Oh dear! It's been very sad to see The Fortescue go slowly downhill, following the brutal dismissal of the previous manager, David, who had everything running like clockwork. Some of the staff remain, and they do their very best, but all of the odds are stacked against them. Apparently, The Fort is due to close shortly, as it's about to go through yet another management takeover. We were told everything is being run down; no decent beer, and limited food choices. My partner and I decided to order the dover sole special, only to be informed twenty minutes later, it's off! One starter portion of mussels remained; they were served cold, with no sauce. It was taken off the bill, after a lot of discussion. The main course dish of tiger prawns was very sad. My partner's sea bass was just ok. I was still hungry, so ordered the cheese board. It's hard to mess that up; indeed, it was varied, and a massive portion. The only redeeming feature. Good luck with the re-launch. Please try much harder; I know you can do it!

Worst mussels I’ve ever eaten. Not fresh, poorly cooked and in a soapy sauce which clearly hadn’t seen any fresh herbs. Avoid this place, there are plenty of better options

Nice looking pub, decent menu. Mistakes happen and our food order ticket wasn’t printed meaning a 50 min wait for a couple of sandwiches. Apologies received but no offer of a free drink but that was accepted against a polite suggestion from us. Food and service was average, chips quite nice.

Poor service, slow service and grumpy staff! We came for dinner with family and were really disappointed. Only one person serving in the busiest bar and drinks orders given preference over anyone wanting to order food. Pub wasn’t overly busy but we waited a long time for food to arrive, to then bro told pizza came from a different kitchen and rest of the food would be delayed! This didn’t go down well with hungry children waiting on their mains. Pizzas were nice but fish and chips were beyond deep fried. Really disappointing and if you want to eat/order quickly I’d avoid.

We have been regular visitors to the Fortescue for many years but sadly our most recent visit was a big disappointment. The staff are friendly but the food was awful. The thai monkfish curry, for many years a specialty, was a flavourless bowl of sauce filled with onions and a couple of pieces of monkfish. The prawn tagiatellie was a disaster. I hope they can return to the former quality.

Arrived just before the end of breakfast service and thankfully the chef accommodated us. Full cooked - the fort for 12 was amazing superb quality and plentiful. Omlette cooked as we liked also massive as was the bacon and egg bap. Decent coffee. Watch out a few steps in the pub but clean pub and good loos . Waitress was super friendly, welcoming snd professional. Very dog friendly inside and in the courtyard- which had sky sports with the cricket on - could of sat here all day

The hotel-pub is located near the marina. The hotel does not have its own parking, you need to park in a public parking for money. The room was small, unfortunately it was dusty and dirty. Wi-Fi is free, but the connection is very bad The bed is comfortable and the bed linen is clean. The bathroom has a shower, clean towels, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. Check in at 4 pm, check out at 10 am. You will be offered different types of breakfast to choose from. The breakfast was delicious, but we had to wait more than 20 minutes.

I would just like to say how disappointed I am with the new management team at the fort. I have been coming down here for 20 years and spent the best part of the last 2 in this pub, but as of late I refuse to spend a penny in there as they have miss treated and quite honestly shot themselves in the foot by barring one of my friends for the foreseeable future for what I would class as a honest mistake. Therefore I will not be attending this pub ever again even throughout the winter months where I know business is tough but to treat someone who is a local down here with a lack of respect is no on.

Love the Fortescue on any normal occasion! Scott - the manager has potentially the worst attitude to LOCALS I have ever come across. Given there are so few people that live in town year round and support the locals pubs - it’s pretty disappointing! Perhaps he might like to rethink the way he treats his genuinely loyal customers.

Absolutely appalling food. 4 of us for dinner, put on the smallest table possible, couldn’t be moved. Huge menus that take up the table & empty salt & pepper mills. Cheery waitress but insisted on calling everyone sweetheart & guys. I find that incredibly insulting especially when we are over 60!!! A 90 mins wait for food to arrive….cold. The pasta with crab & prawns tasted like Dolmio & why would you put crab in Mayo on the top? It was like sandwich filling? My fish looked like a frozen Findus fillet & chips cold. We asked to see manager to resolve this awful situation. He came to see us, he seemed quite aggressive at first & was rude to my husband because he had said he (my husband) had laughed…he smirked…but did resolve the situation & we didn’t pay for the worst food we’d ever eaten. NEVER AGAIN

If you’re looking for a pub in Salcombe that offers both great food and a welcoming atmosphere, this spot is a top choice. With both indoor and outdoor seating available, it caters to all preferences—whether you want to enjoy the fresh air or the cozy interior. The food here is a real standout. The mussels are exceptional, perfectly cooked and served in a flavorful broth that’s ideal for dipping the fresh bread. Another highlight is the chicken Caesar salad, which is generously portioned with tender chicken, crisp lettuce, and a deliciously creamy dressing that ties everything together. The pub itself has a warm, friendly vibe, making it a great place to relax and enjoy a meal. Whether you’re stopping by for a casual lunch or a leisurely dinner, the combination of excellent food, comfortable seating, and the charm of Salcombe makes this pub a must-visit. Highly recommended for both locals and visitors alike.

Cheerful service with a bounce and a full house led to great expectations. And these were fulfilled! The last place to order a Thai dish would be in a Devon waterfront pub, but wild and daring to the last we did. SO good! My friend said the best ever. And he has been coming here for years. Well done! Grim cider, but who would order that with Thai anyway? Sadly, me.

I had an absolutely dreadful experience at this establishment. After dining here, I contracted food poisoning. Despite my efforts to address the issue by returning the next day, the chef's response was both dismissive and unprofessional. He attempted to gaslight me, suggesting that because I was standing in front of him, my condition couldn't have been severe. He further claimed that if he had food poisoning, he would be incapacitated for at least two days. Such a lack of accountability and empathy is unacceptable. I strongly advise against visiting this place.

My husband decided to treat me for my birthday for a weekend away in salcombe he booked us a room here - room 6 which is a family room. After a 6 hour journey we were shown to our room, we left our suitcase and went downstairs to have some snacks and a drink, on returning to the room I noticed a carpet beetle, I then went on to move the bed / bedside table and there was clearly a carpet beetle infestation, that and a used ear bud and lots of pet hair, under the sofa bed my 2 year old daughter was going to be sleeping on was rubbish and soap lots of pet hair. I can deal with a little amount of negligence with the cleaning but I could not cope with the carpet beetles!! My husband went downstairs and spoke to the man in charge and he was very apologetic but informed us that there was no other rooms available. With that we had to drive home. Carpet beetles give you an awful rash and they are also hitchhikers! We didn’t get home until 3 in the morning our daughter was really upset that we were no longer “on holiday” We wasted over £100 on diesel, we weren’t reimbursed for the money we spent having snacks and drinks, overall I’m really really disappointed. Not only that but on arrival home I then had to hot wash everything in our suitcases and keep everything outside the house until we could be sure we didn’t bring any home.

The pub's had a difficult year since it became a managed house but it is slowly recovering. The drinks offer is reasonable for the area and the food offer is improving. The food is home cooked and sourced as locally as possible. The crab sandwiches were gorgeous, not cheap but worth the price given that it is fresh Salcombe crab landed a few hundred yards away and the off season lunch specials were good value and lovely (the ham egg and chips was brilliant). A more tempting and rounded menu. The evening menu was not appealing with little in the way of specials but maybe a work in progress. The bar staff are lovely and committed to the pub. We went for breakfast this morning, and took our dog Angus with us. The staff were incredibly welcoming and very friendly. There’s a decent choice of options on the breakfast menu, but I went for the large breakfast, which was large without being enormous. The...

Over the course of a week in Salcombe we ventured into “The Fort” three times. Each time was magnificent. We had a great fish finger sandwich lunch on Monday, on Wednesday night we had a hugely entertaining evening with great food and canine company. On...

Traditional cozy pub that's full of character. Shows the football and has a pool table. Dog friendly.

Rumours of this being a disappointing venue were quite wrong as the food was very good and the service attentive.

Superb evening, wonderful food and great service. It was a very busy Saturday as the rugby was on with England playing. Great atmosphere. Looks like this is one of the local’s favourites. Had the spicy pizza and it was delicious. Annie served us so well,...

Our first evening, Oct 6th, was great. Friendly, excellent service. The young lady and gentlemen serving, did so very well. Food, was very enjoyable. So we decided to return the next evening. Sadly it was a very difficult evening. Our server was an older lady,...

Very disappointed meal, felt it was not the standard that was expected. And not exactly the atmosphere I was hoping for. Having a local scream abuse at the staff was not great.

Very friendly staff who took a lot of trouble to ensure I was well catered for despite my gluten allergy. The food was very good too, with large portions. We would go again.

I went with a group of friends to the so called reggae/dub night, which we had been looking forward to for ages. But we were so disappointed, we left not long after we got there. The energy & vibe is Pure Babylon. As a lover of reggae/steppas/dub/dnb, I was left feeling so let down by the organisers, who clearly don't know what they're doing. Hail to Jah & Rastafari

Lovely friendly village pub. We stopped for a drink on way back from walk to the beach while staying at Leonards cove ( family 6 adults, 3 children, a baby, and 2 dogs) Very welcoming and dog friendly. We only stopped for refreshment and sat outside but next time would like to try the food.

We stayed in Kingwear for a week, visiting Dartmouth and the surrounding area most days. This was the best meal out we had for the whole week. Lovely friendly staff, good service and truly yummy food
