The food was absolutely amazing and the wine was lovely. However, I felt a bit uncomfortable by the staff asking me to move to a specific table and not let my dog go near the table next to us (even though I never do). Like you have genuinely good food, rather don’t allow dogs and own that, than being dog friendly t&c’s with annoyed staff

Superb intimate local place with an excellent wine list and lovely food. We were a part of two with some diary restrictions for gluten and dairy and their menu had some lovely plates and gf bread that met our needs, they were also delicious, especially the oyster mushrooms, sardines and divine olives! Highly recommend, the young Spanish lady who looked after us at the bar was clearly passionate and highly knowledgeable about the wine and pairing options and super welcoming. Great experience all round, thank you for a lovely Friday eve bite team!

What a fantastic place! The food was so so good, but add the very knowledgeable and attentive staff, and it makes for a great evening. The wine selection is the best around, and it's accompanied by extensive information from the staff. It's not a low-cost experience, but it's well worth it.

We had a table at the bar for dinner. Laura, Anna, Peter and Anton helped us with the menu by explaining the dishes and sharing their favourites. They also made sure we did not over-order so that there was space left for dessert. Laura and Anna recommended great wine pairings. The atmosphere was really relaxed, yet professional. We were really impressed by the fish dishes, concluding that the monkfish is the best we’ve ever eaten: it was so soft and almost flakey. The herring and potato dish was a wild surprise that we will order again. We had a fabulous night and can’t wait to book our next visit!

Super night with friends. Unfortunately the reason it didn't get 5Stars for food was that there was a lack of choice for meat and fish on the large plates. However the choice on the small plates was excellent. Well worth a visit.

The food was lovely and varied. The place clearly values texture with every plate having multiple very delicious layers. Food highlights include the fried oyster mushrooms, Char Sui (probably the best I’ve ever had - the fig is an amazing element) and the Malt ice cream - incredible! However, what stands out most of all was the wonderful service from the Northern Irish waiter (whose name has escaped us). Impeccable in all regards, the best service we have had in Brighton, perhaps even the UK! Top Tip: Fourth and Church have an online shop where many of the wines on the menu have full tasting notes/background, useful to check out before you order.

Well what can I say. A brilliant restaurant and a delicious lunch. Our friends booked a table - they had heard great reports and decided to give it a go. We were not disappointed. There is a fixed price lunch menu for two or three courses and whilst choice not extensive there was something for everyone and everything was beautifully presented and truly delicious. It is a real find. Whilst we did not sample it, there is an extensive wine shop and the manager (I believe that was who we spoke to) has a vast knowledge of wines and indeed I understand that they have wine evenings which I hope to attend in the future. That said we did have two half carafes of wine with our meal which were very drinkable.

Lovely restaurant/ wine bistro. My husband and I chose the tasting / set menu with wine pairing. Food was really delicious, well spaced out (with a nice break offered before the cheese course) and excellently pared wines. I loved one of the wine choices so much I bought a bottle to take home! Service was impeccable, our waiter/sommelier was very knowledgeable and friendly - attentive without being too much. SUPERB IN EVERY WAY! We had the room downstairs as there were eight of us, and from the informative menu chats/emails from Anna prior to the night, to the very knowledgeable and helpful info on the night from the wine guy/front of house Jonathan, through to our incredible personal waitress Zoe, the service was second to none. We chose the pre ordered sharing menu so no decisions had to be made on the night and the food was outstanding. We were a mixed fussy group of well travelled cooks and wine drinkers who have been around the block a few times and everyone, to a man, was blown away by the seamless way the kitchen and Zoe produced the food and informed us about each dish, and although they were small sharing plates, there was a LOT of food to get through, and we did... The wine list is fabulous and we had great fun moving through it from the delicious light hearted English pink sparkling to start, right through to a sublime bottle of Australian Malbec at the end. We were made to feel so special and when we came to leave we couldn't believe how busy it was upstairs, very impressive, thank you all! 😊

Superb food and wine. I had the sea bass with apple annd asparagus and my companion had the chicken breast. Both were ingeniously dressed with sauces and accompaniments. Excellent. And the wine recommended by our lovely server (an actual grown up lady who was so sensitive to timing and nuance, very careful not to interrupt conversations, mindful of giving space for dining, the experience really shone through) was an unusual Italian white which we both really enjoyed. The server was the star of the staff: spoke to both of us equally (sometimes older men in similar roles can defer too much to the man in a party of two…and to be honest, you don’t want to have to go to the effort of trying to smash the patriarchy every time you go out for a relaxing meal), was an excellent judge of people and situations.

This is a fabulous wee restaurant. Highend quality. Delightful service too. We went for the 5 course with wine selection I think we had a drink to start and a not inexpensive double whisky or two at the end. The bill came to £140 each Inc service total £60. So top draw price. This being said you don't have to sat and drink every thing on the menu as we did ;-) In any other time I may have given it a 5 star for food too but we had only been to Etch in Hove the previous week which was stratusferricly good for food and is now my new 5 star barometer. I would recommend you go.

My daughter and I had a wonderful experience at Fourth and Church. She's a dedicated foodie living in London; cooking is her primary hobby. I live in Calgary, Canada, and count on her to research and select restaurants for us to try when I'm in London. We always spend a couple of nights at the seaside, and Brighton and Hove was the perfect getaway. We chose the seasonal set menu and were not disappointed. All the dishes were delicious and beautifully presented. The staff were attentive and professional. We chose the smoked cod's roe pani puri to start and then had the porcini and madeira parfait and pickled mushrooms on toasted focaccia. Both were outstanding. The slow cooked pork with mussel escabeche, black garlic aioli and smoked almonds almost did us in. What incredible flavours. My daughter suspected the pork was cooked sous vide, and she was right. It was so soft and decadent you could bring your grandma and she wouldn't even need her dentures. Our only complaint was the amount – two pieces of pork was too much! It was so amazing we couldn't leave any behind and had to take the cheese course back to our B&B to leave room for dessert. The gubbeen was a real treat the next day. I was worried we'd be charged for a fridge clean because this is one stinky cheese. Seriously good. The dessert was divine and very pretty. Mont Blanc of chestnut, agen prune and pedro ximinez. Yummy! The cocktails and wine were also excellent. Very highly recommend.

Located on the high street of Hove, Fourth and Church attracts passers with its charm and sophistication. We had been meaning to pay them a visit for a while and finally did last week for a date. From the moment you step in, you're greeted with an elegant but welcoming ambiance. The menu at Fourth and Church focuses on seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, each dish presents a unique blend of flavours. They offer snacks, small plates and hearty main courses. We went for a few of each as we were very excited to try everything. To snack on, we had Whipped Cod’s Roe with Old Bay Crisps (£6), Cornmeal Fried Oyster Mushrooms with Confit Garlic Cream drizzled on top (£7.5), and Iberico de Bellota (£10). The cod’s roe was creamy and paired well with the savoury crisps. The fried mushrooms were crispy and the cream was so garlicky, absolutely delicious. For our small plates, we opted for Porcini and Madeira Parfait with Pickled Mushrooms on Toasted Focaccia (£12). This was the highlight of our dinner. The parfait was creamy, the mushrooms were so flavourful and the dish was presented beautifully. We also had Hake Veronique with Fennel, Red Grape, Vermouth and Tarragon (£13). The hake was cooked perfectly and flaky. For our main course, we shared Slow Cooked Pork, Mussel Escabeche with Black Garlic Aioli and Smoked Almonds (£22). The pork was full of rich, aromatic flavors that melt in your mouth, while the mussels were slightly tangy and cut through the fattiness of the pork. Oh and I can’t go without mentioning the decadent whiskey truffles. Complementing the incredible food is an extensive wine list, carefully curated to pair seamlessly with the menu. No wonder they won “Best Wine List” in the BRAVO awards! Whether you're a wine connoisseur or a casual enjoyer (like me), the staff can help you through the selection. Thank you Peter for choosing our wines, they were delicious! Service at Fourth and Church is impeccable, with attentive staff who are passionate about providing a memorable dining experience. Peter kindly made sure that our food would come out slowly so that we could enjoy our wine with each dish and not feel rushed. We had a wonderful date at Fourth and Church. The food and wine is delicious. The service is top tier. I have no complaints at all, I’d definitely recommend it to everyone. Thanks for the invite, Anton!

For relaxed sophistication this place is superb, with elevated food and delicious carefully selected wines you really cannot go wrong. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable about their wines and will often challenge your thoughts on various regions or grapes, making a visit here both educational and enjoyable. It is clear they have a passion for the product they sell. The menu changes regularly and varies from lunch to evenings to weekends so there is never really a bad time to stop by. We used to visit most months for the evening tasting menu with wine pairing (definitely recommend this) which is exquisite but we have stopped going now owing to their awkwardness about whether they do or do not allow dogs and where and when they apply this policy. However, thats our own drama so if you’re dog free visit immediately!

This is more than just a restaurant to us, as we live locally. The staff are becoming friends and the small space dictates that there is intimacy between tables, allowing for spontaneous conversation with other diners, often to compare appreciative notes on what we are being given to eat. The occasional more engineered offering, e.g. a well-compèred exploration of sherries synchronised perfectly with a feast of compatible dishes, helps to reinforce the idea that this is indeed a local dive dependant on locals, as well as diners from London who have done their research properly. The welcome from Anna, Anton, Paul and the team is as warm as we have ever experienced and they never forget my wife's special requirements for easy-to-handle glasses and straws as she strives to enjoy everything from her wheelchair. We took my brother for dinner there as the weekend got underway and chose from the à la carte menu, essentially a shared feast: we amused our bouches initially with a croquette each as well as an oyster mushroom tempura. The croquette was in fact a fabulously spiced meaty, chewy assemblage with a remarkable tart-ish dip of something so exotic I can't remember its name. It was absolutely not the usual glutinous, potato-filled crisp-fried nothingness that the name conjures, and which I find on my plate in Belgium every time we travel there despite it apparently being some sort of national dish. The normally plastic-tasting and plastic-textured oyster mushrooms acquired true flavour and texture from the obviously special breadcrumbs and expert deep frying. The small plates which followed took us further up the ladder of quality: carefully selected Galician jamon (yes - Paul goes to check out the pigs first) with sumptuous accompaniments, a piece of perfectly cooked sweet hake with gentle sharp notes from the pickles on the side and magnificently smokey grilled hispi cabbage with spicy asides to boot. For the large plates, we chose a stone bass of substance and distinct flavour - not the same as the hake at all - and quite the most gorgeous chicken dish I think I have ever sampled. Give Fourth and Church something a bit mundane to cook and they will give it Michelin-stardom. You can't leave a meal like this, replete and half comatose from the shock of the various flavour bombs as you may already be, without a greedy curiosity about the deserts. So we chose the rhubarb and ginger Alaska and the chocolate, coffee and hazelnut tart. No contest between them - both scored round 10s in our collective assessment. Texture is so important in food these days, when you can get it (so many places pull their pork, slow-cook their lamb, or otherwise mush-ify what we eat that you might think we will be drinking all our food from straws in a few years' time): these deserts gave us crunch, creamy unctuousness and even a bit of chewiness to complement technicolour flavours. We all had something of everything: we were all bowled over by everything. A reasonably-priced and rare Grauburgunder to wash it all done following - of course - some hand chosen sherries to start. Hats off!

I applaud the effort they put into the food, wine and experience as it is often hard to find even in considerably more expensive joints.

This is one of the best restaurants in Brighton and Hove and a personal favourite of a dedicated foodie. Creative cooking from a team passionate about food. Modern style of cooking mixing a wide variety of ingredients and techniques to produces dishes that you don't find elsewhere. Front of house share the passion and can guide round a diverse and selective value based wine list. Head and shoulders above the local competition.

Overall a good experience and a lovely ambience. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable but felt quite rushed in putting dishes down. Great wine selection and decent by-the-glass options. Some of the dishes sounded great on the menu but didn’t quite come together. Good but not great.

We had a really lovely lunch based on a set menu with a fabulous variety of choices. The food was great, the service also and we were helped selecting a very pleasant wine to accompany our cheese course

Undoubtedly the best place to eat & drink in Hove. We regularly try to find places to equal Fourth & Church, but never have found anywhere worthy.

We met with friends from out of town here last Saturday and had another fantastic meal with them and the excellent staff. As usual the food was excellent and service second to none. Our friends said that they would definitely go back when they next come to Hove.

Bustling yet relaxed. Kind and enthusiastic people. Loved listening to Alexei's (sp?) super detailed explanations of the wine pairings. We'd both come off the back of a really stressful time and this was the perfect treat. Thank you so much.

This wasn’t our first visit to Fourth & Church, and there is a very good reason for this. On each occasion, the menu has been interesting (or as they say “reads well”) and the food spot on. We decided to have an aperitif ( a rather gorgeous Manhattan) while we looked at the menu. This worked a treat and got the taste buds going. After some deliberation, we were ready to order. At this point I think I should mention that the food arrived at a suitable pace. I do not eat meat, but have always found several items on the menu that I am more than happy to pick. On this occasion I had a small plate of Spiced Pineapple Glazed Chalkstream Trout and followed it with Roasted Hake. I could have a stab at describing the dishes in flowery foodie terms, but I am not that person. I will say, however, the food looked sensational and tasted fantastic. My wife’s meat dishes looked extremely appealing, but due to my dietary limitations, I will have to take her word for it that they also were delicious. We asked what would be a suitable wine and were steered in the right direction as it complemented our diverse choice of dishes. We weren’t in a rush and didn’t feel under any pressure to leave, so we decided to share a plate of cheese to round the meal off. We felt that we should have a glass of sherry, which in my opinion goes a lot better with most cheeses than port, and we asked for advice as to which sherry would be suitable. We were presented with three sherries than had been paired with the different cheeses. Some may think this sounds pretentious, but the gentleman who brought the sherry was very informed and talked us through what they were and why each should go well with its “nominated” cheese. He was bang on the money and both the drink and cheese got elevated to a higher level of deliciousness. The restaurant itself is informal, and the staff are a delight. We very much look forward to our next visit.

The absolute best jacket potato with tuna mayo. Slightly long wait but well worth it. Just what was needed after a long cycle. Care and attention given to a dish that could easily be dismissed. Staff also lovely.
