice chat about everyday things. the cat Pottery was nice and the man told us about the Waterfall in the Village and gave us directions to see it.

The food was tasty but the portions were so small I would rather pay a £1 more and get a plate full. The things we had would not be expensive to make. Breakfast was good first morning then we got less on the next two mornings. We laughed about it. It wasn't that there was a shortage in the kitchen as people came in from outside and ordered bacon rolls.. Just would have liked more please sir

We've visited this pub/B&B on several occasions over the years and have always been happy with their pub lunches and range of real ales. Everyone we've spoken to concerning the F&H seems to have waxed lyrical about "sales and service." This year, we had no time for a meal but did enjoy the "house speciality" ie "Nanny Pat's tea loaf and cheese." We could not visit the Yorkshire Dales without tasting this really solid and thick fruit cake covered with a similar slice of Wensleydale cheese - and the same applies in the cases of many other visitors keen to sample Granma's best. Try it, you won't be disappointed.

Disgusting food, only part warmed - and that's the so called BBQ Chicken Wings! Not sure how you can advertise as BBQ when cooked in a microwave? Chicken being one of the most dangerous foods if not cooked / heated correctly, I pointed out the potential health implications to the staff who didn't seem surprised. On top of that the Steak & Ale casserole was a pot of brown liquid with 2 squares of meat which was quite difficult to eat without a spoon........After being asked if everything was ok and us explaining the problem we were told the cook would come out, after waiting a while we were told the cook was too busy to see us so we decided to leave, we were offered a refund but that wasn't really the point as we weren't after a free meal. This pub only gets away with it because it's located in a small pretty village that's full of holiday let cottages rather than locals who obviously eat elsewhere.

Beautiful village, unfussy menu which promised some proper 'pub grub' - so we thought we'd give it a try.Upon entering the pub we went to the bar, where we were greeted with a silent stare before we explained we'd booked a table. Ordered drinks, beers were nice and a decent range, then sat down. Starters came pretty quickly, which were fine (couple of shared garlic breads and a mini seafood platter, which was tasty but breadcrumbed rather than battered). Then, the mains came even more quickly, halfway through eating our starters in fact. Upon pointing this out (through mouthfuls of food) a "well it's come out now" was mumbled at us before the plates started being set in front of us. So, finishing the starters we immediately started eating the mains (no choice). Everything was nice enough, but didn't appear to be home cooked for the most part (the pie maybe, but a dish with a shortcrust lid isn't a pie!), the fish particularly looked like a Young's fillet. Price wise, overall very reasonable given location etc.I have to say, some of the staff were very pleasant, so I don't want to sound overly harsh, but our greeting and the rudeness/abruptness we were treated with and the starter situation was such a shame - particularly as one of the party was celebrating his 40th birthday.
