Service is dreadful (not often I do a bad review) I’m living in Spain ☀️ where service is second to none... Called in the hotel for a drink and a bite to eat. Waited ages to get anything so I opted for 2 glasses of wine, one packet of crisps and one bag of nuts OMG £27.95 way over the top. Didn’t stay for more went over the road to the Gylly beach x Whilst taking the drinks a ‘full on’ waitress came swanning around collecting glasses... Very disappointed as I enjoy the spa 💙

Other cream tea salmon, ham and egg sandwiches. Had not asked for vegetarian. Scones, jam cream nice. Cakes disappointing. 2 small chocolates. 2 cups of coffee no pot. Very disappointing not worth £20 never mind £30.

Visited this restaurant one Friday evening. Ordered our food and wine, only to told later that the wine was out of stock. My wife's starter was crab risotto, but what arrived was a rice mush. I find it hard to believe that any chef worthy of the name would have let this go out to the customer. Her main course was plaice fillets, which she found bitter to taste. My starter was pigeon breast, pan fried and the main pork belly. The pigeon was the best, but quite simple. The service was pleasant and reasonably attentive, although the wine service was slow. Overall it was a disappointing meal for £90 and we won't return given the wealth of good restaurants in Cornwall now.

The service and organisation was very poor. The birthday girls tea with 70 on it was put at the far end of the table to where she was sitting. There was huge 7 0 baloons attached to her chair. The teas were put on the tables haphazardly even though they were given details weeks in advance as to who was having what. The teas were doubled up instead of individual. It was a free for all.The tea and coffees were served 30 minutes after the food. It's in the name AFTERNOON TEA!!The teas were poor value for money at £16.50 a head. The bad service continued at the bar where getting served took 15 minutes and 20 minutes to receive change!!! I would not recommend this hotel for such an occasion.

I took my sister and friend for an afternoon Tea. It must be the most expensive sandwich I've ever had. All very plain, the prawns still had some shell on.. we never ate any of the cakes, they looked very boring. The choices was poor. I've had much better and more reasonable priced in lesser hotels. The hotel is lovely decorated but I think it's overpriced.

Been here a few times for food whilst staying at the hotel. First time a few years ago was fantastic, amazing food, lovely complementary bits and pieces that came with starters and desserts. The most recent time however we were in a different part of the restaurant with a set menu, no show of the price anywhere, not much choice at all, too many different staff coming up to your table, it was a strange quiet atmosphere and a bit awkward, my steak was lovely and tender but nothing special about any of it. Breakfast in the morning was good, some of the items were empty which was a shame but apart from that it was okay!

Our School had it’s Christmas party at the St Michael in December, we paid £38 per head so we’re looking forward to something special- how wrong can you be !!! The evening event had many different parties attending and as the evening wore on it was apparent there were too many people attending. I had the gravlax for starter, my wife had the soup, we both had the black leg turkey for our main, I had the chocolate ‘torte’ and my wife had the Christmas pudding. The starters were ‘passable’ the mains were very disappointing, the turkey was ‘pressed’ with little or no gravy so we asked if we could have some more for those who had the turkey, we ended up with half a gravy boat for 8 people, the sprouts were ‘soggy’ as they were frozen, the carrots were practically raw. The chocolate ‘Torte’ turned out to be of a ‘bombe’ shape, jellyfied, and tasteless, the Christmas pudding was floating in yellow water which supposedly was to pass as custard. Coffee was being served at 10.00 pm by one waiter, two waitresses were drifting around handing out cups and another waiter was dancing around handing out spoons. There didn’t seem to be any direction from senior staff so the impression was off staff drifting around. Overall a very disappointing evening from what we thought would be a prestigious event, needless to say there won’t be a follow up next year. This is my interpretation of the evening but there were others in our party who were equally of the same opinion.

We paid a good price for a 3 course Xmas meal with some good friends and their partners to celebrate Xmas and our sporting year. The starters were good and so was looking forward to the main course but what a disappointment it was. As we had pre-booked our meals you would have thought that the servers would have some idea of who had ordered what but with no seating plan it was a case of take your pick?! We had 3 tables and we had just 6 on our table the main came out and we were served last and so waited for the veg and waited and waited. After at least 5 of the staff had asked how we were and we replied we are still awaiting our veg no one took any ownership. At least 20 mins later after complaining our veg, which just consisted of undercooked carrots and sprouts turned up, so not really worth the wait, by which time our main was now cold, don't worry they said you can have hot gravy to warm it up! The servers insisted it was not their fault but the chefs so not good practice but he has apologied and you can have a cheese board on the house, bearing in mind we still hadn't had our dessert this didn't really meet our expectations in terms of the poor quality of service and food provided, obviously they had not made enough veg and had had to hastily cook some more, or not as the case may be! We agreed to some complimentary drinks, which we were told we had to go to the bar for, which we questioned but eventually they brought to the table but then about 10 mins later asked how we were going to pay for them....?! Had it been a smaller party and that we were trying to have an enjoyable evening and didn't want to make anymore fuss we would have refused to pay for the main as for £38 per head this was just not acceptable for a hotel that should provide a quality service and exceptional food, sadly this was far from being even close. Clearly there was far too many people for them to be able to manage, the right arm didn't know what the left arm was doing and absolutely no leadership or anyone taking any ownership to rectify any issues was evident. I'm afraid to say that we won't be coming back to the restaurant in any hurry as it was a very poor and disappointing evening, luckily our company was of a much higher standard that the food and service we received that night.

Myself and 4 friends recently chose St Michaels to have an afternoon tea and sadly we were all disappointed!! We called to book 3 times, yet when we turned up they had no booking! We were then given two tiny and very low tables which didn’t have enough space for the afternoon teas, let alone pots of tea and plates etc. The waitress seemed to really struggle with the concept that there was 5 of us so would therefore need 2 afternoon teas for 2 and one single one. The food looked and tasted nice but was overshadowed by the fact we had to ask for plates, knives and cups for our tea!

Recently went for a Xmas party night and found it VERY disappointing! Having arrived at the newly refurbished hotel, which I must admit is looking amazing, we were seated at our allocated tables. I noticed that there was no table plan and therefore couldn’t understand how they knew where people were sat and what they would be eating! The waiters/waitresses came out with various starter dishes for the six peaople sat at our table and asked who was having what.. These were delivered, eaten and enjoyed. However when the main courses came out we were given our chosen mains and was told the vegetables would come out shortly! We waited and waited, asked at least five waiters/waitress for the veg and yet we still waited! Our mains by this time had of course gone cold!! Eventually when the vegetable dishes came out we were presented with rock hard sprouts and rock hard carrots and nothing else! We called the waitress over explained we were very disappointed and that our mains were cold but she said that that was the chefs fault!! Eventually a lady who I assume was the restaurant supervisor ( I couldn’t say as she didn’t introduce herself or have a name badge on) came over and offered us a free cheese board! This was declined as we were also having desserts! We were then offered a free drink! I feel that after spending £38 per head this was a very poor service and a complete let down on what was meant to be a very enjoyable evening! A shame as the hotel is looking lovely after its recent refurbishment.

Not busy and plenty of staff on but ignored uncleared tables and paid scant attention to customers, while they chatted and relaxed behind the counter. A last minute booking as our favourite restaurants in town were fully booked. The location is good and the restaurant itself is pleasant enough. It wasn't very busy. The food for what we got was very overpriced. £70 for two without wine or coffee, including a small tip. The waiter was on a roll promoting the scallop starter at every table. They must have had a job lot of the smallest scallops I have ever seen and only three on the plate at that, this at, I think £11.95 for the privilege. The main course I had was fillet of stone bass with a risotto. This is a new marketing name for a rather unappealing, large farmed fish unrelated to sea bass. The dish was edible but not appetising. I just felt the restaurant had pared down the cost of ingredients to a minimum, while charging top whack for the dishes.

Superb presentation and winning flavours. Off to a "Flying" start. But all rapidly down hill from there on. Breakfast was a thin affair. The toaster only toasted one side. The food was a very very average not upto 4star standard or even close. The coffee was vile. Service was patchy. The dinner was a scene from Fawlty Towers... We eat a plant based diet. The Hotel restaurant had 7 days notice of this. On arrival in the restaurant we were told the vegan menu is still being printed. It took 20mins to "print"!

Fairly chaotic surface. It took FOUR attempts to get my wobbly table fixed and service generally was slow.Whilst the meat on my belly of pork was well cooked the "crackling" consisted of a piece of hard leathery skin. When mentioned to the manager her only comment was "i'll mention it to the chef" with no apology. My glass of wine was served in a small glass with the wine right up to the top. I asked for their most expensive wine so I would have it expected it to be served in a decent glass. The small glass totally spoiled the wine. When mentioned to the manager she just said "I know that it spoils the taste of the wine - we are going to get some fat bottomed glasses in the future" again no apology.

We live in Falmouth. Dined here on Saturday night. 2 of us ordered Skate Wing and side orders of skinny fries and beetroot salad. Skate wing turned out to be skate middle in both cases. Skinny fries were leathery skin on and looked like oven chips. Beetroot salad was chunks of dried up beets but the star of the show was the skate. It was dark undercooked and stank of ammonia and was completely inedible. The smell was so strong I can't understand how it wasn't detected by the chef. It was so disgusting and the rest of the food on the plate so unappealing that we decided to forego dinner and just finished our drinks paid for them and left disappointed and hungry. This review isn't to put people off going, it's to give feedback to the restaurant in the hope they can change people experience at the flying fish. On arrival at the bar I had asked for a San Miguel... I was served a carlsberg. I asked if it was the right beer and immediately the bar staff went to throw it away, which I stopped her doing as it would of been a waste. Usually a mistake is a free drink and you don't get charged. Especially the same price as a San Miguel. My friend had a San Miguel but served in a 1970's classic pint glass, where the beer doesn't perform or hold it's taste. You can't serve premium lagers at £5 a pint and say sorry we have ran out of glasses. That really is not good enough at all. When the starters arrived there was a little mix up on the order but was dealt with quickly. I had ordered calamari with sweet chilli sauce.... now I don't know about you but when I hear sweet chilli sauce I don't want a 1/4 of a teaspoons worth dotted on the plate. The dish was crying out for some sauce!! I would of asked for some but nobody came over to check if everything was ok. Drinks down, 12 people sat empty glassed and not a sign of anyone thinking oh maybe we should see if they need anything else?!? So we had to ask a waitress if we order at the bar or what? It's not as if they were under staffed either. Most of the main courses were good but a couple were overcooked, like the turbot. I had ordered a gurnard madras.... which to me would of been a curry?!? Don't get me wrong the flavours of the dish worked well and were great tasting.... but I have never seen such a small plate of food. Hardly any fish on the plate at all and it took literally around 90 seconds to finish. Not my idea of a main meal. Again I had to leave the table to go and ask for some mayonnaise for a friend as she couldn't get anyones attention. Again nobody asked if everything was ok?!? Eventually the mayonnaise arrived.... when we had pretty much finished. As it was a birthday party we had brought a cake down. I had mentioned cream a few times and shared a joke with one of the waiters making sure we could please get some cream out with the cake..... it did finally arrive on my last mouthful. Little things like that had just accumulated over the course of the evening and were starting to really get to people. I have to class it as the worst service I have ever received in Falmouth, which I don't like to say but last nights meal wasn't a pleasant experience at all. At the end of the evening again I had to get up and chase the bill up as nobody was there, they were just chatting at the bar. The bill wasn't even typed into the till! It was a pre order!! Why is this not sorted out already I thought. 10-15 minutes later we got the bill. Then the fun started.... paying for our meals was a absolute shambles and took the best part of 15 minutes! Took up most of my patience too! We were told we had to pay at reception if we wanted to pay separately, but pay for the drinks at the bar? Mine and my girlfriends meals and drinks were £46 which I had in cash so I paid and left to wait outside. The confusion and unorganised mess that followed was unbelievable. I don't know the exact conversations that went on but not being able to put a total on the table and then subtract each persons payments?!? Well I have never seen anything like it. Was a complete embarrassment for the st michaels hotel. They may serve some nice food at the flying fish and have beautiful views, but yesterday was shocking. Give the calamari some sauce, get some sort of structure with the staff, maybe a calculator too. This had scored 1/5 but in truth and sorry to say my experience was 1/10.

We had booked an afternoon champagne tea for two. We were shown to a table in the lounge by a gentleman we assumed was the restaurant manager. We passed to him a gift voucher we had been given for a champagne full afternoon tea for two. We were asked if we wanted tea or coffee with the tea, we also asked for a jug of water - this never came despite asking for it twice. The champagne didn't come either and so we asked for two glasses of fizz and were told we would have to pay as it was not included in the voucher. I asked the manager to check the voucher and he came back and said it was definitely not included. Ok, fine, so we ordered two glasses of fizz, in fact we ended up having a total of 4 glasses of fizz, (2 each). The tea arrived about 20 mins before the food, so wasn't very hot when we ate our food. We requested another pot of tea once we had finished the first one, this also took an age to arrive. There wasn't enough sandwiches and the fillings were quite poor apart from the smoked salmon which was excellent. There were a total of 4 scones, 2 plain and 2 fruit, they came with a very small pots of jam and odd looking 'clotted cream'. Now being cornish and being in a cornish hotel one would expect them to know how much jam and cream you would need to cover 8 halves of scones. We had to request more jam and cream and after a while it came. I would also like to add at this point that not once did a waiter or the manager (who showed us to the 'table') come and ask us if everything was ok. Each time we wanted anything ie., extra tea, jam, cream and fizz we had to get up and go and find someone to order it. The service was very poor. When we came to leave and pay for the champagne we asked to see the voucher we passed over to the restaurant manager on arrival, as we were still pretty sure the fizz was included. He was quite flustered and produced the voucher and sure enough there it was written champagne afternoon tea for 2. The manager didn't make much of his mistake and practically brushed over it with a mumbled apology. With afternoon tea being the trend at the moment, if this hotel wants to cash in on this then it needs to address these issues. My husband and I really enjoy our afternoon teas and we think we know what they are about, we often have afternoon tea at 5* hotels and though this hotel isn't in this bracket it still has a lot to learn. We hope they address these issues and make improvements and they could make a start with the restaurant manager's attitude and poor service.

Unfortunately we found the afternoon tea at the Flying Fish restaurant disappointing. In comparison to other local hotels/eateries offering afternoon tea (I have sampled a fair few!), it was not up there at all to the same standard, quality or quantity. Most places give you two scones per person, usually a fruit and plain scone, but there was just one each here and a small pot of jam and cream. The sandwiches were ok - egg mayo, tuna mayo and smoked salmon. Butter was spread so thick my husband thought we had cheese in them. The cakes on top were pretty dry and bland. However the biggest issue of all was the cream. Everyone knows a cream tea is served with proper clotted cream, but these came with a little pot of what looked and tasted like whipped cream. The waitress told us that it was clotted cream that the chef had whipped up to be able to pipe it into the pot. I'm not sure I quite believe that, as it didn't taste like clotted cream at all, it was lighter and thinner consistency like whipped cream and nowhere near as rich. It was not right on top of the scone anyway and it did not taste like a proper cream tea. In any event, I don't think Rodda's would be too pleased to hear that someone has been whipping (and ruining) their signature clotted cream! Complete sacrilege in my opinion. Overall we were disappointed with the afternoon tea. Afternoon tea should be a nice treat, slightly special and indulgent but sadly we didn't get this. On the plus side the staff were very welcoming and friendly, and the service was without fault.

We have just paid a visit to the Flying Fish Restaurant. Really enjoyable. Very friendly and accommodating staff, good food and lovely décor with excellent views out over the sea. Everywhere clean, tidy with a calm professional air about it. The food itself was very tasty and freshly cooked. We were a party of 10 which included a young child and he had a choice off the children's menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

We ate here on Sunday when the hotel was having a Sea Shanty lunch, a group of singers providing a suitably nautical theme. The lunch cost £21.50 for three courses with a choice of four dishes per course. My wife's gravadlax and my crab bisque were both delicious and we both followed with hake which was excellent. Nice desserts and good cheese board at, unusually, no extra charge. We had a great table overlooking the hotel garden and the bay with the sun streaming in. Good service despite the restaurant being quite busy.

Great place for a nice meal with friends or family. Lovely dining room, light, airy and spotless, with great view out over the hotel grounds and Gylly beach beyond.. Great welcome from friendly staff - the restaurant manager deserves especial praise indeed. Lovely food, beautifully presented. Not large portions, but plenty enough for the discerning diner - the quality is excellent. Only disappointment was the Eton Mess pudding, which took deconstruction to an unacceptable level - it looked like the component garnishes dotted around the plate were missing the slab of proper pudding in the middle. Can't imagine anybody would find that reasonable. Good wine list and special local ale. After dinner drinks in the very pleasant lounge adjacent. For the overall experience the price is very good.

Can't believe we hadn't visited before now...lovely bright dining room (also a large terrace to the side) with nice views of hotel's garden and the sea. We popped in for an impromptu and late lunch. The staff couldn't be more accommodating as they would have provided brunch (big breakfast) usually available until 14:00. We went for two kids meals (nice selection and price points at either 1, 2 or 3 courses). The portions were a good size and the food looked lovely. As it was late, it was nice surprise that the specials menu was still available £12.50 for two courses and £15 for three. The portions were not large (beef medallion, confit potato and shredded greens and husband had a yummy looking mackerel nicoise), however, they were perfect for lunch and beautifully presented. Pudding was equally delicious, delightful raspberry sorbet. The kids and both of us really enjoyed this meal and the venue. No kidding, it was less expensive than some of the usual pizza chains, nicer food, lovely environment and we will certainly revisit. There's a decent loyalty card, too, which is worth enquiring about if visiting.

The pool and spa area are in need of a makeover to bring it up to date, it looks very tired. We had our afternoon tea for two served in a pleasant reception room just off the main area. All was well until we went to leave. We were asked to pay for one of the tea's!It was a champagne afternoon tea for two, clearly stated on the gift card. Unfortunately the member of staff who attended to us leaving, did not understand such, and thought that we had had tea for 4! She argued with me despite trying to explain to her!The restaurant Manager, who fortunately served us, and who understood that tea for two meant exactly such, tried to calm troubled waters. But unfortunately the damage had been done, and what was to be an wafternoon's treat/gift, turned sour!Morale of the story:'always get your gift card clarified before you dine, as tea for two may only mean tea for one in certain countries'!

I ate dinner here on business last week. The service was impeccable, with very friendly and well trained staff attending to our every need. The restaurant overlooks the hotel's beautiful, lush, green gardens which slope down to the beach, so there is a wonderful sea view from your table as you eat. The food - I had the sea bass, followed by the lemon tart with raspberry sorbet - was delicious and the fish was perfectly cooked. However, the portions were very small. I am not someone who usually finds restaurant portions small, nor do I usually eat things like potatoes on the side of my fish, but here I gobbled up the accompanying potato as well as a bread roll which, again, I wouldn't usually have, and even considered buying some crisps from the bar immediately after my meal as I still felt very hungry and there seemed to be nowhere close to the hotel to find food in the evenings (I was staying overnight). The sliver of lemon tart (an inch long at the wider end) was very tasty but demolished in two bites. This is a shame as the food is very well prepared and presented, and the prices are also high.

Breakfast was really good and lots to chose from.It was a buffet style with everything you could wish for a good breakfast. The evening meals however, lacked choices on the menu and were way too fussy and there was a lack of food on your plate for the prices! I was very disappointed on the first evening. The service was a little slow and I felt that the waiters/waitresses were very false. It came over that it tried to be a real up-market place but unfortunately, I don't think it really works! If there had been more local places to eat out, I think I would have done so. Seriously please bring back the St Michaels we used to have. Since the nearby Falmouth hotel burnt down a few years back, this hotel has been complacent over it's previously second to none customer service, in all areas including it's gym and leisure facilities , bar and restaraunt food and service. We have watched food portions slowly decreasing in size but not price and service decreasing in speed. We used to be proud to take visiting friends and relatives St Michaels for a drink or a meal because of it's cleanliness. Now the bar area is dirty with food and tumble weed on the floor, under chairs, around the sofas and fireplace. It's also very off putting when the coffee is now very hit and miss. Please Mr Carpenter... pull your socks up. :O

We ordered lobster roll expecting some beautifully presented lobster curled round a tasty dressing. What turned up was a scant tablespoon of chopped overcooked lobster in a cold, cheap, tasteless white finger roll of bread that would have disgraced the bargain shelf of the cheapest supermarket. It was inedible. The side of hispi cabbage was well cooked, thankfully, or I would have left feeling very hungry. There are no loos. You have to use the dimly lit and droughty public loos in the adjacent council carpark. This is possibly the worst restaurant in St. Ives.

Such a warm welcome from everyone and enjoyed seeing the locals at the bar laughing and enjoying themselves, a real feel of Cornish community about the place. Extensive menu so you don’t have to just stick to fish and chips, fish pie, curried cod and prawns to name but a few other choices. If you can get a window seat above the old lifeboat launch ramp do it. Enjoyed our meal here and a must visit if you are in the area.
